"Is Michaela in there with you? I want my freaking trophy back!" Asher continued shouting and pounding while Connor was laughing his ass off. Laurel went to the window to try and get a look at him and if he was leaving when he suddenly knocked at the exact same window.
"Everybody get down." She ordered and everyone except for Connor and Cassy lay down on the floor. "Connor!" Laurel begged when he was trying to control his laughter.
"I can talk to him. Let me talk to him may- maybe I-I-I- I can-" Cassy stuttered, fearing that he would waltz right in and see their crime.
"No! Get down!" Wes exclaimed and Cassy took a few steps back hitting a wall, before sliding down to the floor, tears in her eyes.
"And you guys call me immature? I´m like the most grown up grown-up ever!" they heard Asher shouting and Cassy pressed her eyes together, not wanting them to see her cry. The realization of what had happened hit her and she felt overwhelmed as she looked at Connor lying next to Sam in puddle of blood.
"We should just let him in. If he´s been in the house, he´ll suddenly be a part of it. Six of us witnessed it." Laurel panted and everyone looked at her.
"Then daddy Millstone can help get us off." Connor agreed and Cassy shook her head.
"We could get him to step in the blood, it´s not a bad idea." Rebecca suggested and Wes looked around in shock.
"No! We can´t do this. He wasn´t here, he wasn´t part of this." Cassy insisted and Wes agreed.
"Do you think I wanted to be a part in any of this?" Connor hissed at the young girl and she sighed, feeling the panic in her rising.
"Wait. Listen." Laurel ended the discussion. "He´s gone."
"I texted him. Told him I was at the library." Michaela suddenly spoke up and everyone seemed to calm down again.
5 weeks earlier
Cassy sat on her place in Annalise´s class, barely awake and still hungover from the previous night and ridden with embarrassment of her trying to kiss Frank. She was too consumed with her own thoughts to realize that Wes was missing and the trophy on his seat. Annalise seemed to have noticed however, as she looked as though she was zoning out in the middle of talking about habeas corpus. Soon after she continued with her lesson, Bonnie walked in informing her about a case. The attorney dismissed the class but kept the remaining of her Keating students there, telling them about a case where a man was wrongfully convicted for the murder of his girlfriend because he was a poor, black man and that the supreme court granted Annalise one last chance to get him off death row.
"Looks like the Keating 6 might be a Keating 5 from now on." Connor mentioned as him and his peers walked to the front of the class room.
"Maybe Wes is sick." Laurel defended the absentee, causing Michaela to argue and say that he might have dropped out.
"That means the trophy is in play." Asher realized, taking a seat next to Michaela while Laurel rolled her eyes, begging them to stop talking about the trophy. "It´s only stupid cause you know you´ll never win it, L-l-l-loser."
"Guys please don´t shout so much." Cassy whispered with a painful expression and her hand on her head.
"Geez, are you hungover?" Connor mocked her and she rolled her eyes.
"How´d you guess?" she asked sarcastically, taking a sip of her water.
"I can smell the alcohol on your breath. Mint?" he teased the younger girl who felt even more embarrassed, taking the mint with a grateful look.
The students headed over to the house while Annalise prepared in her office. They went through the statements made during the first trial.
"Objection." Connor said the lines of the original attorney. "Did the witness at the time know the caliber of the weapon, said defense attorney George Gabler."
"Sustained, said Judge Mills- wait." Laurel spoke checking the paper she had in hand. "Millstone?"
"Ha, very funny." Asher said annoyed while the others all looked at him confused.
"I´m not kidding, your dad´s William Millstone, right?" Laurel looked again and Asher and Bonnie both went to her, also checking it.
"I guess we finally know why you´re here." Connor mumbled and Cassy threw a pen at him, mouthing that he should stop.
"That can´t be true." Asher read over the lines on Laurel´s paper while Cassy watched Annalise leaving the house. She noticed Sam walking into the hallway and smiling at her to which she quickly looked away which didn´t go unnoticed by Bonnie. When she took another glimpse in to her boss´ husband direction she saw him waving her over and pointing at his wrist watch which lead to her remembering they had made an appointment for another session.
"Where are you going?" Michaela asked when Cassy stood up.
"I just need to talk to Mister Keating for a moment." She pointed in his direction but didn´t answer further questions as to what for.
"Don´t they know about me counseling you?" Sam asked when they were in his office and sat down in the places they were the other day.
"They think I´m weird enough." She giggled folding her hands over her knees. "So, what do we talk about today?"
"I think we could talk about why you felt rejected from Lila." Sam put his glasses on, writing something in a journal.
"Well, I told you, she changed." Cassy shrugged.
"Yes, she found other friends, kept secrets from you, but that is something normal to do. Why do you think it hurt you so much?" he inquired and Cassy sighed.
"I think…I don´t know I-…I was at a vulnerable time, I guess. I found out that I was adopted only a few months beforehand and I guess…I don´t know maybe that made me less trusting." Cassy stuttered and Sam looked up surprised.
"Can you tell me about that adoption? What your parents told you?" he wondered and Cassy looked around, trying not to make eye contact.
"That they took me in when I was 3 years old, that my real parents couldn´t take care of me anymore, that I am from Philadelphia and I don´t remember any of it. They were even given pictures of me as a baby so I wouldn´t ask questions." Cassy explained and Sam wrote everything down.
"Seems like your birth parents didn´t want you to find out. How did you find out?"
"My parents told me. When I said I was thinking of going to Middleton they wanted me to know. It gave me even more reason to come." She told him and he nodded.
"Any luck of finding them?" he wondered and Cassy hesitated for a moment before shaking her head.
"No, I haven´t really started looking, though." She lied which she couldn´t quite see if he noticed or not.
"It is common with adoptees to ask themselves why someone would give them up and have trust and abandonment issues. It´s only natural that you felt Lila slipping through your fingers." Sam explained and Cassy looked down at her hands.
"Did you know her? Lila? I mean besides the obvious reason why the whole town knows her now. Did you know her well?" Cassy wanted to know and Sam furrowed his eyebrows while shaking his head.
"No, I only knew her from class. She was very attentive and smart but I never talked much with her." He lied with a soft smile. Cassy nodded uncomfortably and leaned back in her chair. "Is there something you want to tell me?" he asked and she hesitated, biting her lip nervously.
"Annalise asked me if I knew that Lila was having an affair…and I didn´t. I mean I would have never guessed, Lila wouldn´t do this. But after yesterday´s session…all that sneaking around and keeping secrets…maybe she did have an affair. But how would Annalise know? I mean she had Lila´s phone but who would be stupid enough and keep evidence of an affair on their phone?" Cassy thought out loud and Sam swallowed, something in his expression changing.
"Maybe Rebecca told her." He suggested and Cassy leaned forward, seemingly more attentive.
"Yes. Maybe she wanted to introduce another suspect. An affair would definitely seem more reasonable for killing Lila than her. That bitch really tries everything to get free, even lying." She admitted and Sam seemed less uncomfortable.
Frank and Laurel were in the kitchen, pouring coffee into their mugs.
"Can I ask you a favor?" he asked her and she looked up surprised, but nodded as she put sugar into her mug. "Could you maybe borrow Cassy´s hairbrush?"
"What? Why?" Laurel wanted to know but Frank shrugged.
"It´s best if you don´t know. I just need her hairbrush." He insisted and Laurel shook her head.
"No. What are you trying to do? Run her DNA to see if she´s a criminal?" she furrowed her eyebrows, not liking what the older man expected of her.
"No nothing like that I…urgh forget it." He took his mug and left the kitchen only to run into Cassy who was exiting Sam´s office at the same time. They looked at each other for a brief second before she cleared her throat.
"About last night…" she started but Frank just passed her, saying he didn´t wanna talk about it and she should just forget it. "Alright then." She mumbled to herself, watching the man walk away into the living room. She followed him as soon as she heard Annalise talking about Wes and was surprised to see him standing next to her.
"So, Wes, you´re not contagious, are you?" Michaela asked sarcastically once the professor was out of earshot.
"Ignore them." Laurel said, pointing at Michaela, Connor and Asher who were mocking him. "They just know that if they ever skipped class, Annalise would not care."
"So, what do I need to know about the case?" Wes asked, following Laurel´s advice and Cassy returned to the spot she was in before her session with Sam. Not shortly after Annalise came out of her office giving them all work to do as they had only 65 hours left until their appeal. Laurel and Wes should talk to the previous attorney while Connor and Michaela were visiting the prosecutor. Asher and Bonnie were tasked to find the eyewitness and talk to her.
"What about me? What can I do?" Cassy asked, seeing as she was the only one left.
"You…you go help Frank." Annalise ordered and Cassy looked at Frank who was standing a bit further away, rolling his eyes.
"Can´t I maybe switch with someone?" Cassy asked, biting her lip nervously attracting more attention than she would have liked.
"If you don´t want to do the job I´m assigning you with you can go home." Annalise simply replied before retreating to her office. The other students and Bonnie left the house, while Frank and Cassy stayed back.
"So, what are we doing?" she asked awkwardly when she walked over to him.
"Maybe it´s best if you just go over the files again, I gotta do something here." He pointed at his laptop with a fake smile and Cassy nodded unsure.
"Okay, but you know, maybe I can help you…I mean that´s what Annalise said, right? That I should help you." Cassy stuttered and Frank sighed, running his hands through his hair.
"Look, I know I have this certain thing that just makes you students wanna jump me, but you need to back off. I´m not interested." He stated in a cold tone which took Cassy aback before she started bursting out laughing.
"Oh, okay, I get it. You think you´re so hot and irresistible with your three-piece and your hair gel…" she noted while making wild gestures around him. "That kiss…didn´t mean anything. I was drunk and I thought you were into me. Let´s just forget it okay?" she smiled and he wanted to argue but also found it to be unnecessary. "So, what are you doing and how can I help?"
"Since Annalise wants you to help me, I guess I can tell you. I´m looking for Rebecca. She´s gone." He admitted and Cassy´s eyes widened.
"She skipped bail? Well, that´s not really surprising, to be honest." She didn´t even try to hide her distain as she grabbed a chair and sat down next to Frank. "So, what are your options?"
"Well, I´ll try to find her drug connections, she´s probably with them and if those are a dead end, you might be helpful, since you know her." He suggested and Cassy nodded interested.
"Yeah I might be of help now. I know where she went. Well, at least I know where she and Lila always used to go to. I can take you there." She offered and Frank shook his head.
"No, Annalise said just find where she is, she can´t see us." He explained and Cassy stood up enthusiastically.
"She won´t, trust me, I know the place. Come on we can do a stake out, it´ll be fun." She cheered and Frank gave in, seeing as she wasn´t going to give up.
"I´ll just tell Annalise I´ll have to meet up with a guy." He agreed and Cassy grabbed her purse happily.
Cassy and Frank sat in her car as they watched a dark shed. They bought coffee on their way which both were drinking from, an awkward silence ruling the atmosphere.
"What exactly is it you do, Frank?" Cassy suddenly asked with an interested look and he looked over from the corner of his eyes.
"Stuff." He huffed as he took another sip from the hot beverage.
"What a job description." Cassy laughed. "No, seriously, what do you do? I know that you have your connections but other than that what are your assets for Annalise? Bonnie is a lawyer, we are her students…"
"I…I am there when Annalise needs something. I make sure that everything goes according to plan and yes, sometimes I have to pull a few strings to do so." He explained vaguely and Cassy nodded as she watched him not taking his eyes away from the shed.
"So, you´re her lapdog?" she teased him.
"Don´t call me that." He replied annoyed. "You should probably use less time asking questions about me and watch that shed more closely." Frank advised her and she rolled her eyes with a sigh, turning back to the place she thought Rebecca to be in.
"It´s been hours, nothing happened. Let´s go back." Frank said but Cassy insisted on staying.
"No, trust me this is the place she always went when she was in trouble." Cassy scanned the area, hoping for any sign of Rebecca.
"How do you even know that? Thought you hated her." Frank asked, taking a bite from a bagel they got on their way there.
"I do…She once was in trouble and Lila needed to get here and asked me to drive her because her car was broken. That´s how I know of this place." She explained and Frank nodded. The girl leaned back in her seat and sighed, realizing they just spent the last few hours watching an empty shed and the sun was already high up in the sky. "Maybe we should go back. See if Annalise needs my help on the case." She suggested and Frank nodded.
"Yeah, I´ll just look into the connections I mentioned earlier." He agreed as they drove off.
"It was fun though, right? I mean we got breakfast, we got to talk like normal people…I always wanted to do a stakeout." Cassy giggled and Frank sighed, looking to the rear bench.
"Yeah…you know if you need a place to stay,…I can borrow you some money for a hotel." He offered but Cassy shook her head.
"No, no I like it here. I can go wherever I want, it´s free, I don´t have to live by other people´s rules…I like it." She smiled and he scoffed.
Cassy and Frank returned to the house when the others were already there, informing Annalise of their findings. Michaela talked about how the prosecutor hinted at there being a perjured testimony.
"What did I miss?" Cassy whispered as she sat down next to Laurel.
"Nothing. Where were you two?" she asked her, a hint of jealousy in her voice.
"Nowhere…running some errands for Annalise." Cassy lied as she listened to Connor and Michaela who accused Asher´s father of pressuring to convict David Allen perhaps motivated by race.
"Okay, seriously my father is not a sleaze." Asher had enough of all the talk about his father, whom he thought very highly of. "He wasn´t a part of some racist scheme."
"Really? Where is it you summer again?" Laurel asked rhetorically and Asher scoffed, saying that there weren´t just white people in Kennebunkport.
"Dude, you need to calm down." Cassy mumbled and Asher rolled his eyes.
"You´re one to talk, Cas." He answered, using a nickname she hasn´t been called a long time. "My father wrote the book on judicial conduct, literally. He´s a highly respected federal judge. You don´t get to where he´s gotten by burying evidence of perjury." He defended his father but Annalise still ordered the students to look into Judge Millstone as a new target, which caused Asher to storm out and leave the house.
Connor pulled out of the driveway and started driving down the busy street where drunk people were running to the bonfire.
"There´s a gas station up on Elm that´s open." Laurel told them as she searched for spots to get the supplies. Cassy really tried hard not to puke all over the dead body next to her.
"Where´s Elm?" Connor asked. "Maybe Sam knows, I mean he´s lived here the longest, right?" he chuckled, hitting the corpse in the carpet.
"We shouldn´t stop around here. We could run into people we know." Wes explained and the rest agreed. "We go to route 6 and we´ll find a station out there."
"Oh my god. It´s Asher." Laurel suddenly gasped and Connor hit the brakes as he saw Asher walking over a crosswalk. They all ducked down watching their peer talk on the phone. Cassy peeked over the rear bench to see what was going on.
"If he sees us, we can just drive him over, right?" Cassy asked and the rest turned back to look at her in shock. "I´m just saying he already thinks we were at the house, if he sees us with this carpet…"
"We are not driving over our classmate surrounded by all those people!" Wes cleared things up and Cassy slipped back down to a sitting position.
"She´s right though." Connor agreed, gripping the steering wheel even tighter.
"Connor, listen to me…we´ve got one dead body on our conscience…we don´t want another." Wes tried to get the idea out of the distraught man´s head. By the time Connor´s grip loosened up, Asher was gone as well.
"Two hours ago, you wanted to talk to him when he was at the house and now you want to kill him?" Michaela hissed at Cassy who cradled her head in her hands.
"I- I- I don´t know what has gotten into me this…it just came out of nowhere, okay?" she tried to rectify it, but the damage was already done.
"What´s wrong with looking into Daddy Doucheface?" Connor asked when they all read through the files of the David Allen case.
"Would you want one of us doing it to yours?" Michaela retorted as Connor sat down next to her.
"Sure. Maybe they could actually tell me something about the guy." He joked and Michaela rolled her eyes.
"Someone have Daddy issues?" she acted compassionate with a joking undertone.
"Someone have a gay fiancé?" Connor faked a smile, making Michaela exhale annoyed.
"If these two don´t stop bickering soon, I might actually kill myself." Cassy sighed and got an agreeing nod from Wes and Laurel. Right then Annalise came home, however, to her disappointment no one actually found anything on Judge Millstone. The attorney ordered them to continue looking as Wes went up to speak with her in private.
"So, you and Frank are getting close, huh?" Laurel asked Cassy silently so that no one could listen to their conversation.
"I don´t know what you mean. We´re just friendly with one another." Cassy replied, confused as to what Laurel was insinuating.
"Oh, come on, you slept at his place after the law review party, now you were out getting breakfast together…something´s must be going on between you two." Laurel insisted on Cassy telling her but the latter just shook her head.
"No, I swear nothing´s going on…nothing. Besides, why do you even care aren´t you seeing Kan?" Cassy whispered, wanting this to be over and Laurel cleared her throat, leaning back in her chair.
"No, yeah I am…I just…it´s probably not a good idea to date him you know?" she tried to find her way out of it and Cassy nodded suspicious.
"Right, that´s why I´m not dating him." She raised her eyebrows and turned her focus back on the files.
There were only 12 more hours left till court and Asher came back and talked to Annalise. Shortly after she gathered the students together and told them about Art Trucco, a State Senator, for who someone had lied on the stand. The 6 of them all walked around the living room, reading the testimonies again and going through the initial reports. They worked the whole night, sleep deprivation taking it´s toll and making them fall asleep eventually. Only Laurel stayed up, continuing to look for a connection to Trucco when she left the room to talk to Frank. Cassy woke up by the entry door being shut and looked around, still groggy from her nap. Connor´s snoring made her scoff a little, knowing full-well he would never admit to it. Although she was lying on the couch, surrounded by boxes and files it was still more comfortable than her car. When she looked up from the chaos around her, she saw Laurel and Bonnie walk into the kitchen. Curiousness taking over her, she followed them and eavesdropped on the pair, overhearing them talk about how Laurel should stay away from Frank.
"What are you doing?" she suddenly heard Sam whisper behind her and with a quiet gasp she turned around and faced him.
"Nothing." She quickly lied as Sam looked past her and saw the two women talking in the kitchen. He then looked back to Cassy who pressed her lips together, not wanting to admit to anything.
"Did you find anything helpful on the case?" he asked her quietly and she shook her head. "Then go and find something instead of spying on your colleagues." He ordered and with a scared nod Cassy wanted to walk back into the living room when Sam grabbed her arm tightly and held her back. "Don´t do that again."
"Mister Keating, you´re hurting me." She whispered in a scared tone, clearly realizing he had one too many drinks. They stared at each other for another moment before he let her go and she hurried back to her place on the couch, still rattled up about their encounter.
After what had happened with Sam Cassy couldn´t fall asleep anymore and she continued to look over the files on the David Allen case when not shortly after Laurel came back from the kitchen. Cassy decided not to say anything to her and Laurel did the same. A few hours later the rest of their group woke up as well and continued working, while Connor was more interested in interrogating Wes about his relations with Rebecca.
"Must be hot, sleeping with a murderer." Connor slurped his coffee much to Wes´ annoyance.
"Wait you´re screwing our client?" Asher asked shocked, which Wes quickly denied.
"Not that I care, but I would be careful with Rebecca. She´s a snake." Cassy advised him, taking a bite from an apple.
"You don´t even know her well enough to make that judgement." Wes yawned and Cassy scoffed, which was very enjoyable entertainment for Connor.
"You mean because you two have such a meaningful connection?" Cassy pouted and mocked Wes with a sarcastic face. "You´re nothing to her, just a pawn that she can use for whatever she wants."
"Are you done?" Wes crossed his arms, annoyed by his peers making fun of their client and someone who he really liked. "And the guy with the corrupt dad doesn´t get to say crap about me right now." He said to Asher to which the rest of the students, except for Cassy, also stated their opinions, making Asher so angry he ran towards Connor but tripped over one of the many boxes and fell to the ground.
"That´s the best thing I´ve seen in days." Connor admitted when Annalise entered the chaotic living room asking what the hell has been going on there.
"Wait, what is this?" Asher groaned in pain when he held up a piece of paper. "I´ve seen this logo before. In Linda Morelli´s parking garage." He remembered, standing up from the ground. "The key eye-witness lives in a building owned by Senator Trucco." Slowly the realization hit the others that Asher had just literally tripped over the final piece of evidence they needed to bring down the Senator and possibly win the case.
A few hours later, in which the students freshened up, they sat in the court room, awaiting the trial to start. Frank came in a bit later, whispering something to Annalise before taking his seat with the rest of her group. The trial began and Annalise talked to Miss Morelli, the alleged eye-witness from the crime. Naturally, she denied any claims that she lied on the stand back then to which Annalise responded with wanting the judges to bring in Senator Trucco and let them hear his testimony. They allowed it and after a short recess he was brought in and Annalise interrogated him. She went off on him in a powerful speech, ignoring the chief justice who banged his gavel and called on her to stop and the prosecutor objecting her method. All students were on the edge of their seats, listening to the defense attorney as she went on to talk about poverty and race. The judges ordered a recess after Annalise stopped her rant and the Keating 6 waited outside on the hallway admiring what had just happened.
"That was incredible." Cassy mumbled and the rest agreed.
"If she gets disbarred, does it go on our records too?" Asher wanted to know, earning annoyed glances from his peers. After some time everyone entered the courtroom again and the chief justice moved on to talk about the disrespectful behavior of Annalise, however, that her arguments, as well as the case against her client were formed purely on speculation and that the supreme court recommended that the prosecution looked into the actions of Senator Trucco and the original witness. He proceeded to turn to David Allen and told him that they had to vacate the conviction and prohibit a re-trial, resulting in him being a free man. The audience gasped in relieve and Cassy felt a few tears coming up when she saw David and his family embrace in tears. Asher looked at his hands, something seemingly bothering him.
"You okay?" Cassy asked him quietly and he looked at her sternly before looking down again. "If you wanna talk we can-" she wanted to offer to listen to him but he cut her off by standing up and walking out of the courtroom.
That night Cassy sat in her car outside of Asher´s, wanting to go in and comfort him when she got a call from her old roommate Kendall.
"Did you hear?" she was asked and Cassy was confused as to what she was talking about. "Griffin. He was arrested for Lila´s murder. They found her phone in his car and there was a picture of another man´s dick on it. They think he killed her because she had an affair." Kendall explained and Cassy stared into nothingness, processing the information.
"Her phone…" she mumbled while Kendall went on, talking about how she never expected Griffin to do something like this. Cassy hung up without saying another word and drove off.
"What the hell?" Frank cursed when he opened his door after Cassy pounded on it several times.
"You did this, didn´t you?" she asked holding up her phone showing an article about how Lila´s phone was found in Griffin´s car. "Don´t lie to me Frank."
"What makes you think I did it?" he played it cool, not letting the girl in.
"Because you are Annalise´s lapdog. Because you do her biding. Because you have your connections." Cassy shrugged, tears in her eyes.
"Don´t call me that." He answered dryly and with an angry face, making her scoff.
"You framed him. Annalise made you frame him and it may be because she knows Rebecca won´t have a chance otherwise or because…I don´t know…but Griffin did not have Lila´s phone, Rebecca did. And Griffin did not know about the affair, Rebecca did. And I bet you anything that Rebecca killed her. And now you are helping Annalise frame him." Cassy hissed and Frank stepped forward, almost closing the door behind him.
"You should get some sleep, before you say something you regret." He warned her and she looked at him with a shocked expression.
"Is that a threat?" she questioned, not backing down and he came even closer, their bodies almost touching.
"Whatever you make of it." He simply answered before walking inside and closing his door on her.
