"what's a soulmate?" such an odd question. but then again... is it really odd?
what is a soulmate? the norm anyone would ask would be,
'who's your soulmate?'
'have you found your soulmate?'
'are they your soulmate?' some would even ask coyly.
but we've been too focused on trying to find that special someone so much, that we haven't stopped to think how we know when we find that someone. because of society inflicting too much of romantic fantasies, we never care to acknowledge if we ever will live those fantasies, or how will they play out.
for love is just as complicated as the life they live and the universe itself. it can come from anywhere, but you feel it nowhere. it takes a lot to justify what 'love' - or in this case - 'soulmates' really is. after all... it just takes that one person, no matter far they may seem, to show they care for your life. it is why we live after all, is it not?
still, even so, no one can really answer such a odd (but then again not too odd) question...
until now.
Po and Crane were currently taking care of Lei Lei in the court yard, a panda cub that has taken fond of a certain tiger, while said tiger was teaching a class at the same moment, inside the training hall.
Crane, who was surprisingly a 'love sick beak head' (as a certain panda described) was entertaining the little panda girl a forbidden love story between a prince and a princess who's empire's are in a current feud. it was at that moment that a question popped in the four year old's head,
"what's a soulmate?"
the avian's beak immediately shut tight as his eyes grew wide. 'what's a soulmate'? an odd question indeed. he shook out of his shocked stupor and stuttered, "um.. w-what was that, Lei Lei?" he asked, trying to obtain a smile.
Po watched on in silence as he was thinking of the question himself. "beaky man keeps on saying 'soulmates', what's a soulmate?" she asked innocently.
the panda and looked at eachother awkwardly, and looked back at the curious panda cub. Crane kept opening his mouth and closing it, also trying to ponder the question. both had never heard such a question before, 'who's your soulmate'? heard that one on the regular. 'have you found your soulmate yet'? sure they heard that. 'are they your soulmate'? an uncomfortable question the 2 kept getting from each their feathery parents. but... no one ever dared to ask what a soulmate was. - much less from a 4 year old - it was just second nature to them. they never had an answer they would just... know. it was definitely hard to put into words.
Po, noticing Crane's fidgeting and struggling, decided to finally take matters into his own hands - or... paws...
he lifted Lei Lei on his lap and gave a playful but still thoughtful expression to also show he was thinking of an answer. he then smiled.
"a soulmate huh?" he looked to the distance absentmindedly, and chapped his lips. "well let's see, it's uh... it's like a best friend but more." he started finally giving the panda on his lap a glance, who was immediately intrigued. Crane looked at the jaded eyed bear as the avian peeked interest as well.
"your soulmate is the one person in the world who knows you better than anyone else, most likely even better than yourself." Po paused for a moment as Lei Lei stared with hopeful eyes, pleading him to continue, and so he did. "it's someone who makes you a better person." he paused to correct himself. "actually no they don't do that, you do that yourself... because they inspire you." the tiger master who took the name Tigress stepped forward, lacing on every single of her friends words.
"a soulmate is someone you can carry with you forever! it's the one person who... who knew you and accepted you and..." he looked down and smiled, as his own words reminded him of a special feline in his life. "and believed in you when nobody else did, or when no one else would!..."
"and no matter what happens... you'll always love them. and no force on earth could ever change that," he looked back at Lei Lei to make sure she understood everything he said, after all she's still too small to be thinking of stuff like this, but seeing her awed expression warmed his heart and made him know for sure, without any words, she knew exactly what he was talking about. his smile grew wider, knowing that was enough. "because a soulmate is someone who completes you, no matter how similar or different they are from you. they're the yin to your yang! I hope that answers your question." he finished kindly, earning a beak drop from the crane he forgot was still there. he chuckled at his reaction and looked back at Lei Lei who nodded enthusiastically.
"but... how do I find my soulmate?" Po tapped his chin and looked up thinking for another answer to another hard question. until a flash of gongmen crossed his mind. he remembered how he and the five, including Shifu, Ox and Croc, were trying to defeat the unstoppable weapon (that turned out to be not-unstoppable after all, much to everyone's relief), while beating ever wolf on sight. he then remember as the were almost about to stop the final boat from crossing the main bridge, Shen blasted another cannon in his direction with a maddening grin. but then Po remembered getting shoved out of the way by his best friend and comrade, her staggered 'PO!' was the last thing he heard before getting blasted away. he then remembered how it was because of her sacrifice that she took most of the hit, breaking some of her ribs in the process. a devastating sight indeed. he finally remembered when he first got blasted out of the Shen's factory, her heartbreaking call to him as she chased after him until he blasted out of the factory and into the abliss echoed through his name.
"cuddles?" a small and fragile voice broke the giant panda out of his thoughts, he glanced at the worried Lei Lei, and then the worried Crane. he smiled, "I'm okay..." he really was. because it was because of those memories that he was able to answer the cubs question, as his last memory was the look of relief on the tiger masters face as she smiled tiredly while laying in the water. at that moment for the first time in her 20 years, she was able to feel the grasp of the pandas hands as she stroked it gingerly, satisfied that she kept him safe despite the fact it almost cost her her life.
"you'll be able to find your soulmate... when you know for sure they would risk their very life for you, as you would for them. and you'll know when you find them, when they give you the same look you give them, despite everyone else surrounding them. because they will stand out to you, as you do for them. and you'll know by that one look of love... and that act of selflessness, that they're the one." Lei Lei's eyes lit up in excitement, until one last difficult... but also familiar question slipped through her mind and out her mouth,
"does that mean stripey baby is your soulmate?"
"PFFFT-!" Crane started honking (which was his way of coughing and/or choking) on the air drastically, as the older panda blushed ferociously, his whole face covered in a dark red. Lei Lei looked at the bird the Po with a confused face. "what's wrong? cuddles and stripy baby are soulmates, right?"
"I uh..." Po scratched the back of his head nervously and darted his eyes to the side. he then went back and thought over his words, and was reminded of how and why he answered the way he did. the only thing he thought of when he thought of 'soulmate' was his best friend, the one person who has been by his side and understood him better than anyone has, the one person who would calm him down with tough love and their personal sparring. he looked at Lei Lei in realisation, and grinned sheepishly, still accompanied by a blush in his white chubby cheeks. "you know what? I think... I think we are.."
Crane's beak dropped again. "heh, just don't tell her I said that, alright?" Po joked as he poked the giggling Lei Lei's belly button. this was where someone familiar decided to intervene.
"don't tell me you said what?" Crane and Po jumped up and turned around in a panic. "WAAAAGH!" they looked back at the curious Tigress, who perked up a confused eyebrow with hands on her hips.
"now I know how you always feel when Tigress sneaks up on you." he whispered to Po, who's face was very flushed as he nodded frantically, making the feline master roll her eyes. "would you 2 calm down, I just came to collect Lei Lei."
"cuddles was telling me about soulmates!" the cub beamed from the panda's arms. Tigress looked at Po, quite shocked herself. "really?" she asked, a hint of astonishment and and impressiveness, making the panda chuckle nervously, turning more red by the second. "heh.. um... y-yeah..." he stuttered, making the crane smirk knowingly. Po whispered in Lei Lei's ear 'do not mention anything else I said! okay?' which made her nod as she was handed to Tigress with a mischievous smile on her baby face. that face shook Po to his core as he and the bird left.
"never in my life would I have thought I would be scared of a baby... until now.." he muttered.
Crane just chuckled and shook his head.
