It was a dismal night, as a human Kat walked through the New Orleans streets. After having left Mystic Falls after Damon had broken his promise to her, she'd decided to chance her luck here in New Orleans. She knew it would've been safer to call Elijah in case something happened to her on her way to their New Orleans home, but she hadn't. She'd decided to just surprise him and whichever other siblings were home at the time. She hated that she needed to be here, but she knew it was her only protection. She had to ask one of the Originals for help, because she was human. Although she'd found out that Silas had been taken down at last on her way here, there were many other dangers for her. Right now, Klaus killing her would be the best thing that ever happened to her if it came down to that. She'd rather run into Klaus or face Elijah, because she knew there was someone else here she had to fear. She knew that Marcel would be after her as soon as he knew she was back in this city that he called his. She knew it wasn't actually his, though. It belonged to the Mikaelsons. They'd built the city themselves. Not Marcel. Marcel had only repaired it after Mikael had burned it to the ground in the 1900's. She'd done some things that Marcel hadn't been happy about. She was sure if he knew she was here, he'd probably torture her and then kill her, despite his rule for not killing humans. He wasn't the only danger to her, though. So were all the nightwalkers. She was safe from them when it was daylight, but not when it was dark. All of the enemies she knew she had in this city made her nervous to be outside by herself, which made her walk as fast as she could briskly, heading for Marcel's old plantation home. Since Marcel had taken over the Mikaelson compound, she was sure the Mikaelsons were staying at the plantation. It was the only other option they had without having to compel anyone to give up a home to them.
The newly turned back human had been walking for about half an hour or so, but stopped, sensing that she was being watched. Then, when she looked around, she saw someone she didn't recognize. She wasn't a vampire though, so she assumed she was probably a witch. And she was proven right, because as soon as she saw her, she began to have a magical migraine from her. Then she was taken by some others.
About twenty minutes later, a couple witches that had grabbed her, let her go, which made her land on the ground inside a mausoleum. Then she heard a familiar voice. She was an old friend. They'd helped one another time and time again in times that it was needed the most.
"I told you to bring her. Not attack her. As Jane-Anne confirmed, she's not a vampire anymore. No need to use magic against her."
"Well, forgive us if we don't share your full-hearted trust. You brought Originals to town, after all," the witch that had given her a migraine replied to her friend.
"Go. Get out of my sight. You disrespect my sister and an old friend," she replied, in which the three that had brought Kat obeyed, going into another room of the mausoleum. Then the witch walked over and knelt by her friend. "Long time no see, Katherine. I heard you got yourself into a terrible ordeal. Then you came here. We have some things we need to talk about. Come on." Then the witch offered a hand to help her up, in which Kat took, though she normally didn't let others help her that weren't Elijah.
Kat got to her feet and finally looked at her old friend.
"You could've called instead of abducting me out of nowhere, you know, Sophie."
"Sorry about that, but I didn't want you to end up being dinner or captured by Marcel. Besides, we need your help. You know Marcel's hold on witches. My sister, as you know, brought Klaus and Elijah here with your help. I know Klaus would never do anything for you unless he actually has to just to please Elijah, but you need to convince them both to help us take care of Marcel. We can't just go and kill Marcel. If we do that, we risk a whole army of vampires slaughtering us all."
"I only left that letter for Klaus to get him back here for my own purpose. I wanted to be free of Klaus. I also was hoping that Elijah would follow me instead of Klaus this time. I was wrong, though. Unless I'm in true danger, Elijah will never choose me over Klaus. You know, I'd do anything for you, though. How do you want this to happen? I was on my way to the plantation house anyway. I was going to surprise Elijah and ask him for his protection."
"We have our plan how we will take down Marcel, but there are rules. He has something that we need. The Harvest was never completed, because Marcel stopped it from happening. There's a Harvest witch under Marcel's thumb. That's how he knows when we do magic. You know her. You met her before The Harvest started."
"Davina Claire," Katherine said in memory. Kids had always been her weakness. She'd had a special bond with Davina, though. She just hoped that Davina would remember her.
"We're going to call both of the Mikaelsons here. Then you can explain to them both what needs to happen. If they don't listen, friends or not, I'm going to have to make you a liability of some sorts," Sophie replied to her. She wouldn't keep anything from her. It wasn't something that either of them ever did to each other.
"Do it. You may not get an answer tonight, though. Especially, if Klaus thinks he's being threatened. It may take more time to convince Klaus. In which case, you'll have to let me go and let Elijah take me with him. He'll keep me safe. It'll also give time for Klaus and I to have a one-on-one about going along with what your plans are," she replied.
"Very well then," Sophie said, agreeing with Katherine.
When Klaus and Elijah entered the mausoleum after Sophie invited them into the cemetery, considering it was on sacred ground, making it so that vampires needed an invitation into the cemetery, Sophie stood with a few witches.
"Why have you brought us here?" Elijah asked of Sophie.
"I have a proposition. You both know Marcel has solid feet in this city, but it's not his city. It's rightfully yours. He's killing witches for doing magic, not caring about the cost. Marcel needs to be dealt with," she told them both.
"Then we'll deal with him," Elijah replied.
"I need to know that both of you are onboard. You may not be aware of this, but someone else has come to town. If Marcel knows that she's here and vulnerable, he'll do anything to get his revenge for what she did to some of his vampires. She tried proving a point. You both know have known her for a long time, so you know that sometimes she goes too far to prove a point. She tried to stop him from having control over us witches, but it didn't work, so she fled before he could get his revenge," Sophie informed them.
"Pray tell, who are you talking about?" Klaus questioned, having known very few that had meaning to him.
At that moment, there was movement that came from a mausoleum room. Then Katherine came out, standing against a rock wall, not too far behind where Sophie stood.
"Lies!" Klaus immediately yelled, not wanting to believe any of this. He didn't like being manipulated or used, much less like being on the same side as Katerina.
"Something's different," Elijah stated, looking at Katerina. Then he told his brother, "I implore you, hear her out."
Sophie informed them, "This needs to be kept underwraps, but she's human now. When Jane-Anne sensed who was coming to town soon, she did a spell to confirm. When she did, she found out what happened. Someone forced the cure for vampirism down her throat. Katherine confirmed it. Silas has been taken care of in Mystic Falls, but here is far worst for her, as you know. If Marcel gets a hold of her, he's going to seek his revenge on her. She can take care of herself as a vampire, but everyone knows that humans don't last long in a city like this."
"Then she'll be protected. I'll protect her," Elijah replied, not hesitating. Whether they were together or not, he wasn't going to let anything happen to Katerina. Sadly though, she was caught in a mess between supernatural things as she had been the first time she'd been human. He would always save her when she needed it, though.
"Well, I can't guarantee the same thing," Klaus replied. He was about to speed towards the new human, but Elijah put an arm in front of him, stopping him.
"Don't even think about it, Niklaus. She's no harm to anyone anymore, so how about you concentrate your demons on someone else," he told Klaus, a hint of a threat in his voice.
Klaus gave a growl.
"Fine. We'll take care of Marcel and keep him from getting to Katerina."
"I have your word on that?" Sophie asked the hybrid.
"Fine. I promise that we'll help you get rid of Marcel. Katerina will be safe from him, too," Klaus grudgingly replied. He was more than willing to take down Marcel, but he hated that he had to give his word that Katerina would be safe.
"Great. Then I won't have to do anything that I don't wish to do. We can start tomorrow with planning. There are rules, as Katherine very well knows. She'll fill you in on the details. You're free to take her home with you, though," Sophie replied, happy at the outcome.
Klaus was happy that they were finished, so he was the first to leave.
Elijah came over to where Katerina still was, offering a hand to help her. He could always tell when she needed assistance, even when she didn't ask for it.
The former vampiress took his hand, letting him help her. Those witches had been not so nice when they'd brought her to Sophie, so her head still hurt from the migraine. And she hadn't said anything, but the last time she'd eaten was the night that Damon had almost handed her over to Silas, so she didn't have her full strength. She was just glad that Silas was out of the picture, Elijah would protect her, and Klaus would help protect her. Klaus had had to give his word, which meant that whether he wanted to or not, Klaus had to protect her if she needed it.
As they entered the plantation house Marcel had grown up in that the Mikaelsons were staying at, Elijah kept an arm around her. The whole trip there had been quiet, because there wasn't anything to say until they could all have a decent conversation. She was happy about that though, because silence was better for her aching head.
As soon as they were all in the parlor room, Elijah helped her sit down on the couch. Then, after Klaus had gotten himself a shot glass of Bourbon, Elijah gave Katerina one, which she happily took. Then she took a sip, before speaking, despite the pain she was currently feeling.
"There's something you both need to know that will help with this war against Marcel. He has a witch on the inside. He saved her from what's called The Harvest. Davina Claire. I had a connection with her when she was younger, before The Harvest. Since all the other Harvest girls are dead, their magic went into Davina, which means she's very powerful with or without control. Sophie tells me that Davina is the reason Marcel knows when witches are doing magic. Davina is the key to giving the witches their freedom back," Kat told them.
"Pray tell, Katerina, why do you care so much about witches? You never have before as far as I've seen," Klaus wanted to know.
"You didn't see me with some witches. First off, I don't threaten unless I need to unlike you. Second off, I don't hurt children usually. If Marcel continues on this path and the witches continue using magic against Marcel's rules though, one of the few friends I truly have could end up being one of those dead witches. Sophie. And like you, I protect my friends, Klaus."
"Is there anything else I should know?" Klaus asked, though he wanted to demand it. She just didn't seem in the condition for him to be demanding things, though.
"Just that Marcel's weakness is children. He doesn't like kids to be hurt. If we can find Davina though, I can probably convince her to trust me like she did when she was younger. Then maybe I can convince her to stay with us for a while. We can convince her that Marcel has been lying to her, which should make her determined enough to want to stand against Marcel. It'll minimize the casualties," she replied.
"I'll meet with the witches tomorrow then. We'll figure something out," Klaus told her, before leaving the room to go outside, needing some time by himself.
Kat finished almost her entire glass, before resting the shot glass against her left temple, hoping something cold would help her pain go away.
Elijah approached her, knowing now that something was definitely wrong.
"What happened, Katerina?" he had to know, as he approached.
"A few of the witches that were sent to fetch me didn't exactly believe Sophie or her sister that I'm human, so they treated me like a vampire when they went to fetch me. I was on my way here to ask for protection, when I was ambushed with a magical migraine. I'm sure I'll be okay. I just don't heal from magical attacks like I used to, so it's going to take a while."
Elijah knelt in front of her.
"There's something else too, isn't there?" he asked.
"There is. The last time I ate was a couple nights ago before Silas came after me for the cure. I was too busy finding my way to this city. Plus, I'm human now. I relied on my abilities as a vampire, so I don't have any money," she admitted. She hated admitting being weak and helpless as a human, but she knew she could show Elijah her full self. He normally didn't judge her. She knew he definitely wouldn't judge her now.
Elijah sat next to her on the couch.
"I'll get you what you need," he told her, realizing why she had seemed like something was wrong since he'd seen her in the mausoleum. She was weak from not being able to take care of herself. He could sense her pain too, but he didn't dwell on it. Instead, he took her now empty shot glass, setting it down. He then put a hand on her upper arm to help her if she needed it. "Come. I'll help you to bed. I have someone I can call to help you. In the meantime, I'll get you something to eat while you rest."
She got to her feet, allowing him to help her. She felt like she was losing her strength. It almost felt to her like a weakening spell. She'd been around humans enough to know that she shouldn't be feeling as weak as she was. Then, when she was on her feet, everything blurred. She then felt him catch her, when she didn't feel like she had much strength to stand.
"Katerina?" he called, clearly worried, an arm around her to keep her on her feet. He knew this wasn't something human-related, though. It had to be a witch. "Katerina," he then stated after a moment, now knelt with her in his arms, supporting her, as she began to start to go under. He didn't know if that was good for her though, considering the magical migraine she'd gotten. He didn't know if a magical migraine could truly damage a human or not.
"What happened?" he heard Klaus say, as he heard him briskly come back into the parlor.
Elijah looked at him.
"This doesn't seem to be something related to her being human. At first, she was just in pain from a few witches Sophie sent to fetch her. They didn't believe Sophie that she's human now, so they gave her a migraine before taking her to her. She was weak from having to get here on her own too, but I think this is something else. It's time for me to have a little chat with a few witches. I'll call Rebekah here to deal with her human needs. Can I trust you?"
After hearing everything, Klaus was inwardly unhappy. Sure, he despised Katerina, but he still had some code. He wouldn't let a witch live if said witch was or had hurt her. He felt as though he was the only one that was allowed to do her any harm.
"Of course, you can. I'll look after Katerina."
Klaus took Elijah's place. Then Elijah was gone. Then Klaus looked at her.
"Stay with me, Katerina." Then, as he gently got to his feet with her in his arms, he added, "I've gotcha, Katerina, luv." He then blurred upstairs, before laying her gently down on Elijah's bed. Then he sat on her bedside, watching her, as everything went black for her. He knew she was still alive, but whatever spell was done to her, she was pale and looked quite weak. He could only watch her and listen. And as he listened, he wished there was something he could do for her. He hoped Rebekah would get here soon. "Sweetheart, you need to hang on for us. We'll do everything we can," he added, resting a hand on the left side of her face, being gentle for once. "No matter what happens, don't you dare leave us. You know what that'll do to Elijah. I need you to fight, Katerina. I'm not going to let you die. No one but me is allowed to hurt you. When we find out who did this, rest assured, they won't live to strike again."
A few hours later, despite hating Katherine for being able to escape Klaus time and time again, Rebekah arrived to help keep the now human Katherine alive, bringing some medical supplies with her, knowing she was going to have to play doctor.
Klaus was still seated on the human's bedside, listening to make sure she stayed alive, when he heard Rebekah arrive downstairs. And as he heard her arrive, he knew it was just in time. He could hear her breathing starting to slow, as well as see her pulse slowing.
"You're not going anywhere, luv. Fight it, Katerina. Keep breathing, sweetheart. You didn't survive this long to die now."
After Rebekah got her hooked up to stuff, she examined the doppelganger. The breathing mask was helping, but her pulse was still slow. She feared too, her not being awake wasn't good. As Elijah explained, she'd gotten a witch migraine. If it was bad enough, it could've seriously done her damage as a human. She could care less, but she knew both of her siblings didn't want anything to happen to her. So, whether she wanted to or not, she stayed there, as Klaus stood against a wall by the open threshold to the room.
"What's the verdict, Little Sister?" Klaus finally asked her.
She looked at him, seated on the human's bedside.
"I can't tell you if she's going to be okay, but she'll live for now. If you ask me, Elijah better hurry up and find whoever did this," she replied to him.
Sophie was finishing up at the bar, which was closing, no customers around, when she saw Elijah appear, approaching her.
"What do you want?" she asked, knowing an Original coming to a witch meant that something was wrong.
"I need to know who you sent to fetch Katerina."
"Why? What's wrong?" she questioned, afraid that something very bad had happened to her, but she didn't want to throw any witches under the bus without a good reason behind it.
"Because I need to know which witch put a spell on her. One of them hurt her when you sent them to fetch her. If it's the same witch, I need to have a conversation with that witch. If it's not, I need to find the witch that used a spell on her. Preferably, before Marcel finds the witch and kills her," he informed her.
"Since it's Katherine, I'll give their names away. I sent three of them. I lectured them about not treating her with respect, but there's not much I can do. Clementine, Strega, and Jasmine."
"Thank you for your cooperation," he replied to her, before leaving.
After he'd had a conversation with the three witches, he was able to find out what Clementine had done to his Katerina. He was angry, but he didn't harm her. He'd let Marcel deal with her, instead. She'd get what was coming to her soon enough.
Once Elijah informed them all, Sophie found a way to reverse it without using real magic, not wanting Marcel to have her killed for using magic.
When Katherine woke up, she was in Elijah's bed with him seated on her bedside. She could see that he was glad that she was awake, which meant that whatever a witch had done, someone had reversed it or stopped it.
She gave a smile and sat up in bed.
"I assume I have you to thank, so thanks," she said.
"Well, I did have a conversation with a few witches, and I found out what the witch did, but she'll get what's coming to her when Marcel gets a hold of her. You thank Rebekah for keeping you alive. You can also thank Klaus for watching over you while I was gone," he replied.
"Well, thanks to all of you then," she replied. "Now that that's settled, I think I'm going to get something to eat. Then I'm going to go to bed. It's been a long night. It's also been a long summer," she replied.
He got up and helped her up, as she got to her feet.
"Help yourself, Katerina."
He watched, as she left the room.
Meanwhile, Marcel had caught up with Clementine and put on a show, much like he had with Jane-Anne recently. Then he killed her for using magic. Considering he'd found out a little information though, he now knew that he had someone to track down.
After Katherine had eaten some human food in the kitchen that Elijah had gotten for her, she went to bed in a guest bedroom, glad not to have any other threats tonight. She knew more threats would come soon, though. Klaus was starting a war with Marcel. That meant enemies and casualties.
