Chapter 72
Erin gently lay Tegan down on the floor and took her face in her hands. "Tegan... Tegan are you okay" she asked loudly and shook Tegan's shoulders. Tegan still seemed out of it, her head rolled to the side and her eyes closed. "No Tegan, come on, wake up" said Erin panicked. Loud knocks could be heard on the door. The door was broken down by two firemen and Kate, Arizona, the medics and some cops entered swiftly. "I've got Tegan, you take the girl" said Kate. Arizona already had a syringe ready and hastily knelt down next to Sara lying on the ground still holding the girl tightly with both her arms. Sara's nose was bleeding profusely after the girl's head hit it in the fall. Arizona injected the sedative into Carmen's arm in one quick, swift action. Sara felt the girl give two more weak kicks and then go limp in her arms. She was still hanging on tightly. "It's okay Sara... you can let her go... let her go" said Arizona. Sara rolled the girl off her and jumped up as fast as she could. "Sara hang on you're bleeding" yelled Arizona but Sara was already at Tegan's side.
Kate immediately had her finger on Tegan's neck searching for a pulse "Not again Tegan..." she whispered. "Pulse is 120, Tyler get me a BP and a line" she said as she shone a penlight into Tegan's eyes. "Pupils 4mm equal and reactive" she reported. "Should I pick up her legs again" asked Sara looking scared. "Yes please" said Kate. Sara picked up her sister's legs and held them to her stomach. "Wake up Tee" she whispered. Blood was still seeping out of her nose slowly. One of the firemen offered to take over but Sara shunned him away. "M'am please let me do this, you're shaking... please sit down you need to stop that nosebleed" Sara looked at him dazed and put her hand to her nose and looked at it covered in blood, she never even realised her nose was bleeding. "Okay..." she said softly as he took Tegan's legs in his arms. "BPs low – 60 over 40" reported Tyler. Tegan's breathing was shallow and in came in the form of small gasps. "100% O2 please, non-rebreather" said Kate calmly. Tyler started an IV and Kate injected something into it. "There we go... BP coming up nicely. Wakey wakey buddy... She's just radiating heat, let's send some cooled saline into her and we should probably move her into the shade in a sec" said Kate. Tegan didn't look pale this time, her face was flush. Two firemen held up a spring up shade wall and held it up so that Tegan was in the shade. Kate took the stethoscope and listened to Tegan's chest. Pulse very rapid and she's struggling to normalise her breathing. Ambubag please" said Kate calm as ever. Another paramedic was with Sara now trying to stop her nose bleed that was now squirting out in pace with her pulse. Sara sat on the floor with her head thrown back. "Boone, are you managing to control that nosebleed?" asked Kate looking slightly concerned. "Yeah, we're getting there" he answered. He held an ice pack on her nose and one at the back of her neck, Sara held a towel to her nose. "Is she... Kate... Kate!.. is Tegan okay?" said Sara lifting the towel and coughed as some of the blood went down the back of her throat. "Don't worry Sara. She's going to be just fine. Just relax and do what Boone tells you to do" said Kate. Kate put the mask and ambubag over Tegan's mouth and nose. "Tyler, bag her up... " she said. She took a bottle of water out of the bag and poured it over Tegan's face. "Let's cool you down bud" she said. A few seconds later Tegan's eyes opened up and she coughed.
"Thank God" breathed Erin. "Hey Tegan... we need to stop meeting like this" said Kate. Tegan tied to push Tyler's hand away as he was trying to deliver air into her lungs. She looked agitated. "Don't do that Tegan... Tyler's just going to HELP you breathe for a minute or so okay... just till we get your breathing closer to normal. Don't fight it. Just go with it" said Kate sternly. Tegan seemed to want to sit up but Kate calmly held her down with one hand. "Carmen's okay Tegan, they're taking care of her. Stay calm" said Kate.
Tegan turned her neck to look at Carmen that had already been put on a gurney, ready to be transported. Arizona walked over to Tegan and gave her a pat on the arm. She looked at her and then Sara and Erin. "You guys did good... you saved her life. We're going to get her help" she smiled and led the medics downstairs. Sara's nose bleed seemed to finally be under control and the medic made her lay back with her head on a blanket. Tegan seemed to relax, she let Tyler gently squeeze air into her lungs. "There we go Tegan, good job... in... and out... in... and out.." said Tyler softly. It felt good not to struggle for breath. After a few minutes of treatment and bagging Tegan was allowed to breathe on her own again, she was relieved to find that after some meds it was a lot easier. The heat however, was really getting to her and she felt nauseous. "Ugh it's hot! So fucking boiling" said Tegan under the oxygen mask. "Relax Tegan... we're going to take you to the hospital now to have you checked out. And by the way, you two are late for your follow up appointments." said Kate and shook her head mockingly while putting some ice packs under Tegan's neck and arms.
"You're smiling... does that mean Tegan's okay" asked Erin where she was kneeling next to Tegan's head. "I think she's going to be fine yes, but of course I want to have her checked out at the hospital, all of you in fact" said Kate. Tegan sighed under the oxygen mask "Here we go again" she said. "Hey you chose to play hero today..." said Kate and shook her head. "Okay guys let's get her out of here". A paramedic wanted to put Sara on a gurney but she refused point blank. "I'm fine thanks... no... no! I'm fine really" she said. Sara felt light headed from the loss of blood and regretted not taking up the offer of a ride down as she stood with her eyes closed clinging to Tegan's gurney in the elevator. Tegan looked up at Sara's face still stained pink with blood. "You okay there Sar?" she asked softly. "Uh huh... just a bit shaken up" said Sara trying to steady herself.
