Inside the gymnasium
POV Lila's
We're in the gymnasium, Jim has his hands on his hips.
"I'll say it once more," Jim says, speaking up. "For all of you who were daydreaming. One, run up. Two, jump onto the spring broad. Three, push off of the horse. Four, pipe vault. Five, land feet together on the mat," he says, showing all five fingers. "You got that?" he asks.
Herb lifts his finger,
"No, I didn't get it at all, coach. So, would you mind giving us a demonstration, Jim?"
"What's the matter with you, Pichon? There's nothing to it. Only a halfwit couldn't manage it," Jim says. He positions himself just ahead of us, and looks back, then clears his throat and starts running.
"One," Odd counts.
"Two, three," Odd counts. We look on as Jim jumps but lands badly on the spring horse and shouts in pain.
"He got to five without doing four," he says.
A lot of students laugh… a bit disrespectful, honestly. Sissi isn't laughing either, some of Odd's jokes are funny but they shouldn't be when they're at the expense of someone else's pain. Herb and Nicholas seems to have been caught by Jim.
"Pichon, funny, huh? Let's see what you can do," Jim says. He puts his hand on the mat, trying to get up, his hair a bit messy.
Herb starts walking forward and positions himself.
"Don't forget those five golden rules," Jim reminds him.
Herb starts running, he makes it near the spring but then trips. He falls face first onto the spring, then is thrown into the air and over the horse. Finally, Herb lands on the mat.
Some of the others are laughing now, I hear Jeremy laughing and Sissi is trying to refrain. Honestly… that was kind of funny, but it was karma funny, since Herb had it coming. Odd points at him.
"Ha ha! That horse oughta be in the rodeo," he says. Jim looks over at Odd.
"Della Robbia, it's your turn to fall front and center on your face," he says. Odd walks forward happily. He clears his throat.
"Okay," Odd says. Odd starts running, he jumps on the spring and does a perfect handstand on the horse, holds it for a moment, then pushes off and sticks the landing. The students are shocked.
"Well, how was that? You're right, Jim - only a halfwit couldn't manage it," Odd says. Jim looks at him.
Sissi sighs, putting her hand on her head.
He really needs to watch what he says, I think.
Afterwards
Under the arches
Ulrich has his gym clothes in a bag I've never seen before. Odd is holding onto his bag, which he rarely brings to class. We're walking under the arches.
"Come on, I don't believe it, I do a vault worthy of the olympics and bam.
Four hours of detention. Is that the kind of pay off I deserve?" Odd asks.
"Well, yeah," Ulrich replies.
"Honestly, Odd dear, the way you were talking to Jim… it was, how do I say this?" Sissi asks.
"What?" Odd asks.
"It was… Ulrich?" I ask, looking at him.
"Obnoxious, pretentious," Ulrich lists. We look at Odd, he stops walking and so do we.
"Pretentious? No one's more humble than I am," Odd says. Jeremy, Aelita, and Mary make their way over to us.
"Who are you trying to kid? Your middle name oughta be braggart," Jeremy comments.
"I have to agree, Odd," Mary says.
"Yeah. I can't remember one day you didn't sing your own praises," Aelita says.
"Hey, that is so wrong! And I can prove it to you, too," Odd says.
Ulrich chuckles a bit. "Okay, I'll bet you a week of desserts that you can't go twenty-four hours without bragging," he smiles.
"You're on," Odd says, holding his hand out. "I know someone who just won himself some yummy seconds."
Ulrich slaps Odd's hand. "Yeah, me," he says.
"No, me," Odd says.
"Uh huh, me," Ulrich says. Sissi rolls her eyes at them.
"If you guys are all through, may I remind you we're supposed to be blowing up Xana's supercomputer, tonight after class?" Jeremy asks.
"In the jungle?" I ask.
"You mean we're going back already?" Ulrich asks.
"That's right, and we don't think it will be a problem," Aelita replies. "Odd knocked out the energy field protecting it last time."
"And once again where mere mortals have failed, Odd demonstrates his great- uh...modesty and humility," Odd says, catching himself.
"So thanks to our non-bragging hero, it's going to be a piece of cake," Jeremy says.
"Odd dear, I do think you'll end up losing that bet," Sissi says.
"We'll see! Like Jeremy said, I'll be a non bragging hero. It'll be a piece of cake," Odd repeats.
"I wish all of you the best of luck," Mary says.
"Thanks," I smile.
Later
At the manhole entrance
It's nearly sundown, Yumi pulls the manhole grate to the side. She starts climbing down, followed by Jeremy, Aelita, myself, Sissi, Odd, William, and Ulrich.
Once we're all touching the ground, we run to our riding equipment. Jeremy, Aelita, and I grab our scooters first. We start pedaling through the tunnel system. We hear the others behind us, Sissi seems to be ahead, since I hear her pedaling. Jeremy makes a noise, some wind bothering him at the speed he is going.
We soon reach the end of the tunnel system. All of us put our riding
equipment to the side. We start climbing up the ladder. First Jeremy, then Odd, Sissi, Ulrich, and William. Aelita and I are the last ones out, she pulls the sliding door back to its place, sealing the passage. It was recently put in by Jeremy and Aelita, they felt it was better than that old grate we used to have a while back.
Aelita and I catch up to the others, we're now all running on the bridge. We soon reach the inside of the factory. Ulrich and William use the metal ropes to swing down, followed by Aelita, then myself. I land on the floor. Jeremy and the others are already in the freight elevator. Aelita and I run into it, then Jeremy presses the red button to go down. The hangar door closes and the freight elevator brings us down.
Afterwards
Sector Five
We're waiting for the elevator. It soon arrives and fixes itself to the floor. We start walking and we get on it. We're brought up to the hangar room.

Inside the NavSkid
We're all in our NavSkids now, with The Skid heading downwards towards the digital sea. The Skid dives until we're hovering just above it.
"I'm entering the coordinates of the Replika," Jeremy informs.
The Skid dives down into the digital sea.
Digital Sea
We're leaving the tunnel and the Skid enters the digital sea. We start heading for the Replika.
"Holo-web system connected. You should be able to see it now, I've got it on radar."
Afterwards
We soon start approaching the replika and The Skid turns into its vertical position.
"Affirmative, digital key engaged," Aelita says.
The Skid shoots an energy beam towards the door and connects for a moment, then disperses. The door opens, lowering itself.
The Skid goes into the mouth-like entrance, and once we're fully in, the entrance closes behind us.
Afterwards
Forest Sector Replika
The Skid emerges, spinning it as it does. We soon reach the plateaus. Aelita spots a tower.
"Tower in sight, Jeremy."
The Skid is positioned next to the tower.
"Docking," Aelita says. The Skid sends purple energy to the tower to act as an anchor.
"Gotcha. I'm activating the tower for us," Jeremy informs. The tower's aura shifts from blue to green.
"Are you ready?" Jeremy asks.
"Ready," Yumi replies.
"Ready," Ulrich answers.
"Same here, Einstein," William says.
"Teleportation: Ulrich. Teleportation: Yumi. Teleportation: William."
It seems Sissi, Odd, Aelita, and I will have to guard the Skid. Too bad… I would have liked to battle that possessed scientist again.
Inside the building
POV William's
Ulrich, Yumi, and I appear inside the lab. This is totally cool! Our outfits look lifelike… so strange.
"You're the greatest, Jeremy. It worked," Ulrich compliments.
"You're teleportation is pretty accurate," Yumi agrees.
"Yeah, we're actually right in the middle of the lab," I say.
"Cut the flattery you guys, before it goes to my head. Like Odd," Jeremy says.
POV Lila's
"I do not have a swelled head. That being said, considering my extraordinary exploits last time, I don't see why I wasn't teleported over," Odd says.
"Got to give everyone a chance, Odd," Jeremy explains.
"Yeah, that's true," I agree.
"Besides, Odd dear, don't forget you still have the bet," Sissi reminds him.
"Yeah, Sissi's right, Odd. If the only desert you want to eat for a week is humble pie, just keep it up," Aelita says.
Odd sighs.
POV William's
"So, Jeremy, where are we going?" I ask, Ulrich and Yumi surveying the area.
"Head east. You'll go through a door. Then go straight and a little further on your left, you should see the door to the supercomputer room."
Ulrich, Yumi, and I take off in those exact directions.
"Got it, we're on it," Ulrich says.
We keep running, Yumi and I passing Ulrich. For some reason he's stopped, so the two of us backtrack to see what Ulrich's looking at through the window of the door.
"Bingo," Ulrich says.
"Great. All you've got to do now is open the door and trash the supercomputer. We told you this would be no problem."
Yumi walks over to a touch panel, which I assume unlocks the door. Yumi tries pressing some random buttons. The panel turns red, and makes a low, alarm like sound.
"Jeremy, why can't I get the door open?" Yumi asks.
"Oh right, Aelita used her digital power to open it the last time. Hang on, I'll figure out something."
"Let me handle this," Ulrich suggests. He takes out one of his twin katana blades.
"Wait-" He smashes the screen with the hilt of his blade, and it starts sparking.
"Uh, too late," Ulrich says.
"Nice one, now the panel is dead. The door is still locked. Good going," I say.
"What an idiot. I said to wait, Ulrich," Jeremy says.
"Well you should have said it sooner. What do we do now?" Ulrich asks.
"Ugh… hold on." There's a short pause.
"Ah, I've got an idea! You guys have to cut the power to the door's electromagnetic locking mechanism."
"I assume you know where it is?" Ulrich asks.
"Yeah. I'll guide you and William there."
"I'll stay here. As soon as it opens I'll go in and get rid of the supercomputer," Yumi says.
"Ulrich, William. Turn around and go back to the first intersection. Then take the corridor on the right."
Ulrich and I start running back to that intersection.
"We're on it, Jeremy," I say.
POV Lila's
"Jeremy, can you hear us? Everything okay?" Aelita asks.
"Uh, just a little problem. No sweat. Everything is cool."
"Are you sure, because I would love to go help Ulrich, Yumi, and William," Odd says.
There's a short pause.
"Sorry Odd, but you've got your work cut out for you already. I just spotted an activated tower."
"We're on it, Jeremy. Get ready to disembark, you guys. Disembark!"
Outside the Skid
Aelita, Odd, Sissi, and I appear together in front of Jeremy's activated tower. Odd looks up.
"Einstein, could you send us our-" he starts to say, but is interrupted by our vehicles already being materialized. He looks at his Overboard.
"What were you saying, Odd?"
"Oh nothing, thanks," Odd replies. He steps onto his Overboard.
"Uh oh. It looks like we've got a little problem here, too," Aelita says.
"I see Mia and three Hornets," Jeremy confirms.
Odd, Sissi, Aelita, and I start walking towards them. We can see Mia holding onto her kunai and the Hornets surrounding her.
"Jeremy, should Odd and Sissi stay here to fight them off? While Lila and I go to deactivate the tower?" Aelita asks.
"No, the tower is too far away. Odd and Sissi could never handle them alone," Jeremy says.
"Hey, we can so!" Sissi exclaims.
"Yeah, and if we can't do it together then four Laser Arrows should be more than enough. Then it's game over for Mia and the Hornets," Odd says.
Aelita puts her hands on her hips. I look at Odd disapprovingly, too.
"Odd, forget about your bet," Aelita says. Odd laughs nervously.
"That isn't bragging. It's the simple truth."
"Oh, really Odd dear? Afraid of a little competition?" Sissi asks.
"I-" Odd is about to say but is interrupted by a Hornet that fires next to Aelita and me. Odd covers us, then crosses his arms to summon his purple shield ability.
"Shield!" Odd exclaims. Odd manages to save us. The Hornet fire a few more lasers, but they hit Odd's shield. He then lowers it and looks at us.
"You see? Lucky for us, I was here," Odd says.
Aelita, Sissi, and I roll our eyes at him.
"Listen, it's easy. Just hold off Mia long enough for Ulrich and William to neutralize the generator. It'll only take a few minutes."
"What should we do?" I ask.
"Stay with Aelita, Lila. If things get out of control, you have your broomstick there to get you out of the situation. Sissi, head out with Odd."
"Gotcha," Sissi says.
Sissi hops onto her Overbike and Odd steps onto his Overboard. Sissi revs up her Overbike and takes off.
"Hey!" Odd exclaims, and takes off after her.
Aelita and I giggle at that. Those two really are great together, but Odd needs to be mindful of what he says.
POV William's
"Ulrich, William, do you read me? Where are you two?" Jeremy asks.
"We're in front of the generator."
"That's great. Tell me how it looks."
"Ulrich?" I ask.
"Right. Well… it's this huge machine with these flashing thingamajigs all over it," Ulrich replies. I sigh.
"Okay, now just neutralize the commutator that powers the lab's doors," Jeremy says.
"The what?" I ask.
"The button. Do you two see a little red button?"
"We do… but…" I trail off.
"But what?"
"There's not just one. There's millions of them. This thing is lit up like a pinball machine," Ulrich replies.
"Just proceed by elimination."
"No, I'm going to do this my way. William, follow my lead," Ulrich says.
"Right," I nod.
"Hang on, William. Your way, Ulrich? Like smashing the generator to short circuit the supercomputer?"
"You guessed it," Ulrich replies.
"Just give me a minute to think it over."
We wait for Jeremy's decision and soon he speaks up.
"Ulrich, your idea isn't big on finesse, but it should work. You and William are a go," Jeremy says, giving us the green light.
Ulrich and I walk up to the flashing machine. Ulrich and I unsheath our weapons.
Together, we plunge them into the machine. This machine short circuits, then starts to smoke. Ulrich and I back away, just in case.
POV Lila's
The first thing Mia did when she caught up to us was destroy my broomstick so Aelita and I couldn't fly away. Well, we still had our powers, but so did she, and her Supersmoke was faster than wings or streams of ice. Mia starts walking towards us slowly, her kunai gripped in her hands.
"Energy field!" Aelita exclaims, summoning her energy field. She launches it at Mia who slashes right through it with the Kunai.
I take my bow off its hook and grab an arrow from my quiver. I put the arrow on my bow and pull my drawstring back.
I release the arrow from my bow. It flies at Mia but she cuts through that, too.
Aelita summons another energy field and launches it at Mia. Mia reflects the attack with her Kunai, not even breaking her stride.
I shoot another arrow, but it's no good. Mia destroys that one, too. Aelita and I start backing up.
Aelita summons another energy field. She launches it at Mia who simply turns her head to the right, dodging it. Mia smirks.
"Aelita, Lila, the Replika is disappearing. You'd better get airborne."
I put my bow back on its hook. Aelita waves her star bracelet and her angel wings appear. She grabs me under my arms, and lifts me into the air. We watch the sector disappear before our eyes, letting Mia drop to the digital sea.
"No!" Mia exclaims. Odd and Sissi return to us.
"That was what you call a real swan song dive," Odd jokes.
"You said it," Sissi agrees.
"I told you this would be a piece of cake. Your mission is over. You can head for the Skid now, you guys," Jeremy says.
POV William's
"Are you two ready? I'm teleporting you back," Jeremy says.
Suddenly the lights in the room start rebooting.
"Woah, hold on, I think something is up," Ulrich says.
"It looks like the power is back on, somehow," I say.
There's some sort of alarm going off.
POV Lila's
For some reason, the Replika starts regenerating itself. Aelita and I land on the ground. Odd and Sissi fly their vehicles over to us. Odd does a flip to get off his Overboard. It continues flying away while Sissi simply gets off her Overbike.
"Uh, Jeremy, is the Replika supposed to be regenerating?" Odd asks.
"No, it's not supposed to."
"How strange," I say.
"What do you think the problem is?" Sissi asks.
"Not sure," I reply. "A backup generator, maybe?"
POV William's
"Ulrich, William. There's got to be a backup generator somewhere."
Ulrich and I had left the room earlier, making our way back to Yumi.
"No kidding, even we could have figured that out," Ulrich says.
"Where is it?" I ask.
"Hold on, you two. I'm looking for it."
"We're going back to Yumi," Ulrich says, and we hear Yumi talking.
"Jeremy, how come I haven't been teleported yet? What's that alarm?" she asks.
"Oh, just a little hang up, nothing important."
We arrive in time to see one of the mechanical spiders attacking Yumi. She falls down, but I get my double edged sword out. Even though I'm afraid of spiders, and the others know it, too… I do my best to quickly stab the mechanical spider in its target eye. The mechanical spider short circuits. I then lift my double edged sword and throw it so the spider can explode out of range.
"Nice one, come on," Ulrich urges. I put my double edged sword back in its sheath. We start running, following Ulrich.
"Spiders, of all of the mechanical robots in the world Xana could have built. Why did it have to be spiders?" I shudder.
"At least we can see these ones and fight back," Yumi replies.
We continue running down the corridor.
"Well, Jeremy, where is this backup generator?" Ulrich asks.
"I still can't find it," Jeremy replies.
"Better take care of those spiders before they take care of us," Ulrich says.
POV Lila's
"Aelita," Jeremy says. Aelita looks up.
"You have to deactivate the tower. Lila, go with her. Odd, Sissi, you two stay there to protect the Skid."
Odd groans.
"Oh no, why do I have to stay while everyone is having fun?" he asks.
"Odd," Aelita and Sissi say in unison.
"What? I wasn't bragging," Odd defends.
Aelita and Sissi sigh. Mia pops back up with her super smoke ability.
She grips her Kunai and sighs in relief with that dark tone of hers.
"Great. Sissi, someone just showed up who wants to play. Go on, you two," Odd says.
"Don't scratch my ride, Lila," Sissi says.
"Haha, I won't," I say. Odd's Overboard hovers over to Aelita. I mount Sissi's Overbike and rev it up. Aelita jumps onto the Overboard, together we take off in the direction of the activated tower.
POV William's
Yumi, Ulrich, and I make a turn and run down another corridor, hearing the mechanical legs of the spider pursuing us.
This is like my worst nightmare coming true. Being chased by a spider! I think. We continue running down the corridor and then turn to the right, only to find two more mechanical spiders guarding a door behind them.
"Woah!" Ulrich exclaims as we stop short.
The mechanical spider that was chasing us has caught up. Ulrich grabs his katana blade's hilt. I grab my double edge blade, readying it too.
"Oh no," Ulrich says. He and Yumi are back to back and I'm to the side.
"To think, this was supposed to be a piece of cake," Ulrich says.
"Yeah, so much for that," I agree, as more mechanical spiders surround us.
POV Lila's
"Aelita, Lila, better hurry. Yumi, Ulrich, and William are in a huge jam."
Aelita and I flying together, traveling down the path.
"We're doing what we can, but we still have a ways to go," Aelita says.
POV William's
The alarm continues. We're completely surrounded. A mechanical spider attacks Ulrich, but he manages to use one of his katana blades to cut through its target eye. My hands aren't exactly shaking, but I think Yumi noticed they trembled a bit earlier.
Darn fear of spiders, I think.
"Yumi, Ulrich, William. I just located the auxiliary generator," Jeremy informs. We're backed up against each other.
"Thanks, but it's too little too late," Ulrich says.
Three of the mechanical spiders leaps into the air. They pounce on the three of us, we scream.
POV Lila's
Aelita and I continue traveling down the path as we have been for a few minutes.
"Aelita, you have to deactivate that tower right away. Lila, if you can head back, the Skid is unguarded," Jeremy informs.
"Okay, I'll try," I say.
Sissi must have made her way back into the Skid, I think.
Aelita and I hear buzzing from behind us. We look to see three Hornets are pursuing us.
"No," Aelita says. We look ahead and an incoming laser passes us. We try to dodge the next ones, but we're hit. We tumble onto the ground, with our friends vehicles bouncing out of control on.
The Hornets close in, firing their lasers at us. We're hit. Aelita and I fall off our feet and devirtualize in a cloud of pixels.
Afterwards
Inside the lab
Aelita and I are back in the lab, watching Odd's progress.
"One arrow is all I need," Odd says.
You can do it, Odd, I think.
"De-teleportation: Odd," Jeremy says, while typing on the keyboard. I can't believe he did it, and all on his own.
There's a short pause.
"Hey, nice place you got here, Aelita," Odd says.
"Huh?" Ulrich asks, waking up. "What's - what's going on?" he asks.
"Nothing, things are cool. Go back to sleep," Odd replies.
"Ugh…" Sissi trails off, waking up. "Mia hasn't used her whip in a while. That really caught me off guard," she mentions.
"Not to worry, Sissi, everything's okay," Odd says.
"You can come back, Odd. It's over," Jeremy tells him.
Aelita and I smile at each other and the supercomputer. Odd really did well today.
Odd manages to pilot the Skid out of the Replika just in time, as the Replika is destroyed.
Jeremy sighs in relief. He takes off the headset earpiece, placing it on the keyboard.
"You were right, you know, you couldn't have asked for an easier mission," Aelita says.
Jeremy looks at her. I can't help but think it could have been a little easier.
The Next Day
Inside the boy's bathroom
POV William's
I brush my teeth, having just finished up my shower, a towel wrapped around me. Ulrich has been washing his face with a small towel, some soap is still on his face.
"He took out Mia and the supercomputer all on his own?" Ulrich asks.
"That's… pretty good," I admit, and stop brushing my teeth.
"More like crazy," Ulrich says.
Jeremy looks up from the sink, soap on his face too.
"What's crazier is he hasn't even bragged about it once. Maybe he's changed," Jeremy says.
Jeremy grabs the towel and starts cleaning his face.
"You mean he's suddenly become humble?" Ulrich asks.
"Miracles happen," Jeremy replies. He drops the towel and looks at us.
"Maybe he's become a sensible and responsible kid," he says.
"Yee haw!" Odd exclaims, sliding over to us. His hair is wet, so the hairspray isn't working. He has a towel wrapped around him, too.
"Forty one seconds flat," Odd says, pointing over to us, then to himself.
"You are now looking at the world record holder for the fastest shower. How cool is that?" Odd asks. He starts dancing around.
"Give me an O," he says. "Give me an D," He turns in a different direction. "Give me a D."
Jeremy, Ulrich, and I give him a look.
"Who's the man of the century?" Odd asks. "It's Odd!" he cheers. Odd walks over to the mirror and admires his reflection.
"And you're handsome, too. Oh, I love it when you break records like that," Odd says, flexing his muscles.
"Odd," Ulrich and I say.
"Yeah, right, no problem. Ulrich. You can have my desserts," Odd says, still flexing.
"You don't even care?" Ulrich asks.
"I guess I've got to face facts," Odd replies. "Yes, I'm a braggart. I love it that way," he says. "Svelte but muscular, don't you think?"
"I hope you plan on sharing some of your winnings, Ulrich," I say.
"Sure," Ulrich says.
