It seemed to be clear and tranquil night in the ancient Greek countryside, although the inhumane growls emanating from the forest told otherwise.

Weaving through the dense trees was a brown-haired woman, with a child in her arms. The boy had vibrant sea green eyes, squeezed tightly closed in fear and a thick, messy mop of jet black hair. A few paces behind them but slowly closing in were two humongous hellhounds, their eyes blood red and their faces pulled back in ferocious snarls as they chased their pray.

Bursting from the treeline, the woman ran with all her might towards the coast, hoping and praying that the boy's father would be able to at least protect his son. They seemed to be out of luck though since the hellhounds, now unhindered from the natural objects the forest threw in their path, started quickly gaining ground, the boy's powerful scent luring them in and urging them to run faster towards their target. Said boy was clinging tightly to his mother, silent tears streaming down his face. Just as the hounds neared the two, the scent of the salty sea breeze hit them, indicating that that the sea was only a few hundred meters away.

Her feet had barely stepped on the soft sand when she felt the monster's foul stench wash over her, the hounds ready to pounce. She knew the number of her breaths were limited but she didn't slow down. She took one last glance at the boy in her arms and with a certainty and strength only a desperate mother could possess she threw her son towards the sea, every fibre of her being calling out to her former lover for help.

"Stay in the sea Percy, the sea will protect you", she shouted her parting words to her son just as she fell to the ground, sharp claws ripping at her clothes and skin and the monster's weight crushing the life out of her.

The boy, Perseus, was so distraught and traumatized by the death of his mother, that he did not notice as the sea solidified behind him into the shape of man. Instantly, two highly pressurized jets of water erupted from the sea and drilled a hole in the skulls of the hellhounds, the monsters howling as they disintegrated into mounds of golden dust.

The man who rose from the sea appeared to be of middle age, with unruly hair the colour of coal, a trimmed beard and swirling eyes the colour of the ocean during a storm, identical to those of his the boy standing before him.

"Forgive me Sally, I was not fast enough to save you" he uttered, his voice heavy with sorrow and regret as he took in the image of his lover's lifeless body on the sand. Then his eyes fell to the boy, who due to the shock of the events was only able to numbly stare back at his saviour for a few moments.

"Who are you?" Percy finally managed to croak out.

"My name is Poseidon and I am the god of the sea. I don't know what your mother has told you but I'm your father. I'm here to protect you, I'm sorry I was so late." the man responded. At the same time, the waves he commanded swept up the woman's body before carrying it into the depths of the sea.

"She will be given the final rites of the queen", Poseidon promised. Now, having suffered a great emotional toll from being hunted and the loss of his mother, Percy quickly rushed to the man supposed to be his father and hugged him before he was scooped up in the man's arms. He faintly recalled his mother's tales about his father, the great Lord Of The Sea. But up until this point, he had thought that these tales were only tales that were told to a fatherless child for the sake of comfort. Maybe, these tales were true after all.

The comforting smell of the sea as well as something distinctly warm and familiar engulfed Percy as he snuggled into the embrace. That gesture of kindness was all it took for the dam to break and the young orphan sobbed his heart out into his father's chest, the man just standing there, with the waves lapping his feet, holding his son tightly and rubbing soothing circles on his back. Eventually the heart-wrenching sobs quieted down to helpless whimpers as Percy cried himself to sleep, the only sounds coming from him being small rhythmic breaths.

"I won't fail you again Percy, I will do everything in my power to make sure you are happy, I promise." Poseidon declared with determination as he placed a kiss on his son's forehead. A wave rose engulfed them and when the waters settled once more, there was no sign of anyone on the beach, no indication of the horrors that took place just a few moments before.
