Bad Connection

POV Lila's

Boy's Dorm Floor

All of us, including Mary, are walking over to Ulrich and Odd's room.

"Come on, Odd! Knock it off and open this door right now!" Ulrich exclaims, pounding his fist on the door. His hair is a mess, and he has a towel wrapped around his waist. I may have had two relationships, but I'm always going to be shy when people I know are almost half naked.

Like that one time when Yumi and I were in the boys room, Christophe and another student were in there. That was ages ago, though.

"Stern," Jeremy speaks up, trying to impersonate Jim. "What do you think you're doing walking around half naked?" he asks. Ulrich turns to us and can't help but chuckle sarcastically. Yumi, Mary, Sissi, and I all have our hands by our eyes, trying to avoid eye contact with him.

"Haha, very funny," Ulrich says. We reach Ulrich, so we have no choice but to put our hands down. "Pretty awful imitation of Delmas."

"I would know, too, since I possessed and impersonated my father that one time," Sissi recalls.

"But it wasn't Delmas, it was Jim," Jeremy says. The others laugh, but Mary and I don't find it that funny.

"I figured it was Jim, Jeremy," I tell him.

"Thanks," Jeremy says.

"Anyways, what are you doing out here?" William asks. Ulrich turns to the door.

"I've been stuck out here for fifteen minutes. Odd refuses to open up," Ulrich explains.

"How come?" Aelita asks, her hands behind her.

"Who knows? He won't even answer me," Ulrich replies.

"Well," Sissi exasperates. "I do know he's been stressed recently. He wouldn't tell me about what, though."

"He wouldn't?" Mary asks.

"No," Sissi replies, shaking her head.

"Let me handle it," Jeremy says, lifting his finger.

Jeremy walks over to the door and gives it a knock.

"Odd, if you don't open this door you won't get mine or 'Mia's' portion of meatballs!" he exclaims.

"Nice try, but it's not going to work," Ulrich says.

We hear a click. Aelita, Sissi, Yumi, and I can't help but smile.

"Never fails," Jeremy says proudly.

Jeremy opens the door and gestures to Ulrich to go inside.

"After you, sir," Jeremy says. Ulrich walks in.

Ulrich and Odd's Room

Odd is sitting on his bed, his arms on his knees. It's clear he's sulking.

"What's wrong with you, Odd? Is it because of your film?" Jeremy asks.

"Yes," Odd answers, putting his hand on his head.

"I mean no," he corrects himself, putting his hand down.

"It's not the first time that a film of mine will be screened for an audience of ignoramuses," he says, pressing his hands together.

"Odd, dear, I'll pretend I didn't hear that," Sissi says.

"Not you guys, of course, but you get what I mean," Odd says.

"Then what's wrong?" I ask.

"My parents are in town and they're coming to see my film," Odd explains, pressing his fingers together.

"That's really nice of them," Yumi says.

"No, it stinks," Odd tells us. We look at him, confused.

Ulrich goes to sit down on Odd's bed, then clears his throat.

"You didn't have a fight with them?" he asks.

Odd gets up. He puts his hands behind him, and starts walking to a desk.

"No, just the opposite," he says.

"What is it then?" William asks.

"A weird relationship problem," Odd answers. "Teenagers are always having conflicts with their parents," he starts, then slouches. "A generation gap. Except for one: me," he sighs, then goes on. "My mother and father are always cool, supportive, understanding."

Odd turns to us. His hands are at his sides.

"In fact, they're just perfect," he mentions. He then turns back to the desk.

"Bummer, I'll trade yours for mine anytime," Ulrich says.

Odd put his hands up. "If there was only something we could fight over," he says, putting his hands on the desk. "So I can finally be a normal adolescent."

"What a major drag, I really feel sorry for you," Jeremy says, sarcastically.

"We could really feel your pain," Yumi says.

"That's right, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes," Aelita says.

"Ditto," Sissi agrees.

"Yeah," William agrees.

Mary and I remain silent. Odd sighs.

"I knew I couldn't expect you to understand," he says.

Afterwards

Outside the dormitory

We walk out the back door of the dormitory, waiting outside for Odd's parents.

"Cheer up, maybe they'll hate your film," Ulrich says. A car pulls up. A man and woman both get out of the car.

"Yeah, that would be too good to be true," Odd says.

They walk over together and soon reach us.

"How's it going, kid?" Mr. Della Robbia asks Odd. Looking at him, he's kind of muscular. He has tattoos on each arm. His hair is a dirty blonde. He's wearing a dark blue t-shirt, light blue jeans, and black shoes.

"Couldn't be better," Odd replies. Mr. Della Robbia laughs.

Mrs. Della Robbia has dark brown hair. She's wearing a pink scarf around her hair and neck. She's also got a bag on her shoulder. She's wearing a dark red jacket with pink stripes on it. Mrs. Della Robbia bends down to kiss her son on the cheek. She stops, then puts her hand on his shoulder.

"Odd, it's really good to see you," Mr. Della Robbia says.

"You look really wonderful. You've still got a great appetite, don't you?" Mrs. Della Robbia asks. Odd doesn't say anything.

"These must be your friends, and your girlfriend," Mr. Della Robbia says, bowing almost. "Odd talks a lot about you. Especially you, Miss Delmas," he says.

"Please, Sissi is fine," Sissi says, smiling. We can't help but smile too.

"How do you do?" Aelita asks.

"Hello sir," Jeremy says.

"Hello," Ulrich says.

"Hello," Yumi says.

"Nice to meet you," William says.

"It really is," I smile.

"I hope you both had a good trip here," Mary says.

Mr. Della Robbia and Mrs. Della Robbia nod.

"We're really delighted to meet you all at last. Here, this is a present for you," Mrs. Della Robbia says, taking it out of her bag. The gift wrapping paper is orange with a pink bow on it.

"You can wear it to the screening. Why don't you try it on?" Mrs. Della Robbia asks.

"Okay, but later. I'm really much too busy right now," Odd says, then runs up the steps. His parents look at him, and we look at each other.

"I guess he's a little upset because of the screening," Mr. Della Robbia surmises.

"That's understandable. After all, it is a premiere," Mrs. Della Robbia agrees.

They are really so nice, I think, not understanding Odd's problem.

Later

Gymnasium

All of us are in the front row, sitting next to each other. Mary is sitting on my right side. Sissi is sitting on my left, for some reason she seems to be sulking.

"Sissi, is something wrong?" I ask her.

"My father broke my cell phone," Sissi whispers to me. "And I hadn't asked him for an upgrade in a while. He was trying to see if he could fix it first and well..." she put her hand in her pocket, grabbing something. She takes it out and shows me phone ripped in two pieces. I guess Mr. Delmas will probably have to get her a new phone now.

Yikes, that's not good, I think.

"Sorry that happened," I say. She puts the pieces back in her pocket, and looks ahead to the stage, sulking a bit.

I look over to Jeremy and Aelita. Jeremy has his laptop out. He starts typing on it.

"I'm putting it to sleep," Jeremy says. He closes the laptop. "Odd would kill me if the superscan went off in the middle of his film."

"At any rate, there's not much of a chance Xana would launch an attack during the three minutes the film lasts," Aelita laughs lightly. For some reason, Odd still isn't here. Mrs. Della Robbia stands up.

"But where is Odd?" she asks.

"I have no idea," Mr. Delmas replies. Ulrich gets up, and so does William.

"I'd better go and see if I can find him," Ulrich says.

"I'll join you," William offers.

"Sure," Ulrich nods.

William walks over to Ulrich, then the two of them walk away to find Odd.

Hopefully he's okay, I think. Mr. Delmas gets up to go find him, too. Mr. Chardin gets up and walks over to the stage and takes the microphone. I see Mr. Delmas returning to his seat.

"Very well, now we can begin," Mr. Chardin starts. There's some feedback in the microphone and Mr. Chardin clears his throat.

"Welcome cinema lovers to the special screening of Mandibles and Purple Mauve. The latest creation of our own: Odd Della Robbia. Please do forgive me for not having seen this work yet. I understand, however, that the film cleverly combines fiction with documentary. Truth, in short. But in the end, what is truth?" Mr. Chardin asks.

I gotta say, I am curious as to what film Odd made this time. His last one had Sissi, William, and himself in it, I think.

Mr. Chardin continues talking for another minute or so, then clears his throat. He puts his hands on the sides of his white jacket.

"Right," Mr. Chardin says, gesturing towards us. "But why don't we all listen now to the filmmaker himself about his latest work. Odd, you have the floor."

Every pair of eyes in the room turns to Odd. Including his parents. The only one who isn't looking at Odd is Jim. I can't help but feel bad since Odd has his hand behind his head. I know what it's like to have stage fright, but I think he's just nervous with Ulrich and William behind him.

Afterwards

Ulrich and William take their seats. Odd is now on the stage at the microphone.

"Hello, first of all I would like to-" Odd starts to say, but is interrupted by someone's cell phone ringing. He looks over to the side and I see his father holding up his cell phone. Mr. Della Robbia leaves the gymnasium. Odd looks disappointed. Mr. Delmas gets up.

"We'll start the screening as soon the director's father returns," he announces.

Shortly after Mr. Della Robbia returns. He goes to where his wife and Mr. Delmas are sitting. For some reason it seems Mr. Della Robbia is angry at Mr. Delmas. Suddenly, lots of students' cell phones start ringing, and they pick up. Jeremy looks at them, his hands crossed.

"Since when do you keep your cell phones on in a movie theater?" Jim asks. "Hey! Take the wax out of your ears and listen," he says. I see that his cell phone is ringing too.

I think Jim upgraded his cell phone. One time I could have sworn I saw him with a pink one, I think.

I look at the others again. This is just getting too weird.

"If it's okay with everyone, we can begin," Odd says, not using the mic.

"What does that little brat want?" Mrs. Della Robbia asks.

"Maybe he wants us to shut his trap for him," Mr. Della Robbia replies.

"It wouldn't do him any harm," Mrs. Della Robbia agrees. Odd looks at his parents, confused.

"Something is going on, and I don't like the looks of it," Jeremy says. He opens his laptop, taking it out of his messenger bag. He presses a key and we hear the alarm sound for an activated tower.

"Just what I was afraid of, an activated tower," Jeremy says. He closes his laptop and stows it in the messenger bag. Jeremy gets up from his chair. "Looks like Xana is using cell phones. If you get a call, whatever you do, don't answer."

"Mh-hmm," Yumi agrees.

"Now I'm actually glad my father broke my cell phone," Sissi says.

"A blessing in disguise, it would seem," Mary comments. Jeremy, Yumi, Aelita, William, and I start to leave. Mary, and Sissi are hanging back, just in case Odd needs help getting out. Ulrich soon catches up to us.

Afterwards

Inside the lab

Jeremy taps his chair impatiently. We're in the freight elevator.

"What are they doing?" he asks, looking at us. "Where are they?"

"I thought they were behind us. Odd, Sissi, and Mary must have been held up behind Odd's fan club," Ulrich surmises.

Jeremy lifts his finger.

"I'll check out what's happening by scanning the location of their cell phones," he says. He presses a key, and I hear a window pop up. There's a short pause, but then a confirmation sound.

"Okay, I found them," Jeremy says.

"Where are they?" Yumi asks.

"Take a guess," Jeremy replies. Jeremy fixes his glasses to the bridge of his nose. "Looks pretty bad for them. Mary can't do much, since she won't be able to deal with so many possessed people. They're totally surrounded." He looks at us.

"We should go back and rescue them," William says. Aelita gestures to the floor.

"But how? The whole school is out to get them," she says.

"It would be difficult…" I trail off.

"It would be faster if we deactivated the tower," Yumi says. Jeremy starts typing.

"That's what we've got to do. Go on, head for the scanner room. You're going in right now. Let's hope Odd, Sissi, and Mary can play for time."

Yumi presses the red button to go down. The freight elevator's close, and down we go.

Afterwards

Inside the scanner room

Aelita, Yumi, and Ulrich have just been virtualized, and the scanners open again.

"Lila, William, you two are good to go," Jeremy says.

"Right," William says.

I walk into the middle scanner. William takes the right hand scanner and gets in. The scanners doors close, and so do my eyes.

"Transfer: Lila, Transfer: William," Jeremy starts. The scanner starts to hum and spin.

"Scanner: Lila, Scanner: William," he continues. The scanner continues humming and spinning. I wait for the gush of wind and brief light.

"Virtualization!"

The gush of wind and light engulf me. It billows my hair and lifts my time machine necklace lightly. I'm off to Lyoko.

Lyoko's Mountain Sector

My vision returns. I see William and I are falling. We soon land on the ground behind the others. There's a path ahead of us.

"The tower in front of you, at the end of the path," Jeremy informs.

We start running along the path. Ulrich and I look up and spot the activated tower.

"Any suggestions, Einstein? Like a ladder, maybe?" Ulrich asks. "Without vehicles, forget about it." He puts his hands on his hips. "You could have virtualized us at the summit," he says.

"Sorry, but there's a bug. I couldn't do any better," Jeremy explains.

Ah, so that's why, I think.

"And now I can't even bring up your vehicles. Xana threw a virus into the program. All I can get you is the Overwing."

"Send it anyway, it'll have to do," Ulrich says.

"Coming up," Jeremy says. We look to the right to see the Overwing materializing.

"Want to keep me company?" Yumi asks.

Ulrich smiles, then gets on the Overwing. He puts his hands on Yumi's shoulders.

Aelita waves her hand over her star bracelet. Her angel wings appear. William looks down at his feet, he breathes in and out. I see fire starting to come out of them.

"Okay, let's go," Aelita says. She flies over to me, then puts her hands under my arms. She lifts me up into the air.

"Blast off!" William exclaims. He takes off in a huge fiery rocket-like way. He then spreads his arms and shoots fire out of them, too. All of us circle the big mountain that leads to the activated tower. Aelita, William, and I are closing in on the top. We hear lasers going off, then hear Ulrich and Yumi yelling. We turn to see the two of them have lost the Overwing.

Ulrich has his katana blade plunged into the side of the mountain. He's just caught Yumi with his free hand. Now both of them are in trouble.

Close one, I sigh in relief. I look over to see the Mantas firing at them. William stops and turns to the Mantas.

He and Aelita fly over to help. William summons a fireball.

"Fireball!" he exclaims. He launches the fireball at one of the Mantas. Since Aelita is holding me, she can't use her energy field. Not trying to hit her, I take my bow off its hook. I grab an arrow from my quiver. The fireball hits the target eye of the Manta, and the Manta explodes. The other Manta screeches and flies away.

Aelita, William, and I follow it, but its still going after Yumi and Ulrich. Yumi takes her Tessen Fan out. She tries to get an aim on it, but it's no good. The Manta retreats, but makes it way towards us.

"Now, Lila!" Aelita exclaims. I put my arrow on the bow. I pull the drawstring back, then release. The arrow flies at the Manta, and hits its target eye. It explodes. I put my bow away, making sure I don't hit Aelita.

"Nice one, Lila," Yumi compliments.

"Can't hold on any longer!" Ulrich exclaims.

His hand slips. They fall and scream on their way down.

"Lila, you need to use your ice powers, now," Aelita tells me.

"Right," I say. I channel my ice powers to my hands, then let go so Aelita can do her thing. As I fall, my snowflake amulet glows.

My hands get colder, and my ice is unleashed. I fly higher up, and Aelita uses her creativity ability to create a small floating mountain platform. Ulrich and Yumi soon land on it easily. I keep my ice powers focused, so I don't lose concentration.

"Yes!" Aelita exclaims, making a fist.

"Way to go, Aelita," William says, hovering in the air.

"Thanks, let's go to them," Aelita suggests.

"Right," I say.

We fly to the small platform Aelita just created. William and I touch down on the ground, our powers dispersing. Aelita's angel wings disappear too.

"Are you okay?" Aelita asks, concerned.

"Yeah, thanks Aelita. Lila, you were brave for letting go of her," Yumi tells me. I nod.

"Had to do it so you two could be safe," I say.

Ulrich goes over to the edge. He puts his foot near the edge, then looks down. He backs up, a bit dazed. I think his vertigo will always get the better of him.

"Ugh," Ulrich says, scoffing.

"Just great. Jeremy, what's happening with Odd's Overboard?" he asks. Ulrich walks over to us.

"It's loading, but it'll take a little time," Jeremy answers.

We look up at where the tower is.

"We could try to climb up," Yumi suggests.

"We'd never make it," William says.

"Yeah," Ulrich agrees. "The rock faces are much too smooth." He rubs his arm. Yumi leans in.

"Still scared of heights, huh?" she teases. A laser nearly hits them. We hide behind the pointy bit of the platform. Krabs continue firing at us. Aelita waves her hand over her star bracelet. Her angel wings appear, and she flies above us.

"Looks like shellfish are back in season," Ulrich jokes.

"Yeah, welcoming us back with open claws," Yumi jokes. We look at her.

"Okay, I'm on it," Aelita says.

"Good luck," I say, since it'll be easier for me to stay here, rather than have Aelita carry me.

"Thanks!" Aelita exclaims. She flies up. Peering from behind our hiding spot, I see Aelita is already high in the air. She summons one energy field to the palm of her hand.

She launches it at one of the Krab's that's firing its laser. The Krab stops, and moves to the side. Aelita misses. The Krab fires at Aelita but she flies to the right side, the Krab missing her.

"I'm going to try something," Yumi says. She takes a Tessen Fan out, opens it, runs, jumps off the platform, spins, and throws her weapon.

"Yumi!" the three of us exclaim.

It seems Yumi is able to land on the path we were on earlier. Looking up, I see Yumi's Tessen Fan cutting the legs off the Krab. The Krab keels over and falls down, still shooting lasers.

Not good! I think.

The Krab continues to fall down, and I see Yumi's Tessen Fan going in her direction. Yumi catches her weapon. The falling Krab's laser goes off and hits Yumi.

"Yumi, you just lost forty life points. Do you hear me?"

Going over to the edge, we see Yumi falling down, devirtualizing in a cloud of pixels. A Kankrelat dealt the final blow. It sees us up here, then starts firing at us. The remaining Krab also fires at us. Ulrich, William, and I go against the pointy rock that's part of the platform, barricading against the barrage of lasers.

Aelita flies back over to us and summons her energy field in one hand. The Krab from above continues to fire its laser, so she flies up.

"Energy field!" She pulls her arm back, and throws it. We don't hear the Krab exploding, so that means she missed it. The Krab continues firing at Aelita who evades the lasers, still flying.

Aelita dives a little. The Krab and Kankrelat continue to fire at the three of us, not giving us room to attack.

"Jeremy, we're not getting anywhere here," Ulrich informs.

"I'm almost there. Ulrich, Lila, William. Overboard in two or three seconds."

We continue dodging the lasers, rolling to the left.

"It's about time," Ulrich says. He uses his katana blade to block a laser. The Overboard is materialized just a bit below the edge of the platform. The monsters continue firing at us.

"Here we go!" Ulrich exclaims.

Ulrich sighs. He jumps down first. Followed by William. Sighing, I jump down. All of us are now on Overboard, but it's a tight fit. Ulrich's in charge of flying and he's a bit wobbly, but if we hang onto each other's shoulders and we should be fine.

Ulrich groans. It's obvious he's scared. We fly over to Aelita while being continuously shot at. Aelita sees us, and Ulrich stops. Aelita meets up with us.

"Woah, how does Odd manage to pilot this thing?" he asks.

"For starters, he doesn't have three people on them," Aelita jokes. "Lila, you can be with me," she says.

"Right," I nod.

"And Ulrich, the other thing is he's not afraid of falling," Aelita adds.

"If you want me to, I can fly this thing, Ulrich," William offers.

"No," Ulrich shakes his head. "I'll figure it out."

Aelita lifts me off the Overboard. She flies me up, and Ulrich finds his own way.

Shortly after, Aelita manages to fly us up and behind the Krab. We see Ulrich has managed to find his way up here with William. The Krab is focused on them.

"Drop me right on it," I whisper.

"Gotcha," Aelita says, and silently flies me closer over to the Krab. Soon, we're hovering above it. I take my hunter's knife out of its holster. Aelita lets me go, and I drop down. The Krab hears me, but it's too late. I land on the Krab's head.

I pull my hunter's knife back, then plunge my blade into the target eye. Light starts to shine from within, so I take my weapon out and jump back onto the ground, and the Krab explodes into pieces.

Aelita flies back over to me, I see the boys on the way to deal with the Kankrelat.

"Hurry up, Aelita, the coast is clear!"

Aelita looks at me, I nod.

"Go on," I urge. Aelita starts running to the tower then runs into the tower's doorway. I hear an explosion nearby.

"Nicely done, you guys," Jeremy compliments the boys. I smile and look up at the tower's red aura.

I take it Ulrich and William have been materialized, since I can't see them anymore. Since Aelita and I are still on Lyoko, Jeremy says:

"Uh, return to the past now!"

A big white bubble engulfs everything, sending us back in time.

Earlier

Gymnasium

We're back in the gymnasium, watching Odd's film. Jim is trying to get a stuck soccer ball out of the ground.

"And here we have a splending specimen of a dung beetle," Odd adds. All of us can't help but laugh.

This time I'm sitting next to Mary, she's laughing, too. It's good to see her enjoying her time as Mia. Jim falls to the ground. I can even hear Jim in the back laughing at himself.

"And now we have a magnificent field grasshopper," Odd continues. The person that's in the film now is Mr. Delmas. Mr. Delmas is playing with some sort of ball and string toy. He tries to get the ball on top of the toy, but it misses and lands on his foot, which he lifts and grabs with his hand.

"Ooh, ooh!" Mr. Delmas exclaims, in pain.

We still can't help but laugh. Looking at Mr. Delmas, though, he doesn't seem pleased. I can tell he and Odd are probably going to have a talk about this later. I pay attention to the screen. It changes again, to what I believe is Sissi's room. Sissi looks at Odd curiously, raising one of her eyebrows.

"But what can this strange creature be?" Odd asks. Some students start laughing, as it seems like Sissi's in her blanket. It looks like a cocoon of sorts.

"It's an enormous larva," Odd says, which causes some more students to laugh. But not us.

Odd, you'd better be heading towards a good thing, here, I think.

Sissi got out from under her blanket in the film. She was in a pink nightgown that had some red on it. She stretched her hand in the air.

"A caterpillar," Odd says. Sissi sighed in the film.

"Metamorphosing into one of the most lovely butterflies I've seen." She gets up from her bed.

"Aw," some of the students say.

Sissi can't help but smile at Odd. Odd winks at her and Sissi's smile's happily. I think I can see a hint of red in her cheeks too, she's clearly blushing.

Honestly, I'm glad they ended up getting in a relationship. They're really made for each other, I think.
