WARNING - MENTIONS OF SELF HARM AND SUICIDE
Ever since Brax had dropped Kyle off at the clinic, he'd felt really guilty. He was spending a majority of his time with Emilia when he wasn't going to check on Angelo's and he was trying to keep his mind off it. He keeps remembering how afraid and confused Kyle looked when it came to him leaving. He just wanted to go and make things right, for Kyle to know he wasn't alone.
"Brax, you are not driving out there!" Ricky moans, holding the keys behind her, just as Heath walks in.
"Rick, give me the keys." Brax firmly says.
"No." She firmly says.
"What's going on?" Heath asks.
"Brax wants to go and see Kyle, even though he's not allowed until Pete calls and says it's okay." Ricky says.
"He needs to know I haven't abandoned him there!" Brax says. "You didn't see his face when I left, I know what's best for him, not some strangers who don't even know him."
"If you go out there and bring him home, he'll try and kill himself again. Then he'll just be put on some psych ward that will drug him up until he's better. That was the best place for him, we all agreed to it." Heath says.
"Fine, then I'll just go and see him, he doesn't even have to know I'm there." Brax says.
"No!" Ricky says. "You said you were going to spend some special daddy-daughter time with Emilia whilst I go into Yabbie Creek with Bianca, and I'm not changing my plans because you want to see Kyle."
"You know how selfish that sounds?" Brax huffs. "Kyle's my brother, am I not allowed to care about him now?"
"I never meant it like that and you know it. Kyle is getting the help he needs, and he's not allowed visitors in case it interferes with that and delays his recovery. If you go out there, and he sees your car, he's going to think you've abandoned him all over again, and what good is that going to do?" Ricky glares, walking into the flat to grabs her keys before going to meet Bianca.
"Ricky's right, we have to judge that these people know what they're doing." Heath says. "I don't like the fact he isn't allowed visitors either, but they know best."
"You wouldn't have gone to see him either way." Brax retorts. "You've been avoiding him ever since he threatened to put you in prison, even though we knew he was just upset about Lillie and was having a go at everyone. So don't you dare tell me you don't like it." He hisses, walking into the flat to get Emilia before going for a walk to clear his head.
Heath's POV
Walking up the pathway and through the door, I get a few odd glances, and I can see why. A Braxton doesn't walk into a police station of his own accord, except none of us have before, but I am now. I am not backing down whatever they say, this needs to be done.
"Heath, what can I do for you?" Kat asks, frowning slightly as I walk up to the front desk.
"I want Lillie's case file." I say, full of determination as McCarthy walks over to us.
"The case has been closed. We can't just give information like that out." Kat says.
"My brother needs closure in what happened to his daughter. He's tried to kill himself because of it, so I am not leaving here until I get it." I firmly say.
"Okay, come through and we can talk about it." McCarthy says, nodding to Kat as they lead me into an interview room, shutting the door behind me before we all sit down. "May I ask what you would need the case file for?"
"I'm going to try looking for Lillie again." I lightly shrug, and I can see them look slightly bemused.
"We've already searched every surrounding in the area, and within a 50km range and nothing was found. I understand you want closure for Kyle but we've done all we can." Kat says.
"When Kyle gets out of the clinic, seeing Emilia could trigger something and then he'll be right back to square one. If I can use Lillie's case file, and work out if something's missing, then I could get him the closure he needs to be able to move past this." I say, not sure if it was working or not. "How would you feel if that was your daughter, and you never knew what happened to her? Whether she had been dumped somewhere, murdered, brought up thinking the kidnappers are her parents. Kyle has to everyday, pushed him to the point where he thought self harming and suicide were his last options." I say, frowning as they glance at each other.
"Heath, could you wait outside whilst I have a conversation with Kat. And send Emerson in for me." McCarthy says.
"Do I look like your slave?" I huff.
"We are doing you a favour by giving you the time of day to listen to you." McCarthy says.
"Alright." I shake my head as I stand up, walking out and seeing the officer I needed near the front desk. "Oi Emerson, McCarthy wants you in there." I order, pointing to the interview room before heading over to the waiting room.
I sit down and wonder what they could be talking about. I know they're not going to consider reopening the case, but if I can get them to give me the case file, me and the boys could do our own search. One of the boys is now a private investigator, he'd definitely help if I offered him something good, maybe even more clientele, which I know he'd be happy to get.
I should probably have told Brax what I was planning on doing before coming down here, but surely he can't be mad? I'm trying to do something good, so Kyle can see I'm not conspiring against him. But then again, he only thought that about us trying to get him put on a psych ward, and now he's in a clinic so can't think that any more.
"Heath, you can come back in now." Kat says from the doorway, so I head over and take the seat I was previously sat in.
"So what was your secret chat about?" I ask, a little too sarcastically.
"We've come to a decision that we will give you the case file, but on one condition." McCarthy says.
"Which is?" I ask.
"Emerson and I will be helping with the case when we have time and when off duty to ensure you don't go about getting closure illegally." Kat says. "We can use our database here and any other resources that may be needed during that time, and you will need to consult us about all plans you make."
"I'm afraid I won't be able to give you any more man power as the case was closed." McCarthy says.
"Don't worry about man power, I can get the boys to help." I say, seeing their faces. "They're not all hot heads." I roll my eyes. "I'm doing this for Kyle, and I know exactly what boys I can get to help."
"This needs to be done the right way or we can all get into trouble. I better not find out you've done anything illegal." McCarthy firmly says.
"I won't!" I sigh, seriously what's wrong with them? I'm doing this for Kyle, not for them to lose their jobs.
"What is your plan once we give you the case file?" Kat asks.
"I was going to see which areas were checked thoroughly and which weren't. I know that you had data from each town to say how many babies under a certain age were living there, so I'll compare it to now, and recheck the places which have changed. If you give permission, we could ask the people who now have a baby living in that town if they would let us check the kid." I explain.
"And what happens if a mother refuses to let us do a DNA test for a closed case?" Emerson asks.
"We don't need a DNA test to start with. Lillie was born with a unique birthmark on her shoulder, that doctors said was quite rare in shape and colour. They had to test it to make sure it wasn't anything serious, which is wasn't but said it wasn't likely to ever fade like some rare birthmarks do." I reply.
"Oh yes, I think we have a photo of it in the file." Kat says, now remembering it. "So we could check to see if the baby has a birthmark, then if it does, we take a DNA test."
"Exactly." I nod, glad they were taking this seriously now.
