CHAPTER THREE:
QUEEN OF THE FAE
Many Years Ago
MADALENA ADAIR, STARED at her father as he coughed on his death bed. "Father?" She whispered. "Will you be alright?"
As soon as he stops coughing, the man looks toward his only child. His eyes were hollowed, cheeks sunken and skin pale from the illness running through his veins. The large wings on his back held the gray and matched his beard. The beautiful feathers on the wings had begun to shrivel off, leaving sizeable bald spots on the feathered limbs. He no longer had the strength to bring them back into his body, allowing them to simply hang on his back. The wings themselves were also becoming heavy on him, but he would never tell that to Madalena.
He cleared his throat, "come here, Darling." He lay a hand forward, urging her to take it. She does, placing her hand on his as he guided her beside him on the bed. "Madalena, I do not have long."
"Father—"
"Please, Child, let me speak. We both know that my time has come where I can no longer live how I used to. I do not have the strength to rule any longer."
Madalena stared at her father, fear running through her veins. "Do you know how long?"
"They say two moons."
Her eyes widened, "two?" She whispered.
Her father could only nod at her question, knowing his daughter was full of fear. Once he was gone, she would have a lot on her plate. "Madalena, listen to me. When I am gone. The kingdom will require a new ruler."
"But who will take over when you are gone? You had no sons."
King Eren gives his daughter a look. "Madalena, as my blood, you will take my place."
Madalena laughed at that, "I am a woman. Men will not take kindly to me on the throne."
"And they will suffer greatly for it."
She presses her lips together, looking at her father's face filled with determination.
He places his hand on her head and runs it down her hair, "My daughter, you have been my greatest achievement since you were born 500 years ago. Your mother would have been proud of who you've become."
Her lips quivered and her eyes teared up. She grabs his hand by the wrist and places his hand on her cheek, "I'll miss you."
"I will always be with you."
Her father passed away before the second moon was reached and Madalena was heartbroken. For the amount of time it took her father to pass away, Madalena stayed by his grave. Thoughts flowed through her mind as she stared at the words written on the stone. She was meant to be queen now and she would have to have her coronation as soon as possible. Until then, the council would be handling any situations concerning the kingdom. Madalena had a deep hatred for the men, for they thought themselves better than those lower than them. But for now, she would let them be.
She stood up and brushed the sand off her dress. Looking up at the sky, she allowed her wings to pull themselves from her back. The large black feathered limbs flapped once before she jumped, soaring off into the sky.
As a child, her parents never allowed her to leave the castle. For her safety, of course. The only moments she was allowed to explore the outside was if she had a guard with her at all times. But now, now that she was to be queen, she could go wherever she wanted.
She flew through the forest with speed, the trees shielding her from any prying eyes. Once she saw the end of the forest, she flew up and out of the trees. She became one with the sky and the ocean below her, closing her eyes and feeling the wind blow through her hair.
But then she felt a sharp pain on her left side. Her face scrunched up and she glanced down, placing a hand on her pained side. When she removed her shaking hand, her palm was covered in blood. One second passed and the pain became overbearing. Steel. She gasped and her wings stopped working. She was a cocoon of wings as she torpedoed into the ocean below her.
The last thing she saw within her water prison was a figure reaching for her. She held out her hand before her vision became tunneled by darkness.
