Chapter 5
Fenton and Laura were at the game. "That's my boys!" Laura cheered. Fenton clapped the last play. It had been a brilliant pass from his son Frank to Joe. A man came over and sat beside Fenton. He spoke. "Laura is this your husband?"
She turned. "Dr. Anderson, yes this is Fenton. My sons are numbers 6 and 27."
He turned to the field. "Ah the quarterback and a receiver, awesome. My daughter Ginny is a cheerleader. She is standing next to the petite blond and has red hair."
Fenton looked. "A beautiful girl."
"Fenton, I could use your help. There is an inconsistency with my drug supply at the office. I was hoping I could hire you to look into it. You'll have to sign a confidentiality agreement. Laura can help you with the medical jargon."
"What's the inconsistency George?" Laura asked.
"I have an extra dose of Depo Provera and am missing a dose of Novarel."
Laura sucked in her breath. "Well someone really goofed, he'll look into it."
Fenton raised his eyebrows at his wife. He was like a fish out of water. But why was she insisting? He answered. "I'll look into it. Can we come to the office tomorrow when no one is there to get a feel?"
"Absolutely. I'm not on call."
Callie rode home from the game in the limo with her father, the radio was playing classical music. He had stayed at the field to speak to constituents. Callie didn't want to interrupt. Her father was silently stewing.
"Why did you invite Frank to the gathering today?"
Callie looked at her father. "Why do you think? I need his support right now. I asked if he could remember?"
His hand came out of nowhere backhanding her. "Don't back talk to me girl! You need a lesson in manners!"
He crossed over sitting beside her. He took the seat belt and wrapped it around her neck and pulled. Callie started gasping. Her vision started turning gray. She reached into her pocket and clicked her pen twice quickly.
When he released she coughed and gulped up as much air as she could. She didn't dare speak.
"Remember who is in charge little girl."
He backhanded her again. "Answer me when I address you!"
Gasping she answered. "I'm sorry daddy. You're in charge." Her left cheek was screaming and her voice was hoarse.
They pulled into the driveway. "The Hardy's, Linda, and Rick will be here soon. Go put some makeup on and dress appropriately. Cover those bruises or there will be hell to pay. Did you order the centerpieces?"
"Yes."
After the game the Hardy's went to clean up. The team won by ten points and was headed to state. Frank had shared with his father what Callie had told him. If he had told Joe, well he wouldn't be able to hide his anger. They were resting in the den, when an alarm buzz on Fenton's phone stopped them. He quickly pulled it out. "Callie is in trouble."
Joe's eyes widened. Fenton gestured to the car. They all climbed in. "Hold on." Fenton engaged his police light and siren and took off toward Callie's house. "Frank engage the record of Callie's transmission from the locket. Go back five minutes."
Frank found the link. He engaged the speaker phone and listened in horror.
"Why did you invite Frank to the gathering today?"
"Why do you think? I need his support right now. I asked if he could remember?"
Frank winced at the loud SMACK followed by a small sob from Callie. "Don't back talk to me girl! You need a lesson in manners!"
They could hear Callie gasping for breath. They heard the two clicks of a pen. Then Callie started coughing and retching.
"Remember who is in charge little girl."
They heard another SMACK. "Answer me when I address you!"
Gasping she answered. "I'm sorry daddy. You're in charge."
"The Hardy's, Linda, and Rick will be here soon. Go put some makeup on and dress appropriately. Cover those bruises or there will be hell to pay. Did you order the centerpieces?"
"Yes." Callie's voice was barely a whisper.
Joe heard them get out of the car. They could hear Callie stumble along.
Laura Hardy's voice hissed. "That poor child! I'll hang that man by his...grrrr!"
Frank and Joe both instinctively crossed their legs. They knew exactly what their mother was going to say initially. That's when the magnitude of what Mr. Shaw did finally hit Frank. "He could have killed her!"
Laura didn't want to worry Frank even more but she could still have a severe injury to either her spinal cord or her windpipe. Fenton turned off the siren as they approached Callie's neighborhood. He turned off the police light and turned on the police radio to the frequency of Callie's address. He said. "This is a Federal Officer credentials 232881, FBI police liaison, Fenton Hardy. I have a domestic dispute in progress at 46 Bayside Drive, requesting back up, and an ambulance in the area. Possible strangulation injury over."
"Acknowledged Federal Officer. Units 2231 and 2232 respond."
"Unit 2231 acknowledged."
"Unit 2232 acknowledged."
"Dispatch 2230 also enroute."
Fenton nodded at the protocol. "Ten four officers and sergeant. I'm about to engage." He looked at his family. "Wait until I have Mr. Shaw detained."
Fenton knew his wife would not let Frank and Joe out of the car until then. Fenton went and rang the bell. Mr. Shaw opened the door. "Fenton! How…"
Fenton didn't let him say another word. He swung the man around and had the cuffs on him in a blink. "You are being detained, asshole."
"How dare you! This is my property!"
"Actually it's your late wife's property. Where is your daughter?"
"Upstairs getting ready! Release me now!"
"You are being detained for suspicion of domestic violence. The police are responding."
Frank hurried up the walk followed by Laura and Joe. "Where is Callie?" Frank demanded.
"I said she was upstairs getting ready."
Frank without asking for permission ran up the steps toward her bedroom. He knocked. "Callie?"
She opened the door wearing a loose red sweater and jeans. Her left eye was bloodshot and both cheeks looked bruised and swollen. "Frank thank God!" Her voice was raspy.
Frank's eyes went downward and he saw the bruising on her neck and cursed. "That son of a bitch."
"Frank don't leave me."
Frank pulled her into his arms as she cried. "You're safe now."
Laura Hardy had made it upstairs by this point. She took one look at Callie's neck and nodded. "Frank, we need to immobilize her neck at once. Lie down on the floor sweetie."
Frank assumed the position at her head and put his hands on the sides of her head near the back. "We have to hold you still."
Laura in hindsight had grabbed her medical kit. Which included a stethoscope, and a pulse ox. Laura listened to her lungs, then her neck.
"That hurts." Callie whispered.
Laura Hardy called downstairs. "Fenton we need the medics up here NOW!"
