Chapter 6: Romance at Christmas
Draco
I was dressing for Potter's Christmas party. I had just belted my jeans and taken my shirt off when there was a knock at my door.
"Draco?"
Ah. Granger.
"I'm not ready yet!"
As I reached for my shirt, the door opened and Granger walked in. I peeked to look at her. Her hands were over her eyes.
"Draco, I'm so sorry!"
I laughed, "What didn't you get by 'I'm not ready yet'?"
"I don't know!"
I stopped grabbing my shirt and turned around to lean against my wall. I watched Granger as she slowly dropped her hands, but brought them back up again.
"Put your shirt on!"
"Come on, Granger. You know every girl would be dying to see this."
"Draco," she complained.
"Admit it, Granger."
"Absolutely not!"
"Admit it."
"Put your fucking shirt on!" Granger yelled, but she was clearly laughing.
"Not until you admit that-"
"If I say it, will you dress?"
"Yes."
"Fine," she groaned, hands still covering her face. "I admit it, every girl would be dying to see you shirtless."
"There. Easy as that, Granger. Don't make it more complicated than it already was."
I pulled my very uncomfortable ugly Christmas sweater Granger had bought for me and forced me to wear.
"I'm dressed."
She dropped her hands to her sides, and right then and there, I realized how beautiful she was when she dressed casually. Granger wore a red turtleneck shirt, black leggings, and red-black-green plaid skirt over the pants. Her hair was tied back in a cute bun at the nape of her neck, and she wore black ballet pumps. Granger had on red lipstick and her blush was obvious.
"You look hilarious with that sweater!" Granger laughed hysterically.
All I could think about was how beautiful she was. I watched her pick up the Santa Claus hat that was on my bedside table and put it atop her head.
"What time does the party start?" I asked, finally saying something.
She shrugged, tugged a piece of parchment out her Undetectable Extension Charmed handbag.
"Soon. It's only the four of us anyway. I'm sure Harry wouldn't mind if we went early."
"Okay. I'm ready, anyway."
When she walked up to me, I took her hand, twirled her around one time, and Disapparated to Potter's house. It wasn't snowing where he was, and that was nice because I hadn't brought any warm clothes other than what I was wearing. However, it was still quite cold because he lived in a lonely house by the sea. It was two stories tall, peanut butter brown, with double doors and many windows, in which all the drapes were closed over them.
Granger knocked on the front door. He must have been waiting for us, because the door opened right away.
"Happy Christmas, you two," he said.
Granger hugged him. "Merry Christmas, Harry."
She let go of him and walked into their house. I stuck out my hand for him to shake.
"How are you doing, Potter?"
"As well as I can, Malfoy."
I followed him into the house, closing the door behind me. I breathed in the smell of cinnamon. Torches were lit in the house, protecting the house using charms so the fire didn't spread. The mahogany furniture looked comfortable. I loved their house. It was so cozy.
"Hey, Hermione!" called she-Weasley, coming into the main room from the kitchen. "Hi, Malfoy."
"Hi, Ginny," Granger said, sitting down.
"Happy Christmas," I said. I never said her name, because I knew I'd end up calling her she-Weasley. I didn't want to mortify myself in that regard.
Granger and I sat next to each other on one of the mahogany couches, and the Potter couple magically moved another one of their couches across from us. Potter flicked his wand, and Transfigured a chair into a table. She-Weasley Summoned platters of food, including a turkey, roast potatoes, and yorkshire pudding. Also Summoned from her wand were plates and cutlery.
…
After we had finished eating her delicious prepared meal, another flick of she-Weasley's wand and another platter of food came onto the table. I recognized it as-
"Spiced Victoria sponge cake," I said. "Very impressive."
"Thank you," Potter said. "I did most of the cooking, actually."
"Really?" Granger and I exclaimed at the same time.
"Harry does most of the cooking in our house," she-Weasley answered. "I hardly do any of it. I clean the house and that's hard enough."
"You don't use magic?" I asked.
"I do, but it drains me. This house is bigger than it looks, Malfoy."
Once we had all gotten a slice of the cake, Granger pulled out of her Charmed bag the gifts we had prepared for the couple. At the same time, she-Weasley pulled the ones that they had prepared for Granger and I from under their tree. We all traded gifts to the right people.
"You go first," she-Weasley said to me. "You're the guest."
"Whatever you say."
I opened Potter's first. It was a set of dress robes. The undershirt was dark green. The tie and the robes were black.
"These are nice," I said. "Thanks, Potter."
I took the paper out of she-Weasley's bag and pulled out a book. It was a Muggle book. Surprisingly coming from a Weasley, a pureblood family. On the cover, it said Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Muggles had strange names too.
"That's a Muggle classic," she-Weasley told me. "I've read it."
"Thank you. I will definitely read this."
I might have shared a small smile with Granger as I said that. I lifted Granger's present to me. It was small. I unwrapped it. It was a small green velvet box. I opened the box and inside it was a ring. This ring was made of a green serpent and a red gryffin entangled over a silver ring.
"I know you like rings," she said quietly, rocking back and forth. "So I decided to get a custom-made one. The ring maker was confused when I told him to make it like that-"
"It's beautiful, Granger," I said, not wanting to hear the story of the ring maker. "Thank you."
She scooted herself closer to me and I put my arm around her shoulders. I know I said I wouldn't let what I thought was attractive about her grow into anything more but I think my feelings for Granger definitely shot up that Christmas.
Hermione
I nuzzled my head in Draco's shoulder, watching Harry open his gifts. From Ginny, he got a new set of robes for work. I got him The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, and The Call of the Wild.
"Thanks, Hermione! I can't quite believe you remembered I needed a few classics to read."
"Of course, Harry. If it's about books, I'm going to remember."
Draco laughed and tightened his hold on me.
From Draco, Harry got a new watch. Since Harry had gotten Charlie Weasley's old watch, Draco had gotten him a new one that works. Harry slid it over his wrist.
"Thanks, Malfoy."
"Your welcome," Draco said, squeezing me tighter again. I couldn't help but lean further into his touch.
Next was Ginny. She opened the one from me first. It was the one thing she had asked for. I gave her the list of members from Dumbledore's Army. I don't know why she asked for it. But I didn't ask.
"Thank you, Hermione."
The redhead sister folded the parchment and put it next to her. Ginny then opened the one from Harry. It was a kelly green dress that hugged Ginny's body type. It was beautiful.
"Thank you," she said, kissing her fiancé.
Finally, she opened Draco's gift. It was a gold necklace with two red hearts intertwined on it.
"What's this?" she asked.
"A Malfoy family tradition," he answered. "If two people love each other, someone gives one of them a necklace with hearts. I chose red because both of you are very proud Gryffindors."
Wow. I didn't know that about the Malfoys. I didn't know they had beautiful traditions like that. Finally, it was my turn to open mine. Draco let go of me, but he still stayed right next to me. I opened the one from Ginny. It was a dress. It was red. Of course. I thanked her and opened Harry's heavy one. It was what I had asked for. Les Miserables. I had lost it during the war. I had accidentally left it with my parents when I Obliviated them. When they had moved to Australia, they told me they had misplaced it and couldn't remember where they put it.
Last but most certainly not least, I opened Draco's. He had gotten me a couple of different things. For one, he got me a poem. I didn't read it aloud, because it said at the top, For my best friend, only. For two, and this made me cry, he got me the same necklace he had gotten for Ginny, but one of the hearts was green.
"Did I also mention that you could use it for true friendships?" he said.
I pecked the soft spot of his cheek. "Thank you," I whispered so small he probably didn't hear me. I think my feelings for Draco rose drastically at Christmas.
Granger,
As months go by day by day,
I've travelled along life's highway
I've been up and I've been down
Sometimes just went around and around
There are many times I couldn't have made it through
If I hadn't been fortunate enough to have a friend or two.
But the one that stands out from all the rest,
Is you my friend, my very best!
You've been with me through thick and thin,
When I just wanted to cry, you made me grin.
When I fell down, you helped me up
Without you, I'd be fresh out of luck.
You'll never know how much your friendship has meant
Or how much I treasure this time we've spent.
I just want to thank you for your friendship,
My life's greatest wealth.
-Your best friend, D.M.
AN: Yep, that's Christmas! I hope that's okay. I did not write that poem. It's one that someone else wrote to their best friend. It's on Pinterest.
I decided to update another chapter for y'all today. But I still don't have any reviews! Please review! I want to know what you think will happen next! I love all the reads, follows, and favorites, but please review! Maybe I could bribe you to review. If you review, I'll put your name in the next A/N and give thanks to you! (Evil laughs)
Remember that Hermione got Draco the ring and he got her the necklace! That will be very important in a few chapters. Thank you again for reading! I actually never thought I'd get anyone to read my fic, but thank you so much! I'm talking too much, sorry…
