A/N: I have never written Good Wife fanfiction before. This is a Will/Alicia story, staying true to the storyline until 5x15.

Chapter One:

"Kalinda, what's up?" he answered the phone tensely, furrowing his brow as he read over the latest briefs that his secretary had handed him.

"Will, have you seen the news?" she asked him, her voice quiet, shaken.

"No, what's wrong?" Will Garnder sensed the worry in her voice. Sure, Kalinda was a fairly reserved person, but he had known her for long enough that he considered them friends, he could certainly tell when something was wrong. He quickly turned on the television in his office and saw what she must've been referring to. "A shooting? Are you ok? Are our people...are they ok? Diane? Diane was in court this morning." his mind began to swirl with possibilities. He knew of at least five of their attorneys who would have been at the Cook County Courthouse that morning, and based on the headline flashing across his screen, there had been a shooting, at least four were injured and two were dead. "Kalinda where are you?"

"I'm here." she answered calmly, she was stepping into the courtroom where the shooting had occurred, following the stream of police and other emergency services personnel who were thankfully letting her through. "I..." she paused as she saw a figure hunched in front of her, "I have to go. I'll call you. I'm ok, Diane is ok." she assured him, it was the truth, she knew that Diane had gone to meet Kurt for lunch just before the shots rang out, she had watched them get into his car.

"Kalinda, I'm coming down there!" Will told her, he began looking for his keys and his jacket as he stood from his desk.

"No, don't." was all she could tell him before she hung up and threw herself onto the floor, "Alicia are you alright?"

"I'm...I...it's" Alicia Florrick stammered to her old friend as she clutched the gaping wound on her husbands chest. "The paramedics. Where are the paramedics?"

"They're coming." Kalinda assured her, "here, let me." Kalinda covered Alicia's hands with her own to apply pressure to the gunshot wound Peter had suffered. "Keep talking, talk to him, try to keep him awake." she suggested. She knew the truth, and she suspected that Alicia did too, the next round of paramedics would be in any moment, but the first round had gone to those they thought they had a chance of saving, and based on the extent of his injuries, it didn't look as though Peter would survive this.

"Peter, Peter, it's me, can you hear me?" Alicia whimpered as she stroked his cheek, she could see him gasping for air, struggling to get a word out. "You're going to be alright Peter, I'm here."

"Leesha" he gasped for air, "I'm sorry." he told her quietly, sweat dripping down his cheeks. It hurt, everything hurt, he just wanted to close his eyes, "I love -" he began.

"No, Peter, do not do this. Do not give up."

"Love you, babe." he gave a half smile.

"Listen Florrick," Kalinda interrupted him, "this is not it, this is not the time to give up. Fight." she heard the medics come in the door. "He's got at least two GSWs to the chest." she told them as they began to take over assessing his injuries.

"The kids." Peter winced as he was moved onto the gurney.

"I know." Alicia stood back, realizing that she was in the way. She was not helping the situation, she couldn't fix this. He had been shot, her husband had been shot. He was only in Chicago for the day to see her. They were going to have lunch, discuss the kids, he was meeting her in court to just see her in action for a few moments...and now he was being wheeled away. "Wait, where are you taking him?" Alicia shouted once she realized the medics were preparing to leave, "He...he is the Governor. This is Peter Florrick." she stammered. She noticed their eyes became wider as they hurried out the door. "Where are they taking him?"

"County." Kalinda told her, "I can drive you."

Alicia shook her head, the last thing she needed was a woman that her husband had slept with driving her to the hospital. "No, his security...they..." she trailed off, "can you please tell Cary?"

Alicia wasn't sure how many hours it had been. She had made it to the hospital with Peter's security team, they had stepped away for a moment at his insistence so that he and Alicia could talk before her trial started, and that is where things had gone wrong. Now, she was waiting. Waiting for an update from the surgeon, waiting for her kids to arrive, Owen, Jackie, Eli. She was thankful they hadn't arrived yet, it was chaotic at the hospital, and she knew she didn't have the answers they would need about their father, son, friend. "Alicia?" his voice came from behind her.

"Eli," Alicia stood immediately and rushed to him, she didn't even think before wrapping her arms around him, "I don't ... I don't even know what happened." she admitted as she began to sob, it was involuntary, she wished she were composed, in control. The way she had been when the two of them had been on stage countless times before, "He's in surgery."

"I know." Eli nodded as he held her close, "He will pull through this. Peter is a strong man. We both know that." Eli was trying to assure her, as best he could, or maybe he was trying to assure himself. "I brought...I went to your apartment and brought you a change of clothes." he told her, "I heard...Kalinda said you might need it."

Alicia hadn't even considered her appearance, but as she looked down, her suit was covered in blood, there was dry blood on her hands, she was sure it was on her face as well. "Thank you." she nodded, as the two went to sit down, they noticed a team of doctors walking towards them, solemn but difficult to read looks on their faces. Alicia knew they were coming for her, coming to give her news, an update on his condition.

"Mrs. Florrick?" she nodded as the man finally reached her and spoke, "If you would like to come with us, we can give you an update on the Governor?"

"Of course." Alicia nodded and then looked to Eli, "You're family." she told him, he nodded quickly and stood up, following her to the quiet room with a team of about 5 doctors, and 3 other hospital staff wearing suits. "My husband is dead." Alicia stated as the door closed behind them all. She hadn't planned to say it, she just knew. She knew from her job that you didn't bring a wife into a closed room with tissues, doctors, at least two lawyers and a hospital administrator to tell them that their loved one was in recovery. "He died." she stated again.

Eli looked at her in shock, was she right? No. Peter couldn't be dead, he had spoken to him earlier today, they had plans, there was a future. Peter could not be dead.

"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Florrick. We did everything we could. There were 3 bullets, the severed artery...it was too much damage." the doctor told her calmly. "We are so sorry for your loss."

"May I...may I see him?" Alicia asked, a sense of calm coming over her as she digested the information.

"He won't be ready...not yet." another doctor spoke, "but we can have someone come and get you when we can. We will have to make an announcement. He...he is the governor after all."

"Please wait." Alicia told them firmly, her lips formed a straight line across her face. Maybe she was trying to smile, or convey some appreciation to them, it felt like the same straight face she had made for many years at press conferences. "I need to tell my children...our children, his mother."

"Of course. If there is anything you need, please let us know. Can we call anyone?"

Eli shook his head, "Please, just leave. We will...we will be in touch." he managed to say. Eli Gold had never felt so useless in his entire life. Eli had failed at many things, being a husband, a father, a friend to many, but in Peter Florrick and his family, Eli had found a family of his own, and that family was being shattered before his very eyes. There was nothing he could do about it.

"I'm going to change." Alicia told him, taking the bag that Eli had in his hand, "Can you...can you give me a moment?"

"Of course." Eli nodded, "I'll...I have a call to make." he finally finished as he stepped into the hallway and gave Alicia a moment to herself. He wasn't sure how long it had been before he heard activity in the hall, doors swung open and Eli saw Zach, Grace and Jackie Florrick all coming towards him at once, followed closely by two other members of their security detail. He couldn't help but scoff, the security detail that hadn't managed to keep him safe.

"Eli, where is he?" Jackie was the first to speak, "I want to see him. Where is Alicia? I haven't heard anything more since she told me there was an accident."

"We heard on the radio there was a shooting." Zach interrupted his grandmother, "Where is Dad?"

"Zach, Grace...Jackie. Please, just..." Eli tried to calm them, "come in here, your Mom is in here." he knocked gently on the door before entering, the Florrick family filing in behind him.

"Mom?!" Grace lunged towards her mother and hugged her close, "You're alright? I was so worried. Where is Dad?"

"Grace, Zach, I'm so glad you're here." Alicia pulled both of her kids into a hug, embracing Jackie at the same time, "Thank you for coming Jackie."

"You said to come Alicia, where else would I be?" Jackie countered calmly. "Where is Peter?"

Alicia slowly pulled away from the embrace of her family, she smoothed out the fresh black suit and white blouse that Eli had brought for her, and she tucked her just brushed hair behind her ear. "There was a shooting at the courthouse." she began.

"Alicia, where is my son?" Jackie's voice became more insistent.

"Dad and I...we were in the courtroom when a man entered with a gun, and Dad..." Alicia paused to catch her breath, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her. She could see the colour draining from their faces, they had walked in optimistic but concerned, and she saw as the horror took over. "Dad tried to help, he tried to protect me...he was shot."

"Alicia, tell me now. Where. Is. My. Son." Jackie demanded once more.

"Zach, Grace...your Dad, he loves you very much, and I'm so sorry, the doctors, they did everything they could..." she paused as she watched their worlds collapse around them, "he didn't make it. Your Dad, he died."

"Kalinda, what do you know?" Will stood up as soon as he saw Kalinda at his door. "Our people? Are they alright?"

Kalinda nodded, "They are. Our people are fine." she assured him.

"Thank god." Will ran a hand through his hair, relieved, "What the hell happened there? What do you know?"

"There is one casualty. Originally they reported two, but it is just one, plus the shooter. He was a disgruntled former employee of the defendant in a case being heard today. We don't know how he got the gun in, it sounds like he stashed it in a bathroom."

"Jesus." Will nodded as he digested the information. Any given day, dozens of his lawyers, his staff were in and our of that courthouse, it was a miracle that none of them were injured. "Who was it? Do we know them?"

"We do." Kalinda nodded.

"Are you going to tell me? Who was it? Patty? Louis Canning? Am I happy? Am I sad? Should I be calling clients?"

"Peter Florrick."

"I'm sorry what?" WIll repeated.

"Peter Florrick is dead."
