Chapter 18 Dimberries and Rapunzel's first enemy

Cassandra gasp as she looks at a pocket watch in her hand. "Two hours to the big race. Chow o' clock." Cassandra grabs the white dish. Then frowns. "Eugene, did you eat all the bimberries?" She asked Rapunzel's Boyfriend. "No! No, of course not." He said as Valor noticed a purple stain on his teeth. "Then what's that stain on your teeth then?" Eugene tried to hide his mouth. "Stain? What stain?"

Both Valor and Cassandra glare at him. Eugene looks at them. "Okay, so I ate some. I offered to split. Is that a big problem?" He asked. Laughing wryly. "Okay, well, let's think." Cassandra hands the empty dish to Valor. "If Gregorio doesn't get his bimberries before the race, he'll be lethargic, and if he doesn't want to run, the Gopher Grab will be ruined, and I CAN'T HAVE THAT!" Cassandra shouts at him.

"So I'm gonna go with big problem?" Eugene said as Cassandra grabs his collar. "I'd say yes." Valor said. "Find me some bimberries.. now." Cassandra threatens him gritting her teeth. Eugene smiles showing the berry stains on his teeth. "Right, got it." Eugene said making his way out of the tent. "I'll go get you some dimberries. Be right back."

Valor rolls her eyes. Then gasped. "Crap.. sorry Cass, but I got to go. I promised Varian I'd meet in an hour. I don't want to be late." Valor quickly said giving back the food dish. Cassandra sighed. "Your still friends with him?" Valor chuckles. "Yes.. and nothing going change that ever. Look I'll catch up with you guys later." Valor promise and left the tent.

Back at Monty's Shop. Rapunzel was listening as Monty explaining the ribbons on the wall. "And I'm telling you, my great-grandad would have won the Gopher Grab that year, but he was running the wrong way!" As Monty finishes his story they both start to laugh.

"That Grab means a lot to you, huh?" Rapunzel said taking another jelly bean from the jar. "You know, Misty, I've never told this to anyone, but I feel like I can trust you." Monty admits to Rapunzel. "I come from a long line of Gopher Grab champions." Monty takes one of the chocolate Gophers.

"Oh, they used to say that our family had a gift for grab, and it was my dream to carry on our family tradition." Monty explains but then looks down in sadness. "But no matter how hard I tried, that little rascal always managed to slip through my fingers...

He looks over at the photos of the ribbons. ".And while I've admitted out loud before, sometimes, deep down.." he looks at he chocolate Gopher. "..I can't help but feel ashamed." Monty said as he sets the chocolate Gopher down.

Rapunzel rest her hand on his own. Monty looks over with smile. As the princess returns it. "But that's enough of the weepies. Hey, I know. I've got just the thing to cheer us up." Monty said grabbing Rapunzel's hands. Causing Rapunzel to smile.

SPLAT* As Monty three a tomato at Rapunzel well a statue of the princess. "Yes! Right in the royal kisser." He said while laughing then throws it agin. Rapunzel laughs lightly. "Wow. You really don't like the princess." Rapunzle said clearly a bit shocked.

Monty reaches for another tomato. "Well, I wouldn't say I don't like her. But I would say I can't stand her." He throws the tomato in his hand. "Why?" Rapunzel asked exasperatedly but quickly counters her tone. "I mean why?"

She asked him a bit less like herself before he could catch on.

"You wanna know why I don't like her?" Monty asked as he grabs another tomato from the bin. "I don't like the princess because.." then the bell rings interrupting them.

Monty gasp, "it's Gopher Grab time! Come on, Misty. Let's go!" Monty took off. "Uh.. Sure you don't wanna finish that sentence?" Rapunzel asked them hurried after Monty. "You know we could watch the Gopher Grab, but it's also not too late to sign up." Rapunzel said.

Wait. You mean you want me to compete?" Monty asked her. "Ah, trust me, Monty. Sometimes, you just gotta say the heck with it!" Rapunzel said confidently. "Maybe. But I couldn't. No. I mean, I don't even have a partner." Monty said. "Well, guess what. You do now." Monty smiles.

Cassandra pacing. The Gopher Grab was close to starting. "Did someone ask for dimberries?" Eugene asked entering the tent with berries. Cassandra quickly took the dimberries from Eugene. "You sure took your own sweet time getting them. Don't you realize the Gopher Grab is about to Starr any minute now?" Cassandra asked him clearly irritated. *Sigh* "I hope these aren't store-bought." "Well, you know, for someone careless enough to leave poor Gregorio alone with somebody who would eat all his berries, your being really particular." Eugene said only to have Cassandra not paying attention.

Cassandra knelt down holding out a dimberry to Gregorio. "Okay, Gregorio, time to eat." She then began to fed him. "Oh, boy!" Gregorio began to chew slowly. "This could take a minute."

Ladies and gentlemen, it is nearly time for this year's Gopher Grab! The Announcer addresses everyone outside the tent. Loud shouts and applauses rang out.

Cassandra gives him a concern look. "Hey, hey, don't worry. I'll handle it." Eugene promised and ducked out of the tent. Unknown to Cassandra Gregorio's eyes went wacky before turning normal once more.

Valor watches as everyone gathered about for the Gopher Grab. Varian wasn't really paying attention which was fine by her. She didn't quite understand this whole Gopher Grab. It was a weird festival.

Then she watches as Eugene emerges from the main tent. Then climbs onto a crate to address everyone. "Attention, ladies and gentlemen. I know we're all anxious to see Gregorio the gopher do his thing. I know I am." Eugene laughs. "But before we get started, I'd like to say a few words about the true meaning of goodwill." Valor rolls her eyes and looking over to the main tent. 'Hurry up Cass.'

-line break-

"Okay, Gregorio, *sighs* time to, um, get ready. Cassandra said as forgot to get the dish away from the hungry Gopher. "Wow." She laughs. "You are a little hungry guy, aren't you?" Cassandra mange's time take the dish and put him into the white carrier. Gregorio's began bugging out more as she left.

Valor sighs in boredom. Eugene speech was boring yet he was nailing good points. "I mean, you gotta ask, yourself, 'Am I spreading goodwill, or am I spreading good won't'" Sound of the hate opening. Made her grin as Cassandra walks in with the Gopher. Varian who looks up briefly. His light blue eyes lit up.

Valor glances at him and rolls her eyes at him. She elbows him. "Don't stare with that goofy look, it's rude." Valor hissed but went unanswered. Eugene quickly said goodbye and heads to the edge of the ring.

Cassandra made it to the others and holds up Gregorio's pen. Loud cheers rang out. Cassandra then sets down the pen and moves back as the timer began whining down. All Gopher Grabers waited for the Gopher to emerge. As the doors open the referee blew the whistle.

Everyone looks about muttering. Valor made her way closer. Cassandra walked over and looks in. "What the.." then Gregorio rushes out. His eyes where spinning and he looked to be on a sugar rush. 'Uh oh.'

Gregorio began racing about as all Grabers tried to Gregorio. "The Gopher's gone mad!" Someone said. Soon loud cheers and clapping rang out with some stomping there feet. 'Yeah this is too crazy.' Valor notes to herself.

Eugene was laughing. Valor climbs onto the edge of ring looking down at him. "Why are you laughing Eugene?" Valor asked him. "Oh boy!" Gregorio flew over them. "I laughing because you guys really undersold this whole Gopher Grab thing." Eugene grabs handful of berries. "Want some?" He offered Valor who shakes her head no. "I'll pass." "I just don't understand it. Why would Gregorio react to bimberries like this?" Cassandra asked.

Valor narrows her eyes as she watched the craz Gopher. "Hmm. I've seen this before. A rabbit once ate some once, and I had heck of time stopping it. What where those berries call again? Uh..." "Dimberries." "Huh?" Valor looks down at him. "You two mean dimberries right?" Valor's blue eyes widen. Along with Cassandra's gray ones.

"Dim-what?" "No. Bimberries."

"I thought you said."

"Dimberries. No."

"Wait. You mean."

"What do you mean?"

"You've been talking about.."

"GUYS HEADS UP!" Valor shouts as the Gopher once more flew over the two bickering adults. Cassandra glares at Eugene. "These were supposed to be bimberries." Cassandra said clearly frustrated with him.

"You know, for someone who was ceaseless enough to leave.." Gregorio flew over their heads again. Valor sighs watching them with a bored look. "Eugene did you know dimberries cause hyperactivity in rodents?" Valor asked.

"Uh.. yeah. Who doesn't." Cassandra glares at him. Valor rolls her eyes. And jumps down right as she spots. A short man and Rapunzel race off. Valor could just make out Gregorio ahead of them. "Well. This is one strange event for sure."

-line break-

Monty and Rapunzel where now in the forest looking for the rodent. "Look! Rapunzel shouts. *clears throat* "There." They spot the dirt moving as Gregorio dug his way out. They followed after him as he broke free.

Monty and Rapunzel walked to the river bend. "Where did he go?" "Shh!" Monty hushed Rapunzel and points. They looked to see Gregorio on a set of rocks on the rushing river. The Gopher's eyes were stills crazy. "All we gotta do now is hop." "No, no, no, no, let's take that bridge." Rapunzel suggested a safer route. "We'll catch him on the other side." Rapunzel offered.

"Sorry, Misty. I can't take that chance. I think you were right. Sometimes, you just gotta say to heck with it!" Monty said confidently and hurried off after the Gopher. "Monty!" Rapunzel shouts after him.

Monty walks over to the edge. Eyeing the Gopher. He leaps into one of rocks. Gregorio jumps to the next one. "Whoa." He tried you keep his balanced but he miss-stepped and fell into the water. "Monty!"

As he merged he grabs the same rock Gregorio was on. "Forget about me." The current began pulling him down stream. Letting go of the rock. "Get that gopher! No! No, don't forget about me!" He tried to grab the rock again begging for his life. "I was trying to sound brave! It backfired!" He was being pulled to the bridge. "No!" He yells as he thrashed about.

Rapunzel races after him and climbs onto the bridge. She leans on the rails causing some of the pieces to break and fall. Rapunzel watches as they went over the edge of a waterfall. Monty yells as he got closer. Reaching out she grabs his hand. Causing him to dangle over the edge.

Monty continues to panic and scream. "Hold on Monty. I've got you." Rapunzel reissues him as he dangled over the edge. The bridge began to cracking under the weight.

Monty grasp on Rapunzel slipped. He screamed as he began to free fall. Acting quickly. Rapunzel jumps after him. Removing the wig she wraps her long golden hair around the bridge.

As he falls a he lands on a branch but then it too broke and as he fell this time. Rapunzel swooped through the mist catching Monty in mid air. Using her hair they flew back up. Land ungrateful on the ground.

Monty removes part of the long hair away. "Princess Rapunzel?" Monty asked clearly shocked to see the Princess. "Hehe.. surprise." Rapunzel nervously laughs.

Monty sits on a rock with disapproving look and shocked look."Your Majesty, you went through all of this just to win my favor?" He asked Rapunzel. As she finished tying back her 70 foot hair. "I know. I know it's all a little crazy." She removes the orange cloak/dress. Showing her actual clothes underneath. "But I just had to know why you booed me." Rapunzel admits to him.

"Fine." Monty complied. "You wanna know why I booed?" He asked her. "Uh-Huh. Uh-huh." Rapunzel said eagerly. "The seal." Monty said. "Wait. The Goodwill seal?" "Yes, the Goodwill seal." He pulls it out of his pocket. "You redesigned a perfectly good seal."

"I-I'm Sorry." Rapunzel said. Clearly shocked that it was over something like this. "Since you've returned, everything's changed. I mean come on! A royal in bare feet? Pub thugs in castle? The list goes on. It's like you and your free spirit have total disregard for tradition." Monty explains to her.

Silence followed after his rant. Rapunzel gave a downcast look . "And than I realized that, well, maybe that spirit and to-heck-with-it attitude aren't so bad after all." Causing Rapunzel to perk up. "I mean you did inspire me to achieve my life's dream." He pulls back his apron pocket allowing Gregorio to pop up.

"See? I told you that with.."

"..But then." He interprets her. "You put on this deceitful charade and made a complete fool of me!" Monty snaps at her. "Wait. So, are we friends again?" Rapunzel asked him. "Of course not. And we never will be. Because I don't like you. Not everybody has to like everyone, Your Majesty." Monty began walking off.

"You know what?" Monty stops walking. "Now that I'm thinking of it, I don't think I like you so much either. No, no, wait. Wait. I know I don't like you. " Monty turns to face her. "Not friends ?" Rapunzel hold her hand out and smiles. ""Not friends." They shake hands.

-line break-

"All right. All right." Valor stood within the crowd with Varian who was more interested in Cassandra who was on stage with Rapunzel and everyone else. "As you all know, the Gopher Grab is a sacred tradition." King Fredric began. "So, blondie, you feeling okay about how you left things with Monty?" Eugene asked Rapunzel. "Yeah. I mean, you guys were right. I just had to accept that not everyone is gonna like me."

Valor crosses her arms over her chest. A smile on her face. She was glad Rapunzel was able to learn from this. Even if there was an ethical way of doing it. "And the winner of this year's Gopher Grab.." King Fredric opens the scroll. "..is good, old Uncle Monty!" Everyone began clapping and cheering as he walked up. As Rapunzle's father gives him the ribbon. "Boo!" Rapunzel shouts shocking everyone.

"Come on Var, let's go." Valor said half dragging him away. Letting go of him she looks back to Rapunzel and smiles as they finished up the event. 'This was a strange, but eventful day. Kind of glad I came. Maybe Corona isn't cut and dry as I might think.'
