27th Christmas

"Oh god" Ianto said softly as he watched Maisey hold Hawk up so he could reach a little pudgy hand out for an ornament from the tree. He knew he had forgotten something. Looks like the Moo Cow was teaching the toddler the finer points of getting around the playpen surrounding the tree.

Of course, the kitten currently hiding in the tree also gave away the fact you can sort of get around anything if clever enough. "Bloody kitty cat!"

Hawk squealed his feet kicking as she swung him now, the little ornamental tree on the coffee table the first thing to go as Ianto gaped, then the table lamp by the sofa went too. Ton was there in no time, picking up the things that clearly were in the way of a good game and Ianto could only shake his head as Walter entered to the chaos with the kids, releasing them as you would mad dogs after a rabbit.

Ianto glanced again at the tree and knew Jack had been the one to hang the little wooden ornaments he carved himself. One for each child and the one for Jax was a cute little airplane, even as Hawk's was a little cat. Ianto looked at the others, amused that Ton's was a frog (of course) and everyone's animal or object suited them to a T, Ianto's the one that was most surprising of all.

You would expect it to be a coffee cup right? Or maybe a block of chocolate? ON … on the outside… maybe a rose. Nope. Not even a Tiger. Ianto's special ornament with his name carved on it was a heart. Jack's heart painted blue to show it was his. Ianto's name carved in it to show who that belonged to as well.

Ianto had taken a long time to find the right one for Jack, a long time to carve it and although it was not as artistic as those Jack had made it was nonetheless Jack's far ovate of all the ornaments on the tree.

Jack's was a ring. A never-ending circle of love. Carved into the inside of the band was IHJ hearts JHJ 4EVA and it was spray painted rose gold. Each child was represented by a little plastic gem on the band… it had taken Ianto a long time to create and sometimes he caught Jack standing there looking at it with wonder.

"May the circle be unbroken" Ianto had said when he had first placed it on the tree and now he watched as Hawk managed to hook a Santa off the table, shoving it into his mouth as Ton crooned, scolded and coddled all at the same time, this little one his too ya know.

As a proud one year old, Hawk was clearly the boss. With all these kids around him to control and manipulate he was clearly going to be a trial as he got older. Jax a willing accomplice.

Never mind.

Ianto loved his little chickadee.
