Three days later was Mary's chance to make Jade see that it was alright to open up to her just like she did with Beck. George had asked Beck to go on a small fishing trip with him and Beck was reluctant at first to leave Jade for so long, but after she lightly slapped him on the arm and told him with a sarcastic eye-roll she could take care of herself, he agreed.
After Jade kissed Beck goodbye she sat outside on the porch working on her new script. This had become her favorite spot in the whole house and she often sat here with Beck or alone. At home she hardly had time to sit down in peace and just let her thoughts flow, so she was glad that now she had time to work on her script. With the craziness of Hollywood Arts and their friends she was always occupied and now she finally could work on an idea she had a while ago. Two hours passed and she was still working on the script without a break. When she got an idea she could sit for hours in her own world and just write until she was content with the results. She almost flinched when someone opened the french doors and stepped outside.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to disturb you, but I thought you could use a cup of coffee." Mary spoke up.
"I would never say no to coffee, it's one of the few things I love." Jade smirked, taking the cup.
"So I have heard. Beck told me that you even make videos about all the things you hate."
"Yeah and when I'm back home I might add a few things."
Her words didn't offend Mary in the slightest, because after the few days she had already spent with Jade she knew not to take her comments too seriously.
"What are you working on?" Mary asked, sitting down on the chair next to Jade. She saw Beck's girlfriend hesitant slightly before she told her about her script. Mary knew that writers were quite picky when it came to telling someone about their ideas before they finished their work, so she saw it as a huge sign of trust that Jade told her the basic lines of her script. Hoping that she wasn't pushing her too far Mary spoke up again. "Mind if I sit here with you while you're writing?"
Jade looked surprised at Mary. She didn't feel like the older woman would disturb her and she seemed genuinely interested in her work. Somehow Mary was on her way to become one of the few people Jade actually liked and so she nodded.
"But no talking, I still need to write a few more pages until I'm done."
Mary only nodded and leaned back into her chair, looking at the landscape.
At first Jade was skeptical if the old woman would really let her work in peace, but when she realized that she really just sat there she began writing again. Beck and her often sat together in silence when they were both working on scripts and it always helped them to not feel lonely while doing that. Now that Mary sat here with her Jade realized that before the older woman came outside she had felt a little bit lonely, especially with Beck gone for the whole day with his grandpa. Not being alone and still working on her script was all she could ask for and slowly she began to see that maybe she could have a real connection to Beck's grandparents.
Meanwhile Beck wasn't aware that his girlfriend and grandma were on the best way to get along. At first he had been reluctant to leave Jade to go on a fishing trip with his grandpa, but now that he was here he enjoyed it. Just a men's day out was great and he had always liked fishing here.
"So Jade is really something else, isn't she?" George broke the comfortable silence between them.
"What do you mean?" Beck's tone was sharp. After almost all of his relatives were so awful to her, he was even more protective of her. So far he had thought that his grandpa liked Jade, but was he wrong after all?
"No need to get so defensive." George chuckled. "All I'm saying is that she is quite different in a good way. She is not afraid to say her opinion."
"Well that's one of the reasons I love her. She is her own person and knows what she wants in life. When I first met her she refused to even talk to me and after we became friends and I started asking her out she rejected me all the time. Falling in love with her was the best thing that ever happen to me. I don't know if that makes sense, but she completes me."
"You really love her." It was more a statement than a question, but Beck answered none the less.
"Yes." There was no hesitation in his voice and George smiled.
"What you two have it very rare these days. When I saw you with her for the first time I immediately saw that this between you two is special. You have a real connection, something that your grandma and I have as well. I'm old, but I can still see that you and Jade are meant to be."
His grandpa's words touched Beck's heart. It felt good to hear that his grandpa could see what Jade really meant to him and that what they were sharing was special. Before that awful break up everyone had constantly told him that him and Jade were too different to work out and that they wouldn't last. All that had slowly gotten to him and he had not opened that door, but with time passing he had realized that he couldn't live without her and so he had asked her to take him back. Hearing his grandpa's words now meant so much to him. His grandpa and him had always a good relationship and when he had problems he called him sometimes. People always said that they were similar in a way, and seeing that they both liked poetic words and were hopeless romantics at heart, they seemed to be right. If Jade was here she would say that he had his sappiness from his grandpa. At the thought of his girlfriend Beck smiled and turned to George.
"That really means a lot to me and I know that to Jade it would as well."
The rest of the fishing trip was mostly spent in comfortable silence, after all men don't need to talk all the time.
When Beck came back home he was surprised to find his grandma and Jade sitting on the porch together. Jade was writing on her script while his grandma looked on the landscape. It was a picture of harmony and he felt his heart warm, maybe he wasn't the only one who had strengthened a relationship today. Slowly to not disturb Jade too much and not scare his grandma he stepped out on the porch. However Jade and him were so in tune with each other that she immediately felt his presents and turned around.
"How was your boring fishing trip?" Jade smirked at him.
"Not boring at all. How was your boring script writing?"
"Right back at you, it wasn't boring. Now give me a proper greeting." She told him and smiling he leaned down and gave her a kiss. It wasn't until she lay a hand on his cheek and pulled him closer that Beck remembered that his grandma was still sitting a few feet away, so he pulled away.
"Hello grandma, I hope you had a good day as well." Beck said a little embarrassed.
"Of course. Now I'll leave you two alone and prepared dinner." The old woman smiled at Jade and she returned it with a small smile of her own, before Mary went inside.
Beck had watched the small exchange between Mary and his girlfriend with surprise and he couldn't help but asked about it after he sat down in the chair next to Jade.
"What happened while I was gone? Don't tell me my grandma is a fan of The Scissoring and you like her because of that."
Jade smirked amused before setting her script aside and standing up, only to sit down on Beck's lap.
"Not that I know of, but that's a good idea. I'll ask her later if she knows The Scissoring. You know I always have a DVD of that movie with me so maybe I can show it to her."
"Please don't." Beck said, but he knew that she wasn't serious or at least he hoped. Laying his arms around her waist and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead he smiled. "So you're starting to like my grandparents?"
"Let's just say that maybe you aren't the only Canadian anymore that I can tolerate."
Knowing Jade that was a huge compliment for his grandparents and Beck smiled before he leaned down to kiss her, this time more passionate.
The next day Beck was in for a surprise, not only did it seem like Jade stood up before him, but when he found her she was helping his grandma in the kitchen and setting up the table with her. Maybe it shouldn't surprise him all that much, because when he had dinner with Jade, her mom and her brother, Jade always helped her mom in the kitchen. What not many people knew was, that after the divorce Jade and her mom had gotten even closer and they had a good relationship. Another thing only Cat and him knew was that Jade was a great big sister for her brother if she wanted to be. There was only a two year gape between the siblings and her brother was just as independent as she was, but Beck had seen her be protective of him on a few occasions. Seeing his grandma and Jade now, Beck felt like Jade slowly began trusting his grandparents and that made him more than happy.
"Morning babe. It seems like I don't have to worry about our future kids starving." He greeted her smiling.
"Oh please as if I would ever cook. Our future children better hope you earn enough money to hire a cook." She smirked at him.
Mary looked at them with an amused smile. Despite that the young couple was now bickering she was aware that none of them had denied that they wanted a future with each other. When she looked at them it gave her hope that even nowadays, where so many things had changed, there still could be something like true love.
"They're very similar to us, aren't they?" Her husband's voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
"Yes, I just hope they won't let what anyone thinks about them get in their way, it's very rare to find your soulmate."
When everyone settled down Mary spoke up.
"So what have you two planned for today?"
"Nothing so far, why?" Beck asked.
"Why don't you take Jade to that nice cafe where they sell that special Canadian coffee." George suggested and immediately saw Jade's eyes light up.
"You didn't tell me they have special coffee here?" She looked at her boyfriend accusingly.
"Well, you told me that you don't like trying anything Canadian."
"You know how much I love coffee, so you're taking me there as soon as we finish breakfast."
Beck only smiled at her and nodded. A little after they had finished breakfast Beck borrowed his grandpa's car and they drove to the small cafe Mary had mentioned. Not many people were there, seeing that it was still early and they found a table right by the window. When the waiter brought them their coffees Jade took a sip cautiously.
"And what do you say?"
"Maybe the coffee in Canada isn't so bad after all."
"You like it." Beck grinned at her.
"I didn't say that. I just said it isn't as awful as it could have been." Despite her words Beck saw that she enjoyed her coffee immensely and it made him smile. When he looked at her, sitting here with him, smiling and just being relaxed he felt his heart beat faster. How had he gotten so lucky to call Jade West his girlfriend?
"I love you." He told her softly and lay his hand over hers on the table.
"Where is this coming from?" Jade looked up from her coffee and he could see a smile tugging at her lips.
"I just thought I would tell you again. I really appreciate it that you came here with me. It means a lot to me." At his words he saw her eyes soften and she squeeze his hand a little, lacing their fingers together.
"I knew it would and that's why I came with you. Most of your family might not like me, but I'm glad I got to meet your grandparents. They are amazing."
"They really are and I feel like they can see that this between us is special." Beck mused out loud and saw Jade nod.
That his grandparent were able to see how much they loved each other meant a lot to him. He had always been close to them and that they saw their special connection made him happy.
Half an hour later they left the small cafe, Beck's arm around Jade's waist.
"I'm really glad you came with me to Canada." He smiled down at her when they stood in front of the car.
"Me too. It was exactly what we needed." Jade mirrored his expression, before he leaned down and kiss her lovingly.
