The next morning when Jade woke up it took her a few seconds to realize where she was. At first she didn't recognize the room, but when she felt two familiar arms around her waist, holding her securely, she relaxed and smiled. Despite that yesterday was still heavy on her mind she was with Beck and that was worth being in Canada. While she could sleep through anything Beck was a light sleeper so she wasn't surprised when she felt him stir next to her, before she felt his lips on her neck for a soft good morning kiss.
"Did you sleep well during your first night here in Canada babe?" His voice was still rough from sleep and Jade smiled at his words. She turned around and gently ran a hand through his tousled hair.
"I even slept alright in Yerba so that I slept good here doesn't mean anything."
"You mean as long as you sleep in my arms." He grinned sweetly at her.
"Sap." Despite her words she met his lips for a proper good morning kiss.
After they pulled away Jade stood up and after searching in her suitcase for something to wear left for the bathroom. Beck admired his girlfriend in his shirt, she loved to sleep in it and he loved to see her in it, before the bathroom door closed and blocked his view of her. Smiling he lay his head back down on the pillow and looked out of the window. It felt good to be back in Canada and he had missed his family, especially his grandparents. He frowned slightly when he remembered how the rest of his family had reacted to Jade yesterday. Except for his grandparents no one had given Jade a chance and he could only hope that this would change. Last night he had called his father and had told him that Jade and him would spend the next few days here and not come over to his aunt's house like they had planned to. For now he didn't want that Jade had to see his other relatives after they had been so awful to her yesterday. Sure, his girlfriend could stand up for herself, but he still wanted to protect her from any cruel comments his family might throw her way.
When Jade came back into the room Beck was pulled out of his thoughts. She sat down in front of the huge mirror and began putting her make-up on when Beck frowned slightly.
"You know we're just spending the day here, so you don't have to put all that stuff on." When it was just the two of them spending the day in his RV she didn't put any make-up on and Beck preferred that, because he knew that then her walls were completely down. Over the years he had learned that her dark make-up was just a mask she could hide behind and he didn't want her to have to do that here.
"I know, but I still don't want to look awful."
At this point Beck knew arguing with her made no sense, so he gave her a small kiss before going to the bathroom to take a shower himself.
The next few days passed almost peacefully and Beck could slowly see a change in his girlfriend. His grandparents did everything they could to make Jade feel comfortable and it seemed that it was working. The mornings were spent in peaceful silence, because thankfully not only Jade wasn't a morning person but his grandma wasn't one as well. During the day Mary showed genuine interest in Jade's scripts and George and her shared the same sarcastic humor. On their fourth day in Canada he could even convince Jade that she should just leave her make-up be and she gave it a try. It wasn't until their fifth day that Beck saw the walls that Jade had slowly lowered, come back up with full force.
On Sunday morning they all drove over to Beck's aunt to have a huge family breakfast together like it was tradition on this day. It would be the first time since Jade's arrival in Canada that Jade would see the rest of his family again and Beck could tell that his girlfriend didn't look forward to it. Even making her coffee before they left didn't put Jade in a better mood and Beck could feel how tense she was during the whole drive to his aunt.
Mary watched the young couple on the backseat through the rearview mirror and could see what they were feeling. The last few days Jade had been more open, sure she still had the same sarcastic attitude and she was still not really talking much to them, but it had gotten better with each day. Slowly her and George could see the amazing girl Beck always described to them when he had talked about his girlfriend, but right now Jade looked and acted like the first time they had seen her. Mary couldn't blame Beck's girlfriend, the rest of the family hadn't been very welcoming to her after all. Sighing she looked over to her husband who seemed to share her thoughts, judging by the concerned look on his face.
The moment the four entered the house of Beck's aunt the atmosphere changed and Beck felt Jade tense even more under his arm. Despite that no one could see how Jade was really feeling, she was a good actress after all, Beck knew her long enough to see it. All eyes were on Jade once again and he saw his aunt openly frowning at his girlfriend. He wasn't about to let his aunt get away with this just like that.
"Is there something wrong?" He asked looking directly at his aunt, his voice sharp.
"I still can't believe the girlfriend you are dating for three years is this girl."
"Well they did break up for a reason, but sadly enough a few months ago they got back together." Mr. Oliver said, which only fueled Beck's anger even more.
Their break up was still a sore spot for Jade and despite that she really didn't want to fight with Beck's family she couldn't hold back anymore. These people were downright disrespectful to her and if there was an appropriate time to be mean it was now.
"You have no right to judge our relationship. If you want to be worried about something it should be about your wrinkles and awful clothes." She harshly told Beck's aunt, before facing Mr. Oliver. "As for you, rather than meddle in your son's relationship I would worry about your own marriage." With that she sat down the farthest away from those two as the small table allowed her to.
Beck sat down next to her without hesitation and lay an arm around her. Mary and George took their seats on either side of them and Mary could see Jade's hands clenching into fists on her lap. Beck seemed to notice that too because a moment later he took a hold of her hand before rubbing it softly until she relaxed enough for him to lace their fingers together. The couple looked at each other and Mary could almost see them having a silent conversation with their eyes. True to be told she didn't approve of her children acting like this towards Jade, especially because she had seen a different side of the girl the last few days. Bringing up the break up had clearly hurt Jade and Mary would make sure to ask Beck about that sometime later.
The breakfast was uncomfortable for Jade to say the least. After her outburst the rest of the family mostly ignored her and she was more than thankful for it. Beck didn't take part in any of the conversations even when his parents or aunt asked him something directly. Not that Jade wasn't glad her boyfriend was on her side, but she didn't want to break him and his family apart. She loved him and she wanted him to be happy and right now he wasn't content with how things were and it was partly her fault. Sighing she looked to her side and was surprised to see George looking reassuringly at her, but she quickly returned his smile with a small one of her own. Beck's grandparents were great people, but she couldn't ignore that the rest of his family basically hated her.
A few hours later they were finally back in the car and Jade was almost glad when George asked Beck if he could help him with fixing something after they got back home. Beck looked hesitant before locking eyes with her. She squeezed his hand lightly, signalizing him that it would be alright with her.
When they were back home Beck kissed her and then left to go to the garage with his grandpa. Mary told her that if she wanted to talk she would be in the living room watching her favorite show. Jade gave the older woman a thankful smile before going outside to sit on the porch. This was the first time since they drove to Beck's aunt that she felt like she could breath again.
Looking at the landscape she couldn't help but admit that Canada was beautiful. Don't get her wrong, she still preferred L.A. with shops at every corner and Karaoke Dokie and restaurants within reach, but here it was peaceful and once in a while she could appreciate that. When she was just with Beck and his grandparents she felt herself relax more with each day, but when they met up with the rest of his family she was mostly tense and even more defensive. Especially his aunt and her family never made a secret out of it that they didn't like her and despite that she would normally not care, this was Beck's family. She knew how much his family meant to him and seeing that they so openly hated her worried her.
She must have been so lost in her thoughts that she didn't realized how late it was already until she saw the sun sink slowly. When she stood up and was about to turn around and go inside she felt two familiar arms wrap around her from behind and a second later she felt soft lips on her neck.
"I missed you." Beck's smooth voice greeted her.
"You were only gone for a few hours." She rolled her eyes, but leaned against him with a small smile.
"It was still a long time to be away from you and not being able to kiss you." He tightened his arms around her and lay his head on her shoulder. "You looked deep in thoughts."
Beck knew it wasn't easy for Jade to let him in on her thoughts, especially when she considered the emotions, that were connected to her thoughts, vulnerable. Sometimes it took him hours before she told him what the problem was when it were vulnerable things, but after he heard her sigh he knew she was about to tell him what was bothering her.
"Your grandparents are great." There was no sarcastic undertone in her voice, but Beck knew there was more to it. "But the rest of your family hates me."
"They just don't know you." He softly turned her around in his arms so that he could look into her eyes. The sadness he saw in her deep blue eyes made his heart squeeze painfully.
"They don't want to get to know me, they already have an opinion about me and they won't change it. I know how much your family means to you Beck."
What she really wanted to say was very subtle, but Beck knew immediately what she was worried about. After their long break up he had realized that he had cared too much about what other people thought about their relationship. People judged them and their relationship without really knowing them and he had let this bother him. Jade was obviously still worried that he would once again care too much about other people's opinions and would break up with her again because of that. Considering that it was his family that thought bad of her, only made it worse for her. Looking at the beautiful girl in his arms Beck was surer than ever that he wouldn't let her go again, no matter what his relatives thought of her. Now he just needed for her to see that.
"It's true that I love my family and what they think matters." At that he felt Jade turn away from him and she tried to pull out of his embrace, but he didn't let her and instead softly turned her head so they were locking eyes again. "But I love you and what they say doesn't change that. I know what an amazing girl you're and if they can't see that they're missing out."
"I love you."
It was rare that she said it, not because she didn't meant it, but because speaking about vulnerable emotions wasn't easy for her, but she had to tell him now. After everything he just said, after standing up for her and still believing in them she wanted him to hear it.
At her words Beck's eyes light up and he smiled lovingly at her, before he returned those three meaningful words and kissed her passionately.
Little did the couple know that they weren't as alone as they thought they were. Mary had just wanted to tell them that dinner was ready when she had heard their conversation. She really didn't want to eavesdrop, but when Jade opened up so much to Beck she couldn't help but listen. During the time Jade was already here Mary had hardly seen the girl so vulnerable and it warmed her heart to see her grandson having such a special person in his life. From the moment she had met Jade and had seen her and Beck together she knew that they shared something that was rare these days, true love. Mary hoped that when Jade spend more time here she would be just as open to her and George as she was with Beck, because her grandson was right, Jade was more than what meets the eye and Mary wanted to really know the girl that made her grandson so happy. When Mary saw the couple move, she quickly went back inside, she had a feeling that Jade wouldn't appreciated it, if she knew that she had seen the exchange between her and Beck.
