Calypso woke up to the noise of a hammer striking a plank. She was still a bit conflicted as the talk with Percy last night had been an emotional rollercoaster. When he had held her hand and had promised to provide her companionship, a feeling of warmth had blossomed in her chest but, she had mercilessly forced it down due to her own fear.
The countless heartbreaks had scarred her emotionally and she could not afford to get close to him just to have her heart torn to shreds once again. That would be an ordeal from which she would never be able to bounce back. So, she had shunned him. Her thoughts were interrupted by another loud thud and she ventured out of her room.
When Calypso came out of her room, she was not expecting to see Percy in the middle of building a new roofed patio in the place where her dining pavilion had once been situated. Large planks of cyprus tree wood were neatly stacked near the structure and Perseus was hammering one of the large wooden pillars that supported the roof of the patio.
Once he finished hammering the pillar, she saw a chisel materialise in his hand and he patiently started engraving different designs on the pillar. She wanted to say something, but she finally decided against it. Instead, she settled at watching him work with patience and a silent determination.
A few minutes later, Percy finished engraving the entire pillar and when he turned, he was met with a pair of dark almond shaped eyes staring at him with admiration.
"Good morning Calypso! I am sorry if I interrupted your sleep with all the noise." Percy greeted her, apologizing with a sheepish smile.
"It's alright Percy, I usually wake up around this time anyway. However, I am curious about why are you building a patio? Also, where is my old dining table?" Calypso brushed aside his concern and then questioned him. At her question, Percy looked away and whistled.
"Uhh, I kind of broke the table after our talk yesterday. I'm really sorry, I did not mean to break it on purpose. After you left, I got a bit worked up and in a moment of frustration, I slammed my fist on the table and it split into two." Percy sheepishly explained.
He quickly continued before she had a chance to interrupt him. "To make up for that, I decided to build a new dining table. After building the table, I noticed that even the rest of your furniture had been worn out. I had time and energy to spare, so I decided to build a new patio in order to replace the older pavilion."
"You didn't need to do that Percy. My servants would have taken care of it." Calypso softly replied.
"Yes, I didn't need to. But I wanted to. You have nursed me back to health and have been a very gracious host. This is my way of showing my gratitude." Percy replied with a wide smile. Calypso just stared into his swirling sea green eyes. Finally, after some time, she spoke up.
"Do you require any assistance Percy?" Calypso politely asked.
"Don't worry about this. I will finish the patio in another hour or so." Percy reassured before getting back to work.
Calypso couldn't help but feel drawn to him as she headed towards her garden to tend to her flowers.
This routine continued over the next month and Percy had replaced all the old and decaying structures that were on the island with new and beautiful ones. In this time, he and Calypso had gradually gotten closer and slowly, Calypso's walls were starting to break down as she was slowly falling in love with the young prince.
It was night and, as usual, Percy and Calypso were having dinner. They were seated in a special pavilion that Percy had built on the pristine beach of Ogygia. It was a beautiful pavilion with a roof made of tinted glass that lighted up the entire space when struck by moonlight. In the table, Percy had engraved all the flowers in Calypso's garden. Percy had also dug up a small moat around the pavilion and with the turquoise water brightly shining in it, Calypso felt as though she was situated on a little island.
Calypso had been frozen with awe when she had first seen the structure. Percy had redecorated her island in such a simple, yet regal and enthralling manner. She could not fathom how a person as powerful and as strong as him could be this humble and down-to-earth.
Once dinner was done, Calypso clapped her hands and instantly, the plates disappeared from the table. However, instead of leaving, Calypso decided that she wanted to talk to the endearing man sitting in front of her.
"I have to tell you Percy, if I had not seen you personally build all this, I would have thought that it was Hephaestus who had built these structures. I never knew that you such a talented builder." Calypso complimented him with a warm smile.
"You aren't the only one. Let's just say that my other skills haven't received as much marketing as my combat skills." Percy replied in a light-hearted tone and Calypso softly chuckled in response.
"Seriously Percy, where did you learn all this? You build, you engrave, you sculpt - you even know how to paint glass. What else can you do?" Calypso questioned him with a slight admiration in her eyes.
"I learnt all these skills from my mother, Chiron and Aphros. All three of them, especially my mother, were adamant that I should master skills other than weaponry and battle strategy. However, due to the ongoing war, until now, I never had time to do anything other than hunt, plan and fight. When I was not doing any of those, I was either unconscious or I was training." Percy replied with faraway look in his eyes.
A sad look made its way onto Calypso's face as at the mention of the war, she was reminded that he would eventually leave her.
"You miss them." Calypso stated. Percy seemed startled at the randomness of the statement but nevertheless he nodded in affirmation.
"I do miss them, though I am not too worried about that. The fates have willed that I should stay here for some time and me worrying is not going to change anything. Yes, I was a bit restless in the beginning but now, I am starting to enjoy my time here. After all, I have such wonderful company." Percy commented and then stated with a wide smirk. Calypso couldn't help but smile back at him.
A comforting silence enveloped them as they gazed at the slow and steady movement of the sea. They sat there in content for some time before Percy finally spoke up.
"Good night Calypso. As usual, dining with you has been a pleasure." Percy stated with a gracious smile.
"Good night Percy and, the pleasure was all mine." Calypso replied with a kind smile. Percy then nodded at her, got up and headed towards his room.
On the other hand, Calypso decided to stay back and sort out some of her feelings. She had thoroughly enjoyed his company and after a lot of thinking, she finally decided to let go of all her reservations. He had been nothing but kind and gracious to her. As she headed back to her room, it was the first time in a very, very long time that Calypso eagerly looked forward for the next day.
It had been a wonderful two months for Percy. Ever since their breakthrough conversation, he had slowly developed a very close relationship with Calypso and he was enjoying every minute of it. Her unmatchable compassion, innate kindness and mesmerizing personality had drawn him to her like a moth to a flame.
Even his training had gradually reduced. Now, he only trained for two hours a day. He spent the rest of his time painting the structures that he had built and most importantly, in Calypso's company. Sometimes, they would talk; she would tell him her previous experiences with the Titans and, in exchange, he would exchange his own stories and would share with her other advancements, mortal and divine.
Other times, the two of them would just sit next to each other in silence and gaze at the sea or at the stars. Right now, they were laying side by side on the roof of his room. He could smell the scent of cinnamon wafting from her caramel coloured hair and it gave him a sense of comfort and peace.
Percy realised that he loved her. He could not deny it any longer and there was nothing that could hold him back from confessing his feelings to Calypso. Little did he know that the same train of thought was running in Calypso's head.
Calypso was deeply in love with the tall man next to her. The past month with him had been one of the best experiences of her long divine life. He had provided her with so much companionship and care that it had brought down all her walls.
She had never thought that the prince of Atlantis could be so cheerful. All the information about him that her servants had gathered for her had initially given her the impression that he would be an honourable, but high-strung and gruff man.
Over the past two months, she had seen a different man. While he was very honourable, he was also very optimistic and lovable. His very presence radiated a sense of warmth and safety that reminded her of the familiarity of a salty sea breeze. His aura gave a subtle vibe of protectiveness whenever he was near her, which had sucked her in even deeper. Her thoughts were interrupted by Percy's voice.
"Calypso, I wanted to tell you something." Percy suddenly stated before sitting up. She followed his lead and nodded at him with a small smile in order to convey her assent. Her heart skipped a beat when he reached out, took her hand and held it in between his two hands.
"Calypso, I have a confession to make. Over the past two months, I have fallen deeply in love with you. The time that we have spent together has given me so much happiness that I can't put it into words. Your magnetic personality makes me want to be a better person and being with you gives me a sense of fulfilment that I've never had before in my life." Percy sincerely stated while unblinkingly staring into Calypso's eyes.
Calypso was left speechless as a warm feeling blossomed in her entire body. All her fears were pushed away as she was not able to put her joy into words. As she stared into his loving and earnest sea green eyes, she wanted to find a way to convey her love for him in the same way. Without warning, she leaned forward and kissed him.
He seemed shocked for a moment before his arms came around her and he pulled her into a loving embrace and, in response, she ran her hand through his silky black hair.
After that moment of passion, Percy rested his forehead against her forehead and their eyes were closed in bliss. The two of them stayed there in that intimate position for a while, neither of them wanting to say anything as their actions explicitly conveyed all the feelings that they had for each other. This moment of affection was broken by Percy's jubilant voice.
"I'll take that as a sign of reciprocation." Percy stated with a playful smirk. Calypso just smirked back at him before her face turned serious.
"Percy, how will this work out, there are so many things to consider, we haven't even- " Calypso started but she was cut off when Percy pressed his lips against her own. Once they parted, Percy lovingly stared into her eyes.
"I love you Calypso and I mean it. We will find a way to work things out but not now. We will talk about them tomorrow. Tonight, I just want to be with you." Percy determinedly promised and in response, Calypso just leaned into his chest and placed her head near his heart.
The scent of the sea and the rhythmic contractions and relaxation of his steady heart gave her a feeling of warmth and security.
Calypso trusted him. If he said that he would find a way to make it work, then he would follow through with it.
Percy placed his chin on top of her head as he felt a feeling of love spread through him. It was the first time in his life that he was experiencing such a feeling and he was inexplicably content with his life.
The moon shined brilliantly upon the pair of embracing lovers. It was as if Selene herself was conveying her approval.
Percy woke up to a mess of caramel coloured hair sprawled on his chest and a wide smile of happiness broke out on his face. He gently wrapped his arms around Calypso and pulled her closer as she stayed there, unmoving. He did not want to ruin this moment.
After some time, he felt Calypso stir so he greeted her with a smile "Good morning Calypso."
"Good morning Percy." Calypso greeted back without looking at him. She was so comfortable with him that she didn't feel like waking up. She gave a sigh of disappointment when he got up.
"I am sorry, but we need to get up. We still have to discuss a lot of things." Percy apologetically stated. Instantly, anxiety gripped Calypso's heart, though she put on a calm front and nodded at him. Together, they would deal with whatever problems that came in their way.
Breakfast was a peaceful event. Percy and Calypso had a few light-hearted conversations over a myriad of different topics and once breakfast was over and Calypso's invisible servants had taken away all the plates, Percy's face turned serious as he addressed Calypso.
"Last night, I promised that I would answer any questions that you might have and assuage all your fears. So, tell me Calypso, what is it that you want to know?" Percy calmly asked.
"How will this even last Percy? The fates have been kind enough to not send the raft until now but, eventually they will send it. What will you do then?" Calypso questioned him with an intense stare.
"I have thought about this in detail, Calypso, and I have found a way around it. If the raft shows up, I must go, I cannot turn my back on my family, but my position in the divine world can help me come back here. The gods visit you once in a while, right? So once this war is over, as my reward for helping them, I will request the Olympians to let me visit Ogygia whenever I want." Percy explained his plan with a wide smile on his face.
The radiant smile that spread out on Calypso's face put even Selene to shame. When she had responded to his feelings yesterday, she had still been afraid. The possibility of losing him had been gnawing at her ever since then but she had pushed it away. For that reason, she had accepted her fate and had wanted to make the best of this wonderful experience. But now, she didn't need to worry about that.
Finally, she had met someone who had proved to be a tangent to her never-ending cycle of heartbreak. She could not put her happiness into words. So instead, she lunged at him and pulled him into a deep kiss.
Percy responded with the same intensity and when they broke apart, the unbridled hope in her eyes stirred up another wave of protectiveness within him. In that moment, he made a promise to himself that he would do everything in his power in order to conserve that hope.
It had been a blissful time for Calypso and Percy. They had grown to be inseparable over the past year and this had been one of the greatest experiences of both their lives.
For Calypso, Percy had become the pillar on which she stood. He had showered her with so much unconditional love and affection that it was even causing some of her previous scars to slowly fade away. He had always been there for her, yet he had also given her the space that she required in order to be comfortable. However, he was not without his flaws.
She knew all about his fatal flaw and knew of the ruthlessness that he was capable of expressing. But, she also knew though that he always had the best intentions in his heart and was selfless and altruistic to a fault. Most of all, he was willing to acknowledge his shortcomings rather than arrogantly brush them aside. It was for that reason that, at least to her, he was the epitome of perfection. On the other side of the table, similar thoughts were running through Percy's mind.
Ironically, for Percy, this divine relationship had made him more human. In the past year, he had not fought any battle and that had given him time to introspect over his previous actions.
He had eventually come to a realisation that, if it weren't for his relationship with Calypso, his fatal flaw would have gradually consumed him. While he didn't regret any of his actions, he had accepted that some of them were morally questionable and he had decided that he would actively prevent himself from engaging in excessive and unnecessary brutality.
Also, the lack of conflict had allowed him to evolve past his warrior persona. Ever since he had found out that one of the reasons for him being brought up by his parents was his potential to be a major thorn in the Gaia's side, he had whole-heartedly accepted that responsibility.
He had constantly trained and had dedicated his entire life for the sole purpose of aiding the gods in this war. Until he had landed on Ogygia and experienced this life, he had been blind to the brutality of his own actions which he had been committing for the sake of the gods. Now he had learned to control himself better and he had Calypso to thank for that.
While he was still fiercely loyal to the gods and the determination to defeat the Earth Mother and her forces still burned bright, he had learned to be more than just a loyal soldier.
Calypso had brought out the painter, the engraver, the weaver, the builder, the lover and, surprisingly, even the gardener out of him. While he had always been a very pragmatic man, Calypso had taught him to apply that pragmatism in fields other than combat.
His time with her had taught him to take a calmer and a more multi-dimensional approach to life. In short, the past year had changed Percy's life for the better in many ways, it had redefined his ideals. A deep exhale from Calypso broke him out of his musing.
When Percy turned towards her, he saw that a cold breeze had swept across the beach. So, with the hand that was intertwined with her hand, he gently pulled her into a warm embrace with his arms wrapped around her. He knew that the cold wouldn't affect her, yet, it was an instinctive action.
In response, Calypso leaned deeper into his chest and hummed in happiness. Things had never been better for the two of them and it seemed that nothing could come in between them.
(Six Months Later)
Percy was peacefully sleeping next to Calypso when he found himself on the foot of Mount Olympus. He looked confused until he saw more than a dozen gigantes standing twenty feet in front of him.
He heard a loud roar from behind him and when he turned, he saw that all the major gods bar Athena and Ares had rallied to fight their banes. A moment later, the ground split open and he saw a beautiful woman adorned in a flowing green dress and with curly black hair emerge from it.
A shiver went down his spine when he saw the dreamy, yet, ruthless smile and with horror, he realised that the Earth Mother had awakened.
The gods charged at the Earth Mother and her children. But their effort was futile as with a flick of Gaia's hand, a hole opened up beneath them and all of them were swallowed by the earth. Percy bellowed and in despair he fell to his knees. That was when the scene shifted.
This time, Percy found himself on a barren land that was filled with skeletons. Instantly, the Earth Mother materialised in front of him and two large earthen pillars slammed into him. He groaned as he fell to his knees for the second time.
"What is the matter son of Poseidon? Did you think that you would be free from my clutches if you escaped to Ogygia? Where is your determination great grandson? Why don't I show you what I did to the rest of your family members in your absence?" Gaia started with sadistic smirk
With a wave it her hand, the image of the profusely bleeding and painfully shackled forms of his family members materialised in front of him. Percy wailed in despair as he had been rendered helpless.
"I promised to break your spirit, son of Poseidon, and I followed through with that promise. Once you realised that you could not fight me, you turned your back on the rest of your family and ran with your tail between your legs. How pathetic." Gaia mocked him with a cruel laugh, but Percy could not find the will to respond.
Before Gaia could say anything else, she screamed in pain as the entire dream dissolved and a panting and wailing Percy found himself in the arms of an extremely worried Calypso.
"Calm down Percy. It's just a nightmare, nothing happened." Calypso reassured Percy while gently stroking his hair. He desperately grabbed Calypso's arms.
"They lost, Calypso. She captured them. I am a traitor. She won. Gaia won." Percy frantically choked out.
"Shh Percy. It's just a nightmare, all of them are fine. She has not won and will not win. Now go back to sleep darling" Calypso softly placed a kiss on his forehead and soothed him.
Percy burrowed deeper into her loving embrace and Calypso sang a melodious song to comfort him. Percy's breaths gradually became quieter and after some time, he fell asleep.
Calypso let out a sigh of relief when Percy finally fell asleep. She was extremely worried about Percy's reaction to this event. She had sensed that her grandmother had intruded into Percy's mind and had immediately banished her essence from Ogygia. But the damage had been done.
Watching Percy lose himself in his emotional trauma had been a very painful and gut-wrenching experience. She warmly held Percy in her arms in order to provide him with every bit of love and protection that he had given her in the past year and a half. With these thoughts, Calypso slowly drifted into the realm of Morpheus.
Percy leveled another Cyprus tree with his bare hands as he tried to get the disturbing thoughts and images out of his head. The nightmare had really done a number on him. Even though it was just a nightmare, the experience had felt so painfully real.
He had enjoyed the previous year and a half that he had spent with Calypso. Her loving companionship, the simplicity of his life on Ogygia and the lack of conflict had caused him to tune out the ongoing war.
He had gradually stopped worrying about the war and instead of looking for new avenues for trying to get back to Olympus, he had conveniently stayed put and had left that job to the fates. Even his training had reduced as he had settled for a normal life with the woman he loved.
Percy had changed drastically over his time on the island. He was not the same man anymore. He had turned from a fiercely loyal soldier driven by ruthlessness to a more peaceful and in a way, a more selfish man. But in his opinion, he had every right to be selfish.
Chiron had been right. He had taken too much responsibility upon his shoulders and that had caused him to be almost overwhelmed by his fatal flaw. He had taken up the crushing responsibility of standing up against a protogenos and in the process, he had been brutally broken and then put back together not once but twice. Now, he was finally content.
Free of conflict and full of peace, to him, this was a life that he never had the luxury of living and this had grown to be his version of an ideal life. While he had lived an excellent life on Atlantis, it had always been driven by a sense of conflict. His mother had tried her best to make sure that he would not become a mindless soldier, though she had almost failed as unfortunately, up until now, he had lived the life of a loyal warrior.
He had always put his life on the line for the sake of his family and had ruthlessly charged headfirst into every battle of this war. He had allowed his life to be consumed by this war. To make matters worse, his complete physical invulnerability had made him even more ruthless as it had instilled a sense of unstoppable fearlessness in him.
Until now, he had never questioned the life that had given to him. But now that he had lived a different and, in his opinion, a better life, he was desperately clinging to it. Sadly, this could not continue.
The nightmare had been a wakeup call. He realised that his days of gardening and engraving were over. He was the Champion of Atlantis and the gods were his family. He would not turn his back on them. With these troubling thoughts on his mind, Percy restarted his rigorous training.
Calypso was extremely worried. Percy had been following a harsh training regime for over a week. Ever since his dreadful nightmare, Percy had become cold and aloof. Even in the few times that he relaxed, he seemed guilty for some reason.
Initially, she had not been too worried as by now, she knew every aspect and manifestation of his fatal flaw. That knowledge had prompted her to give him the distance that he wanted until he could regain control of his emotions. But as the week passed by, she had realised that he would slip deeper into his fatal flaw if she did not do something about it and she had no intention to let him tread down that path once again.
So, she was on her way to talk to him and hopefully, bring him out of his cold-blooded determination.
Percy was in the middle of coming up with a new attack when the sound of Calypso clearing her throat reached him. He immediately turned and greeted her with a polite yet, hesitant smile. "Hello Calypso."
"Hello Percy. If you are free, I was hoping to talk to you about your nightmare." Calypso greeted back and then stated. Instantly Percy's face hardened as the images started filling his head.
"I would rather not talk about it." Percy quietly replied. Before he could say anything else, he felt Calypso's hand on his arm.
"Percy, I know that the nightmare was not a pleasant experience for you but, you cannot let a dream affect you to this extent. This is what the Earth Mother wants. She wants you to tread down that dark path, but you cannot let that happen." Calypso softly stated. Percy sighed in frustration.
"I know Calypso. It's just, the time I have spent with you has been the best experience of my life and I feel guilty for enjoying such a life while the rest of my family is fighting a gruelling war." Percy confessed without meeting her eyes.
"Percy, listen to me: it is not a crime to be happy. I know that your sense of responsibility runs deep but you cannot feel guilty about having a good time. You are entitled to being happy. You don't need to live your life only for the sake of others." Calypso gently yet, firmly stated.
"You are right. But this is not the time for me to be selfish. My family needs me." Percy finally declared.
"You have not deserted them Percy. This is an event that is not in your control. Worrying about this is not going to accomplish anything other than mentally destabilizing you." Calypso admonished.
A long silence enveloped them as Percy absorbed and pondered upon the truth in Calypso's statement. Finally, Calypso's words got through to him as he realised that she was right. He could not afford to get lost in his own determination once again.
"Thank you for that talk Calypso. I needed that." Percy responded with a grateful smile.
"I will always be there for you Percy. Now, shall we have dinner?" Calypso declared with a sincere smile and then questioned. When Percy nodded in approval, the two of them left for the pavilion on the beach with identical smiles on their faces.
Percy had spent the past six months training and in trying to make the most of his time with Calypso. He had sadly come to realise that his days on the island were numbered and he had been waiting for the raft that would take him back to Olympus.
If the Earth Mother had regained enough energy in order to invade his mind six months ago, by now, she would have definitely regained enough energy in order to passively interfere in the war. As far as he knew, the fates were siding with the gods. So, they would not keep him here for too long and let Gaia get an advantage against them.
Plus, the situation had been grim on Olympus when he had left, so he could only assume that it had worsened by now. He was not too worried about spending two years on Ogygia as Calypso had reassured him on multiple occasions that time passed differently on Ogygia
He had also deduced that if the fates had let him stay here for this long, it meant that a considerably lesser amount of time must have passed on Olympus. His thoughts were interrupted when a flash of light caught his attention and he turned to the direction of it in an effort to find its source.
Once he got a proper look at it, Percy realised that the raft had materialised in the sea. But before he could think about this recent development any further, another bright flash of light caused him to look away. When the light dissipated, he could not believe the sight in front of his eyes.
Sitting on three identical chairs and with three identical neutral looks directed at him were the three fates and a bead of sweat dropped from his temple as he tried to comprehend the purpose of this visit.
Hey guys! First of all, I know that this chapter may seem to be focusing way too much on romance but, I felt like this a good way to incorporate a change after the constant conflict of the past eight chapters. So I decided to make Percy and Calypso the centerpieces of this entire chapter. I did this to incorporate some positivity into this story and break the cycle of violence.
As you would have noticed, I have used this entire chapter to shift Percy's personality. I have given extensive details about the evolution of Percy's character because it's really really important for the future of this story as well as the next two. It may feel like a bit of a drag but I seriously cannot overstate the importance of this chapter and the next chapter. They are actually going to be the foundation for the rest of Percy's character development in this story.
Also, I gave Percy's relationship with Calypso a duration of two years because I wanted to develop the relationship in detail and I wanted to show how this positively affected both Percy and Calypso. I felt that I could not have given it justice in only one chapter. That's the reason I decided to split it in between three chapters.
Also, I hope that all of you liked the final cliffhanger. I wanted to do something different and this felt like a good surprise.
I need to inform all of you about another development. I really like this pairing and I have written Percy's and Calypso's relationship as authentically as possible, if I could use that word. This is also one of my two favorite pairings so, I have not yet completely ruled out the possibility of making this a Percy X Calypso story.
However, before all you Percy X Calypso fans get your hopes too high, I want to warn you that this has a very low chance of happening. Right now, I am having a debate over either making this an arc of character development or making this the official romance of this story. I prefer the former due to reasons that all of you already know but, I am also a very big fan of the latter. Whatever it is, it will become clear in the next chapter. So stay tuned!
