Digital Sea
POV Lila's
We're all in our Nav Skids, traveling in the digital sea.
"Okay then, I'm uploading the program over to you. Now the Skid's sonar should be able to differentiate bio signals from the rest of the computer code in the digital sea," Jeremy says.
"Okay Jeremy. Program received and activated," Aelita acknowledges.
"You think with this we will be able to find out where Xana is keeping the spiritual essence of Mia prisoner?" Odd asks.
"Let's hope so. It's the best chance we have to bring her back into the real world," Jeremy says.
"It would be nice to see Mia again. We have a lot to talk about…" William trails off.
"You know, William," I say, speaking up. "The time travel stuff is more complicated than that. She's your daughter biologically, but that doesn't mean you'll raise the same version of her later on in this timeline."
"I know but I feel like I have a sense of responsibility towards her," William explains.
"That's one thing you don't have in common with Odd. Responsibility," Ulrich jokes.
"Haha very funny, Ulrich. I totally have a sense of responsibility," Odd retorts.
"Sorry Odd dear, but you do tend to be irresponsible sometimes," Sissi says.
We can't help but laugh at that.
"You guys have some sense of humor. Yumi would agree with me that I'm responsible," Odd says.
"Speaking of Yumi, I wouldn't mind being in her shoes today," Jeremy says.
"Are you kidding? I'm so glad I got out of that event," William says. "Helping a bunch of fifth graders isn't exactly the best way to spend the day."
"Oh come on, I bet she's loving it," Jeremy surmises.
"I doubt it, Einstein. If Mrs. Hertz didn't let me hand in that extra credit assignment, I would probably be there with her. I told her I don't work well with kids, so she gave me the opportunity to make up my grade," William explains.
"And of course you took it," Ulrich adds.
"Well duh," William says.
Afterwards
"The detection spectrum is still homing in. The sonar is picking up a faint digital trace in the area. It might be Mia. Or maybe even..." Aelita trails off.
"Your father? What are we waiting for, let's go check it out!" Ulrich exclaims.
"Okay," Aelita says, turning the turbo propellers on. After a few minutes of speeding through the Digital Sea, Jeremy speaks up.
"Sorry Aelita, but you're needed back on Lyoko on the double. Activated tower."
"Got it Jeremy. I'm turning around."
The Skid turns around and I can't help but feel bad for Yumi.
Yumi, I hope you're okay back on Earth all alone, I think.
Shortly after, Jeremy speaks up again.
"Aelita, I just figured out Xana's attack. Xana used a satellite to change the course of a comet. It's going to create a meteor shower that will pour down on Earth," Jeremy informs.
"What, are you sure?" Aelita asks.
"Well, actually, according to my calculations, most of the meteor should burn up completely in the atmosphere. On the other hand, there's a huge chunk behind it that will crash directly into… oh no! Into the factory!" Jeremy exclaims.
My eyes widen, Sissi and I look at each other.
"Jeremy, you have to get out of the computer lab right now," Aelita tells him.
"Yeah!" I exclaim.
"I can't do that, you two. If the computer lab gets destroyed, you guys will get stuck in the digital sea at Xana's mercy. No, we've got to deactivate the tower," Jeremy says.
"Relax Jeremy, we'll do it in no time," Odd says, trying to reassure him.
"We'll do our best," Sissi says.
"For sure," I say.
"Even if we try to do our best, that's not going to stop the meteorite from falling," Ulrich says.
"That's true. And that's why I am staying here at the control center. To launch a return to the past before we're hit by it," Jeremy decides. I look down at my controls… he's always ready to make a huge sacrifice.
"Okay, full speed ahead," Aelita says. The Skid starts going even faster.
"We've got a hub bearing northwest, under the data bank shell," Jeremy informs.
"Got it," Aelita says. From my window, I watch the Skid dive then drive all the way up, passing a structure. We continue moving in that direction, then we can see the hub coming in.
"Hub, dead ahead," she informs.
The Skid slowly starts approaching the hub, coming in closer.
Suddenly the digital sea turns red. We're about to pass by two structures, but the Skid stops. I can tell we're caught by some orange rings. The Skid tries to force its way through, making the rings glow, but we're still stuck.
Suddenly my controls start short circuiting.
"What the?" Sissi asks, her controls are spouting electricity, too.
"What is that?" William asks.
"A firewall. That's got to be a problem from Xana. I'll get us out of it," Aelita replies.
There's a short pause before the Skid tries to push through the firewall again, but we're still stuck.
"It's not working. Jeremy, we've got a problem," Aelita tells him.
"I see it, Aelita," he confirms. "I'm already on it."
It's been a few minutes so Aelita starts the Skid up yet again. The Skid tries to force through the firewall yet again. It's still unsuccessful.
"The firewall's energy is set up along a fairly basic algorithm. All we have to do is crack it and we'll be able to slip through a breach in security," Aelita says.
"Good idea. Hey, I think I finally understand what Xana is really up to," Jeremy says.
"Bravo, Einstein. You realized he wants to destroy the supercomputer to keep us from coming in and pulling the virtual carpet out from under him?" Odd asks.
"Well, obviously," Jeremy replies. "But this time he picked the most perfect moment."
"How do you mean?" I ask.
"It's like this. If Xana destroys the supercomputer, he'll not only destroy Lyoko but more importantly our only way back to the real world. But why would he want to trap us here?" Aelita asks.
"To get a hold of you, Aelita. You too Lila, since he'll always consider you a threat. It's called killing two birds with one stone. Though this time, I guess you can call it killing three birds with one stone."
"We can't let that happen," Sissi says.
"Don't worry, Sissi. We'll escape, you'll see," Odd says.
"Yeah, and then we'll give Xana a run for his virtual money," William jokes.
I see Sissi smiling at that, it appears she's calming down now.
A minute or so passes, and the Skid starts to try and break through the firewall. The Skid moves forward again. It seems to be working this time!
"Got it. I found a weak link in the algorithm. It's as plain as day. The system overcompensates pressure, but it takes three milliseconds to reverse its polarity," Aelita explains.
"Of course. By synchronizing the initial pressure you could neutralize the sinusoidal distortion, Aelita," Jeremy says.
"Come again?" Ulrich asks.
"English translation Einstein!" Odd exclaims.
"Please," Sissi requests.
"Rubber band system," Aelita explains. "Hang on."
Aelita turns the Skid's turbos on. The Skid goes in reverse, which in turn make the firewall look almost like stretching a rubber band. It causes the rings to expand. The Skid continues to push back and the firewall makes a noise.
"Stand by for stopping the turbo prop. Ready? And now!" Aelita exclaims.
The Skid forces its way out and we fly out of the firewall quickly. The movement is so fast, it's causing turbulence which makes all of yelp a bit.
"Nice one, Aelita. Now hurry over to the hub. We need you back on Lyoko asap," Jeremy says.
The shaking stops thankfully. Sissi and I sigh in relief
I can't wait to stretch my legs on Lyoko, I think.
"Roger," Aelita says. The Skid heads to the hub and the digital sea returns to its blue color.
"Everyone okay?" she asks.
"We're fine here Aelita," I say.
"My breakfast wants to come up and say hello. Otherwise, all is well," Odd says.
"Odd, if you puke on me I swear I'll devirtualize you when we're back on Lyoko," William says.
"Relax William, it's impossible to actually puke on Lyoko," Ulrich says.
"Good to know," William says.
We approach the hub, getting just a few feet from it. The Skid moves downwards, so now we're hovering just above the hub.
"Do you read me Aelita? I'm entering the coordinates for Lyoko," Jeremy says.
The Skid is positioned directly above the hub now and turns it to its vertical position.
"Stand by for broadband acceleration in three, two, one. Zero!" Aelita exclaims.
The Skid dives down into the hub, and we vanish into the swirling energy.
Lyoko's Desert Sector
We soon resurface back on Lyoko. The Skid flies up, and then spins. Aelita brings the Skid all the way up to the plateau, which Sissi and I can see from Sissi's window.
"Okay Jeremy. We're back on Lyoko. Where's the activated tower?" Aelita asks.
"Desert sector. Quadrant fifty-seven, forty-two," Jeremy informs.
"Roger," Aelita acknowledges, and pilots her way over to those coordinates.
"There it is," Aelita says. We approach the tower, and once we're close enough, Aelita speaks up again.
"Here we go. Teleport," she says.
We're all teleported out of the Skid and onto the ground.
Outside the Skid
A single Kankerlat comes out from behind the tower.
A Kankerlat huh? We haven't seen these little guys in a while. If someone asked me what my favorite monster is on Lyoko, it would probably be Kankerlats. Yeah, they're annoying pests, but they are one of Xana's monsters that we don't really have to worry about too much, I think.
"The tower is fifty meters away. How much time do we have, Jeremy?" Ulrich asks.
"Enough. If you could get rid of your welcoming committee."
The Kankerlat starts charging its laser at us but then it dies down. It suddenly retreats back to where it came from. Odd walks up a bit further.
"He ran away. Why waste a Laser Arrow on a coward? If one of you wants to take him, he's all yours," Odd offers.
We start running but then stop when we see why the Kankerlat retreated. Two Tarantulas come from behind the activated tower.
"Not good," Sissi says.
"Yeah," I agree. "Here comes trouble."
Ulrich takes his twin katana blades out of their sheaths.
Mia runs up to the two Tarantulas with another Tarantula. She summons her kunai with her black smoke, and grips them in both hands. She growls, shaking her head, and then gets into a defensive position.
The Tarantulas fire a volley wave of lasers at us. We're barely able to dodge them, but we all take cover behind some nearby rocks while the Tarantulas continue their fire.
Aelita and I look out from behind the rocks. Ulrich and William take action, running out to the Tarantulas.
One of the Tarantulas stand up on their back legs, firing at William. He easily jumps over it with his fire power, sending a blast of fire to the soles of feet. He takes out his double edged sword and lands. Ulrich jumps in the air using his super sprint. Both of them are hit by lasers and they fly all the way back over to us, crashing onto the ground.
Odd, Sissi, and I wince at that. I look and see Mia grinning, her arms crossed but still gripping her kunai.
The Tarantulas march forward and fire their lasers at us. Some of them hit the rocks. Odd and I take the opportunity to launch our attacks. I grab an arrow from my quiver and put it on my bow. I pull my drawstring back and release. It flies at the Tarantula. Odd cocks his paws together, firing Laser Arrows out of both of them.
"Laser Arrows!" Odd exclaims. My arrow continues flying at its target while Odd's Laser Arrows miss. The Tarantula fires off a laser at my arrow, deflecting it. I turn back with Odd, Sissi hasn't been able to get a good shot with her boomerang. Ulrich and William finally return to us, they're panting.
"I hate the desert," William complains.
"Yeah, it's hot," Ulrich agrees.
"Well, it is the desert. It's supposed to be hot," Sissi reminds them.
"That's right!" Odd exclaims.
"This doesn't look good. We'll never get through," Aelita says.
"You should never say never," Odd says.
"Except you just said it. Twice, I might add," I tell him.
"It's a joke," Odd explains.
"Ah, okay," I nod.
The Tarantula stands up, trying to fire at us again. It gets back down and Aelita gets out of her hiding spot. She summons an energy field in the palm of her hand and launches it at the Tarantula. Aelita's attack hits its target, shocking it, and the monster explodes.
"Nice one, princess," Odd compliments.
"Yeah, way to go!" Sissi exclaims.
A blast comes from behind us, we look down and see it's the Kankerlat from earlier. Odd cocks his paw, readying his Laser Arrows, but Ulrich super sprints over to the small creature. He gets behind the Kankerlat, plunging his blade into it. The monster explodes.
"A coward and a cheater? Hey!" Odd exclaims, disappointed he didn't get to attack it. Ulrich goes over to him.
"We've got to change tactics," Ulrich says.
"Okay, but how?" William asks.
"Just follow my lead," Ulrich replies. He starts running straight, away from our hiding spots. We put away our weapons and follow.
"How's it going over there, Ulrich?" Jeremy asks.
"Not so good," Ulrich replies.
We keep on running, heading towards the edge of a small bridge ahead. We get to it, with Urlich and William guarding the rest of us.
The two Tarantulas make their way towards us.
"Stay behind us, Aelita. If you get devirtualized, we'll never be able to deactivate the tower," Ulrich says. The Tarantulas reach us and aim their lasers.
I take my hunter's knife out of its holster. One of the Tarantulas starts firing at us. Ulrich uses his katana to reflect the lasers. Using his double edged sword, William uses both sides of his weapon to shield us. Not very effective, since he has to twirl the blade back and forth.
The lasers he misses, I block by using my hunter's knife, sending the lasers back their way. They miss, but Odd runs pass me on all floors. He jumps over Ulrich and William, heading towards one of the Tarantulas.
"How can anyone - be such a -" Odd starts to say, but then is hit by a Tarantula. "Bad shot?" he asks, falling to the ground.
"Odd!" Aelita, Sissi, and I exclaim. Aelita and Sissi run over to Odd to check on him, but the second Tarantula is too close to them. It fires at Ulrich and William again, which makes me grip my hunter's knife. I block some lasers that William misses.
Aelita grabs Odd's right arm and Sissi grabs Odd's left arm. They help Odd up slowly. Ulrich super sprints over to them, while I get in front with William and help him block more of the lasers.
"The Tarantulas haven't fired at me even once," Aelita comments.
Ulrich, William, and I continue reflecting lasers off our weapons.
"That's because you've got a couple of great bodyguards," Odd says.
We continue backing toward the edge, the lasers getting worse.
"If only I could get a good aim, then my boomerang would hit one of those Tarantulas!" Sissi exclaims.
"This time it's all over," Ulrich says.
"No, Ulrich," Aelita says. She flies in the air with her angel wings, and lands in front of us. The Tarantulas stop firing.
"Aelita, what are you doing?" I ask.
"I'm forcing Xana to make a choice," Aelita replies, looking at Mia who growls. She's no longer crossing her arms with the kunai but is instead glaring at us.
The Tarantulas make a noise, and Mia points her kunai at us. She starts walking slowly.
"Hurry Odd, Sissi. One of you devirtualize me," Aelita says, turning around, and facing them.
"Huh? But why?" Sissi asks.
"You must be crazy, Aelita," Odd says.
"One of you do what I say. Please," Aelita requests.
I look at the Tarantulas that put their legs up; with Mia walking between them. Ulrich, Sissi, William, Odd, and myself look at one other. We're all confused.
"Odd, Aelita is right. It's our only hope. If you can't do it, Sissi can but it needs to be done," Jeremy says.
Odd sighs. He cocks his paw and fires a Laser Arrow at Aelita. She's hit by Odd's attack and pushed off her feet. She's devirtualized in a cloud of pixels.
I hope you're right, Jeremy… otherwise we just lost, I think.
The remainder of the pixels disappears in front of Mia who looks down at where Aelita just was. She growls before putting her hands to her sides. She runs and dives into the digital sea, retreating. Ulrich, Odd, William, Sissi, and myself all go over to where she just fell from.
"What was that all about?" Odd asks.
"Not sure," William replies.
We put our weapons away and watch the tower deactivates by itself… Xana really just gave up! It returns to its usual blue aura.
The Tarantulas start disappearing in light purple pixels, they soon vanish completely.
"That was just too close, I could use a nice long break," Sissi says, sitting on the ground. She sighs.
"You said it," I agree.
"Return to the past now," Jeremy says.
A big white bubble engulfs all of us, sending us back in time.
Earlier
After the event
In Jeremy's room
Sissi, Odd, Ulrich, and myself are sitting on Jeremy's bed. Aelita is leaning against Jeremy's desk. Jeremy is sitting on his chair in the middle of the room. This time around William ended up going to class. Mary is with us too this time. She remained on campus with Emily as 'Mia' during the time of the attack.
The door finally swings open revealing Yumi and William behind her.
"So, how was your day, you two?" Jeremy asks.
"You won't believe it, but our group got the highest grade," Yumi replies. "And so I promised Johnny I would keep his moon as a present."
Yumi's holding, what I assume is the moon she just referred to that Johnny made. It's red. She tosses it into the air.
"I owe him at least that. Even if he doesn't remember anything," Yumi replies, catching the object.
"See, your brother is not that bad after all," Aelita says.
"Yeah… he can be pretty handy when he wants to. That's why I'm worried."
"Yeah? How come?" Ulrich asks. Yumi closes the door behind her.
"Because now I know it's useless keeping the door to my room locked," Yumi replies.
"Well, at least you know now," Mary says.
"How about you, William? How did you do?" I ask.
"Not as good. Didn't get the highest grade, but wasn't the lowest either," William replies.
"You participated this time, so that's what counts," Mary says.
"Think so?" William asks.
"For sure," Odd agrees. "After all, participation is important."
"Oh? How would you know about that, Odd dear?" Sissi teases.
All of us can't help but laugh, even Yumi, although Odd doesn't find that funny.
Author's Note: I cut out the stuff with Yumi because I already wrote that half in my original series, Code Lyoko: My Journey. So I felt writing it like this would make the flow a bit better for Changing Destiny: Lila's Journey! While Mary has been a "reoccurring" character and will continue to be one, Future Xana still has a "guest star" appearance so he will only be shown as needed during season 4. Just two more chapters left for part 1!
