They had went from a conversation about Papyrus' seemingly irrational fear to him begging for death. That escalated very quickly and needless to say, everyone was surprised.
"What?!" Undyne yelled. Sans, on the other hand, didn't say a word.
Papyrus knew he was going to start crying. "Kill me... kill me, please..."
"No! Why would we-" The hero was interrupted by her friend's voice getting louder.
"Please, please kill me!"
He was sobbing now.
Sans still wasn't talking, but he managed to stop standing in one place. He put his hand on his brother's shoulder, too scared to make eye contact.
Papyrus fell to the ground.
Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, he was hurt-
No. He wasn't hurt. Just... lost. He was so sad that he couldn't stand standing. Haha... that was a good one...
Sans kneeled down. A million questions were running through his mind. 'Why didn't he tell me this? How long has this been going on? Has he tried killing himself before? Why is he just laying there? What am I supposed to do?' But the most prominent question was, 'Is he going to be okay?'
Sans found his voice, and he held onto his brother. "Papyrus," he whispered.
Undyne too, was on the ground, hugging the troubled soul.
The soul was trapped, alone, lost...
The soul needed out.
It didn't matter that he was too scared to actually do anything, for it was happening already. Papyrus was super anxious- he was on the floor, for Heaven's sake!- and it wouldn't be too long until his heart was beating too fast. As long as he laid there, miserable, it all would end.
His friends were pulling him up. Making him stand. 'No, what are you doing?! Just let me die!' he thought.
His friends were hugging him tightly and telling him
they loved him.
All the weeping skeleton wanted them to know was that he loved them also, but he wished they would stop trying to rescue him from whatever had been happening. Even if it wasn't death, it was good, and he was sure of that. But his friends begged to differ.
Papyrus wanted to die, but it seemed his friends wouldn't let him.
Papyrus now sat next to Undyne on the living room couch. Sans was in another room.
"I'm sorry Papyrus," Sans told himself, "I know you didn't want to see him today but..." He called someone. "Hello? Stone Edge? Yep, it's Sans. Listen, we uh, got a situation."
5 minutes, and Papyrus had told Undyne nothing. 5 minutes of Undyne explaining how good of a friend he was, how he should have told her sooner, how scared she was when that happened, and Papyrus said nothing. He couldn't. He had made a huge mistake. His friends had been filled with dread and terror, all because he was stupid enough to let his feelings get to him. Deep down, he knew he couldn't control that, but he still felt very responsible.
He also wanted to sleep. And not wake up.
Then Stone Edge entered the house. "Hi, Papyrus. Sans told me what happened," The board with his abnormally skinny arms and legs, just thin lines, sat down at the couch with them.
Despite just meeting the fellow, Undyne saw no problem conversing with Stone Edge. He seemed to be good and helpful. "I've been talking with him, but he hasn't responded," she said.
Stone Edge nodded. Well, as much as someone who didn't really have a head could nod. In fact, the stiff guy couldn't. He had no neck, just a piece of wood for a body and some limbs. Just "nodding" wouldn't work. So he decided to also say, "I see." And then, "Papyrus, do you want to die right now?"
His client was staring at the floor. They seemed to be uncomfortable with this whole thing. "Would you rather we talk in private?" Papyrus nodded.
"No way!" Undyne bellowed, "He can't keep all these secrets from me! Or from Sans, for that matter!"
"It's not that he doesn't trust you. It's just that it's hard to tell people you trust something that may hurt them. He'll tell me, and then he'll tell you when he's ready."
Undyne sighed. "Fine," with that, she walked out of the room.
Papyrus and him were alone. "So, Papyrus?"
"I-I do... I do wanna die..."
"And why's that?"
"I... I'm not sure... but I do... really bad..."
"Hm... how many times do you want to die a day?"
"Well, 2 minimum..."
"Have you ever tried to-"
"Yeah, but only a couple times." Papyrus seemed proud that he hadn't attempted more.
"You should tell your friends that."
"No," Papyrus protested. He couldn't tell them, he just couldn't. How would they even react? All Papyrus knew was that it wouldn't be a good reaction. Maybe it would if he paid attention in Chemistry when he was younger.
"I'll help you tell them."
"But you said I'd tell them when I was ready, and I'm not ready yet."
"Will you ever be ready?"
... Papyrus was learning that this dude wasn't just friendly, he was smart. "Yeah, you got me there."
"So you'll tell them?" The wood smiled.
Papyrus felt the anxiety rise up inside him. His stomach was hurting and he wished everyone would forget he even brought up the topic of death. Even so, he felt... safe with Stone Edge around. Something told him everything would be okay. So he said yes.
"Wonderful." He brought Papyrus' brother and friend in the living room. Papyrus didn't know what the guy was talking about. This wasn't wonderful at all. He couldn't look at their faces, so he stared at the carpet. He started laughing out of nervousness.
"Nyeheh, about the thingy that took place..." The suicidal skeleton took a deep breath, preparing himself."I-it's actually been going on for a while now. Nyehehheh..."
Sans felt Papyrus wasn't being specific enough. "What's been going on for a while now?"
Papyrus started fidgeting with his hands, chuckling every so often. "I've w-wanted to die for a while. I-I may have... tried to a few times."
"Papyrus!" Undyne screamed.
"Yes, that's my name." Papyrus smiled, but then realized his feeble attempt to lighten the mood hadn't worked.
"Papyrus, you need to tell us this stuff!" Undyne continued, ignoring her friend's joke.
Papyrus was gradually getting more uncomfortable. "I-I know." he whimpered, still smiling as if that would make him happier. Then the smile dropped.
Even without seeing his brother's face he could tell what it looked like. It seemed to be frowning, even though that was impossible for a perpetually smiling person to do. "Whydidn't you tell us this?" his sibling asked.
"Nyeh... You know hard that is to do? Can you imagine me going up to you guys and being like, 'Hi, everyone! I wanna die so you need to make sure I don't'? Nyeheheh... that would be awkward. But, I mean this is awkward too."
He cleared his throat. "Guess I should also bring up the dream I had the other night. Nyehheh... I was... yeah, I was killing myself. I... I liked it. I... I need help, don't I?"
It was Stone Edge's turn to talk. "Well, you're getting help right now."
"Yeah."
Papyrus was expecting to hear another question. Another yell or hushed tone displaying just how worried and stressed his pals were. But instead, his brother gave him a gift. Not an actual, physical gift, it was just some words, that he could hear pretty much anytime. But he decided to cherish them. These words were:
"Papyrus, I love you."
Papyrus genuinely laughed. "I-I know you do, brother... I love you too. Please don't worry about me."
"Well, that's going to be pretty hard."
"I know, but I don't like seeing you sad."
"I'll try not to be then,"
Finally, Papyrus found himself looking at his friends instead of the plush carpet. They were still worried, of course- why wouldn't they be?- but now everything felt a little better.
"I told you this would be wonderful. Now, I must be going. I'll see you all. Call me if anything changes." With that, he was gone.
Papyrus decided he liked his therapist. He had made a mistake the first time they met, but who is perfect?
"I love you too, Undyne."
Undyne was grinning that goofy grin again. "Oh, stop being so sappy!"
"You're not even a tree," Sans added.
Another chuckle came from Papyrus' mouth. "You don't know, maybe I am."
