SUMMER: Summer finally came and Katsuki's off for his summer training. He'll be spending most of his summer holiday training to be stronger at the Hero Commission's training facilities and at the same time he's struggling against his inner turmoils.
SUMMER TRAINING
The fist narrowly missed his face as he dodged to the side. He grinned at the determination in his opponent's eyes. He grabbed him by the side of his head and quickly kicked his feet under him, throwing him down onto the sand. Katsuki chuckled as he looked down at Izuku, "Too slow!"
Izuku was out of breath as he lay on the warm sand, squinting at the sky and the silhouette of his friend. He groaned as he pushed himself to a sitting position, "H-How are you so good at this?"
Katsuki offered a hand and pulled him up, "Practice."
His friend looked confused, "With who?!"
The blond tapped his temple, "Visually."
"Huh? I don't get it."
Katsuki sighed, "You know those moves you see from video games and shows? Yeah, I mostly tried those."
"How'd you know which one to use?" asked Izuku, his eyes wide with astonishment.
The taller boy shrugged as he led them to the mat they had laid out earlier where they left their bags, "Mostly I don't. I'm just following my instinct. But understanding your opponent's moves comes in handy. C'mon, we've been sparing for a while, what was one move that you notice I tend to do?"
Izuku pursed his lips in thought, "Umm… Oh! I know! You always start with a right hook!"
Katsuki nodded, "Good. That's a habit I need to change. You, on the other hand, took some time to think about what to do. And that slows you down."
"I think I understand. Thanks," said Izuku as he took the water bottle offered to him.
The boys sat on the mat, shaded under a cluster of palm trees. Katsuki wiped the sweat off his skin with a towel. He tugged at his sweat-soaked tank top with a grimace and then pulled it off. Izuku frowned at the raised pink line on his left shoulder. The scar reminding him of the incident with Sasayaki a month ago. The blond noticed him staring, "Take a picture, it'll last."
Izuku blinked and flushed, "S-sorry."
"It's okay," said Katsuki as he took a sip from his bottle.
His friend sighed and fiddled with his shoelace. The sun was already high over their heads and it's almost time for them to go home. Which also means he won't be seeing his blond friend until the end of Summer. One week had passed so quickly.
"So, where are you going this summer?"
Katsuki sighed as he leaned back on his hands. His eyes gazing at the glittering water and crashing waves, "I hear we're going around Japan this time. Dad's meeting some folks to discuss designs for the end of year gala."
"Oh… do you really have to go with them?"
"I wish I don't have to but they want me to be around to understand the ins and outs of the fashion industry. They think it might come in handy."
Izuku put his chin on his arms that were crossed over his knees, "Well, I guess that makes sense if they plan on passing down the family business to you."
Katsuki shrugged, "I'm not sure I could take over since I plan to be a fulltime Pro Hero."
"Well, if Best Jeanist can do it why not you?"
"…I'll think about it."
Izuku sighed as he gazed at the sea, "I'm kinda nervous."
"About what?"
"We're already in the middle of our first year as middle schoolers. We'll be third years soon and then we're going for UA."
Katsuki turned his gaze to his friend, "You nervous about getting into UA?"
"Well, yeah! I mean, it's one of the most prestigious hero academies in Japan. It's not going to be easy for me since... you know?" said Izuku as he turned to meet Katsuki's gaze.
"You're not bailing out on your dream, are you?"
"Of course not! It's what I've been dreaming since I was little!"
"Good. Don't quit. You give it a go, who knows you might get in?"
"And if I don't?" asked Izuku, his voice in a whisper.
"Well, there are other hero academies you can try."
"But what if none of them want to take me in because I'm quirkless?"
"Hey, we don't know what'll happen in two years. There might be some changes in the application requirements."
Izuku hugged his knees tighter, "Being a hero… is everything I ever want, Kacchan. I don't know what I'll do if I can't be one."
Katsuki frowned. He knew that. Izuku never gave up on his dream. He keeps chasing it, desperately wanting it to come true. But Katsuki's logical and knew that Izuku's chance is pretty slim. He had looked up the hero schools around Tokyo, none of them had taken in a quirkless student before. He had brought up that Izuku should consider about going for the Hero Support Engineer route. His friend was adamant about being a hero. He didn't know how else to convince his friend to consider other possibilities. His guts clenched uncomfortably at the thought of Izuku's dream being crushed by reality. How well would he take it?
Katsuki smacked Izuku's arm as he got up, "C'mon, let take a shower and head home."
Izuku rubbed his arm with a pout and followed his lead. He folded the mat and put it in his backpack while Katsuki gathered the empty bottles and food wrappers in a plastic bag. The blond put the trash in the bin by the public toilet. The beach may be a junkyard but at least the public toilet and showers are still in decent condition that they could use it after their training.
After nearly half an hour, the boys walked out in fresh clothes and damp hair. Katsuki ran his fingers through his hair, tugging at the strands to style his hair. Izuku shielded his eyes from the bright sunlight, "Ne, Kacchan. Wanna grab some ice-cream?"
Katsuki took a moment to think about the offer and nodded, "Sure."
"Let's stop by that new dessert store by Unikoro! I wanna see what they have!"
"How was your day?" asked Mitsuki as her son walked in the living room and faceplanted on the couch. He came home later than usual because he decided to spend extra time Izuku. They ended up having lunch together at a curry house before the grabbed some ice-cream. After that, they spend a good hour or so at the arcades. Finally, they stopped by a bookstore to grab some manga and the latest hero magazine before heading home.
"Good," came his muffled reply.
Mitsuki grinned mischievously as she chucked one of the cushions beside her at him. It hit him in the back and then bounced off to the floor. He lifted his head and gave her a glare. His mother chuckled as she picked up the remote and changed the channel. She watched in the corner of her eyes as he picked up the cushion off the floor and hugged it. He sighed as he turned his back to her. Mitsuki shook her head in amusement, "Go sleep in your room, brat."
"Here's fine," he replied tiredly.
"Suits you then."
Mitsuki let him sleep while she went through her documents and sketches. She looked to see what was on TV whenever something caught her attention. She looked over her shoulder when she heard a noise from the front door. Masaru walked in with bags of groceries, "Hey, honey."
"Welcome back!"
"Where's Katsuki?" asked Masaru with a tilt of his head.
She motioned at the slumbering boy on the couch, "Napping."
Her husband smiled at the sight, "Do you need help with packing?"
"Nah, I got most of the stuff ready. But I do need help with dinner."
"Alright."
Mitsuki put her document on the coffee table, turned off the TV and followed her husband to the kitchen. She helped him put away the things and put aside the ingredients she needs for dinner. The husband and wife worked together washing and cutting the ingredients. They joked and talked about whatever comes to mind. When dinner was ready, Masaru was sent to get their son. He approached his son, "Katsuki, time to wake up."
Katsuki groaned and buried his face into the cushion he was hugging. His father chuckled, "C'mon sleepy head. Dinner's ready."
One red eye opened to look at him. Katsuki sighed as he pushed himself up, "Time is it?"
"Well, it's almost seven."
The boy rubbed his neck, then he stretched his arms over his head with a yawn. Masaru ruffled his messy hair, earning himself an annoyed glare from his son. He then went to the kitchen where his wife was getting the table ready, "Where's the brat?"
"I'm right here," said Katsuki as he walked in. He went to wash his face at the sink before he took a seat beside his father. His mother gave him a bowl of rice, "Did you finish packing your things?"
"Yeah," he replied as he took the bowl. His eyes roam over the dishes on the table. He took some eggs, stir-fried vegetables and grilled salmon and added them to his bowl. His father placed a bowl of miso soup next to his cup of water. He nodded at his father, "Thanks."
"Luckily we managed to match our schedule with the agency. The first two weeks, we'll be in Sapporo, then a week in Osaka and the last week in Fukuoka."
Katsuki perked up, "Fukuoka?"
His mother grinned as she rested her chin on a palm, "Yup! Why? You excited to see Hawks?"
"No!" said Katsuki flustered, his cheeks warm.
Masaru chuckled, "We miss him too, you know. I'm sure he misses you too."
Katsuki glared at his bowl, "Yeah? Doesn't seem like it. Hasn't even texted in a while."
His parents looked at each other with mild concern. Mitsuki sighed, "He's a Pro Hero now. He must be busy with hero duties."
"Whatever," their son grumbled. He ate his meal quietly. He hasn't received any text or call from the winged hero since early May. That means he's gone silent for more than two months. He had asked Kitamura but the man said he didn't know about Hawks' whereabouts as well since he himself hadn't received news from Ishikawa or the other agents at Fukuoka. The agent had assured him that it's normal for heroes to be out of touch when they're on infiltration missions. Katsuki couldn't help but worry for the worse but Kitamura told him that if something went wrong, they would receive news for back up. There's really nothing he can do but to wait until he gets to Fukuoka to see if Hawks is alright.
"Make sure you behave yourself," said Mitsuki with her hands on her hips.
"What do you take me for?" replied Katsuki with an annoyed glare.
She crossed her arms in front of her chest, "A troublesome brat."
"Now, now, let's not start an argument. We'll see you in ten days, Katsuki. Keep in touch, alright?" said Masaru as he smiled at his son.
Katsuki nodded and then hefted his duffle bag over his shoulder. He followed the HPSC agent to the waiting car. He had never met the agent so Katsuki couldn't help but be a little wary of him. The man had introduced himself as Hayashi Taiki. He looked to be in his thirties. He had short, wavy dark green hair and what looked like leaves sticking out of his head. His skin was a medium tan and his eyes were honey-coloured. He put his bag in the trunk and Hayashi opened the backseat door for him. He muttered his thanks and climbed in.
The man climbed into the driver's seat and started the car. Chopin's Nocturnes, Op. 9: No. 2 in E-flat major was playing on the radio. Katsuki watched his parents as they waved him goodbye at their hotel's entrance. He waved a hand at them as the car began to move. He sighed as he sunk in his seat and took out his phone to scroll through his training schedule.
"Do you want me to change the music?" asked Hayashi.
"No, it's alright. I'm fine with this," Katsuki replied. He saw the man nod his head.
They remained quiet as the man drove him toward the training facility. It was located in a forest at the foot of Mt. Yoichi. It'll be about an hour and a half or two hours drive from Sapporo. Katsuki put away his phone and took out his notebook and a pencil. Mishima had asked him to continue writing things that stress him or any negative emotions he felt in the book. She advised him to explore them and find a way to manage them.
"Understanding these things will help you manage your emotions well. Sometimes it's hard but that's okay, take your time to explore and break them down. If you need help, call or text me, alright?"
Katsuki stared at the first one he had written, feeling like a loser. He frowned at it. He turned to a blank page and started writing his thoughts on it. The classical music playing from the radio actually helped him remain calm and focused on his task. After a while, he closed the notebook and put it in his bag. He gazed out the window and stared at the trees and mountains as they drove along the long stretch of road. Katsuki's eyes began to droop as boredom and sleep deprivation began to overwhelm him. He pressed the back of his hand against his mouth as he yawned. A nap would be nice. He shifted in his set and rested his head against the car window, arms wrapped around his chest. He took in deep breaths and let himself drift off.
Katsuki sat in the dark, his knees pulled close to his chest and arms wrapped around them. Sasayaki appeared in his dream again. He glared at the older boy, "Get out of my head."
"Make me."
The blond sighed and buried his face against his arms, "Go away."
He heard footsteps as Sasayaki approached him. The teenager crouched down in front of the blond; his grey eyes boring into him. He smirked as he rested his chin on his palm, "C'mon, Katsuki-kun."
Katsuki ignored him. He's just too tired. The other boy sighed, "You're pathetic. You're no hero."
The blond growled, "Shut up."
"And you're definitely not a good friend. I mean, didn't you and Izuku agreed to be honest with each other when you were little? How long are you gonna keep this whole hero training a secret from him? Are you planning on leaving him behind?"
"No! I just…I just can't tell him."
Sasayaki stood up and rubbed his chin as he paced around the blond, "Why? It wasn't in your contract is it?"
Katsuki shifted. He's not sure why he didn't tell Izuku sooner. He remembered wanting to tell him one day, as a surprise, but then he began to doubt his decision. Would Izuku be happy for him? Would he feel left out?
"Deku's…. quirkless. He'll feel like I'm leaving him behind if he knows. I don't want… to upset him."
Sasayaki scoffed, "So, you feel it's enough that you're sharing training schedules with him? Make him feel he has a chance to get into UA? You do know he has zero chance to get in?"
"Deku can do it."
"Ever heard a quirkless entering UA? Let alone become a hero? Just be honest to him and stop giving him hope. Better spare him the misery and save him from his delusion."
Katsuki clenched his fists, "Shut up. I know Deku can do it."
"Stop lying, Katsuki-kun. Think about this then, are you willing to lose him?"
His breath stuttered, "W-what do you mean?"
"UA's entrance exam involves both written and practical tests, doesn't matter which course. We both know the practical test is no cakewalk. Dear little Izuku could get himself killed. A quirkless like him can't defend himself. So, stop avoiding the truth. Tell him to just give up."
Katsuki gripped his arms tightly, "No, I won't do that to him."
"Fine. We'll see how it goes," said Sasayaki as he faded into the dark.
Katsuki opened his eyes just as the car pulled to a stop. It was already dark outside. He rubbed at his sore neck as he sat up. The training facility was a simple rectangular shaped building that reminded him of a warehouse. He would be staying here for nearly ten days. In a new environment, surrounded by new faces. He sighed as he pushed the door open. Hayashi had gone ahead and took out his duffle bag from the trunk and carried it for him. The man nodded to him and motioned with his hand, "Follow me, Bakugou-kun."
Katsuki's hand tightened on the strap of his backpack. He followed the man into the building as the man began explaining, "There are twenty staff working here, including myself. You will be working with my team. There are five members in my team and each of us specializes in a different area for your training. The living quarters are on the second floor of the west wing. It's not much but we provide the basic necessities. The medical bay is on the first floor, along with the R&D department. Your training will mostly be done outdoors. We're going to use the forest as your obstacle course."
They got into an elevator and Hayashi pressed the second-floor button, "You'll have your own room so you don't have to worry about privacy. My room will be next to yours, so if you need anything, don't hesitate to drop by."
Katsuki nodded. The elevator door opened and they stepped out. Hayashi led him to his room and handed him a key card, "We'll start your training at seven-thirty sharp tomorrow. Meet me outside before then. Meals will be brought to your room by our staff but if you have a request, give the kitchen a call. Any question?"
"Yeah, do you have a gym or like a running track?" asked Katsuki.
"Gym's on the ground floor. We don't have a running track but there's a dirt path that you can follow that goes around the facility. Be sure to follow the markers so you don't get lost. Oh, and do inform me if you're out of your room. Alright?"
"Got it," said Katsuki. He didn't like feeling restricted but there are rules he had to obey.
Hayashi clapped his shoulder, "Alright, kid. Rest well. There are some papers for you to go through, it should be on your desk."
Katsuki nodded and he opened his room. Hayashi dropped his duffle bag by the closet and then left the room. Katsuki sighed as he sat on the bed. He checked his phone and realized he couldn't get any service. He wondered if they have Wi-Fi. Surely, they'll need it for communications, right? He checked for a wireless network and was honestly relieved that there's one. He just needs the password to connect. He went to his desk and picked up the cream coloured folder. He sat down and went through it. The contents were mostly about his training schedule, the meal schedules, a map of the area and the building, and names and positions of the staffs. He found the Wi-Fi password and used it to connect his phone with the wireless network. The instant his phone got connected, he received a barrage of texts.
Katsuki scrolled through the texts and quickly replied to his mother's and Izuku's text. He scowled when he realized someone had added him to their class group chat, again. He exited the group and deleted it. Then there was one from Kitamura wishing him good luck and assuring him that Hayashi's team can be trusted. Mishima texted him as well, reminding him to take care of himself and to contact her if he needs her service. He was surprised to get a text from Inko who told him that Izuku was bored out of his mind and she'll try to keep him motivated to continue his training on his own. He smiled and replied with a text and asked her to be his eyes to make sure the nerd didn't slack off while he's away. He received a new text and his eyes widened when it was from Hawks. His thumb hovered over it for a moment before he opened the text.
"Good luck with your training."
Katsuki frowned, his brows knitting together. That's it? He waited for more but nothing came after a minute. He felt anger welled up in his chest. After weeks of no news from the winged hero, that's all he has to say? Katsuki exited the chat app. He didn't feel like answering the text and chose to ignore it. He put his phone on silent and plugged it in to charge. He decided to take a shower while he waits for dinner.
"Okay. Our objective is to help you build resistance to your quirk's side effects. So, here's your chance to use your explosion at its strongest. Make some big booms!" said Hayashi as he spread his arms to illustrate.
Katsuki grinned with excitement at the chance, he also needed to get off some steam. He's still pissed at Hawks for that one text, "Sweet!"
"Izumi-san will be on standby in case anyone got injured, Shimizu-san will put out any fire and I will provide obstacles for you to destroy."
"What about the others?" asked Katsuki curiously.
"You'll meet them later. Okay, I want you to destroy as many of my golems as you can until you've reached your limit," said Hayashi as he stomped his barefoot on the ground.
Katsuki turned to the trees when he heard the sound of wood snapping and creaking. He watched as beings made of wood came stomping out of the tree lines. They reminded him of monsters in video games. Katsuki grinned widely as he flexed his fingers. He waited for the golems to get closer before he dashed towards them, his hands heating up and sparks flying. He slammed a palm against a golem's chest, "DIE!"
The explosion he released was immense that he managed to blow away three golems in his path. Katsuki hissed slightly at the heat but he quickly recovered and he ducked under a golem's fist. He slammed his palm on its leg and blew it off. The golem groaned as it fell on the ground with a heavy thud. Katsuki quickly moved to its head and blasted its head into smithereens, sending dust and splinter flying. He moved on to the next golem that's close by. He shouted at Hayashi, "Is that all they can do? They're too slow!"
"Alright, let's make it challenging," said the man with an excited grin. It has been a while since he gets to summon a lot of golems.
Katsuki narrowly dodged a vine whip coming from one of the golems. He grinned and grabbed the vine. He let the golem pull him toward it and he flipped in the air, landing on its shoulders. He blew off its head and jumped as another golem tried to grab him. He noticed the golem's movement was faster than before. The golem threw its hands forward and its twig fingers extended forward, aiming for the boy. Katsuki rolled away and then made a quick dash toward it, his hands crackling. The golem sidestepped him and he quickly changed his direction with a blast from one hand, he landed a palm on its back and destroyed the golem with a single blow.
Hayashi whistled, impressed, "Kid's crazy strong!"
"He's scary," Shimizu said with a nod. She sent her water whip to douse out the flame on the remains of the wooden golems scattered on the ground.
"It's over five minutes and he's still able to make such a big explosion. He's not showing signs of fatigue yet," said Izumi as she eyed the blond boy with awe.
"Not bad. I'm gonna give him another five minutes before he starts to wear down. Alright, kid! Levelling up the golems for ya!"
"Bring it on!" shouted Katsuki with a wide grin.
The explosive boy reached his limit ten minutes later, impressing the three adults. All around him were the burning remains of Hayashi's wood golems. Shimizu worked to put out the flames before they spread to the forest. Katsuki winced at his sore arms and shoulders as he sat on the ground. Izumi used her healing quirk to help soothe his aching muscles. Hayashi handed him a bottle of water, "You're quite impressive, kid! Guess the guys from Musutafu weren't joking."
Katsuki took the bottle, "Thanks."
"How does it feel to finally go all out?"
"It was awesome!"
The man chuckled, "We're gonna help you polish that quirk of yours. I noticed you use your explosion like rocket propulsions. Have you ever tried moving with it continuously?"
"Not really. I'm still trying to figure out the amount of force I need to go in a straight line without slowing my speed."
"Guess we'll add that to your exercise."
Izumi dropped her hands, "Alright, you're good to go, Bakugou-kun."
"Thank you."
"So, we're gonna keep doing this until two hours are up. Then you'll have class with Yamauchi, he'll teach you basic survival skills. You'll have combat training with Kumagai after lunch. He's a tough guy but I'm sure you'll enjoy hand-to-hand combat with the guy!"
Katsuki couldn't help but grin with excitement as he got to his feet, "Let's start!"
"Now I know you're excited but I don't want you to overdo it too. Give me a sign if you need a break. I've read your files and you have a habit of pushing yourself too far. There's nothing wrong in taking a break in between."
Katsuki rolled his eyes, "I get it."
Hayashi clapped his hands, "Good! Now go out there and destroy my golems!"
The air was knocked out of him as he landed on his back. He quickly rolled to the side to avoid the large foot aiming to crush him. Katsuki flipped up to his feet and before he could make his move, a fist came flying at him. He managed to block it with his arms. He hissed in pain as the fist connected with his forearms. Kumagai was a tall hulking big man with a bear quirk, meaning he had the strength and senses of a bear. He towered over Katsuki and every single hit that Katsuki landed on him didn't seem to affect him. The man grunted, "Not bad, kid. You got good reflexes."
Katsuki shook his arms, "You're not so bad yourself old man."
The man guffawed, "Where did they find this kid? I like him!"
Hayashi shrugged, "You should've seen him this morning. He destroyed my golems so easily with his explosions."
"Really? Hey kid, use your quirk!"
"Hah? Isn't this training supposed to be quirk free?"
"C'mon, kid! Entertain me!"
Katsuki wiped the sweat off his chin with the back of his hand. He grinned challengingly, "I'm not going to hold back."
Kumagai thumped his chest, "Don't! Give me your all!"
Katsuki dashed forward, his hand sparking as he threw an explosive punch at the man who blocked with his arms. The man stumbled back at the impact, "AMAZING!"
Hayashi chuckled as he watched the two continue their fight, "It's been a while since I saw Kumagai-san have so much fun."
Izumi fidgeted with the hem of her skirt, "I-I hope they don't overexert themselves."
The two spectators flinched as a wave of heat washed over them from one of Katsuki's explosion. The loud explosion reverberating around the forest and sending animals scurrying and birds flying. The other staff at the facility were slowly coming out and had gathered to watch the action. Some began cheering for either Kumagai or Katsuki. A stout bald man approached Hayashi, "They're still going at it? I thought Kumagai-san would've been done beating up the kid."
Hayashi grinned, "Hey, Yamauchi-san! Bakugou's not a normal kid. He's really fast at adapting and a natural with combat. You could say he's probably the best recruit we got. A genius!"
"Too bad he's stuck with the agency though," said Yamauchi with a sigh.
The smile on Hayashi's face faltered, "Yeah."
"Hey, at least the kid gets proper training if he aims to be a hero. I bet he'll be one of the best of his generation!"
There was a loud cheer and the men turned their gaze to Kumagai who had pinned Katsuki on the ground. The boy was out of breath and his hands sparked but there was no explosion. Katsuki reluctantly muttered his surrender and Kumagai helped him up. The man patted his back, nearly sending him falling forward since his knees felt weak, "You amazing, kid! I've never had that much fun in years! A worthy opponent! I feel alive! Bahahahaha!"
"I'm gonna beat your ass before I leave," said Katsuki between breaths.
The man grinned widely, "I'll be waiting!"
Izumi rushed toward the two, fussing over Katsuki who tried to shoo her away. Hayashi sighed and picked up the water bottle he kept by his side, "Drink up kid. Can't have you passed out because of dehydration!"
Katsuki narrowed his eyes at him as he took the bottle with shaky hands. He reluctantly let Izumi looked over him. Kumagai's voice was loud as he spoke in excitement, praising his fighting skills. He finally noticed the crowd gathered at the side, most of them shouting encouraging words to him and giving him thumbs up before they went back into the building. Katsuki finished his water quickly and once he got the okay from Izumi, he got up to go inside. He flinched when Hayashi smacked his arm, "Good job, kid. Go get cleaned up and we'll talk about today's exercise after dinner. I'll see you at eight."
Katsuki went to his room and took a hot shower to soothe his aching muscles, he rubbed at his sore shoulders and arms. The excitement had worn off him and he stared at the tiled wall blankly. After his shower, he threw on a black long-sleeved shirt and dark grey pants since the temperature gets cooler at night. He flopped down on his bed and checked his phone that he left in his room all day. His parents left him some texts and a few photos of what they've been doing. There was a long string of texts from Izuku, the boy rambling about a hero in action he'd seen that day. There was a video sent along too. He got a text from Kitamura praising him for showing a good impression to the staff in the Yoichi Training Facility.
No text from Hawks.
Katsuki ignored the twinge in his chest and replied to some of the texts he received, using photos from his parents to show Izuku his 'activity of the day'. He then set up an alarm and put his phone on the desk beside the bed. He sighed as he used the remote to dim the lights. He felt drained, it was a very busy day. He threw an arm over his eyes and it didn't take him long to fall into a dreamless sleep.
