Andromeda remembered the day she found out her sister was dead. She had come downstairs to have breakfast with her family when she was met with a grave look on her husband's face. He stood, handing her the morning Prophet, and reached out to hold her arm as if expecting her to fall. She didn't have to read the article to know what happened, the headline on the front page said it all: 'MALFOY MURDERED IN DEATH EATER ATTACK'. She couldn't even describe what she was feeling when she saw it, but Andromeda was positive that that moment would live in her head forever.
She knew she should have shown up to the manor earlier. She had finally convinced herself to go, but she felt very out of place. Maybe walking around the property for a bit would calm her nerves. She couldn't back out now. She had wanted to come to see her sister's final resting place for herself, say what she needed to say, and finally put an end to this chapter of her life.
Ted wasn't the biggest fan of her decision, but she needed this closure. He was mostly worried that Lucius wouldn't kill her the moment she set foot on the property. Everyone had heard the rumors of him being a death eater, the Tonks' included, yet he hadn't been arrested with the others when the Dark Lord fell. That didn't mean that he wasn't involved with them or even the slightest bit less dangerous, it simply meant he had enough power to keep himself in good graces with the ministry. He had even managed to keep Bellatrix free, which was a miracle all on it's on.
Thinking back to Narcissa, she began to feel guilty for not attending her funeral years ago. Maybe she didn't want to be the outcast again by showing up, just a blood-traitor in a sea of pure-blood or maybe she didn't want to see her baby sister laying in a casket, so stiff and cold. The latter scenario seemed more likely. Seeing Narcissa like that, well, that just wasn't Narcissa. She had been so full of life, always smiling like she didn't have a care in the world. At least, that's what she remembered of her. She hadn't seen her youngest sister in person since she was 17, yet she had a feeling Narcissa had never changed.
Walking around the back of the manor, she had come upon the gardens. Everything looked absolutely breathtaking. She was sure that Narcissa had some hand in the layout of it. Just like her namesake, she had loved flowers and the garden was filled with them.
Making her way down one of the paths leading to the backdoor, she saw a little blonde boy, sitting on his knees under a giant tree. Walking a bit closer, Andromeda noticed that there was an iron fence around the area and a rough cut stone leaning up against the tree. She continued to move closer, trying not to spook the boy as she approached.
When she reached the gate, the boy looked back to see who had come to join him. He gave a small smile and got up to make his way towards her. It was then that Andromeda saw the small bouquet of daisies that the boy was holding.
"Draco!"
Startled by the sudden voice, Andromeda turned her head to see a woman with wild black hair quickly walking towards them from the house. After so many years, she could still pick Bellatrix out in a crowd. The real question is, would she know who she was.
The boy didn't seem to be bothered at all, if anything, he had an ever bigger smile.
"Trixie!"
Bellatrix rushed past her, pushing her out of the way as she made her way through the gate to kneel in front of the boy. Concern clearly written all over her face.
"What are you doing out here," she questioned, looking into the boy's steel grey eyes, rubbing his arms as if trying to keep him calm.
Draco shifted his gaze from his aunt, to the stone, and back to her again as he raised the daisies in his hand so that she could see them, "I picked these flowers for momma. I thought they were pretty and I wanted to give them to her."
Andromeda continued to watch in amazement as Bellatrix gave him a sad smile, "that's very sweet of you, Dragon."
Draco pulled away from her, walking over to the stone and laying the flowers at the base.
He looked back at Bellatrix, giving her a hopeful gaze, "Do you think she likes them?"
"I know she likes them," she assured, while nodding her head.
Suddenly, the young boy's smile fell and he ran to Bellatrix, hiding his face in the front of her robes. Andromeda could just make out the mumblings of "I miss her".
"I miss her too. But you wanna know something? Sometimes I still see her," Bellatrix murmured, as she stroked the boy's back.
Draco pulled back, whispering, "how?"
The older woman smirked and whispered back, "I see her sometimes when I look at you."
He thought about what she had said for a moment before he accepted it and snuggled into her again, "Love you, Trixie."
"I love you too," she replied, holding him tight, "now why don't you go see what your father's doing, hmm?"
It was then that Draco must have remembered that there was another person with them. He pulled away from Bellatrix and looked over at Andromeda, pointing at her, "are you gonna talk to that lady?"
Bellatrix nodded and playfully pushed him towards the house.
Andromeda watched the boy run back towards the manor until he was out of sight.
"He certainly acts like Narcissa," she chuckled.
Turning around to face her sister, she was met with a menacing glare.
"Why are you here, Andromeda," Bellatrix snapped, folding her arms across her chest.
Finally making her way through the gate, Andromeda gestured towards the stone, "I thought it was time that I came to see her"
"Thought it was time? It's been 4 years!"
"I know," andromeda muttered
Bellatrix snarled in response, "that's all you have to say?"
"What did you expect, Bella? I didn't even know if I was allowed to come. I wasn't exactly on speaking terms with either of you, let alone Lucius. I didn't even hear from you after it happened, I had to read about it in the Prophet!"
Bellatrix, growing more angry, strode closer to her, "I expected you to step up and be a sister for once! Narcissa is dead and you couldn't even be bothered to send an owl! And the last time I checked, you were the one who left and cut all communication with us!"
Andromeda's eyes widened as Bellatrix continued, "yeah, Narcissa told me about all the letters she sent you after you ran away with that boy. She never did get a letter back, did she?"
"I didn't want to get her in trouble," she whispered, looking down at the ground.
She could hear Bellatrix begin to clap in front of her, "Sister of the year, ladies and gentleman!"
Andromeda raised her head to glare at her sister, "You weren't the perfect sister either, Bellatrix! I'm still amazed that you're not in prison with your Death Eater friends!"
Bellatrix took a step forward and pushed her, "I'm not a Death Eater!"
She caught herself before she fell back into the ground and stepped up to her sister, reaching for her arm and pulling up the sleeve to reveal her faded dark mark, "really? Cause this says otherwise."
Retching her arm back, Bellatrix muttered, "I'm not a Death Eater anymore. I haven't been for a long time."
Andromeda was extremely confused now. She had never heard about Bellatrix leaving the Dark Lord, she had actually heard the opposite. It was no secret that Bellatrix Lestrange was a favorite amongst the band of pure-bloods.
"What happened," she found herself asking.
Bellatrix sighed deeply, turning to face the stone. Andromeda could now clearly see that it was engraved with the name 'Narcissa Malfoy'.
"I left when she was named. There was some prophecy that a boy born in July, whose parents defied the Dark Lord, would end up being the one to kill him. The Potter's and the Longbottom's both had sons that month. Draco also happened to be born then as well. The Dark Lord told us that Draco wouldn't be a target. He told us while Narcissa hadn't taken the mark, Lucius was a loyal servant and she had never gotten in the way of anything so Draco couldn't be the boy from the prophecy," she explained.
"Harry was supposed to be the main target, so when the Potter's were found, we assumed we would all be going, at least those in the inner circle, but he told Lucius, Rod, and me to go after the Longbottom's and a couple others where to go raid some muggle town to confuse the Aurors. Something about the whole situation just didn't feel right. So instead, we went to the town, but when we got there, there was nothing, no attack, no chaos, just nothing. Lucius immediately went back to the manor and Rod and I followed shortly after, just to make sure everything was okay. By the time we all got there, Narcissa was dead. The whole thing had been a set up to keep us away so that she and Draco would be easier to get to. Severus was meant to be with her, but for some reason he wasn't there either."
Bellatrix paused for a bit and moved to sit next to the headstone, she picked up Draco's flowers before continuing, "we found her in the sitting room, just laying on the floor. Draco was next to her patting her face and calling out for her. Lucius was inconsolable and I—I didn't even want to look at her."
She began to choke up recalling the events of that night. Turning her head to make eye contact with Andromeda, she could tell that Bellatrix was losing control of her emotions.
"How could I look at her like that?"
Without thinking, Andromeda rushed to her, hugging her from behind as she began to sob.
"I should have known. I should have been there. I'm the big sister, it was my job to protect her," Bellatrix continued to lament.
Andromeda just continued to hold her as she got it all out. It was clear that Bella had had this bottled up since it happened. She tried to think of something to say to calm her, but in reality, how could she? She was in the same boat. Narcissa had been her little sister too. There was a strong urge to go down a rabbit hole of "what if's", but would that do her any good? There was no going back, the events of that night couldn't be undone. Their sister was dead, but they still had each other, surely that still meant something.
"You can't keep blaming yourself for this, Bella. You'll drive yourself insane thinking about what could have been done," she whispered to her, "she knew you loved her and I'm sure she would still think the world of you. Remember when we were little, she had always wanted to be just like you. She even tried to put mud in her hair that one time to get it to look dark like yours?"
Bellatrix began to laugh at the memory, "then when she got her wand, she tried a color changing spell. Mother was so furious when she found out. It took them forever to change her hair back."
They both sat there laughing and reminiscing about their childhood for a while. It felt good to forget about everything and go back to a time when they were happy and together. Andromeda knew in her heart that it would never be like that again. They would never be whole again without Narcissa, but maybe her and Bella could learn to navigate this new world together.
