Mary's Goodwill
AKA A Lack of Goodwill
POV Mary's
It's early in the morning. The great thing about not being human is that I get to do the things I need to do to help Mia. Every morning since the day of her possession, I've recorded thorough entries in a document format on her computer. I haven't had the time to look through those programs… but one day I will. Or Lila will.
I suppose since I've taken Mia's place, there's no harm in it and there are no repercussions. All in all, I suppose Mia's sacrifice for her father might have paid off for this timeline.
I look at the mirror and smile. I know Delmas still wants to speak with me and Mia one day soon. I'm not sure about what, but until then, I can't help but think Mia is going to be happy with the choices I made for her. Especially her grades… I've tried my best not to be too smart. My goodwill can only go so far, though.
Later
Inside the cafeteria
POV Lila's
We're finished with our lunch with our lunch trays in the center of the table. I'm sitting next to Aelita. Odd is sitting across from us, while Sissi is sitting on the right side of him.
"It's a question of reflexes, you've gotta trust your instincts," Odd says.
"Anything you can do, I can do better, Odd," Aelita tells him.
"Wanna bet?" Odd asks, leaning forward.
"You're on," Aelita replies, leaning forward too.
Odd puts the fork on the table then puts a meatball on the fork. He makes a fist.
"Watch and weep," Odd says.
Odd slams his fist on the front end of the fork, the meatball flies into the air. He catches it with his hand.
"Nice one, Odd dear," Sissi compliments.
"Thanks Sissi," Odd says. He lowers his hand and looks at Ulrich who is sitting next to him.
"Like I told you, my Odd-like sixth sense defies all limitations," Odd says, pointing to the meatball.
Yumi is sitting on the other side of me, with Jeremy sitting on the other side of her. William is sitting at the front end of the table near Sissi. We can't help but laugh at Odd's claim.
"I'm not so sure about that, Odd," I say, still trying to stop laughing.
Aelita puts her fork down, an orange at the end of it.
"Okay, sure, now admire my Aelita-like sixth sense," Aelita says. Aelita slams her fist down on the end of the fork. The orange flies in the air, but it flies toward Yumi and I. We dodge, and it flies over us, but only just barely.
Aelita yelps as it flies over to Herb and Nicholas's table. It lands in Herb's mashed potatoes which splatter all over him. Herb gets up.
"Who just did that?!" he exclaims.
Nicholas can't help but laugh at his friend, we can help but laugh, but choose to anyway.
"You win, hands down. Even at the top of my form, I could never match that," Odd says.
Mary walks over to us with Emily. Mary says something to her, and then heads over to us. She passes Herb as he leaves the cafeteria with Nicholas following behind him.
"Hey everyone," Mary greets.
"How are you doing 'Mia'?" William asks.
"Fine, thanks. So did I miss something?" Mary asks.
"Yeah, you just missed Aelita's amazing fork skills," Ulrich chuckles.
"Bedar, can I talk to you?" Jim asks, coming over to us. Mary turns around and looks at him.
"Sure thing, Jim," Mary replies. She and Jim go outside.
"What do you think that's about?" Aelita asks.
"I don't know," I reply.
Outside the cafeteria
POV Mary's
Jim closes the door behind us, we walk a bit in the courtyard, then he turns and faces me.
"So, what's the matter Jim?" I ask.
"I wouldn't say something is the matter, but have you heard from your mother, Mrs. Smith yet?" Jim asks.
"No," I lie.
"Well, be that as it may, your principal would like to have a word with the both of you," Jim says.
Do you think Mia's false credentials have been found out? Future Xana asks.
No, I'm sure that's not the case, I reply.
"Jim," I say, "could you please just tell me what this is about?"
Jim sighs. "I'm not really supposed to tell you, because I don't want to get your hopes up."
"My hopes up?" I raise my eyebrow.
Jim sighs. "Look, you didn't hear it from me, but Mr. Delmas is concerned about your mother. There's something in the works for her here when she does return."
I raise my eyebrow.
"What do you mean? What kind of something?" I ask, then my eyes widen. "Like… a job offer?"
We hear the cafeteria's doors opening, and turn to see the others.
POV Lila's
We walk down the steps, and I overhear the last bit of Jim and Mary's conversation:
"Look, just don't worry about it too much right now." He walks away and Mary walks up to us.
"What was that about?" I ask.
"Nothing to worry about," Mary reassures me. We start walking into the courtyard.
"Anyway, I did improve the superscan, thanks to the data you collected during your last jaunt on the network," Jeremy says. We keep walking until we reach the arches.
"I was able to set things up so that it can find more replikas," he explains.
"You mean, there could be more of them out there?" William asks.
"Sure," Jeremy replies, looking at him. "In fact, I've already managed to localize a second one."
"A second one?" Yumi asks.
"Just how many of these replikas things do you think there are?" Sissi asks.
"I have no idea," Jeremy replies. "But I suppose, if we destroy them all, we'll finally be rid of Xana for good."
"Fantastic, I love it when you talk like that. When do we start?" Odd asks.
"Tonight," Jeremy answers.
"That's good," I say. "Say, are you sure that everything is okay…" I look around to make sure no one is around to hear me, "Mary?" I finish.
"It's fine Lila," Mary replies.
"Are you sure?" I ask. The bell rings.
"I'm sure. It's nothing to worry about. Okay?" Mary asks. She and the others start walking to class. I sigh.
"For now at least," I whisper, walking quickly to catch up with them.
Later
Sector Five
Skid Hangar
We're on our teleporting spots, waiting for Jeremy.
"Ready to go? Okay, energize!"
We're energized one by one into our Nav Skids.
Inside the Nav Skid
I drop to my seat, and I see Sissi does too. We strap ourselves in.
"Replika, here I come. Odd the best, the greatest, the lean mean wrecking machine!" Odd exclaims.
"Odd, don't make me slap you," William warns.
"You said it, William. Besides, lean sounds right, I don't know about the rest. Don't forget who saved you from the digital sea last time," Ulrich reminds him.
"And who took out those two Megatanks with nothing but his claws? It was Odd. Odd the magnificent. Hey, I like that. Odd the magnificent."
The Skid starts flying out of the hangar.
"I got devirtualized thanks to Odd the lameo," Ulrich tells him. "And if it hadn't been for me, you would have-"
"Well, well, aren't we being sensitive today?" Odd interrupts.
"Odd," Sissi says.
"What? He is," Odd defends himself. "Listen, if you want to be the hero, I can give you lessons. But not everyone has the right stuff. The main thing is staying humble."
"That's all the boys talk about," Yumi says. We're close to exit.
"I'm the greatest at this, you can't be me at that."
The Skid flies out of the hangar.
"Yeah, not exactly very humble, Odd," I say.
"What? I'm not being humble? Ulrich's the one who isn't humble enough. He can't even admit he can't hold a candle to me," Odd says. "Even though he knows I'm better."
Ulrich scoffs as the Skid heads to the tunnel.
"Haha, okay Odd the magnificent, let's check the results out at the end of the day," Ulrich says.
"Hey, cut the hot air and let me concentrate. Okay guys?" Aelita asks.
The Skid is being piloted out of Sector Five.
In the digital sea
Shortly after, we're in the digital sea.
"Holo web system online. Aelita, I'm sending you the Replika's coordinates."
"Gotcha Jeremy," Aelita says.
We're on our way to the replika.
We soon reach a hub, then the Skid turns into its vertical position.
"High speed acceleration in three seconds," Aelita informs.
"Three, two, one."
POV Mary's
I just finished tutoring Emily and close the door behind me. I see Tamiya and Milly. For some reason, it appears they've been waiting for me because Tamiya starts rolling her camera. Milly walks up to me with a pencil and notepad.
This can't be good, I think.
No, it cannot, Future Xana agrees.
"Mia, we were doing a story about students who are excelling in their classes. Do you think you're doing better than Jeremy and Aelita?" Milly asks.
"I wouldn't say better, no," I reply.
POV Lila's
The Skid approaches the replika, it's within sight now.
"Replika straight ahead," Aelita says. "Jeremy, you found it within a micro-bit."
"Great. The improvements on the superscan seems to be effective."
The Skid is guided to the front of the entrance and slowly switches to its vertical position.
"Digital key operational."
An energy beam is sent from the Skid to the entrance.
"You're localization program works like a charm," Yumi compliments. "At this rate, we'll be able to wipe Xana out in no time."
"That's for sure," William agrees. The energy beam disperses and the entrance opens.
"Oh, it's no big deal. All I had to do was to reconfigure the course of the altered algorithms based on the data you recovered from the first replika," Jeremy explains.
"Sounds simple to you, but it's greek to me," Odd says.
"Me too," Sissi says as we enter the replika.
"There's only one sector: the desert."
Desert Sector Replika
The Skid flies out of the digital sea, and it's back in its vertical position.
The Skid flies all the way up to the plateaus, spinning as usual.
"Tower over at eleven o'clock," Jeremy informs.
"I see it," Aelita says. The Skid heads for the tower.
"Good, dock the Skid while I activate the tower for our own use, so we can carry out the teleportation," Jeremy says.
"It's as good as done," Aelita says, initiating the docking procedure.
POV Mary's
"Can I leave yet? If Jim sees that I've stayed beyond the extra time I was allotted because of my tutoring, that'll mean detention," I say.
Milly and Tamiya look at me. Milly is about to say something but then Tamiya speaks up.
"Fine, we just have one question. Who are you right now, Mia Bedard or Mary Bedard?" Tamiya asks.
My eyes widen.
They must have overheard the conversation, Future Xana surmises.
"Tamiya!" Milly exclaims. She puts her hand on her head then sighs. She takes her notepad out, and her pencil.
"So, will you answer the question?" Milly asks.
"I'm not sure what you're referring to," I reply.
"Look, we overheard you talking to Lila and the others. We know you're Mia's twin sister, but why pose as her?" Tamiya asks.
I sigh.
"Is that all? I've really got to be going. I don't want to sound mean, but it's none of your business," I say. I start walking and pass them. They look at me, annoyed, before I continue down the hallway.
We need to inform Jeremy, Future Xana tells me.
I know. I have to be careful. I have a feeling our two journalists here will follow me. At least they assume I'm Mia's twin, I say.
Location:
New Mexico
POV Lila's
Ulrich, Aelita, and I have already been teleported to a desert area. If I'm not mistaken, this seems to be New Mexico.
In a strange way, at least I'm traveling the world, I think.
We're hiding behind a rock, then Ulrich starts running. Aelita and I go to catch up to him.
We see a sort of base up ahead.
"It looks like some kind of a military base. With no one here, it shouldn't be too hard," he surmises.
"You're right, Ulrich, it is a military base. And it's obviously been abandoned.
I located a plan of it on the internet, so I can guide you."
POV Mary's
Since I didn't want to let the girls follow me in the woods, I'm running down the steps by the gym. I reach the end of the hallway, then quickly get inside and run to the boiler room. Once I get there I open it up and close it behind me, just in time to hear the entrance to the gym open.
Got to think, quickly! I think.
I change into my white smoke form and fly through the door to the sewers, in the direction of the factory.
"How could we have lost her?" Milly pouts.
"I'm not sure, but I don't like this place. Should we tell Delmas and Jim?" Tamiya asks.
I stop myself, hovering above the water.
"No, there's not enough evidence yet. We could confront them at the school and make a scene," Milly says.
"Yeah, that might work!" Tamiya exclaims.
What's our next move? Future Xana asks.
We're going to the lab. Jeremy needs to know so he can launch a return trip, I reply.
Inside the military base
POV Lila's
The door opens automatically. Aelita gasps at the sight. There are a lot of robotic hands working on...something.
It's some sort of assembly line, like we had in the factory.
We walk in and inspect one of the assembly lines. There's some sort of material on it that I don't recognize.
"What is this place?" Ulrich asks.
"Not sure, I would like to know that too," I reply.
"Jeremy? Jeremy?" Aelita asks.
Jeremy doesn't answer. One of the robotic hands is stamping the product.
"Woah, check it out. It's like a scene from the executioner two," Ulrich references. "And it smells like Odd's feet in here."
"What worries me most is that we lost contact with Jeremy," Aelita says.
"Me too, it could mean trouble," I agree.
"We have to find a way to get back to the Skid and return to the factory," Aelita tells us.
"I think that might be best," I nod.
"Abort the mission?" Ulrich asks, his hands on his hips. He points over to the assembly lines.
"Look around, you two. Xana's putting something really serious together."
"I don't like it any more than you do, but Jeremy must need our help. Something's wrong," Aelita says.
"Well, anyway, if we do decide to abort. There's only one way to get back to the Skid," Ulrich says.
POV Mary's
I'm in the freight elevator, in my normal form. The freight elevator heads down to the supercomputer room. The doors open and I see Mia holding Jeremy by his shirt.
"Leave him alone!" I exclaim. I run at Mia, and wrap my arms around.
"Sorry about this, Mia," I tell her. I shock Mia and she starts screaming in that possessed mechanical tone of hers.
I let go of her and she collapses to the ground. I go over to Jeremy.
"Hi Mary, what are you doing here?" Jeremy asks, a bit out of it.
"I had some trouble with two journalists. We'll need a return trip," I reply.
"Two journalists? You - you mean Milly and Tamiya?" Jeremy asks.
"Yes," I reply. Jeremy tries to get back up, but he slides back.
"Listen, go back to the computer lab. Tell the others they've got to get back here, and fast," he says.
"Are you sure? What about Mia?" I ask.
"She's unconscious, for now," Jeremy replies.
"Yes, but not for long. Look I'll go up to the lab in my spectre form. If you get the chance, trap Mia inside the elevator. I'll lock her inside from there," I tell him.
"Okay, I will," Jeremy says. Changing into my white smoke form, I fly up through the ceiling.
Inside the lab
Going through the floor, I go back to my normal form. My feet on the floor, I rush over to the chair and take my position at the keyboard.
"Odd, Yumi, Sissi, William, it's Mary," I say.
"Huh, Mary?" Odd asks.
"Mary, what are you doing at the factory?" Yumi asks.
"It's a long story," I reply.
"Well, that's a surprise," Sissi says.
"Any idea where Jeremy is?" William asks.
"Jeremy is in the supercomputer room with an unconscious Mia. He told me to tell you to come back right away," I explain.
"We're on our way," Yumi says.
POV Lila's
"Did you hear that? If Mary is in the factory for some reason, that means we've got a big problem," I say.
"Let's go," Aelita says, getting into a stance.
"Okay," Ulrich agrees.
I take my arrow out and put it on my bow. I pull the drawstring back, pointing the arrow at Ulrich. Ulrich readies his katana blade. Aelita summons her energy field, aiming it at me.
"On three, one, two-" Aelita says. Ulrich swings his blade, I release my arrow, and Aelita fires her energy field. Our attacks hit each other in unison.
POV Mary's
I get a text from Jeremy, letting me know Mia is in the elevator. I quickly start typing on the keyboard, then lock the elevator so Mia can't get back up here. That should contain her for now.
Inside the Nav Skid
POV Lila's
Waking up, I hear Aelita say:
"Embarking, Odd, Sissi, and William."
Sissi reappears in her seat, she straps herself in.
"Too close," she sighs in relief.
"Okay, everyone is onboard. Next stop, Lyoko," Aelita says.
Afterwards
In the digital sea
"There's the hub," Aelita says.
The Skid switches to its vertical position above the hub.
"Ready for high speed acceleration."
"Ready," Ulrich says.
"Whenever you want, princess," Odd says.
"Yeah," William says.
"We're ready, too," I inform.
We dive into the hub, and shortly after, we're shot out.
"Mary, how is everything in the lab?" I ask.
"Fine for now, Mia is locked in the elevator. But knowing Xana, he'll find a way to get Mia to free herself," Mary replies.
The Skid keeps heading to Lyoko but then something starts to change.
"Do you see what I see?" Odd asks.
"Yeah, it's too quiet," Ulrich replies.
"That's for sure," William agrees. The digital sea's color changes from blue to red.
"Retro brakes," Aelita says, stopping the Skid.
From afar, we can see three shark creatures swimming around.
"I really didn't feel like fishing," Aelita says. "Bombs away!"
Our Nav Skids are released, and I take the controls. The three Nav Skids take off, heading towards the sharks.
"Get ready, Sissi," I tell her.
"Right!" Sissi exclaims.
The Sharks start swimming in closer to us, they fire off torpedoes but I take the controls and spin, dodging them. Ulrich does the same.
"Hey you two, watch it!" William exclaims.
"Yeah, keep to your right you sunday drivers!" Odd exclaims.
We split off from one another. I follow Ulrich, while Odd goes off in his own direction.
"Odd and I have got two stuck to us," William informs.
"That's worse than forgetting your candy bar and juice during a heatwave," Odd jokes.
"Just another groupie crazy about Odd the magnificent. Haha," Ulrich chuckles.
"Hey you guys, I'm trying to concentrate!" Sissi exclaims.
"Sorry!" The three boys exclaim.
I continue following Ulrich to Odd's and William's location. Getting there, we see the two sharks that are following them.
"Now, Sissi!" I exclaim.
"Right! Torpedo!" Sissi exclaims.
"Torpedo!" Ulrich exclaims.
Our torpedoes are fired out of the Nav Skid. They fly fast, and hit their targets, which explode.
"Ulrich, higher up," I tell him.
"I see it. I can get him," Ulrich says.
"Only because it's you," Odd says.
The remaining Shark starts following Ulrich, firing torpedoes at him. Ulrich dodges them with ease then flies ahead. He makes a u-turn and heads for the Shark. The Shark passes by him, then does a u turn itself. The shark heads back for Ulrich. I watch, ready at the controls in case he needs my help.
"Over here, cutie pie," Ulrich taunts, they follow him.
"Now!" Ulrich exclaims. He fires off two torpedoes. They spin together, then hit their target. The Shark explodes. Ulrich pilots his Nav Skid towards where the shark exploded. I take follow him.
"Aren't you tired of me saving you all of the time?" Ulrich asks.
"Everybody, back to Skid asap. We've already lost a lot of time," Aelita tells us.
The digital sea's color starts turning from red to blue. The three of us pilot our Nav Skids to the Skid and reattach.
POV Mary's
"Well done, but we've got a situation here," I tell them.
"What's wrong, Mary?" Lila asks.
Yumi and I watch as Mia pries open the elevator door.
You and Yumi need to be ready. She's breaking through, Future Xana tells me.
"Yumi, be careful," I tell her.
"I know. Let's hope the others are on their way," Yumi says.
Outside Sector Five
POV Lila's
Not hearing Mary's response worries me. The Skid flies out of the digital sea.
"Mary, we're on Lyoko," Aelita informs her.
We hear a scream coming from the intercom, it's Yumi's voice!
"What's going on out there?" William asks, concerned.
"Aelita, please hurry!" Ulrich exclaims.
The Skid starts driving a bit faster.
Sector Five
Skid Hangar
"Mary, if you can hear me, we're starting the docking procedure," Aelita informs, lowering the Skid down to the supports. We reach them, and one by one the supports attach to the Skid. We're energized out of it.
Ulrich, William, Odd, Aelita, Sissi, and I reappear on our teleporting spots.
"Mary is still not answering," I say.
"Neither is Jeremy," Aelita says.
"Yumi must have been hurt, we've got to go back," Ulrich says.
"Well, there aren't a whole lot of ways to devirtualize ourselves," Odd says, cocking his paw. Ulrich takes his twin blades out. William readies his fireball. I give Sissi my hunter's knife, and she takes it. I aim an arrow at her.
"Okay, you three go first. Sissi, William, and I will devirtualize ourselves," I say.
"Got it," Ulrich says.
Aelita summons her energy field. The three of them quickly devirtualize each other. Giving them a few seconds, William, Sissi, and I look at each other. William raises his hand, summoning his fireball.
"Ready, you two?" William asks. We nod.
Sissi pulls her arm back, readying her boomerang, I pull my drawstring back and William pulls his arm back. All of us unleash our attacks, our, devirtualizing each other in a cloud of pixels.
Inside the scanner room
The scanners open slowly, smoke pouring out of them for some reason. Odd, Ulrich, and Aelita waiting for us in the middle of the room. The scanners don't smoke all of the time, but every now and then they will. I always found that weird.
"Is there something wrong with the scanners?" Sissi asks. William and I step out of our scanners too.
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Aelita replies.
"No time for small talk," Ulrich tells us.
"Jeremy, Mary, Yumi. Are you all okay? We're in the scanner room now," Aelita informs them.
Please be alright, I think, worried.
There's no response, so we get in the elevator and head to the computer room.
Inside the lab
The freight elevator's doors open. Yumi seems to have been thrown against the wall, she's unconscious. Ulrich and William run over to check on her. I run over to Mary who is by the side of the holosphere display case. Odd, Sissi are with me. Mary groans, waking up.
"Sorry… she got the best of me," Mary says. Aelita gets on Jeremy's chair, she starts typing.
"Mia set up a delayed virtualization, she's going back to the network," Aelita informs.
"What's more, she managed to cut the cooling system."
Aelita continues typing, I hear Yumi groaning. Sissi, Odd, and I help Mary up. Ulrich and William bring Yumi over to us. We watch Aelita type, and she presses one final button. We hear something on the window going down.
"But I managed to stop the process in time," she says.
Too close, I think.
I sigh in relief. Now to find Jeremy.
Afterwards
Jeremy is in his chair, sighing from what Mary told us. Somehow Milly and Tamiya overheard our entire conversation.
"What do we do now?" I ask.
"We'll have to initiate a return trip," Jeremy replies.
"Seems like we don't have a choice," William says.
"I'm sorry. Mary's been posing as Mia for four months now… and if I would have simply called her Mia…" I trail off.
"Hey, you have nothing to be sorry for," Sissi says, trying to reassure me.
"Yeah, this could have happened to anyone of us," Odd says.
"We just need to be more mindful. After all, walls have ears you know," Yumi says.
"That they do," Mary says.
Jeremy starts typing on the keyboard. He then presses the enter key.
"Return to the past now!" Jeremy exclaims. A big white bubble comes out of the display case, it engulfs all of us sending us back in time.
Earlier in the morning
Inside the cafeteria
We're all sitting in the same seats from the first time.
"I know what you're thinking, but I won't do it again," Odd says, to Jeremy. Odd takes an orange and eats it. He chews it.
"A wise decision Odd," Jeremy says.
"Look at you growing up," William teases.
Odd swallows his food.
"Haha very funny," he says.
We can't help but laugh. It seems people can change. Even if it's for a little while.
Author's Note: The next chapter is going to be amazing, and it's one of my favorites. Distant Memory! I can't wait for all of you to read this one!
