After a while of Davina living at the compound, things started to turn terrible for Davina. The power that she'd had from all the dead Harvest girls was presenting itself. First, the compound shook. Then she began coughing up black dirt. Then she began to feel weak at one point.
Everyone was in the living room at the compound, talking about what was happening.
"This is madness. How can a 16-year-old girl shake the entire French Quarter?" Klaus inquired.
"I don't know. Maybe because she has the magic from three Harvest girls that never resurrected, because your so-called friend stopped The Harvest," Katherine said.
"Yes, well, the point is in her present state, she's useless as a tool against the witches," Klaus replied to his former doppelganger.
"She's not a tool, Klaus. She's a scared teenager that doesn't know what's happening to her," Kat reminded him.
"Something's wrong with her," Klaus stated.
"She has too much power that she cannot control. This much we already knew. But why is it manifesting itself in such an aggressive manner?" Elijah wanted to know.
"It's presenting itself like this, because these are signs that we need to do something. The Harvest was working, according to Sophie, until Marcel interrupted it. The magic was supposed to flow through Davina and back into the earth," Katherine explained.
"You seem to know more about this than the rest of us, so tell us. What the bloody hell is a Harvest?" Rebekah wanted to know.
"It's a tradition passed down through many generations. You've never heard of it, because a lot of people always thought of it as a myth. Kind of like folklore of werewolves to normal people that don't know they actually exist. Sophie didn't even believe until she saw it firsthand. If Sophie can become a believer in it, anyone can. I know you all have issues trusting witches, but Sophie wouldn't lie about The Harvest. She's never lied to me before. She wouldn't start now. I'd never put a child in danger purposely, but the sacrifice has to happen. We've seen the Earth sign. The other signs will be Wind and Fire. If she isn't sacrificed, as much as I hate this, vampires will be the only ones left to argue. We need to agree though, and I have to talk to Davina about it. She'll understand, because it'll be coming from me."
"Since when do you know so much about magic?" Rebekah wanted to know.
"Sophie and I have been close for years. We've shared a lot about our lives with one another. One reason why she already knew at least two of you when you arrived here. We've never lied to each other. That, and there's something none of you ever knew about me. I'm descended from Travelers, though my father stopped his practice when he married my mother. And, well, we have a little something common with our fathers. I never learned the Traveler ways, but I always knew that I was descended from them. The only thing I know are the little things I read about. Sometimes he'd leave some of his books lying around when I was little," she explained. Then she told them, "I'm going to go talk to Davina."
Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah all watched her leave to go talk to the young witch. She was right. None of them had known that part of her. Klaus and Elijah had only known about the doppelganger part. Rebekah only knew about the history between Katherine and her two older brothers.
*Flashback- 1479*
It was dark outside, but it wasn't quite Katerina's bedtime yet. She was only six years old, so she was curious, seeing that her father had left out a few books. Her father had never said that she couldn't touch his books so, being curious at six years old, she sat in his chair that was at his table. Then she began to read. That's when she learned that the books were about magic and spells.
"Katerina, come to bed," she heard after a while of reading his books the best of her ability at that time.
"Yes, mama," she called back to her, before getting out of the chair and heading for her room.
*Present*
Davina was still in bed, when Katherine came in, closing the door behind herself, and sat on Davina's bedside.
"I have something I need to tell you, Davina."
Davina slowly sat up in bed, which Katherine helped her do, knowing she was weak because of what was happening to her.
"What is it? Do you know what's wrong with me?"
"I wouldn't say anything is wrong with you. However, all that magic that's been inside of you these several months is eating away at you. It's pretty much burning away inside of you. And it's presenting itself through the different elements. The last sign will be fire. Sadly, there's nothing we can do that will help you. You were saved from the Harvest, but I think Marcel made a mistake. He only prolonged what eventually would need to happen. I need you to believe in the Harvest. I need you to be brave for me. I believe that you'll come back, but you need to believe, too. Can you do that?" she replied, talking like a friend and a mother at the same time, making sure that she understood what she had to do.
Davina realized what was happening when she told her all of that. She knew she had to be brave, so she believe she could be as long as Katherine believed.
"I can do it. I'm sure of it," Davina replied.
"Great. I know Marcel will fight with us over this, but there's nothing anyone can do. I wish there was another way," she replied. "It has to be done tonight, but between now and tonight, I'm here if you need me. And I'll be here when you come back. Unlike most people, I won't abandon you."
About ten minutes later, Katherine was back downstairs with the others.
"Davina understands and has agreed to it if none of you were listening. This has to be done tonight. Does anyone know of someone recently dead that's a witch that hasn't been consecrated?" she told them, before asking them that. She was hoping that they wouldn't say what she thought they would. Anyone that knew their family, knew there was only one dead Original witch. Katherine, however, knew there was a living one that was a sibling, as well as a living one that was their aunt. She was just keeping it a secret, knowing that neither of them were awake yet.
"There's only one person I can think of," Elijah stated. He knew he didn't have to say who, though. Everyone in the room knew who he was referring to.
"It's taken one thousand years, but you've finally gone mad. Our own mother?" Rebekah protested.
"Yes, our beloved mother, who Niklaus has affectionately placed in a coffin in his basement."
"Well, she did try to kill us all," Klaus reminded him.
"Well, I say we put her to use and put her to rest once and for all. Now, if we bury our mother on land owned by one of her descendants, she becomes a New Orleans witch, and we, as her family, share in the ancestral magic," he proposed.
"We're vampires, Elijah. We can't practice magic. Or own property, for that matter," Rebekah reminded him.
"Yes. With regard to practicing magic. And, as for owning property, Katerina isn't a vampire anymore," Elijah said. "She could hold the title to the plantation. So, if we bury our mother there, and we consecrate those grounds, we can finish The Harvest ritual."
"You're a bit of a mad genius, Elijah," Klaus replied.
"Am I the only one thinking? Our mother was the most powerful witch in history. If we bury her, we hand that power to our enemies to use against us."
"Given our circumstances, I hardly see that we have a choice, Rebekah," Elijah told her.
Rebekah sighed in frustration.
"I don't know why I bother. You two will just do what you want anyway."
"No. Our decision must be unanimous," Elijah told her.
"This is not a democracy," Klaus said.
"You're quite right. This is family," Elijah stated.
"What if you had another option?" Katherine asked them.
"Whatever do you mean?" Elijah inquired.
"I know you're going to hate what I'm about to say, but hear me out. You don't need to use your mother. I can tap into my Traveler lineage and make my magic active. Once I do that, one of you can kill me and my magic will be used, instead. Then, when Davina comes back, she can bring me back. After all, we don't want your mother's magic to be given to witches. It's not because they'll overpower everyone, but because we all know your mother always had a trick up her sleeve."
"You're quite right. I don't like it," Elijah said.
"Well, it's that or our mother," Rebekah replied.
"Let's do this then," Klaus replied.
Kat looked at Elijah.
"It looks like everyone pretty much agrees, so we're doing this. I need to say something first, though. Meet me outside," she told Elijah.
About twenty minutes later, they met in front of the compound outside, a small distance away from the front of the compound.
"What is it that you couldn't say in front of the rest of them?" he needed to know.
She looked at him, standing in front of him.
"I've been keeping a secret. You're the only one that will believe this when it comes from me. If neither of us come back, I have a plan b. I know in the beginning that Esther had more than six of you. There was Freya. Esther told Mikael that Freya died, but that was a lie. I met your sister in a small village once. She told me her story and who she was. Your Aunt Dahlia, Esther's sister, stole her away due to a spell Dahlia did for Esther. Your mother couldn't have children, so she felt like she had to turn to black magic for help. She was afraid that Mikael would abandon her if she couldn't give him children, so Dahlia eventually agreed to it. The price was the first born of every generation. The first born had to be taken to Dahlia and raised by her in the ways of magic. Dahlia grew hungry for that power though, and Freya became a prisoner. Dahlia fed on Freya's magic for several years. She's still a prisoner to Dahlia."
"How is she still alive?"
"Dahlia made a crystal for herself and Freya. It keeps Dahlia from fully draining Freya of her magic, but it also helps Dahlia keep tabs on her. They fall into a slumber every one hundred years. Freya should be waking up in a few months or so, but Dahlia will be, too. If I tell you where Freya and Dahlia are, and if you wake Freya to help, just be warned that it won't be too long that Dahlia will wake up, too. This is the only plan I have, even though I know it's dangerous," she replied.
"How was she when you saw her last?" Elijah wanted to know. He'd never met Freya, but he'd heard great things about her growing up.
"Other than wanting to escape from Dahlia, which gave her the determination of any Mikaelson, she okay for the most part. I felt sorry for her from the time I first met her. Freya was so determined that she tried to kill herself. Because she was pregnant at the time from someone in the village, when she tried to kill herself, she learned that she can't die, but the spell Dahlia did on Freya to make that possible didn't protect her baby, so she lost it. When I first met her, I promised I'd help her find her family. If Davina and I don't come back, this will be the opportunity to wake her up and unite her with the rest of you. Between all of you, you can find a way to destroy Dahlia. And I know you'll find a way to bring both of us back, no matter what," she replied.
She rested a hand on the side of his face, as he silently looked down.
After a few minutes, he finally looked at her.
"I can't lose you, Katerina."
"I know it'll feel as though you've lost me, but you'll have to believe that everything will work out. You know how resilient I am. This is our only chance to save New Orleans, though. If we don't do this, we either do nothing and you lose me anyway, or you give your mother's magic to the witches we don't trust, letting them overpower us all. If she becomes a New Orleans witch, she could destroy everything you ever built here. You know this is the safer option."
"I know. I wish there was another way," he replied.
"As do I," she said.
After a few moments of looking at each other, they began to kiss, saying goodbye in their own special way.
That night, all went according to plan. The ground was consecrated, Sophie killed Davina in the ritual after Klaus killed Kat to consecrate the ground, and then they waited. Nothing happened, though.
