GROWING UP
The Spring air felt cool on his skin but not as biting cold as Winter. He's finally in middle school. His parents had decided that he should go to a public school rather than a private one, even though they could afford it because it's closer to home and at a walking distance. Since they're not on a business trip at the moment, either one of his parents would drop him off to school. They were still worried about letting him walk alone so they made him promise to walk home with Izuku which he had reluctantly agreed to. Katsuki felt annoyed about it but he didn't have much of a choice. Besides, he didn't really mind the talkative nerd's company.
Katsuki was leaning against the gate wall, phone in hand and thumb swiping at the screen as he scrolled through some news site. Hawks appeared in almost every social media now. The young budding hero was gaining a lot of fans because of his easy and cheerful personality. Everyone loves him. And Katsuki misses him.
He hadn't seen the winged teenager in weeks now that he's transferred to one of the agency's Southern branches in Fukuoka. He knew it would happen sooner or later but he never realized how unprepared he was to be apart from Hawks. They've grown quite close over the years. He didn't want to admit it but it upset him when he received the news from the teenager weeks ago.
"I'm being transferred," said Hawks in a quiet voice. They were sitting in one of the training facilities' break room. Katsuki nearly dropped the bottle in his hand as he turned to him. Eyes widening for a moment before he schooled himself to appear relaxed. He lowered the bottle onto his lap, "When?"
Hawks rubbed his neck, "Next weekend. Ishikawa-san gave me the details yesterday. They want me to be the eyes and ears there. There's been rumours of a group of villains prowling about."
Katsuki lowered his gaze, "I see."
"They're setting up a Hero Agency for me! Hawks Agency!" said the teenager as he motioned hands in an arc at the name, "Ishikawa-san will be working as my PA and a few agents are assigned to work under me too! Cool, huh?"
Katsuki forced a smile, "Yeah, congratulations."
The grin on the teenager's face faltered, "Hey, cheer up. I'll visit whenever I have time. I promise, and I'll call too!"
The younger of the two nodded, he raised a fist, "You better kick some villains' ass out there! I'll be watching you!"
Hawks grinned as he bumped his fist, "Heck yeah! Just watch me, Kats! I'm gonna soar up the hero ranking!"
"I'm sure you will. You're amazing, Hawks," Katsuki paused. He clenched his fists and grinned widely, "But I'm gonna beat you and be number one!"
Hawks grinned and ruffled his hair playfully, "You better catch up!"
Katsuki sighed as he stuffed his phone in his pocket. He rolled his shoulder and rubbed his sore neck, "What the fuck is taking the nerd so long?"
"Kacchan!"
Katsuki turned to the boy, his hands sparking, "DEKU, YOU SHITTY NERD! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!"
Izuku raised his arms as he skidded to a halt, "Uwaah! I'm sorry! I got caught by one of the seniors. He was talking about his club and it's rude to just leave him!"
"Grow a spine and walk away!" scoffed Katsuki as he kicked at his friend's back, not too hard. Izuku yelped and stumbled forward, "Ow! Kacchan! That's mean!"
The blonde boy grunted and started walking. Izuku hurried after him, "So, are you going to join any club?"
"Ain't interested in any shitty school club."
"Oh, right. You have stuff to do after school."
"What about you, huh?"
"Uhmm, I'm not really sure. Definitely not the sports club. Maybe culture or literature? Do they have a hero club in this school?!"
"You've been writing in your shitty notebook for a while, why don't you join the lit club?"
Izuku blushed, "How do you know about that?!"
"Hah? What are you so embarrassed about? It's not a secret. You write in that book in the open!"
The shorter boy hid his face in his hands and started mumbling incoherently. Katsuki whacked him upside the head, "Stop that! It gets on my nerves!"
Izuku pouted as he rubbed at his head, "Sorry."
"So, what were you writing in your shitty notebook?"
Izuku blushed again and started to run, "N-NOTHING!"
Katsuki stared at him dumbfounded, "Oi, what gives? Deku! Come back here!"
"Times up. Well done Bakugou. Your explosion has gotten more powerful over the month. It's impressive!" said Kitamura over the intercom.
Katsuki shook his right hand, it stung but not too bad. He went to the bench by the exit and grabbed a towel to wipe his face and neck. His black t-shirt was soaked thoroughly and he felt gross as it clung to his clammy skin. He sat down with a sigh, grabbed the bottle of water and drank some before pouring the rest over his sweat-soaked head. It was cool and refreshing against the heat.
The door swished open and Kitamura walked in, a tablet in hand, "How's your arm, kid?"
"Sore but not too bad."
The man nodded and took note, "That's an improvement. Shoulder?"
"Same."
"Okay, so you still need to strengthen your arms to withstand those recoils."
The boy nodded and rubbed the towel over his wet hair, "Anything else?"
"No. I'll make some adjustment to your workout routines and e-mail you the details. Have you been keeping up with your appointments with Mishima-san?"
Katsuki scowled, "Yes."
"Good," said Kitamura as he took a seat next to the boy. He sighed, "I know you don't enjoy those sessions, but they're good for you. You've been through some traumatizing things and they'll affect you. You need a clear head to be a good hero, Bakugou."
Katsuki gritted his teeth and remained silent. He felt the man pat his back before standing up, "Go home and rest."
Katsuki nodded as he stood up. He pulled the towel off his head and threw it in a basket beside the bench. Kitamura watched the boy walked toward the changing room. He scratched his head and sighed again, "You're a tough kid, you truly are."
When Katsuki walked out of the changing room, he saw a man with unkempt, wavy beige hair looking lost in the hallway. He held a package in his hand. The man spotted him and quickly approached him. Katsuki tensed at the approach and fell into a defensive stance. The man raised his free hand placatingly, "Whoa, calm down kid!"
"Who the fuck are you? How'd you get in here?"
"I'm a member of the Hero Commission," said the man as he showed his card.
Katsuki relaxed his stance but remained wary of the stranger. The man's card stated that his name is Yokumiru Mera and works under the Hero Licensing Department. Now that he's closer, he noticed how tired the man looked. There were heavy bags under his dark eyes. The man was shorter than Kitamura and he had a hunched form like he carried something heavy on his back. The man put away his card, "I'm looking for a… Bakugou Katsuki?"
Katsuki narrowed his eyes, "You're looking at him."
Yokumiru blinked, "Oh. Uh, here. It's from Hawks."
It was Katsuki's turn to blink as the man offered the package to him, "From Hawks?"
"Yeah. I was in Fukuoka yesterday and I met him there. He asked me to give this to you since I'm going to be here today."
Katsuki took the package from him, "Thanks."
"Yeah. Well, see you around," said Yokumiru as he turned away. Katsuki heard him muttering, "Damn it, Hawks. I'm not a postman. Ughhhhh, I wanna sleep."
"What do you have there, champ?" asked Masaru as he glanced at Katsuki through the rearview mirror.
"It's from Hawks," said his son.
"Aren't you going to open it?"
"Maybe later."
Masaru waited for a few moments before releasing a quiet sigh. He's worried about the boy. Every since Hawks moved to Fukuoka; his son had started to isolate himself more often than usual. He had hoped the boy would get over it and move on but then he remembered how close the two are. They've developed a very close friendship over the years, and Masaru was truly grateful for that. But Katsuki's dependency on the young hero, especially after the kidnapping was worrisome. He and Mitsuki had asked Izuku to help them get their son out of his shell, but even their son's childhood friend seemed to find it a challenging task.
As soon as he had the car parked, Katsuki got out without a word. The boy kicked off his shoes at the entrance, "We're back."
"Welcome back!" came Mitsuki's reply from the kitchen.
Katsuki headed straight for the stairs but his mother stopped him, "Oi, brat! Give your mother a hug."
The boy rolled his eyes, "Aren't I getting too old for that kinda thing?"
Masaru smiled, "Katsuki, you're never too old to hug your mother."
Katsuki stared at his parents. His mother waited for him with open arms, her cheeks slightly puffed. Oh my God, is she pouting? The boy grumbled as he approached his mother who quickly engulfed him with a tight hug. He let her have her moment before he struggled to free himself, "Okay, that's too long! Let go!"
Mitsuki grinned as she gave him a noogie, "Go put your things in the room and come down for dinner."
Katsuki stumbled slightly when he was released. He scowled at her as he tried to fix his hair in vain, "I'm not hungry."
"Brat, I lazed around all afternoon to make dinner. You better bring your ass down here and sit with us," said Mitsuki with narrowed eyes.
"Grr, fine!"
His parents watched him as he stomped upstairs. Masaru gave his wife a peck on the cheek, "What's for dinner?"
"Oh, the usual," she replied with a wave of her hand.
Masaru chuckled as he took a seat, "Hmm, curry rice, gyudon, gyoza, tamagoyaki and miso soup. Honey, that's a lot more than usual. What's the special occasion?"
Mitsuki grinned mischievously, "I got the job."
Masaru's eyes widened, "Really?"
"Yeah. It's the perfect surprise!" said his wife proudly.
"He'll be so pleased!"
Mitsuki shushed him when she heard stomping down the stairs. Katsuki appeared, still scowling, and stomped over to the seat beside his father. He huffed and crossed his arms over his chest. He raised a brow at the sight of all the food on the table, "What's all this for?"
His mother smiled sweetly, and Katsuki narrowed his eyes suspiciously, as she spoke, "I got a big shoot this weekend! It's going to be one of my biggest projects!"
Her son scoffed, "So? You never celebrate your previous 'big projects'."
"This one is very special! I get to take a shoot with a Pro Hero and your dad gets to be the one to choose the outfits for us!"
Katsuki was intrigued, "A Pro Hero? Who?"
Mitsuki grinned cheekily, "That's a secret! Not gonna risk you telling Izuku-kun and get rumours flying around!"
"Hey, I can keep secrets!"
"Really?"
"Yeah!"
"Hmm, nope! Not gonna tell!"
"Why you old hag-"
"Aaanyways, let's start dinner. Shall we?" said Masaru before the whole thing escalate.
"Fine."
He fumed at the smug look his mother gave him. They ate their dinner and shared stories about their day. Katsuki replied to his parent's questions with annoyance. Once they're done, he helped his father to clean up the dishes. He's always the one washing while his father dries them with a towel. Masaru felt proud of his son. They were worried about his brash attitude before but not so much now. He's grown to be a disciplined and responsible child. Sometimes a little too much though, he thinks.
Once the two were done, Katsuki excused himself. He brushed and flossed his teeth, and then he washes his face. Then he went to his room to do some of his homework before going to bed. He looked at the clock on his table, good, he has an hour and a half before bedtime. He reached for his school bag and that's when he saw the package on the bed that he had forgotten. He moved to sit on the bed and took it in his hands. He stared at it for a while before he decided to open it.
Katsuki's eyes widened at the black hoodie in the box. He took it out and grinned slightly at the words printed in red with a gold border in front: Soar to the top. At the back of the hoodie was a print of red wings. There was a letter at the bottom of the box. He picked it up and read what was written:
Happy 13th birthday, Katsuki!
I know the timing may be off when you receive this package but I hope you like your gift? It's my first merch! And this one is limited edition! It may not be as cool as the All Might merch but my team's working hard on the designs. Please, have mercy on them.
I'm still busy with my hero duties, didn't expect it to be so many! I'm drowning in paperwork and Ishikawa-san won't stop hounding me! (Save me, Kats!) But once everything starts to slow down, I'll definitely drop by!
How's middle school? I bet it's boring! Izuku going to your school too? I hope he does! And I hope you're still going to your appointments with Mishima-san and get better. It takes time, so be patient, okay? Anyways, pray for me! I wanna hang out with you as soon as possible! I'm dying of boredom here!
Take care of yourself, Katsuki.
Your super awesome pal,
Hawks.
Katsuki put the letter down on the hoodie and looked into the box. There was a little envelope in there. He picked it up and felt something hard inside. He tipped out the content and a metal keychain slid out. It's a gold-plated keychain, shaped like a wing. The wind was painted red on one side and on the back was an engraved, Hawks #1 fan. Katsuki chuckled as he gripped it in his hand. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and sniffed, "I miss you, dumbass."
The keychain he got from Hawks clinked on his backpack as he walked. Izuku, ever the hero otaku, had zoomed in on it immediately and had started bombarding him with questions.
"Is that a Hawks merch? Where did you get it Kacchan? How come I've never seen it online? Is that a special edition one? Oh? Is it a gift?"
"Deku, shut the fuck up! It's too early for your ramblings this early in the morning."
"But Kacchan! How did you get this?" asked Izuku as he touched the keychain, his eyes wide in wonder, like a child.
Katsuki smacked his hand, "It's a gift, okay? Happy now?"
Izuku inhaled and Katsuki groaned as he knew what's coming. Izuku started talking rapidly again, "It's from him, isn't it? Wow, Kacchan! You're so lucky! Is it going to be listed as one of his merch? When are they going to start selling? Will there be pre-orders? What other merch are there? Are there going to be limited edition merch too?"
"God damn in, Deku! I don't know, okay?!"
Izuku seemed to snap out of it, "Ah! Sorry, Kacchan!"
Katsuki huffed and continued walking. He should give himself a pat on the back. He endured that pretty well and didn't explode like usual. Still, he shook his hands and let them spark to burn off the sweat collecting on his palms. Izuku jumped at the sound before relaxing.
"So… your birthday is coming this weekend. Any plans?" asked Izuku curiously.
Katsuki pursed his lips, "My folks say they're taking me to mom's big shoot this weekend."
"Oh. Where are you guys going this time?"
"Tokyo."
"I hope you'll have a great time."
"You better not slack off on your training while I'm away."
Izuku chuckled, "Of course not."
As they approached their school gate, they saw what seemed to be a scuffle going on. Two tall students from another school, based on their uniform, were harassing a student from their school. The bullies were laughing as one of them pushed the thin student against the wall. Before he realized it, Izuku saw Katsuki ran toward them, "Hey, what the fuck are you guys doing?!"
"Hah? Who the hell are you? Friend of yours, Sasayaki?"
Sasayaki glared at the bully. He was startled when he heard a crackle. He turned wide eyes to Katsuki whose hands were sparking madly as the blond growled at his tormentors, "Get your fucking hands off him!"
"Whoa! Whoa! Okay," said the bully as he released his grip and took a few wary steps back.
The other bully grabbed at his friend's sleeve, "C'mon, Juro. Let's split. We're gonna be late for school."
Izuku watched the two students quickly take their leave. He ran to help pick up the backpack on the ground and give it to the boy named Sasayaki. The boy had dark bluish hair with long bangs that slightly cover his grey eyes. The student muttered his thanks to him then turned to face Katsuki, "Thank you. May I know your name and class?"
"Bakugou Katsuki. Class 1-B."
Sasayaki smiled at him, "I'm Sasayaki Hibiki from class 3-D."
Both Katsuki and Izuku blinked their eyes in surprise. They didn't expect him to be a senior since he's only a few inches taller than Katsuki. Sasayaki chuckled at their expression, "I know. I get that a lot."
"Umm, if you don't mind me asking, why are those guys bullying you?" asked Izuku, his curiosity got to him.
The senior student grimaced and rubbed the back of his head, "It's because I'm quirkless."
"Oh! Just like me."
"You're like Izuku."
Sasayaki looked at them in surprise. He turned to the green-haired junior, "You're quirkless too?"
Izuku blushed and nodded his head, "Y-yeah. I'm Midoriya Izuku, same class with Kacchan."
Sasayaki tilted his head, "Kacchan?"
Katsuki smacked his childhood friend, "It's a dumb nickname that got stuck with this nerd."
Izuku grinned sheepishly. The senior student stared at them oddly. He pointed a finger at Katsuki, "You have a quirk?"
"Yeah, so what?"
Sasayaki pointed at Izuku, "And you're quirkless?"
Izuku nodded his head. Sasayaki dropped his hand, "Huh. And you two are friends?"
"Since we were little, y-yes," said Izuku. Suddenly, he was feeling off at the question. He shivered involuntarily as Sasayaki's eyes stared at him. He felt like prey being stared down by a hungry predator.
"I'm kinda jealous of you now, Midoriya-kun," said the older teenager with a smile. Izuku felt his skin crawl at the smile. It looks off and insincere.
"Jealous of this nerd? Hah! Nothing to be jealous about. Oi, Deku. Let's go, we're running late!" said Katsuki as he walked away.
"Ah, Kacchan! Wait!" Izuku ran after him and turned to wave at their senior, "See you around, Sasayaki-senpai!"
Sasayaki watched as his juniors disappeared into the school building. His eyes focusing on the green-haired boy as he felt jealousy twist in his gut. He pressed a hand to his mouth, "How lucky of you, Midoriya-kun. I'm so jealous."
Katsuki shoved his hands into his pockets as he followed his parents into the building. His parents seemed rather excited and they kept glancing at him that it was beginning to tick him off. He had to keep his temper in check though since they're going to meet a Pro Hero. His parents have been dodging his question for three days and he still couldn't figure out who they're going to meet. He'd run a list of heroes who were active in the fashion industry in his head and the only few he'd like to meet weren't likely to be here. Since he saw news of them taking down villains in different parts of Japan. He scowled, he hated it when his parent's keep secrets from him.
They were led by a staff to the changing room and Katsuki was ready to lose his shit when his mother began giggling excitedly, which was creeping him out, "What the hell, hag?"
"Katsuki!" said a familiar voice excitedly. A weight suddenly fell on his back and he was pulled against a firm chest. Arms wrapped around him and held him tightly. Katsuki blinked in shock, his eyes stung with tears, and turned his face to the side to see Hawks grinning at him, "H-Hawks?"
"Did you miss me!" said the young hero as he pressed his cheek against Katsuki's: nuzzling him in front of his parents. He could feel the heat rising on his face and then he snapped out of it. He struggled in the winged hero's arms, "What the fuck, Hawks?! Let go!"
"Aww, but Kats! I wanna hug you some more! I miss ya, buddy!"
Katsuki knew he's blushing, his was face so hot and he briefly wondered if he'll accidentally set his quirk off. He heard his mother cackling madly and looked at her. His eyes widened in horror when he saw the phone in her hand, "DON'T YOU FUCKIN' DARE TAKE A PHOTO!"
Mitsuki grinned mischievously, "Oh, it's worse. It's a video!"
That was worse, "You old hag! I'LL DESTROY YOUR PHONE!"
Masaru couldn't keep himself from laughing, "Calm down, Katsuki!"
"Yeah! Relax!" said Hawks as he still had the boy in his arms. Katsuki pushed his face away, annoyed at the stubble tickling his face.
Katsuki gritted his teeth and gave his mother his deadliest glare. She was unfazed by him though, "Alright boys! Say cheese!"
"Wait a-"
"Cheese!"
Mitsuki couldn't stop giggling at the photo she took, "My God, Katsuki! You're such a gremlin! I can't believe you're my son!"
"Shut up, hag!"
Hawks released the boy and ruffled his hair fondly, "Happy birthday, Kats!"
Katsuki smacked his hand away, "Quit it!"
"Did ya like my gifts?" asked the hero with a grin.
Katsuki kept his eyes down and nodded. Hawks beamed, and if he were the fucking sun, Katsuki would be blind right now. Masaru shook hands with the young hero, "It's been a while, how are you, my boy?"
"Other than getting bored out of my mind doing paperwork, I'm fine and dandy! How's the little spitfire?"
"Oh, you know. Still kicking and screaming at the world," said Masaru teasingly.
Katsuki shot him a glare and Hawks laughed. Katsuki jumped when his mother smacked his back, hard. He turned to her, "What the fuck was that for?"
Mitsuki still looked smug and it's irritating, "So, do you like your surprise?"
Her son blinked, "Wait. You're saying the Pro Hero we're meeting is him?!"
Hawks placed a hand on his chest dramatically, "Ouch! You wound me, Kats!"
"Yup. It's his first fashion shoot and he asked for us specifically to help him out," said Mitsuki with a grin.
"Which reminds me, we gotta dress him up! Come with me, Hawks-kun."
"I'll talk with ya later, Katsuki!"
Mitsuki slung an arm around her son's shoulder and pulled him flush against her side, "Tell me, it's the best birthday surprise ever."
She grinned when her son blushed, his face and ears turning red. He mumbled something and she shook him gently, "I can't hear you. Speak up, brat!"
"Thanks, mom."
Mitsuki felt her heart melt at the gratefulness in her son's eyes. She chuckled and pecked his temple, "C'mon, we got work to do."
They celebrated his birthday in a private room at some fancy restaurant in Tokyo, above the hotel they're staying. It was on the top floor and they get to see a breathtaking view of the sun setting behind Mt Fuji. Katsuki couldn't remember when was the last time he sat down to watch the sunset beautifully. He remembered he used to watch the sunset with Izuku when they were little. They'd be at the park, sitting on the dome structure, and they'd watch the sunset quietly. They got into trouble for getting home late though.
His parents and Hawks were chatting animatedly and it was kinda nice to see everyone so relaxed. Hawks met his eyes and he quickly looked away; his cheeks warm. His mother, apparently had brought the hoodie Hawks gave him and he was forced to wear it. He'll be so happy to see you wear this! So, put it on, brat!
And she was right. He wanted to leave and hide when Hawks started to get all sappy and dramatic. The teenager practically beaming when Masaru complimented the design and choice of material. They've talked about having Masaru help review the designs before they're being sent to the factory for mass production.
"Oh! I just remembered!" said Hawks as he patted his jacket pocket. He pulled out a plush toy that looked like him, his mom gushed over it, and gave it to Katsuki, "So you'll have a little me to accompany you."
Katsuki blushed deeply, damn it. He's feeling lightheaded with all these blood rush to his head. He grunted as he took it from the teenager, "Thanks."
Katsuki's eyes twitched as the teenager grinned. God damn it, why does he have to smile so brightly like that? Idiot!
They had their dinner, and Katsuki admitted, it was great! And then they have cake. He wanted the day to end quickly because they're all having a great time teasing him. They took some photos and chatted some more. Katsuki was feeling sleepy as his usual sleep time approaches. He tried to hold back a yawn, but everyone noticed how tired he looked. Damn it, this is so embarrassing!
His father put a hand on his shoulder and said in a gentle voice, "C'mon, son. Let's take you back to our room."
Katsuki's too sleepy to argue so he nodded and got to his feet. He didn't realize he was clutching at the Hawks plush tightly in his hand. He heard the hero bid him a good night and he waved a hand.
"It's been a while since I've seen him so happy," said Mitsuki as she gazed at the glowing city. Her mind going down memory lane, remembering her son on different times of his age growing up. Her son had gone through some shit and she's thankful he's still alive with them. She didn't know what she'd do if she lost him and sometimes, she regretted how she treated him. She understands she can be a bit tough on him, hell, abusive even. But she just… she just doesn't know how to be all gentle and motherly like Inko. She grew up without her mother and her father was a man who's firm on tough love and hard work. She wished she could do better.
She sighed and turned to look at Hawks, "Thank you."
Hawks smiled at her, "He's a good kid. I'm sure he'll be a great hero one day."
She laughed, "Yeah. But I want him to remember that he's still a kid, you know?"
The smile on the hero's face disappeared, "Are you regretting your decision with the agency?"
"Sometimes. But I want the best for him. Like they say, he has a very powerful quirk and if he falls to the wrong hands or isn't trained properly, he could hurt a lot of people, himself included. I'm glad he's improved so much. He doesn't accidentally set things on fire or destroy things with his quirk anymore. And he's managing not to lose control because of his temper. So, I can't really say I'm regretting my decision back then."
Hawks nodded and poked around at the leftover food with his fork, "They're going to start giving him missions soon, y'know?"
Mitsuki buried her face into her arms on the table, "I know and I'm worried. I want to believe in my son but I'm also scared."
"Hey," said Hawks as he reached over to pat her hand, "You can tell the agency to give him the easy ones."
She scoffed, "You'd think they'll listen to me?"
The teenager shrugged, "You're a scary lady. Give it a shot."
Mitsuki chuckled, "I'll give them hell."
Masaru pulled the blanket over his dozing son. He sat on the edge of the bed and patted his head gently, "You've grown so big now. And strong too."
"Mhh, shut up. Stop being sappy."
Masaru chuckled at the sleepy reply, "Happy birthday, son. Hope you'll have a bright future and achieve all of your dreams."
Katsuki blinked sleepily and smiled, "Thanks, dad."
"Good night, son. I love you."
"You too."
