Epilogue
It was wonderful. Everyone always wanted happy endings. They don't always come about, but this time, Pepper thought, one did.
Here they all were in celebration, laughing and playing games, reunited at last. Some sort of elaborate monkey-in-the-middle game was in full swing on the lawn. Currently, Scott, Cassie, and Hope were teamed up against Clint, Lila, and Cooper. Despite the quinjet parked nearby and the varied species mingling, Pepper thought the world was back to normal, if there ever was such a thing.
Peter and Shuri, who had roped T'Challa into playing for their team, were exclaiming about science as they waited their turn to play. Pepper never would have imagined such a life for herself, but as she watched Morgan and Nathaniel act as cheer leaders, supervised by Laura and Tony, she couldn't help but smile.
Pepper made her way over to them. Tony took her hand, the robotic brace he had invented allowing her to move her right hand. His own was utilized a second later when Morgan ran to them and he scooped her up.
"Well, are you having a fun birthday, Maguna?" he asked as they walked over to the dock.
The party that currently sprawled over the house and lawn was a combination birthday party for Morgan and last get together for the assembled heroes before they went their separate ways.
"Yes!" Morgan exclaimed. "And for lunch, we're having cheeseburgers!"
Tony reacted excitedly, as if he didn't already know this. "Really? I love cheeseburgers."
Morgan nodded. "Uncle Happy said you did."
Pepper chuckled, remembering Tony's insistence on a cheeseburger all those many years ago.
Morgan ran off to play again, and Pepper looked out at the lake and back to the house.
"It really is home, just like you said years ago," she said.
Gerald brayed.
"Complete with the pet alpaca."
Tony smiled. "You're the one who completes it."
Pepper smiled back, and they stood, each with an arm around the other: together, as they always would be.
