A Spider's Friendship
Sage came in the house with the mail in his hand, sorting it out for his father, who was in the kitchen making dinner. The fire elemental turned to his son and smiled at him. "Anything good in the mail, son?" He asked.
"Let's see," the boy said, looking through it. "The light bill. The cable bill. Some junk mail. And a letter." He paused and looked at the return address. "Dad, who's Muffet?"
Grillby's head jerked up in surprise before his face took on a red tint and he sighed. "Well, you were bound to find out sooner or later," he said, sounding a bit embarrassed.
"Dad?" Sage asked, wondering what was going on. "Is it a bad thing?"
"No, son," the fire elemental said soothingly before going up to him. "Before I adopted you, I was dating Muffet, a spider lady monster."
The boy blinked. "A spider lady?" He asked. "Does she own a bakery?"
"Yes, she does," Grillby said with a smile. "You might have passed it a few times when going to school."
The young man nodded. "Yeah," he said before holding up the letter. "So you really like her?"
Grillby blushed again. "Yes, I do," he said. "But...after I adopted you, I spoke with her and told her that I wanted to focus on being a father to you, especially after everything you had gone through." He paused. "I thought she'd be upset, but she surprised me. She actually encouraged me to be there for you and said she'd wait for me."
Sage blinked. "Okay," he said, a bit surprised himself that his father's girlfriend had understood. "So...when do I get to meet her?"
The fire elemental blinked. "Well...if she sent a letter, I'm guessing she wants to meet you," he said, still looking a bit embarrassed.
The young man looked at his father. "Dad, I'm not upset, you know," he said. "I'm just curious. I didn't think you were dating someone."
Grillby looked at him and smiled gently. "I never told you and I decided that being a father to you was a bit more important than dating at the time," he said. "And I don't regret that."
"Yeah, but if you really like her, then you should go out with her still," the boy said.
The fire elemental bit his lip. "Sage...as wonderful as that sounds...I refuse to not be there for you," he said. "I don't want you to feel like you don't matter to me anymore."
Sage chuckled. "Dad, you are always there for me," he said. "And I know I matter to you. But you matter to me too." He hugged him. "And I'm old enough to be by myself for a bit at night if you went on a date. I wouldn't mind."
Grillby chuckled before picking up the letter and smiling. "Let's see what she has to say," he said, opening it and reading it aloud.
Dear Grillby,
I hope you and Sage are well. I've heard a lot about him from our dear niece about how he saved her and how he's a good kid. Sans even told me that you adopted him as your son. I knew you would be a good father as you have a soft spot for kids. :)
Anyway, I was wondering if you and Sage would like to join me for dinner some night. I would love to meet the brave young man who saved our niece and who helped run your restaurant when you were sick. Give me a call when you can, my love. I miss you, but still understand and will wait patiently, no matter how long it takes.
Love,
Muffet
Sage looked a bit bashful at the parts about him saving Frisk and helping keep the restaurant going. "She sounds nice," he said.
"She is," Grillby said, looking lost in thought. "How about we join her tomorrow night?"
"Sounds good to me."
Grillby called Muffet, who was ecstatic about the idea. "I'll see you tomorrow and I've got a great big kiss for you, handsome," she said lovingly.
He chuckled. "And I've got one for you," he said. "We'll see you tomorrow, Muffet."
The next evening, Sage got dressed in a clean shirt and his best blue jeans and shoes while Grillby put on a tuxedo and they headed out to one of Mettaton's very fancy restaurants. Muffet was waiting for them there when they arrived and she smiled, looking stunning in her red gown trimmed with lace.
"Grillby!" She said, running up to him and hugging him.
"Muffet, it's good to see you," he said, hugging her back.
She giggled and gave him a great big kiss, which he returned before gently breaking away and turning to find Sage smiling at them. "Muffet, I'd like for you to meet my son, Sage," he said. "Sage, this is Muffet."
The young man bowed his head in respect. "It's nice to meet you, Miss Muffet," he said politely.
She grinned. "My, what a gentleman," she said, impressed. "I've heard much about you, Sage, and I'm happy to finally put a face to a name."
He blushed a little. "I was just doing what was right, Ma'am," he said.
She giggled. "Please, call me Muffet, dearie," she said. "Why don't we go inside?"
They went in and were soon seated at a booth with a round table before Muffet pulled something out of her bag. "Sage, I hope you don't mind, but I made this for you after hearing about how you saved Frisk," she said, handing him a medium-sized flat box.
"Oh, thank you," he said in surprise.
She smiled. "You can open it," she said as she took Grillby's hand. He gently squeezed her hand back, knowing what the gift was as she had told him.
Sage opened the box and his eyes widened at seeing a dreamcatcher inside. He lifted it up and it shown in the light, the clear strands seeming to glow purple as the light caught them. "This is a special dreamcatcher, Sage," Muffet said. "The threads are made from my magic, which is why they are glowing purple. If you put this dreamcatcher over your bed, it will not only stop any nightmares, but also protect you, no matter where you are," she said.
The boy realized just how much thought had gone into the gift and he smiled. "Thank you, Muffet," he said. "I'm going to hang it over my bed tonight when I get home."
The spider lady was relieved he liked the gift and felt Grillby squeeze her hand again. "I told you that he'd love it," he said.
"Yes, but...I just wanted to make a good first impression with him, Handsome. After all, he is your son," she said.
Sage grinned. "Muffet, when Dad told me about you, I could see how much he liked you," he said. "And...I kind of feel bad that you guys haven't been on a date since Dad adopted me."
"Oh, Sage, you shouldn't feel bad about that," she said, taking his hand gently. "Your father and I decided that it was best for you that we hold off on dating as you got settled in."
"Yeah, but...you guys deserve to be happy too," he said before looking at them. "I'm okay with you guys dating."
"Sage...are you sure?" Grillby asked. "Because...well...,"
Muffet smiled. "What your father is trying to say is that...we've been thinking about...becoming a couple," she said gently. "But...we're willing to hold on that for you."
He blinked. "You mean...get married?" He asked.
"Yes, but not yet," she said. "I...I've heard about some of the horrors you've been through, hence the dreamcatcher and...we felt that if we suddenly dropped that news on you, well...it would make you uncomfortable, and we didn't want that."
Sage could see that just like his dad, Muffet was patient and apparently loved his father very much. He smiled. "How about...we see how it goes?" He suggested. "And you and I start off as friends, Muffet?"
She smiled at that. "I'd like that, Sage," she said. "Your father was right. You are a very thoughtful young man. I'd certainly be proud to have you as my son if that's what the future holds for us."
He was surprised that she'd be willing to be his mom and smiled. "Well, I've learned to let fate do its work," he said. "And I'm fated to be friends with a spider that my dad has a soft spot for."
Grillby chuckled before sliding closer to his son and tickling his sides briefly, making the boy laugh and squirm before his father let him up. Muffet smiled and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, making him look at her.
"Thank you for understanding, Sage," she said. "I hope I'm not being too pushy."
He shook his head. "No, you're good," he said, smiling. "And thank you for understanding."
She smiled at him and Grillby smiled too, glad to have not only a wonderful son, but a wonderful girlfriend in his life too.
And he hoped that someday soon, they would all become a family, but he was willing to wait until the time was right.
Okay, I had a lot of fun with this one. :)
Happy Birthday, Steelcode! :) Hope it's a blast! :)
