SUMMARY: Katsuki finally meets the eldest child of Endeavor! How will their friendship fare? Will he get along with his winged friend?
BANDAGES AND SCARS
"Kaaaacchaaaaaaan."
Katsuki blinked and looked up at his friend. Huh, he must've spaced out. Izuku leaned forward against his table, his eyes full of concern, "Are you okay?"
Katsuki propped his head on one hand, "Yeah, just feeling kinda sleepy."
Izuku's brows furrowed, "Did you sleep late again?"
The blond held back a yawn, "Yeah. Was up late doing my homework."
The grenette frowned, "That's not like you, Kacchan. Maybe you should tell your mom to cut down on your after-school activities."
Katsuki scoffed, "Not gonna happen. The hag has high hope for me in this."
"In dance?" asked Izuku sounding bewildered.
"Anyway, forget about it. Have you seen the news last night? What do you think about that new hero?"
Izuku's eyes lit up, as he expected, and the boy began chatting excitedly; forgetting his concern about his friend. Katsuki smiled as he threw in a few comments himself in their discussion. He appreciated the distraction as it kept him alert and forget about the aches and fatigue his body is suffering.
"You've been awfully quiet today," said Hawks as he eyed the boy standing beside him.
"Hah?" asked Katsuki as he turned to glare at the older boy.
Hawks peered at him, eyes narrowing, "Are you getting sick?"
The younger boy pushed his face away, "No! And ever heard of personal space?"
"If you're not feeling well maybe you should sit this one out," said Hawks with a sigh.
"I said I'm not sick! Jeez, get your ears checked, bird brain!"
"You two ready?" asked Kitamura over the intercom.
Hawks grinned and threw up a thumbs up while Katsuki just nodded curtly. The man sighed, "Alright, I'll explain this one more time. The objective here is to go through the obstacle and destroy all the targets marked with your colour. Remember, you must destroy all ten targets to get the best time. And no flying, Hawks. You gotta run. You can't rely on your wings all the time."
Katsuki flexed his finger, "I'm gonna beat you!"
Hawks smirked, "Cute. Let's see if you can catch up, shrimp!"
They fell into their starting stance as the countdown started with a beep. They sprinted into the obstacle zone as the buzzer rang. Katsuki took the right as Hawks went for the left. His eyes spotted the first robot skittering away to hide behind a stack of crates. He grinned as he took the other way around to ambush it. The little bot let out a screech when he appeared in front of it. He slammed a palm down and destroyed it with an explosion. There was a whistle over his head and he spotted a drone tagged with his colour.
Katsuki grabbed on of the destroyed bot's shrapnel and hurled it at the drone, using explosion to boost its speed. He grinned when it was a direct hit, "Take that!"
Hawks' voice was heard from the other side, "Better hurry up, Kats! I just got my fourth point!"
Katsuki's eyes widened, "No way!"
"Pick up the pace slowpoke!"
Cursing, Katsuki ran through the obstacle to look for the other eight moving targets. Katsuki clenched his jaw and swiftly destroyed the next target he sighted. He was covered in sweat by the time he destroyed his ninth target. His arms were trembling, he's reaching his limit. Shaking his arms in hopes to get rid of the annoying trembling and ache, his eyes scanned for his final target. Kitamura-san hasn't made an announcement meaning Hawks is not done yet! He has to be the first one! He heard the metallic pitter-patter of robot legs and he swivelled. He growled when he didn't see the bot, "Show yourself, you scrap metal!"
The back of his neck prickled and he leapt to the side, narrowly dodging the bot that leapt down from one of the crates surrounding him. He dove toward it, hands sparking. The bot let out a squeal and dodged his hand. Katsuki threw out one leg and kicked it toward a wall. It hit the wall with a clang, sparks flying from exposed parts. But it's still moving. It sputtered as it tried to coordinate its movement. Katsuki ran toward it, hands sparking again as he summoned explosion to his palm. He hissed as something sharp hit his palm as he released an explosion.
"That's time for Katsuki," Kitamura announced.
Katsuki pulled his hand back and stared at the piece of metal stuck in his palm. He assessed it for a moment and groaned when he's not sure if it's safe for him to pull it out.
"Time for Hawks. That's nearly 3 seconds apart."
Katsuki grinned slightly as he heard Hawks' groan. He cradled his injured hand close to his chest as he walked toward the exit of the training room. He saw Hawks rolling a shoulder as he walked out of his side of the obstacle. Hawk's eyes widened when he saw the younger boy cradling his right arm, "Hey, what's wrong?"
Katsuki reluctantly showed him his hand and grumbled, "Got something stuck."
"Looks painful. Let's get you checked by Gotou-san," said Hawks as he placed a gentle hand on the boy's small back. He looked up at the observation deck's window and raised his voice slightly, "I'm taking the kid to see Gotou-san. He got a piece of metal sticking out of his hand."
"Noted. Report to me after that. We need to go through your exercise together."
Hawks made an 'ok' sign with his fingers and led Katsuki out of the room. He could feel a slight tremble from his young friend, "How bad is it?"
Katsuki shrugged, "Not too bad. My hand's kinda numb. I think I overused my quirk."
Hawks clicked his tongue, "You gotta be careful, kid. Overusing your quirk could've caused a permanent damage."
"I know that! That's why I'm training so hard!"
Hawks grinned and ruffled his hair, "Hey, be like me. Work smart, not hard."
"I beat you anyway."
"That you did."
They paused as the door to the infirmary swung opened. A tall, imposing man with a muscular built stepped out. Katsuki instantly recognized him by the signature flames on his body. He was startled when Hawks shouted, "E-Endeavour-san!"
He looked up to see the excitement and wonder in the teenager's eyes. An expression that reminded him of a certain green-haired nerd. The no.2 hero in Japan turned to them and Katsuki involuntarily shrunk back a little at how intimidating the man is. Hawks briskly approached the hero, his eyes wide and mouth slightly hanging open. The flame hero eyed the teenager, "You must be one of the brats training under the agency."
"I- Y-yeah! I'm so honoured to finally meet you, sir! There's so many things I wanna ask you but-"
"I don't have time to talk with a fanboy right now," said Endeavour coldly.
Katsuki frowned slightly and eyed Hawks' back with concern. The cold shoulder didn't seem to deter the teenager's mood, "Of course, you must be busy! I guess I'll talk with you another time?"
Endeavour's eyes narrowed, "There won't be another time. I don't like wasting time in idle chit chat with brats."
Hawks bowed, "I'm sorry for holding you back!"
The flame hero scoffed and walked away. Katsuki approached his friend, "Hey, you okay?"
Hawks grinned at him, eyes still twinkling, "I talked with Endeavour-san! T-this is the best day in my life!"
"He treated you like shit though," said Katsuki carefully.
"Doesn't matter, that's just his thing, you know? The whole cool and scary persona!"
Curiosity prick at him and Katsuki asked, "Why'd you look up to him anyway?"
"He's my favourite hero! Like how you and Izuku-kun adore All Might but for me, Endeavour's the best hero!"
"Yeah? Well, I do agree that he's both strong and cool but the way he talks to you…"
"Hey, don't worry about me, okay? I know him, so his horrible social skill doesn't really tarnish his image in my eyes. Now, let's get you checked out by the doc!"
The elderly doctor looked up as the boys walked into his infirmary, "Hawks-kun, Bakugou-kun! What brings you boys here?"
"Katsuki got something in his hand," said Hawks coolly as he jutted a thumb at the boy behind him.
"Oh my, come here, boy. Let me have a look."
There was a buzzing sound and Hawks took out his phone, "Ah, I gotta go meet Ishikawa-san. He wants me to pick up a file. Will you be alright on your own?"
"I'll be fine," said Katsuki as he rolled his eyes.
"Okay, I'll be back soon! I'm leaving the kid in your hands, doc!"
"Don't worry, he's safe here," said Gotou with a chuckle.
Hawks flew out of the room leaving Katsuki with the doctor. The man cleared his throat and motioned for him to sit on the nearby stool. He did as instructed and watched the man pulled on a pair of latex gloves, "Alright, let me see the damage. Hmm, it doesn't seem to be deep. It probably won't leave an obvious scar on you due you or quirk. I'm going to numb your palm and pull this out. And then I'm going to wash and disinfect your wound, do you understand?"
Katsuki nodded. He watched with slight disgust as the doctor licked his gloved thumb and pressed it on his palm. The effect was instantaneous as he lost the feeling in his hand. He watched the man worked on pulling the shrapnel out and then pour distilled water over his wound before dabbing it with disinfectant. The man then wrapped his hand with a gauze.
"There, all done. My numbing quirk should wear off in five minutes. Why don't you lie down on one of the beds? Rest a little while you wait for Hawks-kun."
Katsuki nodded as he stood up, he's feeling very tired. There's a dull ache in his head and it's probably a good idea to lie down for a bit. He went toward the curtains to his right, where he remembered the two beds were kept in the infirmary. He pulled back the curtain and was startled to see someone on one of the beds. The red-headed teenager looked up at the intrusion, his turquoise eyes piercing. Katsuki noticed his arms were heavily bandaged and that there were patches of discoloured skin visible on his exposed collar bone. They were pinkish, like recently healed scabs. He approached the other free bed and climbed onto it. He flopped faced down on the bed and sighed at the softness.
"So, you're the new recruit, huh?" it was spoken in a whisper.
Katsuki turned his head to look at the teenager, "So, what if I am?"
The redhead grinned, amused, "You got spunk kid."
Katsuki adjusted himself on the bed so he lay facing the teenager, "I've never seen you around before."
The smile on the redhead's face disappeared, "Yeah, I don't train here that often. My quirk's a little… destructive."
Katsuki propped himself up on his elbow, "Really? My quirk's pretty much destructive."
The teenager cocked his head, his brows rising, "You don't say."
Katsuki let sparks appear on his uninjured had, "My quirk's explosion. They say my sweat has similar properties to nitro-glycerine. That's why I can explode things with my hands."
"Huh," said the teenager ash he leaned forward, elbows resting on his thighs, "Can you make your whole body explode with that quirk?"
Katsuki stiffened. Huh, can he do that? He never tried. Would be kinda cool though. He'll be like a human bomb or something. He shrugged, "Dunno, never tried."
"So, are you like, fireproof or something kid?"
"I can tolerate certain levels of heat but fire can still hurt me. What's your quirk anyway?"
The redhead held a palm forward and Katsuki watch as blue flames appear before they vanished, "Mine's a fire type quirk."
"That's kinda cool! I've never seen anyone with a blue flame as their quirk!"
The redhead gave a strained smile, "Thanks but I kinda hate it."
"Huh? Why?!"
The redhead leaned back, raising his bandaged arms, "Blue flames are very hot and unfortunately I'm not immune to my own flames."
Katsuki grimaced, feeling pity for the redhead, "That sucks, I'm sorry."
"Don't be. It's just my luck I'm stuck with this quirk."
"Is that why you're here? Are they helping you control your quirk?"
The blond missed the pain and anger that flashed in the redhead's eyes, "Kinda."
Katsuki yawned as he lay back down on the bed, "I hope the best for you. I'm Bakugou Katsuki by the way."
"It's nice to meet you Bakugou. I'm… Touya. Todoroki Touya."
Katsuki hummed as he drifted off to sleep. He thought he saw a sad look on the teenager's face before he was pulled into dreamland. He felt a hand ruffling his hair gently and for once, he didn't mind so much. The pull of sleep too tempting.
Katsuki groaned and swatted at the hand shaking his shoulder, "G'off!"
"C'mon, sleepyhead. Time to get you home," said Hawks, amusement in his voice.
The younger boy grumbled as he cracked an eye open and scowled at the teen. Hawks leaned against the other bed, not quite sitting on it, as he watched Katsuki try his best not to fall back asleep. He took out his phone and discreetly took a photo that he intended to send to the kid's parents. He seriously reminds me of a cat! He thought, holding back a giggle as he used a photo editing app filter to add cat ears on Katsuki's head. A grumpy cat, that is, thought Hawks as his grin widened. Katsuki stretched as he sat up on the bad. He rubbed at his eyes sleepily, "What's the time?"
"Well, it's almost six in the evening," replied Hawks as he scrolled through the texts in his phone. He hummed as he clicked on Masaru's chat and attached the edited photo of Katsuki. He typed: "The sleepy kitten" then clicked send. It didn't take long for Masaru to reply with a laughing emoji with little hearts.
"Thank you, Hawks-kun. My wife would love this!"
"What're you smiling about?" asked Katsuki when he realized the teenager was grinning non-stop. Hawks waved a hand casually, "Was just looking at cute pictures of some kittens."
The boy scratched his head and tried to peek behind the winged teen. Hawks noticed and looked over his shoulder, "What it is?"
"He's gone."
"Huh? Who?"
"There was someone… never mind. Do we still need to go see old man Kitamura?" asked Katsuki as he slid down the bed.
"Oh, he said, we'll go through today's exercise tomorrow. He had to go attend a meeting somewhere," replied Hawks as he stuffed his phone in his jacket pocket.
"I see," said Katsuki distractedly. He smacked his lips together and frowned. His mouth felt very dry, his skin too. Shit, he forgot to drink some water after his training. He's dehydrated. His frowned at the dull ache in his head. He jumped when Hawks' hand landed on his head.
Hawks frowned at the heat coming off the boy, "Hey, you okay?"
"Y-yeah. I just… I need some water. Forgot to drink after..."
He didn't have time to react when Hawks lifted him up and put him back on the bed, "Wait here, I'll get some water for you."
It didn't even take a minute when Hawks returned with two bottles of water. He handed them to the boy before sitting beside him, "You really need to remember having some bottles in the training room. Your quirk relies on your sweat and you get dehydrated real fast."
"I know, I know. We got distracted about my hand, remember?" said Katsuki showing his bandaged hand. He watched Hawks typed something on his phone. The teen grinned and showed him the screen, "I just typed in a reminder. This way, I get to remind you to drink some water every hour!"
Katsuki sighed, "You freakin' dork."
It wasn't until nearly two weeks later when Katsuki saw the redheaded teenager with bandaged arms again. He saw the teenager talking with Endeavour. It looked like they were having a heated argument. Katsuki frowned when Endeavour pushed the teenager against the wall. He said something to the teenager, the flames on his body flaring with his temper, before storming off. The redhead was gripping at his right arm.
Katsuki jogged toward him, "Hey! You alright?"
Touya blinked and looked down at the boy, "Y-yeah."
"What happened? Why did Endeavour shove you like that?" asked Katsuki with a small frown.
The redhead pushed himself off the wall, his arms falling to his sides, "He's just upset his project didn't work out very well."
Katsuki's frown deepened, "He shouldn't take it out on you. It's not like it's your fault. Right?"
Touya let out a breathy laugh, "Right. He shouldn't let his anger out on things I have no control over."
"How's your arm?"
"Hmm?"
"I saw you holding it. Are you hurt?"
"Oh, no. It's just… a nervous habit."
Katsuki nodded, "I'm sorry, but I couldn't remember your name."
"Just call me Touya."
"I'm heading to the gym. Old man Kitamura said I should work out to strengthen my arm so I could withstand bigger explosions. You... You wanna come along?"
Touya shrugged, "I got nothing to do, so why not?"
Katsuki's face lit up with a smile, "Awesome! Let's go!"
The redhead followed the blond toward the gym. He ended up showing the kid some workout routine to build up his arm strength and his core strength as well. He was impressed by how quick the younger boy learn things. He's like a sponge absorbing all the information like no problem. He noted the boy is naturally athletic too and he felt a twinge of jealousy. Katsuki always caught his attention when his thought began to wander to his father an he was thankful for that.
"How old are you, Bakugou?"
"I'm six. But I'll be seven next month!"
"You're a year older than my little brother."
"You have a brother?"
"Yeah."
Katsuki paused in his sit up when he saw the forlorn look on the redhead's face. He cleared his throat and continued his workout, "Well, I don't have any. The old hag says I'm more than a handful to raise. So, lucky me, I guess?"
Touya scoffed, an amused smile on his face, "That's not a nice way to call your mother."
"I'll call her whatever I want."
"So how do you find training under the agency so far?"
"I think it's good. I do feel like I have better control of my quirk, and I get to try some crazy moves without having the hag screaming at me about property damage."
"Yeah? Well, I'm happy for ya, kid."
"What about you? How long have you been training here?"
Touya gave him a sad smile, "I'm not… doing so well. I keep getting hurt by my quirk. That's why da- Endeavour was so pissed off at me."
"Oh? Are you his apprentice or something?"
"Or something."
Katsuki decided not to prod further. He stopped doing sit ups and wiped the sweat off his face with a towel, "Maybe all you need is a support item? Something to keep the flames from hurting you badly."
"I thought about that but Endeavour-"
"To Hell about what he says!" said Katsuki with a growl. Touya's eyes widened in shock as the boy continued to rant, "I say you make your own decision. You know what's good for you."
The redhead laughed and ruffled his hair, earning a yelp from the boy, "Kid, you got guts!"
"Hey, Kats! I brought some water for- Oh, uhh. Hello?" said Hawks as he paused at the doorway.
Touya turned to face the winged teenager, he's never met him but he's heard of him. The Endeavour worshipper. His eyes narrowed and hands clenched into a fist; there was a brief burst of blue flames. Katsuki wiped his hands on his pants as he got on his feet, "Thanks, Hawks."
"Who's your new friend?" asked Hawks as he passed him a bottle of water.
Katsuki blinked, "Oh, you don't know each other? Uhm, this is Touya."
Hawks grinned widely, "Hello! I'm Hawks! It's a pleasure to-"
"I'm sorry but I have to be somewhere," Touya as he ignored the offered hand.
"Huh? But you said you got nothing to do?"
"I just remembered something. I'll see ya around, Bakugou," said Touya as he waved a hand.
Hawks eyed the redhead warily, "Huh. That never happened before."
"What?"
"Me being completely ignored."
Katsuki scoffed, "He's just having a rough day. Maybe you guys can talk when he's not in a mood."
"But Katsuki, you're always in a mood!"
"HAH?! What do you mean by THAT?!"
The next time he saw Touya, he was already seven years old.
He watched with wide confused eyes as the redhead was arguing with Hawks. He's never seen Hawks looked so angry before. He doesn't remember how it started or when Touya appeared in the room, but they're screaming about what to do next and Katsuki doesn't have time for this shit. How did this happen?! Everything is just too loud. The annoying alarm is still wailing around them, "Guys! Shut the fuck up!"
"We need to evacuate through the east exit!" Touya shouted as he grabbed Hawks by the front of his shirt.
"No, they told us to take the south exit! The east exit's been compromised! It's closer to the first explosion!" screamed Hawks as he grabbed the redhead's wrist.
"Guys!" Katsuki tried to get their attention again. Shit, he's sweating too much. Why is it so fucking hot?! He stumbled toward them, vision slightly hazy, "S-stop arguing you dumbass!"
There was an explosion behind them and they spun around, Katsuki stumbling a bit as the world spun. There was a villain, his mind supplied in his confused haze; a villain attacked their training facility. He felt Hawks grabbing him and shoved him behind him. Katsuki fell on his knees, fuck he's so dizzy. The room is too hot and he's sweating too much. Dehydration.
Touya grabbed at Hawks' sleeve, "You take the kid and get out of here! I'll hold back this creep!"
Katsuki looked up at him, gasping slightly, "But your quirk… you can't…"
"I- I can't!" Hawks choked. There was a desperate edge in his voice, his eyes wide with uncertainty. Katsuki eyed the teenager's back, heart sinking at the absence of wings on his back. He vaguely remembered Hawks using his feathers to help evacuate some of the staff but most of his feathers got burnt to a crisp by the raging fire.
Touya cussed and stood in a stance, "Use your legs, run!"
"T-Touya… don't!" said Katsuki as he watched the teenager ran toward the villain, blue flames bursting from both arms. Katsuki watched, horrified, as the flames engulfed the redhead. Touya didn't seem to care as he sent a blast of blue flames at the intruder who summoned some sand up to form a shield. The villain sent some spikes flying at the teenager and Touya summoned up a wall of flame to deflect them, then he went around the wall to ambush the villain who was temporarily blinded by the raging fire. He staggered, his body in sheer pain as his flames devoured him. He was beginning to feel stiff too, like his limbs locking.
"Touya, look out!"
He was too slow; the sand spike pierced his chest and he let out a strangled cry. His blue flames vanishing instantly. He gasped as he hung in the air. His skin was charred and strangely he couldn't feel much pain. The villain grinned victoriously, "Looks like I'll get to have my revenge on Endeavour!"
"Can you make your whole body explode with that quirk?"
"Katsuki, wait!"
Touya glanced at the blur of orange as he watched Katsuki dash toward the villain, red eyes filled with determination, "K-kid?!"
The villain threw a wave of sand at the boy. Katsuki yelped as he was caught in the sand, he stumbled back as he lost his balance. He was close enough, a good three meters from the asshole. He glared at the villain as he raised a hand and then slammed his palm on his sweat-soaked chest, "DIE!"
Hawks was thrown back as Katsuki released a large explosion. He hit the wall hard before falling on the ground heavily. He raised his arms to protect his head as debris rained on him. His ears were ringing. He took a moment to collect himself before he pushed himself off the ground, coughing at the smoke, "KATSUKI!"
He saw the boy lying in a heap and he scrambled to get to him. The villain was knocked unconscious a few meters away. He could hear the buzz of a helicopter and some shouting from beyond the gaping hole that used to be a wall. He fell on his knees, ignoring the pain from the sharp rocks and debris. His hands hovered nervously over the boy's still form, too scared to touch him, "KATS?! Kid, open your eyes!"
"I-is he..."
Hawks looked up to see Touya struggling to prop himself up. His whole skin blackened and charred. Whatever remaining fabric he had was stuck to his skin and most of his hair was burnt away. He was a sight to behold. Hawks blinked at the tears in his eyes, "I don't... I-"
There was a cough and he looked down as Katsuki shifted. The boy groan in discomfort and Hawks let out a shaky laugh as he met Touya's gaze, "He's alive!"
Touya smiled as he lowered himself to the ground with a groan. He thought he deserves a nap. Yeah, a nap sounds good right now. He sighed as his eyes fluttered shut.
"T-Touya? Hey, man? Y-you okay?"
Never better, he thought as he lost consciousness.
