Chapter 10
Hey guys! Hope all of you are enjoying this story. I said in the previous chapter that I am going to reveal the potential pairing for this story, the pairing for this story will either be a Percy X Athena or a Percy X Calypso pairing. Now I know that these two pairings or not exactly that mainstream, but, I feel that these two are the pairings that have the potential for this story to be a satisfying romantic saga. Regardless of whichever pairing it finally is, both of them will have a role in Percy's life.
I would like to thank flyingzuzu14 for your continued support. I'm happy that you like this story.
Regarding jojo jesus' review, I know that Percy is a nickname which may have not existed in the Ancient Greece, but, the whole character himself never existed in Ancient Greece. So, I took a bit of creative freedom there to give Percy a distinction between him and the original Perseus, since they are only a few generations apart in this story. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this story!
Coming to SpartanBoi's review, I could answer your question, but where's the fun in that. I have a scene which will deal with this question in one of the upcoming chapters. But I'd like to thank you for your continuous support!
All credit for the characters goes exclusively to Rick Riordan.
It had been six years since Percy's training in hydrokinesis had started and now a twelve year old Percy was engaged in a face off against his father. His mastery in hydrokinesis was complete and today was the day his prowess in it would be tested. He would fight his father in a battle of currents and he would have to pass this test for his training in atmokinesis to begin.
Amphitrite, Triton and Chiron were at the stands, staring at the two of them in anticipation. A burst of energy from Triton's trident signaled the beginning of the match and Percy immediately went on the offensive. He sent two highly pressurised jets of water at his father who erected a wall of water to block the attack. Not wasting a breath, Percy followed up that attack by sending five large javelins of solidified water at Poseidon. In defense, Poseidon swirled the current around him and redirected the javelins back at Percy.
To avoid the attack, Percy shot off upwards in a geyser of water and then launched two large jets of water at his father. Poseidon met the attack with two water jets of his own and the impact of the clash blew everyone back by a few feet. In an instant, Poseidon sent a large current at Percy who used a dome of water to protect himself, but the force behind the attack slammed Percy into the wall of the arena.
Quickly realising that a drawn out fight would not end in his favour, Percy's eyes glowed and swirled as he commanded the water in the entire arena and with a yell, he directed hundreds of thousands of gallons of water at his father. Poseidon's eyes flashed like a violent sea storm as he called in all the power of his domain to stop the water.
Exhausted by this maneuver, Percy fell to a knee and immediately, Amphitrite was next to him. "Percy, you know your body cannot handle the physical strain of controlling that much water, what if you had hurt yourself." Amphitrite chastised.
"I'm sorry mother. I just wanted to see the extent of my power." Percy sheepishly replied.
"You are far stronger than what you believe son. It was only for a moment, but still, you forced me to call upon all my power to stop your attack. Son, you have mastered hydrokinesis and I have no doubt you'll master atmokinesis as well." Poseidon proudly stated with a wide grin. Even though Percy was extremely powerful, his mortal body limited Percy from fighting at his full potential. According to Styx, Percy would become partially immortal at twenty one years. Once he was partially immortal, his power and attributes would reveal themselves at full capacity.
"Your father is right Percy. You are very powerful but your lack of confidence slightly hinders you. To be an efficient fighter, you need to have confidence in your abilities or else your attacks may fall short." Chiron advised. Percy had already mastered the spear and the trident and with his current hydrokinetic prowess and his untouchable mastery over the sword, he was already stronger than many minor Gods, but he had potential for more.
"I know Chiron, but I just have this weird gut feeling that I'm not like Triton." Percy confessed.
"What do you mean by that Percy?" Amphitrite worriedly asked.
"I don't know why mother, I always have this nagging thought that I am not a God, I mean there would have been some manifestation of my domains by now if I really were a God." Percy conveyed in frustration.
"Don't worry Percy, eventually the answers will show themselves when the time is right, now go and clean up, we shall meet in the dining room for lunch in half an hour." Amphitrite dismissed his concerns and affectionately ruffled his hair. Percy smiled at them, before vanishing from the arena in a blue mist.
"He is starting question his heritage Amphitrite. He has to know the truth to let go of the reservations he has about himself. He cannot effectively train with such a low level of confidence, he has to believe in himself or else he be will hindered from unlocking his true potential." Poseidon told Amphitrite with a heavy voice. He had wanted to tell Percy the truth about his heritage many times over the past few years, but Amphitrite had vehemently opposed the idea every time.
"We will tell him once his training is complete and after he becomes partially immortal. Until then, I am not going to let my son think that he does not belong here." Amphitrite firmly retorted. Her younger son was a beautiful boy, he had a selfless heart and was motivated by a strong sense of duty. He was the perfect Prince and she did not want him to ever think otherwise.
"The longer we withhold this information from him, the more extreme his reaction will be when he finds out. Reconsider this carefully mother." Triton attempted to reason with his mother.
"I don't care if he hates me when he eventually finds out. I want to protect him from the harsh reality of realising the reason he was brought up in Atlantis. Yes, we did it for protecting him, but the Olympians didn't, they only wanted a loyal and heartless killing machine that they could use against her. My son is not a soldier and I will not have him thinking he is an expendable machine, a weapon honed for destruction." Amphitrite quickly and harshly rebuked Triton.
Before Poseidon could protest, Delphin interrupted them. "Forgive me, my lord. I do not mean to intrude, but I bring important news. Your daughter Kymopoleia has returned from the border station and seeks an audience with you."
The eyebrows of all the members of the Royal Family shot up in worry at this statement. It was no secret that the relationship between the Royal Family and Princess Kymopoleia was strained. She had been stationed at the border outpost that guarded the mine fields from the attackers originating from the seas beyond the Gods. It was after all a veiled form of exile for the violent actions she had committed over four hundred years ago.
"Tell her that we shall meet her in the throne room in a few minutes." Poseidon tightly responded. Delphin bowed and proceeded to head towards the Atlantean throne room.
"Chiron it will be a great help if you could manage to keep Percy occupied and away from the throne room" Amphitrite requested. Chiron nodded and galloped away.
"The news of his true heritage must have reached her. There cannot be any other reason for her to come here, not after we banished her." Triton spoke with certainty.
"Let us not speculate. Whatever her motives are, they shall become explicitly clear in a few minutes." Poseidon cut off the conversation and the three of them vanished from the arena after that statement.
Kymopoleia was livid with rage. Not only had her family banished her for four hundred years, they had the audacity to let a demigod bastard sit on the throne. She was here to confront them and that demigod bastard and she would take back her birthright.
Her attention was captured by the appearance of her family. "Father, Mother, Brother." She coldly greeted them.
"Why are you here Kymopoleia? You are not allowed to travel to other places while stationed at the border." Poseidon bluntly told her with a hard edge in his voice.
Kymopoleia let out a mirthless laugh and bitterly stated "Stationing? That may have been the official statement, but it is an open secret that have I been exiled to the border."
"Then you know that my patience is on thin ice. Why are you here daughter?" Poseidon asked as his eyes swirled.
"You know why I am here father. You banish me, a legitimate Princess to a lowly border station and you bring a demigod bastard to be raised in Atlantis. Upon that you have the audacity to name him second in line to the throne of Atlantis. You owe me an explanation." Kymopoleia demanded with barely restrained anger.
"Percy is a legitimate Prince Of Atlantis and you shall give him the respect he deserves Kymopoleia. If you do not heed this warning, you shall not like the consequences." Amphitrite warned.
"Consequences? What will you do mother? Exile me to the border station?" Kymopoleia haughtily taunted.
"Choose your next words wisely daughter. If you cross a line again, I will not be banishing you, I will imprison you in the deep trench for a thousand years." Poseidon threatened in a calm, yet, steely voice.
The smirk that spread on Kymopoleia's face unnerved all of them. Immediately, she vanished from the throne room in poisonous green mist. Triton was the first to realise where his sister was headed and frantically flashed out, hoping to reach the destination before his sister. Following his lead, even Poseidon and Amphitrite flashed out of the throne room. A feeling of dread gripping all of them as they realised what she wanted to do.
Percy was trying, and failing to learn archery from Chiron when suddenly, a burst of godly energy blasted Chiron into the arena's wall. Percy jumped to action, drew his sword and observed this attacker, he could sense the sea in her, but unlike the rest of his family, she had green skin and jellyfish tendrils for hair.
"Finally, we meet, Perseus, the bastard Prince of Atlantis." Kymopoleia addressed him with scorn.
The title shocked Percy and his mind swelled with a thousand different thoughts. Before Kymopoleia could say anything else she was knocked out with the brutal strike from the hilt of Triton's trident. But the damage had been done, there was the look of haunting realisation in Percy's eyes.
"I am not a God am I? I am not even your son." Percy brokenly whispered.
"Percy listen to me.." Amphitrite started but was interrupted when she was blown back by a large explosion of force. By the time she had regained her bearings, the only sign of Percy that was left was the blue mist in the spot where Percy had stood a few moments ago.
"No.." Amphitrite fell to her knees with tears streaming down her face.
The recent events had left everyone in a stupor, but Poseidon was the first to break out of it. "Triton bind her in celestial bronze chains and throw her into the forge dungeons. She will be severely punished for her actions. After that, ask Delphin to send out a message in the seas. Also, send word for Mavrus and ask him to come to the arena and treat Chiron."
Triton nodded and flashed out with his sister after shooting a murderous look at her limp body.
Poseidon knelt down, embraced and comforted Amphitrite as she sobbed. "His eyes were filled with so much grief Poseidon. That look of betrayal in his eyes was so painful to look at. We should have told him before, this is all my fault." Amphitrite coarsely whispered.
"Don't worry Amphitrite, he will return. He just needs some time to absorb this information. We will find him. I promise you." Poseidon soothingly said as he rubbed circles on her back to comfort her. In truth, even he was terrified of the potential consequences, but he had to put on a brave face, at least for the sake of his family.
Percy did not know what he was doing. He was filled with a feeling of betrayal and he had never felt so much pain in his life. He did not know why he vanished from the arena but he just felt so ashamed of his own heritage that he desperately wanted to get out of Atlantis.
The moment his sister, rather, half sister called him a bastard, he immediately realised why he was not like Triton. He was not a God, he would never be a God, he was only a lowly demigod on whom his father had taken pity and brought to Atlantis to keep him safe.
His thoughts drifted to his mother and he let out a bitter laugh. The woman who had given him all the love in the world was not even his mother. She had taken pity on a motherless child and in her infinite kindness, had taken on that role herself.
In an epiphany, he remembered a meeting with Lady Styx when he was a toddler and he remembered that she had introduced herself as his grandmother. He needed honest answers and right now it seemed like she was the only one who could provide them. So he desperately prayed to her and in a few seconds she materialised in front of him.
"Grandmother" Percy stated and respectfully bowed. Immediately Styx realised that he had come to know about his true heritage. She had forced herself to stay at a distance from her grandson because Poseidon had told her of Percy's obliviousness to his true heritage, she had not wanted to raise any unsolicited questions in him but now, it seemed like fate had played a cruel game on him. Styx stared at him with sympathy in her eyes, she could sense in the turmoil within him.
"Grandmother, you know the truth about my heritage, so please, tell me who am I? I need to know the truth." Percy pleaded.
She wanted to tell him that it was not her place to tell him the truth, but the look of helplessness in his eyes caused her to cave in. She explained his true heritage, the blessing of her river and the blessing of his paternal grandmother. But she refrained from telling him his role in the upcoming war. She would not be the one to deal him two hard blows without respite. Meanwhile, Percy was still as a stone as he processed his grandmother's revelation.
"Your parents are worried sick Percy. The sea is churning, responding to their emotions and I know you can feel it too. You must return to Atlantis." Styx softly told her grandson.
"She is not my mother. How much ever I wish she was, she isn't. I am no Prince either, I am just a bastard son of the sea god." Percy replied in a hollow voice.
"That is not true young man. Amphitrite may not have given birth to you, but, she loves you as much your birth mother did, when she sacrificed her life for the sake of yours. Now, come with me. We are going to Atlantis. You have to talk to your parents." Styx firmly told him. Percy wanted to retort at this, but before he could do that, Styx put a hand on his shoulder and teleported both of them to the Atlantean throne room.
Upon noticing the presence of Poseidon, Amphitrite and Triton, Percy immediately fell to one knee and deeply bowed "Lord Poseidon, Lady Amphitrite, Lord Triton." He respectfully addressed them. His sudden appearance and greeting shocked all three of them.
Triton was the first to break out of his stupor and violently backhanded Percy in anger. "What the hell is this Percy? You run away without any explanation when a stupid piece of moss tells you something that no one cares about and then you show up all of a sudden and act like you are a soldier of Atlantis. What the hell is wrong with you?" Triton angrily questioned Percy. He sometimes hated Percy's modesty and humility and he especially hated his brother's excessive obedience to those he was loyal to. He calmed down when he saw the resigned look in Percy's face. Triton felt guilty as his outburst, he was taking out his anger on the wrong person. His father held his shoulder and reined him in, to prevent another outburst.
Slowly, his mother bent down and gently cupped his brother's tear streaked cheek, who subconsciously leaned in at the warmth of his mother's touch.
"My son." Amphitrite warmly told him, pouring every bit of love and affection she had for him into those two words.
"Forgive me Percy. I thought I was protecting you from the truth, when in reality, I was just being selfish. I fell in love with you from the day you called me Mama and I did everything in my power to give you a life full of love, happiness and affection. I may have not given birth to you Percy, but you were, are and will always be my son. There is no doubt in that. You have my essence in you, you are a Prince of Atlantis and second in line to its throne. Never believe otherwise." Amphitrite soothingly, yet, firmly told him.
That statement flipped a switch deep within Percy and he immediately embraced his mother and sobbed his heart out on her shoulder. Amphitrite comfortingly rubbed his back like she used to, when he was a toddler. Her own eyes were glistening at the events that had unfolded. The two of them stayed in that position for a long time and the rest of the people in the room stood silently, waiting for Percy to regain his bearings.
Finally once Percy had composed himself, Poseidon addressed him "Percy there is something else that I need to tell you. Your grandmother would have probably explained the extent of your physical and elemental strength to you. For that reason, the Olympians want your help in the upcoming war. That is why your primary teacher was Chiron and not Bythos. We did not raise you in Atlantis for that reason, but we put on a show to deter Zeus and any other Olympians from harming you." He concluded. He did not want to keep any more secrets from Percy.
Percy nodded at him with determination "I will not let you all down father. I will fight the enemies of Olympus and Atlantis with all my strength." Percy fiercely declared.
"I have no doubt you will do that Percy. But always remember, you are a Prince, not a soldier. You may have a mortal soul, but that makes you even better than a god. I want you to always remember how much we love you. This will not be only your fight." Amphitrite told Percy.
"Yes Percy, you are better than the best of both worlds. Never be ashamed of your unique birth Percy, rather, announce it with pride. I have no doubt that you will make all of us proud. Your birth mother would have definitely been proud of you Percy. Honour her memory Percy. " Styx affectionately stated and teleported out of the throne room in a black mist.
"What about Kymopoleia?" Percy questioned.
Poseidon's eyes darkened at the mention of her name. "For her repeated transgressions, she will be imprisoned in the deep trench for a thousand years" Poseidon ruthlessly announced.
Percy shook his head at the declaration. "Her anger was not unjustified father. Let her return to the border station. She is family and family always deserves a second chance." Percy told his father with a small smile. Poseidon looked unsure for a second. Finally, he relented at the earnest look in Percy's eyes and ordered Delphin to bring Kymopoleia to the throne room.
As she was brought into the room, Kymopoleia had a defiant look in her eyes as she glared at her father and everyone else in the room.
"Kymopoleia, do you know the disastrous consequences your bitterness could have caused? Your actions could have directly put the second in line to the throne of Atlantis into danger. This is a capital punishment for mortals and a thousand years of imprisonment in the deep trench for immortals. I do not need to tell you the horrors that await you there." Poseidon harshly declared.
At this declaration, Kymopoleia's defiant glare faltered and a slight amount of fear crept into her eyes. She had heard the stories of how immortals imprisoned there chose to fade rather than endure the horrors that apparently stemmed from the primordial pit of damnation itself. Her breath hitched as she imagined the millennium of torment that awaited her.
"Yes, breathe in the fear Kymopoleia. Four hundred years ago, I had warned you to not let your domain control you but you did not listen to me. You may be the Goddess of Violent Sea Storms, but that does not give you the right to send hurricanes at mortals for your pleasure. It was your violent and sadistic nature which forced my hand and I exiled you to the border station for a thousand years, hoping that you would learn your lesson. But it seems that it was a false notion of mine to think that you would change. This time you have committed a much graver deed, you would have been thrown to the deep trench if it was not for Percy." Poseidon stoically said. Kymopoleia's eyes widened in surprise at this revelation.
"Yes Kymopoleia. The very Percy who should have been the biggest advocate of your punishment, asked for you to be pardoned. He has far more compassion and kindness than you will ever have. I have not thrown you into the deep trench only on his behest. However, I think you need to learn a lesson, for that reason, your period of exile will be extended by two hundred years. Upon that, I will not be sending you any provisions. You will have to fight, like a soldier and earn your food. This should humble you." Poseidon announced. Kymopoleia nodded her head in resigned and fearful acquiescence. Poseidon nodded at Delphin, who immediately took her away.
"Don't ever disappear on us again son. You disappearing was one of the worst experiences of my immortal life, right up there with being eaten by my wretched father." Poseidon told Percy once Kymopoleia was escorted out of the room. Percy promptly scrunched his nose in disgust at the mention of his grandfather.
"Now we never got to talk about your atmokenesis training." Poseidon stated with a twinkle in his eye.
"You mean…"Percy excitedly trailed off.
"Yes Percy. You have shown perfect mastery over your hydrokinetic abilities. Now it is time to make you a stormbringer." Poseidon told Percy with a lop sided grin. Percy responded with an identical one of his own.
"Absolutely not. Percy you are done doing anything for the day and Poseidon, if you even think of sneaking behind my back on this, you are forbidden from the bedroom for a month." Amphitrite strictly warned. Triton snickered at this before shutting up when his mother shot him a glare.
"Now that this matter has been dealt with, let us go have our lunch." Amphitrite declared with a triumphant smirk. Poseidon grumbled something about dominating women.
"Any problem dear?" Amphitrite questioned in a sickly sweet voice. Poseidon shook his head so many times, Percy wondered how it still stayed attached to his neck. Quietly, the three of them followed Amphitrite into the dining room.
(A few weeks later)
Percy was excited. His mother had forbade his father from training him in atmokinesis until he could reign his emotions in completely. She had not been wrong. Even after the reassurances of his mother, Percy had still been unsettled for a few days. Triton had noticed his discomfort and had taken him on one of his secret patrols.
While on patrol, Percy had been surprised from what he had heard from the locals. He had expected people to secretly sneer in disgust at his heritage, there were rumours about him, but they were not about his heritage, instead there were rumours about his invulnerability and multiple accounts of his kindness.
His self respect and confidence had soared after that incident and it's result could be seen in his combat prowess. His attacks were much faster and stronger. His stances were more efficient and energy conserving and thus even his endurance had increased. For these reasons, his mother had decided that he was emotionally stable enough to finally learn to summon storms.
Once he entered the arena, he was surprised by the presence of his mother in the arena along with his father.
"Hello Percy." His parents greeted him. He gave them a bright smile in return.
"Now you may be wondering why I am here." Amphitrite stated with a knowing smile. Percy nodded his head in confirmation.
"Son, before I started training you in your hydrokinetic abilities, I told you of the importance of not losing control of your emotions once you mastered hydrokinesis. Harnessing the power of the storms, is admittedly easier, yet the process itself is more complicated." Poseidon told him. Percy's face gained a quizzical look at the self contradictory nature of this statement.
"Let me explain more clearly Percy." Amphitrite stated after shooting a mild glare at a sheepish looking Poseidon.
"Percy, your ability to summon storms is very similar to your ability to control water. But your atmokinesis is far, far more dangerous than your hydrokinesis. Storms are the most dangerous aspect of the seas. While preventing negative emotions from taking over is very important to perform hydrokinesis with precision, it is absolutely essential when it comes to atmokinesis. If you are angry, the sea will respond similarly, but that is only when you are in the sea or near it. Storms on the other hand, will react to your emotions immediately, regardless of wherever you may be. You may have noticed that when your father is not in the seas, winds instantaneously pick up around him if he gets angry. Initially, when your father had just received his domains, whenever he got angry on land, a hurricane would surround him and batter his surroundings. It took him a hundred years to rein that problem. For that reason, while your father will teach you to harness the full power of the storms, I will teach you restraint." Amphitrite patiently explained.
"You mean it will take me a hundred years to effectively summon storms?" Percy asked in a dejected voice.
"No son. You have my blessing, that naturally bestows upon you restraint and calmness. With me and Poseidon teaching him, Triton took about four years to master his atmokinesis. Due to having more raw power and lesser restraint than Triton, I think you may take around a year more." Amphitrite guessed.
"Awesome! So what do we start with? Do you want me to try and swirl the winds around me like father does?" Percy excitedly asked.
"No Percy. You will start with meditation. Once you are able to completely keep your emotions in rein, then we shall begin with accumulation and dispersion of storm winds. Now sit down and try to clear your head of all thoughts." Amphitrite told him with a small, amused smile. Percy's face registered a look of disbelief and he looked at his father. To his misfortune, his father just grinned at him and gave him a thumbs up. He grumbled something before sitting down and trying to follow his mother's instructions.
Poseidon gave Amphitrite a discrete look and they walked to the end of the arena, to be out of Percy's earshot.
"What did you mean when you said he has more raw power and less restraint." Poseidon asked in confusion.
"Poseidon, Percy has more of your essence in him than mine. Even with my adoption and blessing, the blessing of the Styx augments your powers to a larger scale. For that reason, he may require more time than Triton to safely summon storms." Amphitrite clarified.
Poseidon nodded his head in affirmation. Percy's atmokinesis could be very dangerous if not controlled properly. He knew Percy would not harm others on purpose. But, it would not hurt to be safe and teaching Percy restraint while learning atmokinesis was admittedly, not a bad idea. It had worked with Triton, it would work with Percy.
Breaking out of his thoughts, he stifled his laughter at the sight of Percy's inability to sit still. This certainly would be an interesting experience. It seemed like life had returned to normalcy for the Atlantean Royal Family.
Hello! I know this chapter was not as fast paced as the previous one, but I wanted to bring out Percy's emotions and his abilities in detail.
I chose twelve years as the age for Percy to learn the truth about his heritage because I felt that he would be somewhat more mature, yet at the same time he would also be a bit emotionally unsure.
The increase in self respect and confidence due to external praise is a trait linked to early teen age. I wanted to show some uncertainty, silent obedience and other traits that you would normally see in a twelve year old, instead of just making him super confident and all powerful. He will get quippy, rebellious and sarcastic later on though. But I wanted to make him more human, instead of just making him an unstoppable killing machine right from the beginning. Also, Triton's outburst was to explore his thoughts and further highlight Percy's uncertainty in himself.
I keep referring that Percy is not a soldier but a Prince, this is because I wanted to show the differences between a warrior prince and a foot soldier. This is not meant to offend any soldiers as this is based on the mindset of Ancient Greek society.
Read and review, hope all of you enjoyed this chapter! Have a great day!
