A/N - Hope everyone is doing well! Not a ton of feedback for the last few chapters. Hope I haven't bored ya'll to death with the slow burn. Thanks for continuing to read!

Emily drove the girls back to Rosewood that Sunday evening with a lot on her mind. The day had confirmed to her some thoughts that had been swirling around in her head for weeks now. She realized that she hadn't just missed Alison in the time that she was away, she missed the blonde in general. She missed what it was like for the four of them to be together and do things as a family. When it came down to whether she wanted to spend her Sunday afternoon with her girlfriend or her ex-wife and daughters, it wasn't even a question of which she preferred.
Those realizations were what defined her interactions with Casey moving forward.
Alison hadn't been happy to hear that Emily and Casey were still together. She'd spent such a great day with Emily and their daughters. Part of the reason she had pushed Emily for information was because she really didn't think that they were still together. Emily's demeanor with her had shifted noticeably in the past few weeks. Maybe Alison had read too much into it, but Emily seemed like she was pretty focused on her. She understood that Emily was going to give Casey a second chance after her actions came to light, but unlike before, Alison decided that she wasn't just going to step to the side.
She'd really been considering what moving on meant in the last few months. Originally, she thought that it meant that she had to date someone. When that hadn't worked, she thought that enabling Emily to move on would force her to do the same. Neither of those had worked, though. It was clear to her that she couldn't move on when things felt unfinished between them. She wasn't sure where this path would lead, but her heart felt excited at the prospect of finding out.
Despite the discouraging information, she decided not to step back. She continued to talk to the brunette on the phone at night after their daughters went to sleep. It always brought a smile to her face before she went to bed. They'd share silly stories about Lily and Grace and keep each other in the loop of their daily activities. These were things that had been off of Alison's radar the last few months and she was happy to get back into it.
One night the following week, she was sitting at home feeling bored around dinnertime and she spontaneously drove out to Rosewood to visit Emily and the girls. She knew that it was a little risky, because she didn't call first. She stopped on her way and picked up a blackberry cobbler from one of her favorite markets, deciding that it would make a good excuse.
Emily opened the door in complete surprise. "What are you doing here?" She smiled at the blonde.
And Alison could see it on her face- the brunette was happy to see her. It wasn't a tentative smile or one that you plaster on your face when you feel confused and don't know how to react. This smile stretched all the way to her dark brown eyes. Alison knew a real smile from Emily when she saw one. "I was in the neighborhood and just wanted to say hi and bring you guys something," She offered the cobbler with a dimpled grin.
Emily felt her heart pick up at how sweet it was for her to stop by. They'd been talking for the last few nights, but she wasn't sure if Alison was upset with her given their last in person interaction. It was good to see her, though. She looked nice. Emily had meant what she said about Alison getting the best tan of her life on her trip. Her skin looked like it was glowing and complimented her sparkling blue eyes. Emily noted that she was wearing make up. Had she been somewhere before this or did Alison get dressed up just for this occasion? Either way, she liked it.
Alison stared at the brunette. Emily looked like she was going to say something, but didn't. So Alison asked, "Are you guys busy? Or could I come in?"
Emily looked surprised, "No- I mean we're not busy," she moved aside with a smile, "definitely come in."
Alison smiled and walked inside. Lily and Grace looked up from the television and ran over to the entrance to greet her, excited to see her after only a few days. They all followed Emily into the kitchen, looking forward to trying the cobbler that Alison had brought.
After Emily served the twins and sat them down at the table she made her way back to Alison. "So any reason for stopping by? Besides to come bearing gifts?" She joked.
Alison chuckled and then shrugged, "Not really. Rosemont just gets… I don't know. Kind of lonely sometimes I guess?"
Emily felt her brows knit together at the information. She hadn't thought much about it, but it must be pretty lonely for Alison to spend the weekdays in the summer alone in Rosemont. She probably didn't have a ton of friends outside of work. When Emily didn't have the girls, it was only for two days and there were plenty of people in Rosewood that she could call to do something social. She didn't want Alison to feel lonely. "Well you can come here anytime," she told the blonde.
"Thanks," Alison felt her lips curl up in a smile. She hadn't meant to get all sad puppy on Emily. She really did get lonely in Rosemont, but her visit was more because she wanted to see Emily and the twins. She didn't want to be social with just anyone.
Emily put the cobbler in the fridge and turned back to Alison, "We were actually getting ready to watch a movie before it was time for them to go to bed. Want to join?"
"You don't mind?"
"No," Emily answered quickly with a shake of the head and another smile, "It'll be nice."
So Alison agreed. Truthfully this was what she wanted- to spend time with the three of them.
The communication continued after that. The following week, Emily invited her to the end of Summer banquet for the swim team. Alison was surprised at the invite, but jumped at the chance to go. Emily had offered for them to meet at the house and go together, which was an added bonus because it meant that Alison wouldn't have to show up alone. It felt nice to be included. She watched Lily and Grace get their summer participant ribbons. They were still working on their endurance, but had done a few more exhibition events this summer. Emily had mentioned that she was hopeful that by next summer, she could start teaching them different strokes. When they got back that night, she didn't leave right away. Emily told her that she could stay and they all hung out and they put the twins to bed together. It felt right when it was the four of them and it brought Alison a lot of happiness that she had been missing for the last few months.
She decided to return the favor to Emily. On Thursday night when they talked about arrangements for the girls, Alison offered for Emily to stay and have dinner with them when she came to drop off the girls. Emily took her up on it, but promised to make dinner on Sunday when Alison brought the girls back.
The pattern continued through August and the end of Summer. Alison didn't know what Emily's relationship status was because the brunette never mentioned anything. She certainly didn't act like she had a girlfriend when she was with Alison. When they were together, Emily was always giving her smiles and teasing comments, almost like she was flirting. She never made moves to get off of the phone, even when Alison kept her on late at night. If Alison invited her anywhere, she never declined. Emily's positive reception to Alison trying to spend more time with her felt good. She found that she missed the brunette when she wasn't with her and the girls. She felt herself wanting to push things further.
There was an energy that always seemed to be floating between them whenever they were together. When they were younger, it was an attraction to one another. Alison had always wondered if she'd ever act on her feelings, while Emily wondered if Alison felt the same way. When they were together, that attraction was expressed in the open love that they shared with one another. When Alison thought back to the time in her life when she was her most happy, it was when she an Emily were together and she was able to act on that attraction whenever she wanted. And she did. After the divorce, though, it is hadn't gone away, but it was like there was a fence separating her feelings and actions. That fence kept her from crossing into murky territory. She didn't want to cross a line and ruin her relationship with the brunette. In the past month, however, that fence seemed smaller, less visible. It didn't seem like it had barbed wire around it and would be dangerous to cross. She'd stopped herself from crossing it several times, but she felt her resistance dwindling.
The twins were set to start Kindergarten at the end of August and everyone was gearing up for the big day. The week before, Emily took the girls shopping for new backpacks and lunch boxes. In turn, Alison had taken them for school supplies over the weekend. Emily had invited Alison to stay over on Sunday night before the twins first day of school so that they could both experience the next morning together with the girls as a family.
Alison approached the front door with the twins, all three of them holding bags of school supplies that they purchased over the weekend. She freed one of her fingers and rang the doorbell.
Emily opened the door after a minute and took in the sight. "Were the school supply lists that long?" She cocked an eyebrow. She'd emailed Alison the official list of supplies provided by the school earlier that week. Emily had glanced at it briefly and saw the normal items: pencils, erasers, a set of crayons, a box of tissues. There had to be six or seven bags here.
"It's a long story," Alison huffed. They'd gone to the store and she'd gotten hoodwinked into buying all types of things that weren't on the list. Colored pencils, giant animal shaped erasers, a random coloring book of the 50 States. She was pretty sure here daughters didn't even know what a 'state' was, but she'd let them throw it in the cart anyway.
Emily snorted, "Sounds like someone can't say no." This was typical banter for them. It was a fun rhythm that they'd gotten back into it and Emily loved that so much of the tension that had been around the last few years had faded.
Alison glared at her. She readjusted the bags in her hands. Emily pushed her lips together and tried to hold back a smile. It seemed like it had been a debacle buying school supplies and she didn't want to give the blonde too much grief. She took two of the bags from her and the four of them walked inside.
They spent the next hour doing show and tell as Lily and Grace pulled each item out of the bags to show Emily. Alison rolled her eyes when they pulled out items such a the furry bear shaped pencil holders, and the emoji covered pencil sharpeners. In truth, she didn't regret buying any of it. Sure, maybe she'd spoiled them a little bit, but at the end of the day they were good kids and it made them happy. And seeing them happy made her happy. Emily knew that was the case, but she couldn't help teasing the blonde.
"Who knew you were such a pushover," Emily bumped Alison's shoulder with her own once they'd sent the girls to go get washed up for dinner.
Alison tried to hide her smile, but her dimples gave it away. She shook her head, "Well, on the bright side, we won't be replacing pencils and folders every couple of weeks."
Emily laughed, "Oh so that was your excuse?"
"Shut up," the blonde smiled.
A beat of silence passed. Emily couldn't believe that that they were sitting here discussing school supplies and that tomorrow Lily and Grace were starting kindergarten already. It literally seemed like just yesterday that they were babies and she was up every hour at night trying to shush their crying. "Can you believe it?" she asked seriously.
Alison picked up on her tone and knew instinctively what she was referring to. She'd struggled with the same disbelief all weekend. How were their babies already five years old and going to school?
She shook her head. "No, I can't." They both stayed silent in thought. Alison spoke again, "I'm sad." Her relationship with her daughters was wonderful now, but she wondered how time had gone by so quickly. Had she missed things?
Emily tilted her head and studied the blonde. She pushed her lips together to keep from laughing, but couldn't help feel a little bit amused. "You're not going to be one of those moms crying outside of the school tomorrow, are you?"
"No..." Alison played it could cool, but Emily could tell it was an act.
She'd never tell Ali, but she'd gone home the day that she dropped the twins off at preschool two years ago and sobbed for over an hour. Her mom had offered to go with her, but she'd opted to take them to school alone. She'd snapped a picture and texted Alison and gone home feeling empty. She wished that they could have experienced that day together and she knew that Alison probably wished the same.
"Come here," she put her hand behind Alison's elbow and pulled her in lightly for a loose hug. She didn't want to cross any lines, because they still had all night together. Still though, she didn't want the blonde to be sad the whole time.
Alison let herself relax into the hug. It felt warm and comforting. She needed that right now. She knew that technically Lily and Grace had been going to 'school' now for two years, but kindergarten was a milestone. They were growing up so fast, and it made her realize how much time had passed since being pregnant with them. Since she and Emily had been together.
They were both startled as the oven started beeping, signaling that dinner was finished. When they parted, Emily walked over to the wine rack, grabbing a bottle and a glass. She set it down next to Alison and moved to get the food from the oven.
"What's that for?" Alison asked.
"I think you need to relax a little," Emily told her.
"Rude," Alison snorted. Emily chuckled across the room. "You have to have a glass with me then," she told the brunette.
"Sure," Emily shrugged. She walked around the corner to the living room, "Girls, can you go wash your hands for dinner?" The twins glanced up from the game that they were playing together. They both looked like they wanted to object, but Emily raises her brows at them before they could say anything. They both scampered away to the wash room as directed. She walked back into the kitchen and finished seasoning the casserole.
"How come they always listen to you the first time you tell them to do something," the blonde asked.
"It's that military family background. I'm very commanding." Emily tried to play it off serious, despite mostly joking.
"Mhm," Alison narrowed her eyes. Emily was very commanding, but not in a militant way. Though the idea of acting that out sometime was enticing, thought . She cleared her throat and tried to take her mind out of the gutter. She moved across the kitchen to grab some plates to put on the table.
Dinner went smoothly. The twins ate their food and afterwards Emily and Alison helped them get everything ready for the next day. Emily took the lunch boxes in the kitchen and set them on the counter. "I've never actually had to pack them a lunch before," she noted out loud.
"What are you packing for them?" Alison asked.
"Um…" Emily pinched her brows and called out to the living room, "Girls, ham or turkey sandwiches tomorrow?"
"Ham!" Grace called right away.
Lily thought for a second and responded, "Turkey!"
Emily rolled her eyes and shook her head, "Of course they had to be different."
Alison laughed, "You say I'm the pushover. Why don't you just tell them what they're having instead of asking them? What happened to being so commanding?" she joked.
"Whatever," Emily laughed at herself. Next time she would just make the sandwiches and let the girls guess. "Ready to get them to bed?"
Alison nodded. They walked the girls upstairs and took them through their bedtime routine. Each twin read one short book, and had tired themselves out once the ordeal was over. They were getting close to letting the girls read independently before bed.
Once they were asleep, Emily and Alison went back downstairs. They each poured themselves another glass of wine and then migrated to the living room together to sit on the couch. They didn't say much, both women were stuck in their own trains of thought.
Emily thought about how nice tonight had been. The eve of the first day of kindergarten should have been stressful. Sh had been a nervous wreck two years ago before they started preschool. She's spent hours pacing the house, checking their little backpacks, peaking in to their room to make sure that they were really sleeping, and just generally going through every scenario. Really it was that she was sad that they were going off into the world. Out of the house that had become their little home Just like Alison had the year before. Emily hadn't even fully adjusted to being without her partner and it had felt like things were changing again. It had been a lot for her.
Tonight had been different though. From the moment that Alison and the twins stepped inside of that house, Emily had felt a sense of comfort and calmness. She felt a little sense of disbelief that her daughters were already starting kindergarten, but she felt prepared for it because this time Alison was at her side. Her heart had felt warm all night as they took turns teasing each other. She found it endearing that Alison was sad that it was time to send their babies off to school. She loved the way that their family felt whole again.
It was nights like this when she wondered why she had ever thought that it might be a good idea to try to bring another significant other into the picture. Her picture had everything in it that she needed right now.
Alison looked over and took in Emily. The brunette was staring into her wine glass with a tiny smile playing on her face. Alison couldn't help but follow suite and smile herself. "What are you thinking about?" She asked.
Emily turned to her and shrugged a single should nonchalantly. "I had a nice night tonight," she said. "I think I'm ready for their big day tomorrow."
Alison felt the same way. It had been a nice night. She and Emily had really hit their stride again this last month and she loved the way that they had been weaving themselves into each other's lives better.
Still though, she felt tempted to tease the brunette. Her grin deepened, "Oh you're ready for their big day? Hopefully they are too."
"They are," Emily nodded confidently.
Alison swirled her wine for a moment. Lily and Grace were definitely ready. They had made so many friends in their pre-kindergarten class last year and most of those kids would be moving on with them. They were generally well-behaved and had made it all of last year without any teacher complaints. Intelligence-wise, they were definitely ready. Tonight, both girls had read confidently and correctly, and they were even better with their numbers. She'd worked a lot with them over the last year, but there was no way that she could take credit for how good of kids the twins were.
She looked back at Emily. Her smile had softened, "You've done such a good job with them."
Emily eyed her. Her initial reaction was to object, because it hadn't been just her. Whether or not Alison had been gone for nearly two years, she was still just as formative in their lives. At the same time, though, she appreciated the compliment. She'd dedicated so much of her time and energy to her daughters, but she wouldn't change a thing and had never once regretted being a mother- let alone sometimes a single mother. It was nice to hear someone vocalize it, especially Alison. She smiled back and accepted the compliment, "Thank you."
Alison nodded. She meant it. No matter what ever happened between the two of them, she couldn't think of a better person to be the other parent of her daughters. Emily was amazing with them, she'd been wonderful since day one.
Emily noticed that the blonde seemed lost in thought. She reached over and touched her arm, "They wouldn't be who they are are without you either, you know?"
Alison shrugged and pushed her lips together. She couldn't quite look at Emily. She did her best to stay in their lives while she was away and made sure to do all of the right things when they were with her on the weekends, but she didn't really think it held a candle to all of the work that Emily had done over the years.
Emily ducked her head, trying to meet her gaze. They had a few rough years, but part of what Emily had worked hard on in therapy was being able to let that go of that. To forgive. To move forward.
She knew that Alison still had her insecurities, and Emily wished that she didn't. Alison's presence last year had made Emily's life not only easier, but so, so much better. Seeing her regularly and rebuilding their relationship had settled Emily and brought her a peace that she had been seeking for a while. She tightened her hold on Alison's arm. "I mean it. You're a great Mom, Ali," She told the blonde earnestly.
"You really think so?" Alison asked. She glanced down at Emily's fingers wrapped around her forearm. Her hands and fingers were so familiar to Alison. All of Emily was familiar to her. She felt warm inside, partially from the wine, partially from the physical touch. She brought her gaze back up to the brunette, staring into her brown eyes. She hoped that her expression wasn't pleading, but she wanted what Emily had said to be true. So badly.
Emily held her gaze for a moment. She wanted her to know that she wasn't just being nice and saying what she thought Alison wanted to hear. She nodded, "I know so."
Alison could see in her eyes that Emily was telling the truth. She could always read her well. Emily could lie to other people, but Alison could always tell when she looked into the brunette's eyes. It was how she knew that her marriage was really over years ago. She saw all hope and willingness leave Emily's eyes over their last few months together.
She could see that hope now though. She glanced back down at Emily's hand so close to her hers. She wanted to scoot over. She wanted to lean in closer. She wanted to feel more of Emily on her.
She brought herself back to reality instead and leaned back slightly before she did something that both of them may or may not be ready for. Emily released her grip, picking up on Alison seemingly distancing herself. Alison looked around the room, needing to change the subject. Her eyes landed on a thick book on the lower shelf of the coffee table. She bent over, placing her wine glass onto the table, and picked up the book.
She smiled and held it up to Emily, "When did you bring this back out?" It was a scrap book of Lily and Grace's first year, full of photos and mementos that carried so many memories for both of them.
"The girls brought it out while you were on your trip," she told Alison with a small smile. It was the truth, but Emily had kept it out now for over a month. She'd been nostalgic lately, and had found herself paging through it sometimes at night after she put the girls to bed. The book was full of so many happy memories. She loved looking back and reminiscing.
Alison accepted the explanation. She opened the book and started to page through it. She smiled at the memories. It started with photos of Alison and Emily in the hospital with the girls, holding their newborns for the first time. There were picture of Lily and Grace as babies in their cribs, bouncers, and high chairs. There was a photo of Alison holding Grace when she was four months old at Halloween, dressed in a pumpkin costume. She remembered that Emily had wanted to dress them up as little burritos while Alison wanted to dress them up as strawberries. In the end, they saw these cute little pumpkin costumes and both agreed on them. She shook her head as she turned more pages. There was a photo of Emily holding Lily in the same club chair that was sitting across the room now. She took in the background of the photo. The lamp on the side table was the same then as it was now. The vase on the fireplace mantle hadn't moved. It felt like that moment could exist at this very moment.
She looked at the brunette with her brows pinched slightly. She'd wanted to ask for a long time, but had always strayed from the topic. She hadn't been sure what kind of answer she'd get. Now, though, she wanted to know. "Why haven't you changed anything in the house?"
Emily tilted her head, "What do you mean."
Alison pointed down at the photo that she had been eyeing, "I mean the living room, everything else. It's exactly the same now it was five years ago… why haven't you changed anything? The only room that you re-did is the one that you sleep in."
"Well, I changed that one to make it my room," she twisted her lips a little and shrugged, "the rest isn't really mine to change."
"This is your house," Alison pointed out.
Emily shook her head, "It's not though. I mean legally, I guess, but…"
"But what? You live here. Do you think you can't change anything?"
"I know that I could if I wanted to."
"But you don't want to?" Alison asked.
Emily shrugged again, "No, not really."
"Why though?" She didn't get it. When her Father left her at home and moved out when she was eighteen, the first thing that she did was purchase new furniture and make the house hers. After Emily moved in, she had donated the bed that she shared with Archer and bought a new one for the two of them. She'd left anything non-essential in Beacon Heights and furnished her apartment in Rosemont with all new things. It was therapeutic for her. It helped her move on. She wondered why Emily didn't do the same when their relationship ended three years ago.
"I just don't want to change it. I like it the way that it was. It's like that book… there are so many good memories in it. There are memories here, all over this house. My memories, Lily and Grace's, yours… memories of our family."
Alison put the book on the table and directed her attention to the other woman. She leaned her body towards her, trying to seek out her eyes, but Emily wouldn't meet them. She though for a moment and asked, "Do you feel like if you change anything you'll lose those memories?"
Emily shook her head. She let her eyes wonder the room, looking at the various pieces of furniture, decorations on the walls, trinkets on the end table.
"What is it then?"
The brunette took a breath and finally met her gaze. "I don't want those memories to be a part of my past." Her confession was quiet and Alison had to lean closer to hear what she was saying. "I'm just not ready to say goodbye to that part of my life yet."
Before she could think twice and stop herself, Alison let body move forward and inch closer to the brunette. She couldn't ignore the way that her heart was pounding anymore. How much every part of her just wanted to be closer and feel Emily. She didn't want to put those memories away either. She wanted them to be a part of her. She wanted to make more. So she kept leaning in towards Emily, on the same couch that she'd kissed her on the night that she'd told the other girl that she was pregnant.
Emily saw her moving in closer and did nothing to stop her. She'd felt the energy shift earlier. She'd felt something pulling her heart in the blonde's direction. There was no way that she was willing to physically put a stop to it.
Alison touched her lips softly against Emily's. She felt a warm feeling rush through her entire body at the contact. The brunette's lips responded almost immediately and that was all that she needed to continue. She moved her lips against the other girl's confidently and with purpose.
She was engulfed in a familiar scent. She hadn't gotten this close to Emily many times in the last couple of years, but whenever she did her mind flooded back to the days when they were together. It was intoxicating and spurred her on even further. She wanted more, she needed to get closer. She opened her mouth slightly and ran her tongue against Emily's lips. Her body was begging to taste the brunette.
Emily opened her mouth, but surprised Alison by slipping her own tongue into her mouth. She mirrored Alison's confidence and it caused the blonde to whimper into her mouth at the feeling. This had been everything that she'd wanted for so long. Every coherent thought flew out of her head and was halfway around the world by this point. She slid her body closer, reaching the other girl, desperate deepen the kiss even further.
But she didn't realize that Emily was still holding her wine and that in pulling her lower, she was also tipping the glass.
Emily didn't realize either until she felt the red wine hit her foot as it spilled onto the hardwood. She pulled back quickly and looked down at the wine on the floor. It took her a minute. Her head was foggy and she could still feel Alison's lips against hers. She glanced up at the blonde with wide eyes and looked down at the mess again.
"Oh my god. I'm so sorry," Alison's apology came out rushed. She jumped up and flew to the kitchen to get something to clean up the spill. Luckily, with two small children living there, the house had seen its fair share of messes the last couple of years. The real mess that she was worried about what the potential one that she'd caused by pushing the boundaries and kissing Emily. At the time, she felt like she couldn't help herself, it felt like gravity. Like there was no other option other than to do it.
But what if she was ruining everything that they'd spent the last year building? Emily was dating someone. She was being nice to Alison by letting her be extra involved with the twins lately. Had she read too much into it? She walked back into the living room with a wet rag and moved to clean the floor.
Emily was standing in front of the couch and reached out for the rag, "I can-"
"No, I've got it. I can fix it." The blonde went down to wipe up the mess.
Emily was a little at a a loss. Not just because she wasn't sure what to do, but because she missed the feeling of Alison's lips against hers. She'd wanted that kiss just as badly. She hated that it had stopped so abruptly. She walked into the kitchen and grabbed some paper towels to dry the floor. When she got back, she kneeled down next to the blonde and tried to help. "That was completely my fault. Here, let me finish."
Alison got out of the way. She took a few steps back and awkwardly stood there as Emily dried the floor. She felt like she'd pushed things too far. She felt nervous and embarrassed for some reason. Emily had let her back into her life and Alison had taken it too far. They weren't seventeen anymore, her actions had consequences.
"There," the brunette stood up, holding the paper towel and empty glass, "Good as new." She tried to give a small smile, but it was tentative and came out looking unsure.
Alison nodded, but her flight mode was going into full swing. She didn't want to do anything too rash, but she needed some time to herself. She needed to think.
"I think I should probably go to bed," she told Emily.
The brunette cocked an eyebrow. She'd wanted the kiss just as badly. Why was Alison cutting the night short? But Emily didn't say anything. She just stared back at the blonde, unsure of how things had gone from 0 to 100 and back down 0 within just a couple minutes.
"Goodnight." The blonde nodded, more to herself, and ducked into the guest room that she was staying in.
Emily stood by herself. She blinked. What the hell just happened?
