"Ron, why don't you start off by saying the spell?" McGonagall suggested. Ron looked terrified. He knew he was not good at all with Transfiguration and with his broken wand, he was even more rubbish. He nodded his head though and prepared himself.
He cleared his throat and said the spell. After the spell was cast, everyone gasped as a man sat on the table instead of Ron's rat. McGonagall was pointed the wand right at the man. She told the class that they were dismissed and had them run tell the Headmaster to come immediately to her classroom and inform the Auror office to come as well. She had Harry, Ron, and Hermione stay, but they stood on the other side of the classroom.
"Professor, who is that?" Ron asked, horrified.
"Someone who the world thought was dead. Peter Pettigrew." Professor Dumbledore walked in and raised his wand also at Peter Pettigrew. "Peter, how is it that you are alive?" Dumbledore asked.
After being a rat for so long, it took Peter a while to get his bearings straight and act like a human again. He started quivering, realizing what happened. He turned and saw Harry. "Harry! You look just like your father! Ron, I was your rat, please don't let them do anything to hurt me!" he begged.
"Why would they do anything to harm you?" Ron asked.
"And how do you know my father?" Harry countered.
"Harry, this man was your parent's secret keeper. They knew where the Potter's were hiding and led Voldemort to where you were. He and James were friends during their time here at school. I am assuming that he killed those three muggles that were found in the alleyway by the Potter's Manor to frame Sirius Black, your godfather," Dumbledore guessed.
Peter squirmed and confessed. "What would you have done? He would have tortured and killed me if I did not give up the hiding place. Yes, I told him. Yes, I killed those muggles, and yes, I framed my best friend, Sirius to take the fall. I cut off my finger to make everyone believe that I was dead. I was a coward, I know. I am sorry."
The Aurors had arrived and was escorted to the Transfiguration room and arrested Peter Pettigrew for murder, unregistered Animagus, and treachery and sent him straight to Azkaban. When Peter Pettigrew had left with the Aurors, McGonagall and Dumbledore looked at Harry and asked, "Are you okay?"
"I don't know," he answered truthfully.
"I cannot believe that he was my rat," Ron said, looking white in the face. "He was in my bed every night! And before that, he was Percy's rat! What will happen to him?"
"He will be sent to Azkaban and await his trial there. With his confession, I am sure that he will never be able to see the light of day again. After that, it is up to the Dementors. And I am sure that they will let Sirius Black go."
Chapter Two: Sirius's reaction in Azkaban
It was another dreadful day. He could hear his demented cousin's laughter from across the hall. He tried to drown them out. Instead, he focused on the waves down below. He was wondering how his best friend, Remus, was doing; where Peter was. The anniversary of the death of James and Lily was fast approaching. Just as he was getting lost in his thoughts, the door to his cell started to rattle. That was never good news. He prepared himself for the worst. "Black, Sirius! You are commanded to come with us to the Ministry of Magic," ordered the voice.
Sirius looked confused and terrified. Perhaps they have decided to let the Dementors give him the kiss. Trying to keep his fears swallowed, he followed the Aurors. When he arrived, instead of putting him in a cell in the interrogation room, he was allowed to stand free, in the middle of the room. This was very odd indeed. Never, not once, had he been able to stand in the middle in the vast room. He did see that the cell was being occupied by another man but did not have time to register who it was. The Minister of Magic arrived, with Albus Dumbledore.
"Sirius Orion Black, twelve years ago, you stood here, facing trial for murder of three Muggles, and performing magic in front of them, as well as being a suspect Death Eater, giving the Dark Lord valuable information. In light of new evidence, you are hereby innocent of these crimes and will be set free from Azkaban starting immediately," he announced.
Sirius's mouth dropped open, scarcely believing what was happening. "I am sorry sir, but what new evidence?" But Fudge turned to the prisoner and stated: "Peter Pettigrew, you are here by sentenced to life in Azkaban for murder!" Peter shrieked. Sirius could not believe it. He stood there with his mouth wide open. He was caught. The bloody coward was caught! "Do you have any last words?" Fudge asked.
Peter turned to his friend and said, "I am sorry. You did not deserve this. I know, I am a coward." Sirius could not even process the words that was being said to him. After his shackles were removed, and Peter was on the way to Azkaban to take Sirius's place, Dumbledore approached him.
"Dumbledore, thank you for never giving up on me," Sirius said with great appreciation. "But how did you find Peter and how did he end up confessing?"
"You're welcome. We have a lot to talk about. Why don't we go to Hogwarts, to my office," he suggested. Sirius nodded and followed Dumbledore out of the Ministry of Magic and when they were free and clear, they apparated to Hogwarts. Seeing the school again for the first time in a long time, tears came in Sirius's eyes. He was home again. Memories of times at the school flooded his senses. He remembered when James, Peter, and he would go in the forest with Lupin during the full moon.
"I am sure that you would like some food and a shower and some new clothes," Dumbledore said.
"It feels good to be back home. Harry! Is he going here?"
"Yes, he is. He looks like James, except for his eyes, he has Lily's eyes. He is a bright young wizard. His friends remind me of Lily, Remus, and you, to James. Would you like to see him? Minerva has told Harry everything. It appears that Peter hid from everyone's radar by being a rat to the Weasley's and has been living there for years. If it was not for Ron's transfiguration spell to backfire, we possibly would never have found him."
"I am thankful then that it backfired. You said that Harry was like James; how close is the likeness?" he asked, almost afraid of the answer.
Dumbledore laughed and answered, "In his first year, Harry not only battled a Troll; he also made the Quidditch team and became the youngest Seeker in a century, and he also faced Voldemort. Yes, he is back."
"Jesus, he sounds worse than James! How is it that the school hasn't been burned down yet?" he joked. "How is it that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named still alive?" he asked, horrified that You-Know-Who was back.
"I have no idea. That is a mystery that still confuses everybody. My guess is that his spirit attached to one of his followers, Quirrell, and that is how he survived. I hope that when Quirrell died, so did Voldemort's spirit and there is no other way for him to come back again." They arrived in the Headmaster's office and Dumbledore gave Sirius some new clothes and he took a bath before meeting Harry for the first time in 12 years. He was nervous.
When he walked out of the bathroom, there was a plate of goodies at the table, no doubt the Elves had provided the meal. This was one of his favorite part of being at school. The food was amazing and when the plates were empty, it was automatically refilled. He smiled and started eating. This was so much better than the food that he received at Azkaban.
There was a knock on the door and Professor McGonagall walked in with a young boy. As soon as Sirius saw him, he knew that Dumbledore was right. Harry was the spitting image of his father, except his eyes. Those were Lily's. He stood up and wiped his hands. Minerva smiled. "Sirius. It is so good to see you again," she said warmly.
"It's good to see you too Professor," he replied, giving her a big hug, which took her by surprise, but she was happy to return the hug. After they separated, Sirius looked down at Harry. "Harry, I know you probably don't remember me, but I am Sirius. When you were born, they had named me your Godfather. I am so sorry that it took this long to meet. I am sure that you have many questions."
"I think I vaguely remember you from long ago." Sirius smiled at this. He took this as a start.
"When you had turned two, I gave you your first training broom so you could practice Quidditch. Your mother was furious. She told us that you had no right being on a broom that young and that if you got hurt, we would get hurt too." He laughed at the memory. "Professor Dumbledore says that you are the youngest Seeker in a century, and that you caught the snitch in your mouth, nearly swallowing it!"
"He is quite the young star," Minerva praised.
Harry blushed and smiled. "When Hagrid gave me a photo album, he added a picture of us in the living room and me chasing a ball." He sat down and they ate the food that was available and caught up. Harry asked him questions and he answered them. Sirius asked him, "I know we just met, but if you are so unhappy at your Aunt and Uncle's house, you are more than welcome to come live with me. I know it is sudden."
"Really! I would love it! We could live on a farm where you can see the sun always!" Sirius smiled. Suddenly, the door burst open and Remus Lupin stood in the doorway. "Sirius! It's true!" he exclaimed. Sirius jumped up and embraced his old friend, tears running down both of their faces. "I never thought I would see you again," Sirius whispered. Remus just embraced him harder. Harry examined the man that had burst into the room and gasped. "I remember you! Dad would call you Moony! During the winter, I would like to snuggle with you because you were warm!" Lupin looked at Harry and smiled.
"You look so much like your dad! Except you…"
"Have my mother's eyes," Harry finished. Lupin smiled and embraced Harry.
"You are right about that. I am sorry that I have not been around. I was not privy to where you were hiding. We had to keep you safe, even if it meant not watching you grow up, or raising you."
"I understand," Harry said truthfully.
Epilogue:
At the end of school, Harry went to the Dursley's for a couple of weeks. After he had blown up Vernon's sister, Marge, he walked out and spent the rest of the summer between Sirius and Remus's house and when it was close to the start of term, he stayed with the Weasley's when they returned from Egypt. Sirius had gifted Ron an owl upon their return. He was grateful for it and named it Pigwidgeon. Lupin ended up teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was by far Harry's favorite class that year.
