Written for Hogwarts - Assignment #11 - Muggle History: Christmas - Task #1 - Write about the start of a tradition.
Harry didn't have any Christmas traditions. The Dursleys would always try to exclude him from whatever they did, and his gifts were cheap. So when Ginny asked what traditions he had for Christmas, he looked at her in confusion.
"I don't have any traditions," he shrugged to her horror, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Well, let's start one!"
Thus began the hunt for a Christmas tradition. They started out small like picking a Christmas but Harry looked confused so Ginny face palmed and moved on. Next, they tried to make cards for everyone, but let's just say that art wasn't Harry's strong suit and it quickly ended in disaster.
As the days passed, they tried many more, which ended in disaster. Baking turned out just as bad as art and they quickly forgot about advent as Christmas grew nearer.
It was a week before Christmas that they got a package from Hagrid. Inside was a little wooden frame with a picture of his parents, one Harry had never seen before. They were celebrating Christmas, and they were decorating the tree, baby Harry giggling in the background as his parents argued back and forth.
Harry stared at it. At the only Christmas he would ever get with them. And he thought of what life would've been like and what Christmas' would be like a part of him broke at that.
Ginny held him through that moment. She wrapped his arms around him and he was thankful for her support. Together, they mourned for the Christmas' that were never celebrated.
Next Christmas, Harry smiled at the ornaments hanging on the tree. Next to his parents' ornament hung another one just like with a picture of the Weasley's and as the years passed, the tree would be filled with more pictures even after he died. He had found his Christmas tradition.
