Note: There isn't much I can say about this chapter, other than the fact it's Bentley-centric. I don't even know how I feel about the little guy from time to time. Now that I've said that, I'm just going to let chapter six arrive.
Chapter 6: The Dream
Bentley could barely sleep, as his mind was still replaying the same scene over and over again: Lisa being grabbed by her rapist. Worse still, is that the guy was on the loose and would more than likely get away with what he did to Lisa. While most of the family was in utter shock, Bentley had took what happened to Lisa the hardest. Sure, they bickered every now and then, but she was his older sister, and he would never have dreamed for her to get violated and abused by some masked stranger. The young raccoon had some idea of how sex worked, but he decided to just let the birds and the bees go for now. Even if George and Nicole offered to explain how sex works, Bentley decided to wait until he was older, in spite of him being a child prodigy who skipped several grades.
After a few minutes, Bentley fell asleep and started to dream.
Bentley found himself all alone in a field under the night sky. There was no one else in sight, not even another creature. As he was the only living thing in the field, Bentley had no idea what to do. He just looked down, as if thinking about something.
"You failed her, didn't you?" A voice whispered.
Startled by this, Bentley looked around the field. No one was near him, not even his friends and family.
"Your sister was attacked," another voice spoke, "but you didn't try to save her."
"She just told me to go get Mom and Dad." Bentley defended himself.
"That didn't help." The first voice stated.
"What do you mean?!" Bentley spoke out in anger, "I had my parents call the police, didn't I?! If it wasn't for the police, who knows what the guy would have done to Lisa?!"
All of a sudden, there were what looked like blotches of black ink forming around Bentley. When he tried to run, one of the blotches grabbed his foot and started to pull him into it.
"Get off!" The young raccoon screamed.
A hand that looked like it was from Bert appeared out of nowhere. Bentley grabbed it, but the hand started to turn into the same stuff that he was sinking in. Looking up, Bentley saw that the hand belonged to a distorted version of Bert.
"Failure." The distorted Bert moaned.
"No! Let me go!" Bentley angrily screamed, "I'm not a failure! I couldn't do much to help Lisa, I really couldn't! That doesn't make me a horrible person for not doing my best to help! I have been working on my black belt, but not even I could take on a dangerous criminal! Please get off of me, I will do my best to help everyone, Lisa included!"
The black mass that was consuming Bentley ignored him. It seemed like this would be the end for him.
Waking up, Bentley saw that it was morning. However, he was up before anyone else. At least, no one had awoken, not even to wake him up when he was having his nightmare. With that in mind, he went back to sleep, hoping to get back up when George or Nicole came into the room.
Sorry Bert, Bentley thought to himself, but you're not the only one who's really concerned about Lisa. Even if you didn't have a dream where you were mocked for not being there to help, I am on your side. The family might be willing to comfort Lisa, but I'm willing to help you give the rapist what he deserves! If we have to form a vigilante group, so be it, we just need to find this guy and give him the proper karma a man like him needs!
Note: I know that I haven't shown Bert beating himself up, but I had him show some anger to portray him as the kind of friend who would sympathize with a rape victim instead of avoiding them or blaming them. Bentley is also becoming like that. Just because siblings bicker and argue doesn't mean that they would wish something horrible to happen to each other. What did you guys think about this chapter? Let me know when you leave a review or give a constructive criticism. Until next time guys, peace!
