'Love', it was a powerful thing like in those old fairy tales where love always strong and powerful against any spells or evil. I always believed in that as a child, same with my best friend Sammy short for Samantha she was my best friend in the whole world. I was an orphan, and I never knew my birth parents so having Sammy was a blessing. She showed me life could be amazing, and I just had to focus on the good in life, not the bad.
One day, the landlady who owned the Orphanage and even runs it told me the awful news. It seems Sammy's parents wanted to let me know since I was her only friend. I stood there silent, taking it all in my thoughts racing a mile of a minute until it skidded to a halt finally getting what she meant and I broke down crying while the woman, bless her heart held me comforting me while I cried. I was eight years old when I lost Sammy, so I kept living for her sake I gave hope to others who needed it in their hearts.
When I hit seventeen today some reason I had a feeling my life was going to become even more interesting.
I was brushing my hair then putting my headband on which has a flower on it and a red string in hanging from it, making sure I flatten my dress which is a light blue- my favorite color. Today I was helping Miss. Barnes keep the young children in line when couples come in to adopt since I was close to the age I can't be adopted- which is eighteen, I wanted to help around the Orphanage it's my home and I don't think I'll 'ever' get adopted, who would want a teenager? But I guess I end up being very wrong.
So far five children end up getting adopted, I was happy for them but they cried hugging Miss. Barnes and then me I was their big sister I help them with homework, anything they needed help with. The children who didn't get adopted were downhearted, but I reminded them they'll find a happy family sooner or later, they just have to be patent.
"Okay now children, go to your rooms and get clean up for lunchtime. Today, we are having spaghetti and meatballs~" I said in a sing-song voice, getting excited cheers from the munchkins.
Watching them run upstairs, Miss. Barnes walks beside me patting my back with a wrinkly smile.
"Your such a sweetheart dear. Why don't you organize the children that were adopted to the adopted box please, while I go start cooking lunch."
I nodded smiling "Sure thing, Miss. Barnes."
I walk into her office finding the children that were adopted into the box of all the children that were adopted. When there was a knock on the office door, tilting my head in confusion I walk over opening the door to see a beautiful young woman with short cherry red hair that frames her face, and large brown eyes and light skin, she has such a kind loving smile. The man standing beside her was a tall man with pitch-black, spiky hair, tan skin, and cold, gray eyes but I can see kindness in them.
Smiling at them "Hello, ma'am, sir is there something you need?"
"Oh my! Shintaro, love isn't she precious?" the woman gushed over me.
I sweatdrop, wow this woman sure is bubbly but sweet. Her husband- I believe is her husband? Laugh, wrap his arm around her waist.
"I can see, love. But should we tell this young lady 'why' we came hm?" he smiled at his wife.
"Oh! Is the owner present dear?"
I nodded "yes ma'am, but at the moment she's cooking lunch for the children." I told them to be kind.
"I see...um would it be alright if we told you instead dear?"
"Sure, ma'am."
"Excellent! My husband and I, have been thinking, and since I can't bear any more children after my only daughter, we wanted our daughter to have a sister." She said all giddy like.
I felt bad she couldn't have any more babies but happy she wanted to adopt one of the girls.
"That's wonderful news! Do you want me to bring the girls down here so you can meet them?" I was going to head up the stairs to get the girls, but I was stopped.
"No, please wait." I blink stopping my med-walk after walking past them from the office, I turn around tilting my head to the side confused.
"Yes ma'am?"
"Well...what if we already decided on which child we wanted?"
"Oh, well...just tell me their names then. I know all the children's names." I told them proudly.
"What's your name?" The husband asked me beside his wife.
I look at them confused, but I introduced myself anyway "My name is Sapphire, what's your name ma'am, sir?"
"Awe! Even your name is beautiful! Oh! My name is Serenity Hanson, and this handsome man is my husband, Sebastian Hanson~" She went and hugged his arm like she was back in high school, which was very adorable.
"Haha, now, now Serenity. Don't tell this young girl such lies." I smiled at the man's modesty, and his beautiful wife's bubbly kind of personality.
"Hehe, your too modest love. But to tell you the girl's name we wanted to adopt is; you, Sapphire," My eyes widen in shock. "When I laid my eyes on you just seconds ago, I knew in my heart you were the one." She turns her eyes to her husband, while look at her with a smile nodding at her.
"It's true Sapphire, we didn't know we wanted but when you opened that office door we can see it."
"B-but, I'm seventeen though...I'm almost too old to be adopted. Don't you want the younger girls here?" I stuttered out, still in shock.
Serenity shook her head slowly and walk over to me grabbing my hands in hers smiling.
"We don't mind the age dear, but our daughter Zoey is lonely even if she doesn't show it. We just worry for her, and maybe having a sister she can confide in."
Sebastian walks over placing his hand on his wife's shoulder.
"She's right Sapphire, we don't care about your age we only care about if you're a perfect fit for our family. And I think you already are since my lovely wife gushes over you so much hahaha!" He laughs.
I was flabbergasted, opening, and closing my mouth in shock. I snap out of my shock when I heard Miss. Barnes called my name, seeing her walking over confused.
"O-oh, Miss. Barnes...um." I didn't know how to tell her, cause I was still in shock but not as shock as before they told me, they picked me.
"Oh! You must be the owner!" Serenity let my hands go and walk over to Miss. Barnes.
"Oh, hello. What can I help you two?"
"We like to adopt someone."
"Oh! Then do you want me to bring the children down?"
"No thanks, but the one we want to adopt is; Sapphire." Serenity points out smiling.
I look at Miss. Barnes to see her reaction, and it was probably the same as mine, but she sure recovered fast smiling brightly?
"Oh, that's wonderful news! Aren't you happy Sapphire dear? You finally going to have a family."
I finally realized that, but what about the children? Frowning, feeling sad I guess the woman- Serenity notice it.
"What's wrong sweetie? Do you not want us to adopt you?" She asks gently.
I shook my head smiling at her "No, no. I'm happy, really...but, what about the other children? I know I'll miss the children, and who will take care of them while Mrs. Barnes helps around? She doesn't have anyone to help..."
"Oh my...I'm so sorry Sapphire." Serenity walks over to me, laying her hand on my shoulder to comfort me.
"Sapphire dear, I know you don't want to leave the other children, and me alone. But we'll get by, I'll have one of the older ones to help me out. And to help ease your worry, you can come by to check up on us, no helping though just to visit us." Miss. Barnes told me.
I was excited, I can have a family I always dreamed of having and I can also come to visit my other family any time I want. I look at the married couple, smiling brightly, with tears in the corner of my eyes.
"I-if you still want me...I-I would love to be part of your family." I stuttered out, feeling ready to cry pure joy.
They sure got excited, they hugged me in a group hug. Miss. Barnes shooed me to my room to pack my things, while my 'family' signed my papers of being my parents now. I was packing when one of the younger boys walk into my room I shared by myself, with tears in his eyes while hugging his teddy bear.
"B-big sister?" I zip up my second bag, turn around frowning in worry seeing Zack in tears.
I open my arms smiling sadly, he quickly ran over hugging me tightly begging me not to go. I knew he was eavesdropping, little sneaker.
"Hey, no more tears Zacky." I pulled him away from me, while he sniffled, wiping his snot and tears with his shirt sleeve.
"B-but you'll leave, a-and you'll forget us."
"Hey, would you really think I'll forget my little brothers and little sisters? No way, I'll come to visit anytime you want me, but can you give me a week just to spend with my adopted family? And I promise I'll come to visit everyone, and I'll tell you stories and even your favorite book."
"Peter Pan!" He cheered out suddenly happy when I mentioned his favorite book.
Giggling, I ruffled his black short fluffy hair "I promise, and you know me and promises Zacky."
He nodded, he hugged me one last time and took off running past my family.
I stood up grabbing my two bags only bags, facing my parents. Sebastian rushes to my side grabbing my bags, while Serenity leads me outside, to their car. I look at the building I grew up in, through the car window watching it go away while Serenity drove away to their home. I'll miss them, but knowing I can come back at any time.
'Sammy, do you see? I finally found the family that wants me!' I thought smiling.
