Chapter 6 The Voice in the Night
It's been a couple days since Korra and Sean saw first hand what Amon could do and since then the story began to spread and every bender good and bad were terrified beyond words. Even Korra herself was terrified to have her bending taken away though she would not admit it.
Currently Korra was asleep on Air temple island.
The only source of light was the moon.
Suddenly however she heard footsteps running around making her shoot up before an Equalist jumped into her room through the window before two others broker her door down.
Quick to spring into action she fire bent them away only for them to use their numbers to their advantage before Chi-Blocking her making her eyes widen as she fell to her knees.
When she looked up she gasped seeing Amon approaching her.
"After I take your bending away, you will be nothing." Amon said reaching for her making her eyes widen in horror before a blade went through Amon's head before Sean tore it off before killing the others with ease.
"Sean." Korra said weakly before Sean picked her up.
"I told you I would always protect you." Sean said making her smile before reaching up to kiss him.
Only for her to open her eyes seeing it was all a dream before seeing Sean in the bed across from her.
She could only smile knowing she was safe as long as he was with her before she fell back asleep.
Next morning
Tenzin was in a council meeting regarding Amon.
"There is a madman running around our beloved city, threatening to tear it apart. We need to create a task force whose sole mission it find Amon and bring him to justice." Tarrlok said.
"Absolutely not. A move that aggressive would only further divide benders and Non-Benders." Tenzin said.
"Tarrlok, I'm inclined to agree with your proposal. But who would even head up such a task force?" A council woman asked.
"It would be my honor and privilege to accept such a duty." Tarrlok said.
"This is just another one of your ploys to gain more power isn't it?" Tenzin accused.
"All I'm trying to do is help. Think back. 42 Years ago, Republic city was threatened by another Dangerous man...Yakone. Your father wasn't afraid to face him head on." Tarrlok said.
"This is a completely different situation. And how dare you compare yourself to Avatar Aang!" Tenzin said angered.
"Amon is not going to stop with the Bending Triads. Eventually he will come for all us benders...Our friends...Our families...Vote for this Task force and I will stop Amon before it's too late. Or there is another option we could use." Tarrlok said.
"And what is that?" Tenzin asked.
"The Demon of Sparta." Tarrlok said making him frown knowing how much Sean hated that name. "We all know the legends. The power he has. He could end Amon and his Equalists without even trying." Tarrlok said.
"Those days are long behind him. And I would watch what you say. That name angers him beyond words." Tenzin said.
"Then the Task force is the only option. All in favor?" Tarrlok asked before the other three raised their hands before Tarrlok slammed the Gavel and smirked while Tenzin frowned.
Later
Sean was training Korra during the night while listening to Jazz music.
"Oh god." Sean said holding his ears listening to this music making Korra burst out laughing.
"Oh don't tell me the Great Protector hates Jazz music." Korra teased.
"No not Jazz just this song. It sounds like a bunch of screeching cats." Sean said making her laugh harder before it got all fuzzy. "The hell?" Sean said before.
"Good evening my fellow equalists." Amon said shocking Korra. "This is your leader, Amon. As you have heard, the Republic council has voted to make me public enemy number one, proving once again that the bending oppressors of this city will stop at nothing to quash our revolution. But we cannot be stopped. Not even the Demon of Sparta or the gods who have abandoned us can stop us." Amon said before Sean smashed the Radio.
"I fucking hate that name." Sean said before seeing the cold look on Korra's face before he placed a hand on her shoulder. "You okay?" Sean asked making her shake her head.
"Yeah...He just puts me on edge." Korra said.
"Don't worry. He's not getting anywhere near you. I promise." Sean said making her smile feeling better.
Later (Mako and Asami meet the same way as before so no real need to write about it if its exactly the same)
Tenzin and his family were getting ready to eat.
"We are grateful for this delicious food, for happiness, for compassion and..." Tenzin tried to say.
"I'm not interrupting, Am I?" Tarrlok asked walking in making Sean and Korra look at him.
"This is my home, Tarrlok. We're about to eat dinner." Tenzin said.
"Good, because I am absolutely famished. Airbenders never turn away a hungry Guest, am I right?" Tarrlok asked making him sigh.
"I suppose." Tenzin said sitting down while his wife frowned making him shrug.
"Oh, you must be the famous Avatar Korra. And this must be your protector the son of Zeus. It is truly an honor. I am councilman Tarrlok, representative of the Northern Water Tribe." Tarrlok said.
"A pleasure." Sean said plainly.
"I've read about your legends. After you chose a different path that is." Tarrlok said to Sean.
"Theres nothing legendary about me." Sean said plainly.
"Republic city is much better off now that both of them arrived." Tarrlok said.
"Tarrlok, what do you want?" Tenzin asked having enough of his games.
"Patience, Tenzin. I'm getting to that. As you may have heard, I am assembling a task force. I will strike at the heart of the revolution. And I want both of you to join me." Tarrlok said.
"Really?" Korra asked.
"What?" Tenzin asked annoyed.
"I need someone who will help me attack Amon directly, someone who is fearless in the face of danger, And that someone is both of you. After all...Everyone knows the stories about..." Tarrlok tried to say.
"No." Sean said confusing him.
"No what?" Tarrlok asked.
"I'm not joining your task force. My days of pointless fighting are over. My only job is to protect Korra with my life. Nothing more." Sean said.
"But...You once faced thousand of men alone without even getting a scratch." Tarrlok said.
"An exaggeration. My war days are over. I gave up that life 300 years ago." Sean said calmly.
"But the city..." Tarrlok said.
"I SAID NO AND I MEAN IT!" Sean yelled slamming his fist down startling the children.
"Easy Sean calm down." Korra said calming him down.
"Get out." Sean said making Tarrlok clear his throat.
"And what about you Avatar?" Tarrlok asked.
"I'm gonna also have to say no." Korra said.
"I'm not giving up that easily on both of you. But for now I will respect your wishes. It has been a pleasure." Tarrlok said leaving.
Sean growled before walking out as well and slammed the door.
"I'm gonna..." Korra tried to say.
"Go." Tenzin said before she rushed after him.
Sean was outside with a look of pure rage on his face before he came to a tree before he saw blood on his hands making him growl before smashing it as the blood vanished from his mind proving to be nothing but a memory of his past.
"Hey! Take it easy." Korra said holding his arm making him let out deep breaths to calm himself. "I get it Tarrlok brought up some painful memories." Korra said.
"Thats not it at all. He's just trying to use both of us. I know those intentions of his anywhere. I'm all too familiar about being a pawn." Sean said before Korra sat him down.
"It's all right just calm down." Korra said keeping him calm.
Next morning
Korra was playing with Naga while Sean was on top of Spyro's head trying to forget last night.
Coming to them was Bolin.
"Hello, fellow Teammate and good friend!" Bolin yelled making Sean chuckle in amusement.
"Hey Bolin. Staying out of trouble I hope." Sean said.
"Of course. Missed you guys at practice this week." Bolin said.
"Yeah, sorry about that." Korra said rubbing Naga's belly.
"Aw, it's all right. We're probably out of the tournament anyway. Unless some money miraculously drops out of the sky by tomorrow. Anyway, reason I came by was to give you this." Bolin said handing her a rose and a cupcake making her giggle.
"Wow thanks. Whats this for?" Korra asked.
"Uh...Oh, I can't remember now. Oh, yeah, now I remember. You guys saved me from Amon." Bolin said.
"The hell did you expect us to do? Just abandon you I don't think so." Sean in amusement making Korra giggle.
"It was no big deal." Korra said.
"Are you both serious? I was totally freaking out when he was coming at me with his creep mask, all, I will take away your bending forever. I mean, that is scary stuff." Bolin said.
"Fair enough." Sean said before one of Tarrlok's workers approached them with some basket.
"Tarrlok sends his compliments and urges you both to reconsider is offer." She said before Spyro snarled at her making her yelp before Spyro tried to eat her before she ran off.
"Good boy." Sean said laughing along with Korra and Bolin since Spyro while a meat eater never ate people.
"Who's this Tarrlok guy? Is he bothering you? Cause I could have a word with him." Bolin said making Sean chuckle.
"We appreciate the support Bolin but he's just a council member with Tenzin. Don't worry about it." Sean said.
Later
Sean had come back to the island after getting some food for Pema to make tonight when he saw the car that Ikki and Meelo were in pretending to drive.
"You gotta be kidding me." Sean said.
"Outta the way. We're driving here!" Ikki said making him shake his head in amusement.
"Yeah sure I'm so terrified." Sean said before getting the food to Pema before looking for Korra finding her in the practice ring. "Tarrlok's persistent I'll give him that." Sean said.
"Yeah, that guy doesn't know how to take no for an answer." Korra said practicing airbending moves.
"Korra, Are you...Doing all right?" Sean asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Korra said as Sean sat down.
"Why don't you take a break?" Sean asked as she sat next to him. "I'm glad you turned down Tarrlok, But I just wanted to make sure your decision was for the right reason." Sean said.
"I'm just really focused on my airbending right now is all." Korra said quickly.
"So you say. Are you sure it isn't because your afraid?" Sean asked making her look away. "Being afraid is a human trait in all of us. It's ok to admit it. It helps us overcome our fears as well." Sean said.
"Do you have any?" Korra asked though she doubted it.
"Yes. Failing protect you and keep you safe. Thats my mission." Sean said making her smile lightly before leaning on his shoulder.
Later that night Sean and Korra were looking at the stars when the same woman worked for Tarrlok approached them.
"Avatar Korra and Lord Kruger, I have something for you." She said before Korra looked annoyed and approached her.
"It doesn't matter how many gifts Tarrlok sends. We're not joining his task force!" Korra said using earth bending to turn her around and kicked her back about to sit back down.
"It's not a gift. It's an invitation."
"To what?" Sean asked.
"Tarrlok is throwing a gala in your honor. All of Republic city's movers and shakers will be there. The councilman humbly requests your attendance."
Sean frowned at this.
Later Tenzin and his family were at the event.
Sean of course was still in his armor while Korra was in a more formal dress which caught Sean's eye before she spotted him looking at her.
"What?" Korra asked.
"Nothing...You just look so beautiful." Sean said making her blush before a smile appeared on her face.
"I can't believe this is for both of us." Korra said.
"I don't know Tarrlok is up to, but keep your guard up. Nothing is ever as it seems." Sean said making her nod before said man approached them.
"So glade you both could make it. If you'll excuse us, The city awaits its heroes." Tarrlok said leading them away from Tenzin who looked around and then had a look of horror on his face.
"Meelo, No! That is not a toilet! Oh, dear." Tenzin said rushing to him, (HAHAHAHA!)
However as he went to stop him he noticed Lin with some woman. He quickly recognized this woman as one of the few Oracles of Republic City.
"What is she up to?" Tenzin asked.
"It is my pleasure to introduce Republic city's most famous industrialist, Hiroshi Sato." Tarrlok said introducing them.
"A pleasure." Sean said.
"We're all expecting great things from you." Hiroshi said making Sean frown slightly.
"Hey guys." Mako said approaching them with his brother along with a girl they were not familiar with.
"This is my daughter, Asami." Hiroshi said.
"It's lovely to meet you. Mako told me much about you two." Asami said.
"I don't mean to sound rude but he hasn't said anything about you." Korra said.
"We just met." Mako said leaving out she crashed into him. "Anyway I got some good news. Mr. Sato has agreed to sponsor our team." Mako said.
"Thats great." Korra said excited making Sean chuckle before spotting Lin approaching him. "Oh hell what do you want now?" Sean asked annoyed.
"To expose you for the monster you are." Lin said before the oracle appeared behind her.
"What the?" Sean tried to say.
"Chief Beifong has told me much of your history and that you are here to protect the Avatar. But...Is it the Avatar you truly wish to protect?" The Oracle asked before gently grabbing his head to show his memories to all in the room.
"NO WAIT!" Sean yelled.
Flashback (While Narrating picture Gaia's voice telling the story)
Everyone saw into Sean's early memories at the age of 15.
Once the youngest Captain in the Spartan Army he had begun his command with only 50 soldiers. But soon his numbers grew to the thousands as his desire for conquest had begun.
Sean's tactics were beyond brutal even for a spartan.
Everyone watched as Sean's kills were barbaric slicing off the heads of his enemies or smashing their faces into rocks as they begged for mercy. Korra herself was shocked not ever seeing this side of him before but remembered this was not who he was anymore.
Drunk with power Sean was feared by all in the lands of Greece.
Except one. His little Sister Calliope who never once feared him. And she was the most important person in his life always vowed to protect her.
However Sean's entire family resented him for his choices.
He was born into the powerful and rich family of Sparta that had great influence with the King. In their eyes war was pointless and they should change their ways for a better future but Sean saw the flaws in their views due to war always being a constant in life which led to conflict with one another.
"How much is enough Sean? When will it end!" Sean's mother Lysandra asked.
"When the Glory of Sparta is known throughout the world." Sean said arrogantly.
"The Glory of Sparta? You did this for yourself!" Lysandra said with blood tears in her eyes.
Sean's desire for conquest knew no bounds. And that which he desired would ultimately Consume him.
End Flashback
"By the gods! Why would Zeus send one such as you to protect the Avatar?" The Oracle asked before Sean fell to his knees and breathed shakily.
"Sean?" Korra said concerned as she never saw this before.
"I...I need to go." Sean said rushing outside while everyone glared at Lin for that cruel act. She herself was shocked by that reaction expecting him to get violent not become so weak.
"Lin." Tenzin said frowning at her making her sigh.
Rushing outside Sean leaning against the wall trying to calm himself down.
"Sean!" Korra yelled rushing to him before seeing him in such bad condition. "Are you ok?" Korra asked.
"No...I need to be alone for a while." Sean said running off.
"Wait!" Korra yelled but he was already gone making her sigh before she walked back inside.
"Look I didn't think that would happen." Lin said.
"And just what were you expecting to happen? For him to snap back to his old ways and kill everyone in the room?" Tenzin questioned.
"NO! I just..." Lin tried to say.
"Chief." Korra said approaching her.
"Look Kid I..." Lin tried to say before Korra punched her down shocking everyone especially her.
"You ever do something like that again and Amon is gonna be the least of your worries. That was cruel and vile." Korra said before walking away making her sigh.
Meanwhile
Sean sat at the docks with shaky breaths coming out as he rubbed his face.
Never did he expect his past to be revealed like that. The Stories were one thing but seeing it just reminded him of all the terrible things he's ever done.
As he was in his thoughts he failed to notice someone behind him with a dagger in hand approaching him slowly before he stood right above him with the knife aimed at his head.
"Go away Reznov." Sean said making him groan.
"Seriously?"
Sean turned and saw one of his best friends in his life. Johnathan Reznov who was from another Land and also the son of a god. He had white skin short brown hair and purple eyes.
"Hey Kruger." Reznov said pulling him up. "The hell's wrong with you?" Reznov asked.
Later
"Sounds like bitter bitch if you ask me." Reznov said as they sat on the docks.
"Yeah. That was cruel and vile. I know I deserve that but I didn't want Korra to see my past like that." Sean said.
"You care about her don't you?" Reznov asked.
"It's complicated. I knew one day she would see past that mask I always wore. The one that always made her smile. I took pride in knowing I made her life better even with her responsibilities." Sean said.
"I'm sure she'll understand what happened. You told me and Julia what happened because you trusted us. I'm sure she won't hate you." Reznov said before Tenzin rushed to them.
"Sean! We have problems!" Tenzin yelled.
"I'm in no mood Tenzin. Ask your bitch friend to deal with it." Sean said.
"It's Korra. She called out Amon to face her on memorial island." Tenzin said making Sean widen his eyes realizing in his vulnerable moments he neglected his duty to protect her.
"AGH! I'm a fucking idiot!" Sean yelled before jumping into the water and dashed off to save her.
Meanwhile
Korra groaned as she had her bending blocked before she was held by her arms as she looked up and gasped seeing Amon approaching her.
"I received your invitation, Young Avatar." Amon said about to reach for her making her eyes widen in fear.
'No! Sean, Please...HELP!' Korra screamed in her head for her protector.
Suddenly the heads came off of several Equalists that held Korra from a familiar blade that was attached to a chain before another chain wrapped around her before pulling her away.
"AHHH!" Korra yelled before she found herself in the arms of the one she needed most.
"Sean?" Korra said weakly.
"I told you. I would always protect you with my life." Sean said before setting her down. "I'll handle this." Sean said before glaring at Amon.
"Ah the Demon of Sparta. We meet again...Alone." Amon said.
"He ain't alone." Reznov said approaching him before standing beside his best friend.
"And who are you? Another son of the Gods Of Olympus who abandoned us?" Amon questioned.
"Half right but wrong religion." Reznov said before more Equalists arrived. "How do you wanna play this?" Reznov asked.
"Get them outside." Sean said before rushing for Korra and picked her up before the two ran.
"After them." Amon said getting his followers to do so.
Arriving outside they didn't see them until the water began to move around wildly before taking form.
"You challenge us Mortals?" Sean asked before he was in his water form he used to fight Zaheer so many years ago before Reznov had a lightning form around him. "Gods of Olympus and Asgard?" Sean questioned shocking them.
"I thought true warriors didn't hide? Come out of that water and face us." Amon challenged.
"You have disrespected the gods for the last time, Amon!" Sean roared before summoning waves of water on the memorial island washing up several of his pawns. "I will leave nothing of you in my wake!" Sean roared before Reznov summoned storms of lightning to strike the Equalists making them scream in pain as they were killed. "I once crushed the entire Persian Empire by myself. What hope do you have?" Sean questioned before sending another wave of water at them.
From the shores everyone watched in awe at the great display of power between a God of Olympus and a God of Asgard.
"Unbelievable." Asami said in awe.
Sean roared as he stabbed his trident on the ground before electrocuting more Equalists.
"I think I get the point. We'll leave." Amon said before his remaining followers left.
"You aren't going anywhere!" Reznov roared before striking the entire island with lightning before he and Sean returned to normal size with the later holding Korra as she was knocked out. As she was unconscious she received visions before she opened her eyes seeing her protector.
"Sean?" Korra asked as he looked down on her.
"Rez." Sean said.
"I'll leave you two alone." Reznov said before using his power to fly away on a trail of lightning.
"Are you okay?" Sean asked before she started crying
"I was so terrified! I felt so Helpless" Korra cried.
"Shhh. I know. It wasn't hard to tell." Sean said sitting down.
"You...You were right. I've been scared this whole time. I...I've never felt like this before and... Sean, I don't know what to do." Korra cried.
"Shhh." Sean said calming her down as he held her. "Admitting our fears is the first and most difficult step to conquering them. And like I said. I will always protect you with my life. No matter what." Sean said making her cry harder.
Later
Sean and Korra arrived back on the island after she calmed down.
"There you two are." Reznov said leaning against a tree.
"Who are you?" Korra asked..
"This is one of my best friends. Johnathan Reznov. Son of Thor Prince of Asgard." Sean said.
"You...Never said you went to other lands." Korra said.
"I thought maybe seeing the rest of the world would help me heal in time. Along the road I made a couple friends who were the children of gods. Reznov was the first of them." Sean said making him grin.
"Just wait till you meet Julia. I guarantee anything she's on her way here." Reznov said making him scoff.
"I would not be surprised." Sean said before leading Korra inside.
"Um Sean...About what I saw when Lin..." Korra tried to say but he placed a finger on her lips with a small smile.
"Don't worry. I'm fine. Just needed some time alone. Eventually I will have to tell you the full story of my past. And no being a Spartan Captain isn't what I regret if thats what your probably thinking. It just led me down that dark path. But for now you need to rest. This whole day has been one majorly league mind fuck." Sean said making her smile lightly.
"Um...Could you stay with me again tonight?" Korra asked making him nod before he got in the bed across from her.
Even after all this she still felt safe with him and didn't care about his past. This was the real him now and thats all she cared about before sleep claimed them both.
Authors Note: And another Chapter done in a single day. This is why I love weekends gives me more time to get these done. Anyway now you know part of Sean's past and a friend of his from another land who is also a half god. Next Chapter we see what started Sean's dark path.
