"So do you, like, only want to eat fish and drink milk all of the time?" Those were the first words Shion heard from the strawberry blonde she was sparring. Just like the human she would come to know, the question was innocent. To the point. And most importantly...incredibly, incredibly rude.
"Wow," came Shion's immediate reply, followed by the roll of her head towards the human girl, "Coming from someone who looks like their whole diet is white bread and semen, that's a bold question."
She had known from that day on that they were meant to be in each other's lives.
Lisandre had been the same age as Shion - about 11 years old - at the time of their meeting. Where Shion was lithe and small, Lisandre was formed and tall. That was why they had been partnered up to spar that day under the watchful eyes of elder Assassin sisters - one must always be able to fight against their opposite. If there was a weakness, it should be snuffed out. Perhaps it was for that reason the Fates had brought the two together. Perhaps it was the powers that neither of them were able to use to anyone's liking that pulled at them, like magnets to honed metal. Or perhaps it was merely a coincidence that the two had ever met.
Whatever brought the two together didn't matter. What mattered was that the girl-turning-woman named Lisandre was growing into her Amazonian features with endless grace. It wasn't something that was lost on Shion. In fact, Shion was hyper-aware. Puberty hit hard for those of her race, and she was right in the thick of it when the two had met.
Now that she was thinking on it, perhaps it was simply her raging hormones that had brought them together. It was definitely more likely than everything else.
Rational thoughts were for the logical, though, and Shion was not a fan of that at that. She was a fan of Lisandre, however, and she had decided to make the best of that infatuation. The sparring match had been the spark that lit a forest fire in her mind: Whatever she needed to do, she would call Lisandre her lover. That was what she was supposed to do anyway, wasn't it? She lived on an island where women took each other for mates all of the time. It was all Shion really knew was normal for a relationship. If there was one thing Shion wanted more than to belong with her peers was to feel loved by someone as handsome as this rude human girl.
Lisandre hadn't taken the animal woman's rebuttal very well, it turned out - the words from Shion's mouth had earned her a dislocated jaw and a fractured hip. Lisandre hadn't come away scott-free either, much to the blonde's delight. The two shared a few hours together in the healing house, beds facing each other in what was (or, at least, what Shion was sure the Matrons would think was) tense competition. The two locked eyes frequently as they healed themselves. Her mouth may have been still, but Shion's eyes were throwing soliloquies at her fighting partner.
Where have you been for my whole childhood? I've heard rumors about you. They sound a lot like the ones about me. You know, how our supernatural abilities are horrible. Do you pretend to be fine when the lights are off, even when you hear people saying mean things about your abilities too? I always try not to, but I can't help it sometimes. I mean, I don't remember my parents ever saying that I even had powers! But they were nice. The Matrons are ok, I guess, but none of them will ever beat my Mom and Dad. Do you remember what happened to your parents? I bet they loved you, you're so cute!
All of the girls and women on the isle of Selene were beautiful. Prey were more likely to let their guard down around a beautiful woman, after all. But to Shion, Lisandre was prettier than even Alaxia, the Matriarch of Selene.
On the way out the two brushed shoulders. Shion blushed. And if she wasn't hallucinating (Fates be praised if she wasn't), Lisandre blushed too.
