SUMMARY: Katsuki finally meets another hero-in-training at the agency and the guy's an annoying ball of joy. It's the start of a friendship between him and a certain winged hero.
A/N: Updates here will be slower than on AO3 because is glitchy as hell for some friggin reason.
THE NEWBIE AND HIS WINGED PAL
It has been three weeks, nearly a month since he was recruited by the Hero Public Safety Commission or HPSC in short. He's adjusted well to his new schedule, impressing the HPSC agents. He's the current youngest hero in training in the agency. Katsuki couldn't help but be so proud of himself when the agents and the heroes praised him for his amazing ability to adapt and learn quickly. Yeah, some of the moves weren't perfected yet but he was told they expected that it would take him longer to learn these skills.
He destroyed another drone with an explosion and landed in a crouch, a wide crazed grin adorned his small chubby face, "Hah! That all you got?!"
"That's it for today Bakugou-kun," said a voice over the intercom.
"What?! No! I want more! I'm not tired yet!" said the small boy indignantly.
Kitamura's voice was heard over the intercom, "Well I'm afraid your time is up. We have to keep our end of the deal with your parents. Time to clean up and go home, kid."
Katsuki growled as he stomped toward the door. No, he's not pouting. He wiped the back of his hand over his mouth and sniffed. And no, he's not going cry because he's not a baby! Not like Izuku! He squawked when a towel was thrown over his head. He grabbed at it angrily and was about to yell at the person who did it but his voice was caught in his throat when he was face to face with someone he had never seen before.
The teenager had feathery ash blond hair with thick brows. What caught his attention was the pair of red wings on the teen's back. The teenager grinned down at him, "So you're the newbie, huh?"
Katsuki glared at him warily, "Who the fuck are you?"
"Wow, mind the tongue kiddo!" said the teenager with a chuckle as he reached down and ruffled the boy's already messy hair.
Katsuki let out a yelp and then jumped away from him, "Don't touch me! I'll blow your face off!"
The weirdo laughed, "I'd like to see you try, shrimp!"
Katsuki let out a roar and shove a hand forward, hands sparking. His eyes widened when the teenager vanished from his sight. Suddenly, he was upside down. The teenager was holding one of his foot and they were flying off the floor, "What the- put me down you bastard!"
The teenager tutted and wagged a finger, "Gotta ask Kitamura-san to put you in behavioural therapy. You can't be a hero with that attitude and that mouth!"
Katsuki was seeing red, his teeth grinding together as he clenched his jaw. His hands sparked and there was an explosion. The teenager nearly lost his grip on the kid when Katsuki's other free foot hit him in the chest, "Hey!"
There was another explosion, larger than before, and the teenager had the air knocked out of him as the little ball of fury slammed into his chest. He lost his grip on Katsuki and he watched the boy's eyes widened as he fell, "Shit!"
Katsuki had his eyes shut tightly as he free fall, he briefly wondered if he could slow his descent with an explosion. He felt something snagged him in the air and he was then lowered to the floor. Katsuki stood on shaky legs, clearly shaken. The winged teenager landed in front of him, face pulled in a grimace, "Oof! Sorry, kid."
He yelped when the boy gave his arm a swift punch, "Ow! Okay, I deserve that!"
"Hawks, stop teasing him," said Kitamura exasperatedly.
Hawks grinned as he rubbed the back of his neck, "Hey-yo! Kitamura-san!"
The man sighed, "Katsuki, this is Hawks. Hawks, this is Bakugou Katsuki."
"Nice to finally meet ya, kiddo!" said Hawks cheerfully as he offered a hand.
Katsuki stared at his hand as if offended. He scoffed and reluctantly took it in his, "Feeling's not mutual."
Hawks put a hand on his chest, "Ouch!"
Kitamura tossed a bottle of water to Katsuki who caught it with ease, "Alright kid, get cleaned up and Hawks here's going to escort you home today."
Katsuki was glad he swallowed the water before he sputtered, "W-what? No, I don't need him to escort me home!"
"Aww why not?" said Hawks with a slight pout.
"Y-you're annoying!" said Katsuki as he glared at the teenager.
Hawks grinned and pinched his cheeks, "Well, you're adorable!"
Katsuki slapped his hand away and snarled, "Don't touch me!"
"You remind me of a street cat," said Hawks distractedly as he tapped at his chin.
Kitamura gave Katsuki a nudge toward the exit, "Alright kid, get a move on or you're gonna be late. You know what your mother's like if you're late again."
Katsuki grumbled as he stomped toward the shower room. The agent sighed and scratched his head. He turned to Hawks when the teenager chuckled, "Kid's a spitfire! I like him!"
"And he's got quite a temper. I might take up your suggestion and send him for behavioural therapy."
Hawks laughed, "Well, good luck bringing that up to the kid! He's not going to be happy about it!"
Kitamura sighed and his shoulder sagged. He pulled himself together, "So how was your mission?"
The teenager beamed and gave him a pair of thumbs up, "Easy! I just swooped in and took the package without anyone noticing!"
"Have you reported to Ichikawa-san?"
"Yeap! He said I can take the weekend off! Hey, do you know if Katsuki plays video games?"
"Why don't you ask the kid yourself?"
Hawks wondered who Katsuki looked after as they neared the kid's house. The boy had been ignoring him during their walk and Hawks was left talking by himself. He doesn't mind though; he just has a lot of things in his mind and sometimes talking things out loud helped him sort his thoughts. He heard the boy let out a loud sigh, "Do you ever shut up?"
"When I need to be quiet, yeah! Oh! Do you play video games?"
Katsuki glanced at him over his shoulder, "Yeah, what kid doesn't?"
"Cool! I'm free this weekend! Wanna play some games?!"
Katsuki rolled his eyes, "Don't you have friends around your age to play with?"
"Nope!" said Hawks without missing a beat.
Katsuki stopped walking. Hawks stopped as well, wondering what made the kid stop in the first place. The boy turned to him, his red eyes studying him and Hawks tilted his head in confusion. The boy sighed, "You're a hopeless loser, you know that?"
"Ouch, Kats! That's mean of you! You're such a little meanie!"
The kid rolled his eyes and turned around. He started walking and Hawks followed him closely, his arms behind his head and he hummed a tune that randomly popped in his head. They soon stopped in front of a big house. Hawks let out an impressed whistle, "You live here?!"
Katsuki shrugged, "Yeah."
The boy hopped up the steps and rang the doorbell. There was a voice behind the door and it opened to reveal a man with brown hair and kind eyes. The man smiled when his eyes landed on his son, "Welcome home, Katsuki! Oh, and who might this be?"
Hawks raised a hand in a mock salute, "The name is Hawks, sir! I'm Katsuki's escort for the evening!"
The man smiled kindly, "Thank you for bringing my boy home safely, Hawks. I'm Bakugou Masaru. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Hawks shook the man's hand, "Same here! Your kid's a ball of angry energy! It's fun having him around!"
Masaru's eyes widened slightly, "Oh, uhhh thank you?"
Katsuki rolled his eyes, he's doing that a lot, Hawks mused. The boy waved his hand in a shooing motion, "Alright, you got me home, now go home, you weirdo!"
Masaru frown slightly, "Katsuki, that's not a nice thing to say to Hawks."
Hawks grinned and chuckled, "Naw, it's okay. I got used to the shrimp's attitude!"
Katsuki's hands sparked, "Stop calling me shrimp, y-you rooster!"
The teenager burst out laughing, and Masaru couldn't keep the grin off his face at his flustered son. Hawks wiped a stray tear from his eyes, "That's your best comeback, shrimp?"
Katsuki's face flushed red in embarrassment and before he could leap forward to pummel the still laughing teenager, his father easily caught him, "Alright, that's enough Katsuki. Why don't you go in and greet your mother? She misses you."
The boy scoffed, "I doubt that."
He paused and turned to Hawks, "Where do you wanna hang out?"
Hawks brows rose in surprise, "You… wanna hang out… with me?"
Katsuki glared at the ground, "You said you wanted to play some video games in the weekend."
The teenager scratched his chin and his eyes shifted to Masaru nervously, "Umm, is it ok if we play games at my place?"
Masaru smiled, "Of course, but he has to be home before his curfew of course."
"Awesome! I'll come pick him up on Saturday morning! Oh, here's my number if you need to reach me!" said Hawks eagerly as he took out a card from one of his coat pockets. Masaru took the card and smiled, "I'll give you a ring so you can save our number."
"Cool. Alright, I better head back. See ya, shrimp!"
Katsuki raised a fist angrily, "Told you to stop calling me that!"
Hawks laughed heartily as he flew off, disappearing into the night sky. Katsuki grumbled as he kicked off his shoes, he could hear his father chuckling, "What's so funny old man?"
Masaru shook his head, "I'm just… happy for you. You're making friends with someone in the agency. Someone who is not in a suit, that is."
"Well, he sucks at making friends. Said he didn't have any. I'm just gonna show him how to be an awesome friend!"
~Two months later~
"Kacchan! Where have you been?!" asked Izuku as his lower lip wobbled and tears appeared in his eyes.
"Busy," replied Katsuki curtly as he kicked at a pebble.
"Doing what?"
Katsuki pressed his lips together and stared at the other boy's wide green eyes, "I can't tell you."
Izuku pouted. Then he gasped and his eyes widened as a thought came to mind, "Are you having a secret hero training somewhere secret?!"
Katsuki schooled his face to not show any emotion, damn Izuku, and his accurate assumptions. He grabbed the other boy's hand and dragged him along, "No. It's just that my mom sends me to boring extra-curricular classes after school."
"Like what?" asked Izuku, ever curious and full of questions in that fluffy green head of his.
Katsuki wracked his brain for an answer, he can't say music because he couldn't prove that to his annoyingly curious friend. He thought about his training, "Dance classes," said Katsuki smoothly.
Izuku tilted his head, "Why dance classes?"
"Dance is good training for flexibility and balance."
"OHH! Maybe I should try dance too?"
Katsuki bit his tongue from saying something that would probably make Izuku cry. Ever since Izuku was diagnosed quirkless, he has been bullied by a lot of the kids in school and the neighbourhood. Izuku can be overbearing and annoying but Katsuki likes him, as a friend of course. He can talk about heroes and discuss quirks with Izuku, something the other extras couldn't keep up. Katsuki has been goaded to join a few of the taunting but he refused to stoop so low to their level. What they're doing wasn't very heroic at all, it's downright… villainous. It leaves a bad taste in his mouth and he sneered.
"K-Kacchan? Y-you're kinda hurting me," Izuku whimpered.
Katsuki relaxed his grip, "Sorry, Deku."
"What's wrong Kacchan?"
"Nothing. Just thought of something irritating."
"O-Okay. So, where are we going again?"
"We're going to buy that new hero games that just got released last week!"
Izuku's eyes widened further, how was that even possible is a mystery to Katsuki, "B-but it's gonna be so expensive! We can't afford that!"
"Mom says I can buy it since I aced my tests!" said Katsuki as he flashed a card with a wide grin on his face.
"Your mom's so cool, Kacchan!"
The taller boy scoffed, "Don't ever tell her that. Her head's gonna swell and explode with pride."
Izuku's face scrunched in confusion, "What? How is that-"
"It's just a phrase, shitty nerd!" said Katsuki as he rolled his eyes.
"You can be such a meanie, you know that?"
"Thought you'll be used to my- Hey!" cried Katsuki as someone bumped into him. The man who bumped into him walked away briskly. Katsuki frowned and realization dawned on him. He patted his pockets, "Shit! The fucker stole my mom's card!"
Izuku's gasped, "Oh no! We should report this- Kacchan wait!"
Katsuki had dashed after the pick-pocket thief. He dodged the crowd nimbly; his weeks of training had made him more agile. The man noticed he was being followed and had broken off into a sprint. Katsuki cussed and ran faster. The old hag will have his head if he lost the card. His hand itched to spark off an explosion but he knows the rules. Civilians aren't allowed to use their quirk in public without a license. He was getting closer to the man who was obviously getting out of breath. Katsuki grinned and he leapt forward and tackled the man. Both of them tumbled and Katsuki managed to land on top of the thief. He pressed a palm to the man's face, "Give it back or I'll blow up your face!"
The man gasped, "Y-you can't do that!"
Katsuki sneered at the man, his eyes glowing dangerously as his other hand sparked next to the man's head, "Try me, bitch!"
"C-chest pocket!" stuttered the man.
Katsuki stuck his other hand into the man's coat pocket and retrieved his mother's credit card. Something hard slammed into the side of his head and he was knocked over to the side.
"KACCHAN!"
He was dazed as he stared at the sky. Suddenly there was a hand on his throat and he was lifted off the ground before being slammed down onto the ground, his head ringing. The man's eyes were bulging with anger, "You think you're so tough huh, kid?! Well, I'll show you!"
"No! Stop it! Let Kacchan go! Someone, please help!"
"Stay back or I'll snap this kid's neck!"
"NO!"
"Get back kid! You'll get hurt!"
"But Kacchan! Someone, please!"
"Call for help!"
"Someone, please do something! He's hurting Kacchan!"
Katsuki was in a daze, he could feel that he wasn't standing on his own feet, even though he was upright. The pressure around his neck was very uncomfortable. He could make out a blob of his friend among the crowd. Damn Izuku was screaming and it's making the pain in his head worse. What happened again? Oh right, the thief. He gritted his teeth and gripped at the man's wrist around his throat, clawing feebly at it.
There were panicked voices around him and shit, he needs to breathe. Why won't this fucker let him breathe? He scrabbled at the hand around his throat, a whine escaping his lips. His vision was fading as the seconds ticked by. Explosion, he needs to use his quirk or he'll die. This is not how he wanted to die. He thinks he made his hands explode. There was heat in his hands.
Suddenly he was on the ground, gasping for air. He tried to crawl away from the man. He let out a pained cry when there was a sudden painful pressure in his chest and he was jerked to his feet by his hair. Katsuki wheezed, shit. It hurts to breathe, and his head is not helping. Why is it so hard to focus? His mind pulled out some basic first aid information that he was taught at the agency. Oh right, he probably has a concussion.
There was someone wailing, probably Izuku. And he was dragged back into an alleyway by the fucker. He gasped as he was manhandled roughly. He gritted his teeth. He's not going to let this fucker use him as a hostage. His hands sparked again but before he could make any explosion there was a loud snap. Katsuki nearly passed out at the pain from both his arms. There was a scream, was that from him? Shit, how can he let this lowlife scumbag do this to him? His quirk, what was this fuckers quirk?! He's going to lose consciousness, everything hurt. Everything hurts so bad.
Izuku. Shit. The idiot's gonna cry and blame himself or some shit. He can't let the shitty nerd do that to himself. He can't leave the nerd. Who's going to watch his back if he's dead? Shit, his hands are useless, what can he do to get out of this shitty situation? The hair on the back of his neck prickled and his instinct kicked in. He twisted in the man's grip, startling the man, and kicked the man where the sun doesn't shine as hard as he can. Katsuki smirked in victory at the howl escaping the fucker's mouth.
There was a buzz in the air and suddenly the man was yanked away from him and pinned against a wall by red feathers. Katsuki blinked in the haze of pain, feathers? He jumped when Hawks landed in front of him. The teenager grabbed his shoulders to steady him, "Katsuki!"
Katsuki stared at the teenager and laughed which sounded like a wheeze, "For someone who… claims to be the fastest, you're so fuckin' slow to get here, feathers."
"Help's on its way kid. Hang in there! Shit, your arms!" said Hawks, his brows knitted together in worry at the sight of the boy's mangled arms.
"Hurts… 'm tired," whispered Katsuki as his eyes fluttered shut. The adrenaline was leaving his system and his senses were flooded with pain.
"KACCHAN!"
Katsuki's eyes snapped open, "Deku?"
His green-haired friend was covered in snot and tears. The boy wailed at the sight of his injured friend, "Oh my god! Kacchan don't die! Please don't die!"
"Not gonna die… shitty nerd," said Katsuki before he passed out.
When he woke up, he was in a hospital bed. He lay in bed feeling confused for a few moments before memories rushed back. He gasped and sat up. A hiss escaped his lips when the world tilt and spin around him. He waited for the dizziness to pass before he opened his eyes to look at his arms. They were heavily bandaged. He gulped and tried to wiggle his fingers. He gasped at the twinge of pain, but he was relieved when he saw his fingers move.
The door to his room opened and he looked up to see Hawks walk in with a bag of snacks and what looks like a PS Vita in hand. He had a stick of yakitori in between his teeth. The teenager paused when he realized Katsuki was awake. He took the yakitori out of his mouth and rushed to the boy's bed, "Katsuki! You're awake!"
"How long was I out?" asked Katsuki hoarsely, fuck his throat hurts.
Hawks brought a glass of water with a straw to the boy's lips, "Uhh, nearly two days? They managed to fix your arms; no permanent damage was done. Your mom was making a huge fuss when they brought you in. She demanded that you get fixed by someone with a healing quirk."
Katsuki groaned, "Of course the hag's making a scene…how embarrassing."
Hawks plopped down on the plastic chair by the bed, "How are you feeling? Any pain? Do you need the doctor?"
Katsuki eyed the teenager. There were dark bags under his eyes. He obviously hadn't been resting well and it's all because of him. Katsuki looked away, "I'm fine. Arms hurt a bit but everything else, just peachy."
Hawks sighed, "Good. You scared the living bejeezus out of me! What were you thinking?! Going after a thief like that?!"
Katsuki lowered his head, his bangs covering his eyes, "…I'm sorry."
Hawks wanted to say more but he bit his lower lip to keep his mouth shut. He could see the boy felt terrible already, his shoulders were trembling. The teenager waited for a few moments, counted to ten and sighed, "What's done is done. So, you hungry? I got some snacks here! I don't know what kind of food you like though. Or you wanna play some games?"
Katsuki lifted his gaze to stare at the bag in Hawks' hand. He shifted in his seat, "What do you have?"
Hawks beamed and start rummaging through the food in the bag, "I got some chips, sour candies, chocolates, buns and-"
"Thank you, Hawks."
Hawks met his eyes and smiled, "You're welcome, Kats! Oh, just remembered! That green-haired kid asked me to call him if you woke up."
"Izuku?"
"Yeah, I think that's his name! He was so persistent and he made me promise. Hold up let me dial him up!" said Hawks as he took out his cellphone and keyed in the number he memorized, "Here."
Katsuki leaned toward the phone that Hawks held to his ear. It rang twice then someone picked up the call, "D-Deku?"
"Kacchan! Oh my gosh! I was so worried about you! I thought you were going to die when I saw you like that! You scared me Kacchan! I was so worried–"
Katsuki wasn't paying attention as his friend began to ramble. His guilt growing ten folds in him, threatening to drown him. He needs to get stronger. He can't let something like this happen again. What if Hawks is not there to save his sorry ass next time? He made up his mind. He's going to train harder to become strong.
