Chapter 2:

Mom isn't Dead

(Warning, contains spoilers for Team Salvato's "Doki Doki Literature Club.)

(Also warning: Graphic descriptions of um… bad stuff. Bad bad stuff.)

"Elvira, sweetie. Bring the spellbook here please."

She was gone.

There's nothing else to say… her mother was dead. Swept away on the whims of fate. The last person who loved her, protected her, cared for her… dead. And now… she was alone. No family, no friends, no one. Elvira had nothing.

It happened so fast, she wasn't even sure what happened. One moment they were doing what they always did: performing rituals and summoning demons. It was a regular thing for them. They've done it constantly ever since Elvira entered her teens. She was quite good at it too. Her mother always made sure to be sure she was performing them properly, and protecting her in case anything went wrong. This time though, things got too out of hand.

The only ones she had left now were her school friends, her club mates. Sayori, Yuri, Natsuki, and Monika. They formed a club, a literature club to be specific. They did the normal things you'd expect them to do. Read, write poems, that sorta thing. Elvria was the youngest of the group being only 16, with the rest of the group at 18. They were her best friends though, so much so she saw them as the sisters she never had.

Little did she know, unfortunately she was going to lose them too.

It started with Sayori. Usually she would be a bright shining ball of infectious positivity, but suddenly… she just... changed. Instead of the happy girl Elvira knew, Sayori became sad and depressed. No genuine joy to be found. Elvira knew about Sayori 's depression for a while, as to someone like her the signs were obvious, but it was clear it had gotten worse than before. After that, Sayori just disappeared completely. Even stranger, no one seemed to remember her but Elvira. Anytime she mentioned her name, the others just asked who she was talking about. Somehow even stranger-er, Monika was President of the Literature Club. This was fine on it's own as they did decide that if Sayori was absent, Monika would take over as president as long as she was out. The strange part was, it was as if Monika had ALWAYS been president and Sayori never existed.

Not too long afterwards Monika introduced them to a brand new member, MC. Elvira always found it weird that that was his name, but she always chalked it up to it being short for something, like AJ.

Moving on, next was Yuri. Yuri was by far the closest to Elvira compared to the other club members. They had similar personalities, interests. If it wasn't for their differentiating fashion sense and physical features, you'd think they were related. In fact, when her mom died she went to Yuri and decided to stay with her. Obviously it would be expected that Elvira would quickly see the changes in Yuri's personality, and that was exactly the case. Elvira knew about Yuri's er… "hobby" and actively tried to help her with it as well as other things the purplette had to deal with. You could say that Elvira helped to keep Yuri's unstable personality under control. Heck, wherever Yuri was, Elvria was never far behind… except the bathroom and other places like that of course.

Of course, that would change as Yuri eventually became more and more unstable and unhinged as time went by. Her self-cutting became more frequent, and she became more condescending and perverted as well. She was also starting to develop an unhealthy obsession with MC. Elvira tried to help Yuri out the best she could, but unfortunately Yuri was getting too far gone. Still, she persisted.

Natsuki's relation to Elvira doesn't have anything much to go over as they never really interacted. They were on good terms, and got along well, but other than that… really nothing else. Elvria didn't even know much about Natsuki either, almost as little as she knew about Monika. Speaking of her, Elvria found her strange. Monika at first was just what you'd expect. Smart, kind, caring. As time went on, however, she became more… manipulative…

One day before school, Elvira was back at her old home and she found a mysterious device in her mother's room. She'd never seen anything like it before. What was her mom doing with it? Surely it must've been important, so she took it with her.

She arrived at school around the same as Natsuki and they walked to the club room. Elvira asked Natsuki if she knew where Yuri was as she didn't come home last night. Of course, Natski said she hadn't, but she was probably in the club room already. She was right, but probably in the worst way possible.

The two reached the club room and we're met with the horrific sight of MC standing over Yuri who was on the ground.

Dead.

She laid lifeless on the ground propped against a desk, her abdomen covered in her own blood along with the floor around her. Her beautiful violet eyes, now diluted and colored gray. Her gaze fixed on MC, who stared scared from seeing Yuri laying on the ground. One look at Yuri's hand bloodied with a knife next to it, it was clear that she had done this...

To herself.

Natsuki's immediate reaction was an ear splitting scream, followed by her immediately throwing up and running out of the club room. Elvira could do nothing but stare at her bestest friend and her fellow club member in disbelief. A 3rd person dear to her in her life, gone. First her mother, then Sayori (wherever she was), and now her bestest friend. She could practically call Yuri her sister. She wanted to kneel down, hug Yuri, and cry. She couldn't bring herself to do so, so she stood, in silence.

That's when Monika arrived…

"I'm here! Elvira. MC. Did something happen?" She said suspiciously unaware of Yuri's corpse.

"Natsuki just ran past me…"

"Oh. . . . . . . Oh. . . . . ." finally, she seemed to be aware of the current dilemma.

". . . Ahahahaha!" Wat.

"That's a shame. Wait, MC, were you here all weekend? Oh jeez sorry-"

Elvira couldn't believe her ears. Didn't Monika care? Why is she so calm? Why is he not freaking out over the fact that her friend, her club mate, her fellow student was lying on the ground? DEAD?!

"-Just gimme a sec"

"I'm almost do- oh, Elvira. I completely forgot you were here. Don't worry, I'll get to you in a second…"

At this point it came to her. Monika was behind it all. Sayori's disappearance, Yuri's "suicide," both of their strange behaviors. Everything. Was. Her.

Elvira ran out of the room. She had to get away, she had to get help. Monika was a psycho. Whatever she's doing, it isn't good. In her panic she tripped and fell, dropping the strange device.

*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*

"W-what the f-"

*FWOOSH*

A portal? The device made… a portal? WHAT? Why does her mom have the technology to make PORTALS? For how long? Why? Where?

Too many damn questions...

Focus on one thing right now… Monika. She'll probably come after her any moment now. So she needed to get AWAY from her. Portals go from place to place right? Surely this'll take her elsewhere. Still that was the question. Where? She can't just jump into a random portal and expect good things. Then again, did she really have a choice?

"Frig it…" Elvira said as she reached towards the swirling hole. Suddenly, a hand reached out and grabbed her. She tried to scream for help, but before she could she was already through the portal.

"Elvira was your name?"

"Don't be scared… I'm here to help."

"Anna told me everything..."
