During the mission to find Hanabi Hyuuga, Naruto confessed his love to Hinata only for the Hyuuga to reject him and go with Toneri. He attempted to pursue only to be knocked away, nearly killing him.
It didn't help that Shikamaru and Sakura would insult his intelligence and density and berate him for it, making his blood boil. He bottled it up inside and only took it out on opponents.
He found Toneri and after freeing Hinata not because he is doing it for her but because he wanted her out of the way while he battled the Otsutsuki.
He held nothing back. He beat Toneri to a fraction of an inch of his life, unheeding of Hinata's pleas for him to stop. When she told him that Toneri has her sister's eyes, he obliged her by brutally ripping the Byakugan eyeballs out of Toneri's sockets in a way that would make Madara Uchiha proud then handed them to a stunned Sakura before walking away.
"Did you hear me Naruto-kun?"
"Don't call me Naruto-kun.." Naruto said coldly to Hinata.
"S..sorry, Naruto." Hinata stuttered. The trip back to the village had been quiet and dark and they didn't bother to ask Sai for transport back home. "But did you hear me though? Shikamaru just said that you can't afford to be distracted since it's dark and you're making a lot of noise with your footsteps."
Naruto's anger began bobbling up to the surface as he snarled. "You know what Hinata? I already fought in a war, against a goddess, Sasuke, and a bunch of puppets and their master just to get to you! So whatever comes my way, I can handle ok?!"
"What on earth is wrong with you?! Ever since we left the moon, you've shown nothing but anger against me!" Hinata yelled in frustration.
The rage finally came full burst as Naruto directed all of it at her, face transformed into complete anger. "What's wrong with me?! How about what's wrong with you?! I told you my feelings towards you after I realized them and you threw it at my face! Not only did you go with Toneri willingly but you failed badly in your little stealth game! You leave me alone heartbroken and nearly dead while you go and do your thing and you're asking what's wrong with me?! I HATE YOU!"
Shikamaru stepped in as an attempt to stop the argument. "Okay, Naruto that's enough!"
As soon as he grabbed Naruto's arm, the man turned around and punched him hard in the side of his jaw with enough chakra applied into the force of that punch to send him flying to a tree, knocking him out.
"Naruto, what are you-" Sakura tried to say but flinched and backed off when Naruto made a rather intimidating demonic and feral growl to her. Sai just stayed silent and ran to an unconscious Shikamaru.
There was a long silence between Naruto and Hinata. No sounds uttered, even the simple crickets and winds of the forest weren't heard at all. A word unsaid as the blonde male and the blue haired female stared at each other, one whose face twisted with rage and the other has her face filled with tears of guilt.
Hinata had the courage to walk to Naruto and gently and slowly hug him. "Naruto, I'm so..so sorry...I didn't think things would turn out bad for you the way they did..I..I'm so..so sorry Naruto-kun.." Hinata sadly said, letting her tears wet his jacket.
Naruto let Hinata hug him for a while then he gently pushed her away. "It's alright Hinata. Let's just go home..." Naruto grabbed one of Hinata's hands and gave her back her damaged scarf before moving on.
Sai managed to wake Shikamaru up and carried him by the shoulder, not telling him that Naruto punched him unconscious knowing that he was currently pissed off. Sakura just bit her lips and followed Naruto.
As Hinata watched Naruto walk somberly in front of her, she realized that things would never be the same between them ever again. She made a mental note to discuss this issue with Naruto once he has rested from the trip.
Unfortunately, that conversation wouldn't happen for a very long time.
