Chapter 1

Ok, yes I understand that blowing up a school not the safest thing in the world, but you should really be happy that I did it. Well ok maybe not happy but let me just say I saved all of your mortal butts by doing it, but we'll get to that story later. First, let me tell you my side of the story.

My name is Mya, Mya Gethern to be exact, and I am 15. In a little over a month, I will be 16. You're probably thinking, 'oh yay she can get her license.' No, I'm not thinking that. Actually right now I'm trying to figure out how to keep my mother alive and live through the next few hours.

Yes, I know it shouldn't be my responsibility to take care of my sick mother, but what do you want me to do leave her with my abusive aunt and uncle? Yeah, I'd rather not do that to my mom because she's already in a fragile state. Yes, I know you're wondering where my dad is well you know as much as I do, so actually nothing. Also, I'd rather not call him dad because he abandoned us. Yeah, you heard me right my mom was like eight and a half months pregnant with me and he dipped, yet somehow she still loves him. I mean really how can you love someone who left you on your own to raise a child, and hasn't sent any money to help you and your child alive through some of the really bad times. According to my mom, he left to protect us, but it doesn't matter he's not important.

Anyways let's stop talking about him and get back to my crazy story. My day started off like normal. After I got ready to leave for school I went into my mom's room to talk to her. I took her in a plate of fruit and half a cup of coffee like every morning and asked her the normal questions about how she was feeling.

My mom has a disease that no one else has ever had. I mean when she went to the hospital the doctors didn't even know what to call it, and they said it was a miracle she's even alive.

Right before I left her room to go to school she said something that she's never said during our morning meetings, "Mya my perfect Mya, did I ever tell you how much you remind me of your father? No, I doubt I ever did because of the stubborn pride that you get from your father. I know that you think that he's abandoned us and I know that hurts you, but Mya he hasn't left us. I promise you that he left for well… mostly your safety, but he did that for you Mya. So don't let your pride be wounded by that." I was so shocked at what she was saying I didn't interrupt her, "Anyways, well your more noticeable features such as your blond hair and roundish cheeks you obviously got from me, but your sea green and ocean blue collided eyes and sly grin… well you received those from your father."

My throat was dry and my eyes stung with tears. How could she just compare me to him like it was nothing? "Thanks, mom but I should get to school now."

She looked at me with sad eyes and said, "I'm sorry Mya if I made you mad I truly didn't mean for that to happen, but you remind me so much of him I wish you could've met him. Hopefully, someday you will, but maybe not right now. Well, you better leave before you're late." As I headed for our front door of our small apartment on the west side of New York City she called out to me, "Remember Mya what belongs to the sea will always return to the sea!" With that, I headed out the door.
