Chapter 3 : "Do I have to be a hero?"

A purple headed girl collapsed to the ground on her knees. She coughed out blood as her vision blurred. She clutched her right arm which was now no more than a stump at her elbow. Tears were constantly wetting her cheeks as her teeth were clenched and her eyes fighting hard to stay awake. The girl was no more than seven years old. It was winter and her shaky breaths could be seen as she struggled to breath. The snow beneath her was red. She was in an open field completely surrounded by trees. No one could hear her scream and yet she still didn't dare to make a sound in fear of what her father would do if she woke her younger siblings or worse yet her mother. And this was her training, so she was somewhat used to pain. Just not this much. She shivered from not just the cold but the blood loss.

Her father finally spoke " Come on heal yourself! Aren't you almost dead yet or do I need to get rid of a leg too?"

The girl shook her head and began to stand up. Her blue eyes staring at her arm by her father's feet. "No, I just need a sec" She coughed out.

"Well hurry it up It's cold." Her father complained. A dim white glow covered her body as she felt more at peace. She regrew her arm and her wounds were healed and her body no longer freezing to death. She held her breath as she watched her blood and arm disintegrate and looked up at her father.

Her father nodded " Morning training is done." he announced. She sighed in relief watching her father walking back towards the house. The girl takes a deep breath and looks up at the pale starry sky. It was about 4 am when she was dragged outside for morning training. She was used to this. She has been training since she got her quirk. This has become her new normal. And she's excepted it. She used to hate it but whenever she feels as though she can't heal anymore,

Whenever she doesn't want to get out of bed,

Whenever she sees her bloodied body in her reflection,

Whenever she wishes to just disappear,

She remembers the look on her mother's face. How her pale almost dead like complexion is given life once more. Her red eyes regained their lively gleam and resembled a beautiful ruby gem. Her smile with only one dimple and the look of relief on her fathers' face. And how he would place his hand on her head and spout apologizes and thank you's. And the cycle will repeat each month. And it did. For what felt like forever.

Sakura Hideyoshi woke up in a sweat. Her dream still fresh in her mind. She didn't move there for a second. It was still dark out and she hoped it wasn't 2 am or something, because she wouldn't be able to sleep after one of her nightmares. She grabbed her phone from the bedside table and checked the time. It was 5 am, she woke up 2 hours before her alarm.

Sakura was in her pink pajamas. Her baby blue comforter wrapped her tightly. She did not want to get up, but couldn't lay in bed because she would end up thinking. So, she shoved the covers off and moved to her bathroom. She splashes cold water on her face and stares at her reflection afterwards. Her long, lavender hair showed clear signs of bed head. Her electric baby blue eyes were no longer as sleepy looking. She was awake. She was hungry.

Sakura pulls her hair into a messy bun and goes to the kitchen to fill her stomach. She fills he coffee maker with water and then has a 15 second debate on which coffee she should make. French roast, or Hazelnut. Deciding to have Hazelnut tomorrow she makes uses the French roast. She toasts some bread and fries an egg. She eats while listening to her favorite singers' newest song. She then preps some French toast batter for her siblings leaving a note to wish them good morning.

She then takes a nice hot shower. She dries her hair and brushes the mess out to lay nice and flat. She changes into her uniform, a black button up long-sleeved shirt, a white pleated skirt with a black accent line, and a white polyester vest with the school insignia in golden thread. Paired with a bright red tie and black stockings. She braids the left side of her hair and ties it up with a red satin ribbon. (think Sakura from Fate stay night UBW). And clips a red armband labeled student council president in black kanji.

Checking the time, she sees it's been a solid hour, so she was really ahead of her normal schedule. She decided to go to school extra early today to finish all the student council work so she won't have to stay after school, which means she might get in and out of work earlier than usual.

And so, she went to school. Waving and smiling at the early rising neighbors, the police officers still in their late-night shifts, and the dogs from their yards. When she reached school, she immediately cleaned the classroom up and then the student council room. She printed the handouts while starting the coffee maker in the teachers' lounge, and then proceeded to replace the flowers at the back of the class. She paused at the photo next to it and took a moment to pray. She then placed the handouts on each student's desk and then grabbed a clipboard and write up sheet and made her way to the front entrance to check for uniforms when more students arrive. On her way she paused in the empty halls and called her friend to see if she might grace the school with her presence.

No answer. 'That's fine' she thinks. Sakura continues her duties with a smile and keeps that smile her whole day. She greets her fellow classmate's good morning and only must chastise a few first years and a troublesome second year about their uniforms. And that one third year convinced they're a fallen angel. That made her eyebrow twitch, but she persevered and kept smiling.

Before the first class she tried calling her friend one last time. Straight to her obnoxious voice mail. Sakura grimaces internally. But keeps up her smile and silenced her phone for class. They had orientation and she gave her commemorative speech as top student and the student council welcoming speech along with the other members. After when they returned to class, she became the class rep for a third year in a row and made a few acquaintances in each class. During break she called her friend another two times and then again at lunch before eating with the student council to discuss the future events that we wish to have. By the end of the final class there's nothing left to do so she packs up says her goodbyes and makes her way to the train station to head to her part-time job. On her way she smiles and waves to her locals and says good afternoon to the police officers there for the day shift, and the school children coming home and the middle schoolers walking around. Till she makes it to the hospital for this week.

She smiles and waves at the nurses and doctors. The receptionist stands and greets her with a bow and she's immediately rushed to change and then to a patients' room. The man is at deaths door. Only a few minuets left to bring him back. His left leg gone and his are and a myriad of lacerations on his harm and one huge gash on his stomach. He has a few hairline fractures on his ribs and his bandages are leaking blood from the way he's thrashing about. Sakura quickly removes her glove and places her hand gently on the man's chest. And in a wave of light purple his leg regrows, his cuts close and his rib is healed, and he stops thrashing about for life. Apparently, there was a villain attack with a very troublesome quirk. A metal tentacle quirk. Troublesome she thinks. She spends the next few hours healing those at death door. And when she can catch her break, she calls her friend one last time. If she didn't respond to any of her previous calls, it's safe to assume she's either dead, forgot to charge her phone (again), or is sleeping. Sakura quickly shakes her head to forget the death option and taps her most recent calls. Surely Ako was up by now and good finally grace her with her pleasant voice.

And so, the phone…
