A/N: Hi guys! These next few chapters are going to be a bit Kate heavy. But I really like her character and her storyline and I want to do something with it. Bear with me. I know the medical drama isn't everybody's cup of tea but we'll get back to lots of Tegan and Sara soppiness soon. It's all about the kind of friends they are at the end of the day. Indulge me please! Remember to review!
Chapter 74
"Actually... Sara let's tell her everything now... I just remembered how livid I was when you didn't tell me about what went on with my kids so... We have to tell her" said Tegan and shrugged. Everybody else left the room and left Tegan and Sara to call their mom. Sonia nearly freaked out but Tegan and Sara managed to convince her they were fine and she didn't need to leave Canada again. She, just like Lindsey scolded them for the stunt they pulled but she eventually calmed down.
Kate walked to the on-call room after what had been an unexpectedly rough day. Owen Hunt, the head of trauma came running past her. "Dr Morgan, are you free, we could really use some help in the ER. Multi-car MVA coming in and we're short staffed. Please, I know you're not on duty but I'll owe you one" he said. Kate didn't hesitate for a second and started running towards the ER. Minutes later she was in a trauma gown and goggles awaiting the first patient. The ER doors flew open. "This is Lucy Smith, 19 years old. Severe trauma to the chest and abdomen, unstable pelvis, head lac, GCS is 14. BP is 70 over 50 and dropping" reported the medic. "OK let's lift her, on 3... 1, 2, 3... Hi I'm Dr Morgan, can you tell me your name?" said Kate calmly while shining the penlight into the girls eyes. "Lucy... Smith" said the girl in obvious pain. "Good... do you know where you are right now Lucy?" she asked. "Um... some hospital in LA" said Lucy weakly. "That's right" smiled Kate. "Do you know what day it is?" she asked. Lucy thought for a second. "I don't know... it's Springsteen concert day" she said. "Really? I'm a massive fan! How was it?" said Kate while palpating the girls abdomen and listening to her chest. "It was amazing... I would say... best day ever... but then.. this" she said out of breath and raised her eyebrow. "Okay Lucy we're going to take good care of you, you just stay awake for me" said Kate. She ordered a stack of X-rays, blood tests and drugs. Kate and her team worked feverishly to stabilize Lucy who was in and out of consciousness. "Stay with me Lucy... come on stay awake now. Squeeze my hand Lucy" said Kate slapping her cheek lightly. "Tell me Lucy... what other bands do you like" she said trying to keep her awake. She continued working on her while Lucy talked softly, her voice shaking. The team was yelling medical terms and Lucy seemed petrified. "I love Tegan and Sara... they're my.. they're my... favorite band..." she whispered out of breath. "Really!" exclaimed Kate. "Well you're in luck missy because they're friends of mine. Stay with me and I'll introduce you okay... I promise" smiled Kate and looked at the X-ray concerned. "I... I saw you on TV... with them... and..." said Lucy as her eyes rolled in her head. "Okay Lucy just relax now don't talk anymore" said Kate. "Tell them... tell them they rock... and... can't... wait for... them... sing...again" whispered Lucy. "Hey hey, you're going to tell them yourself okay... hang in there for me. Shhhh" said Kate and pushed the hair out of the girl's bloody face.
Lucy was taken to the OR for emergency surgery. After a grueling 5 hours Kate walked out of post-op looking exhaused. "How's she doing" asked Owen. "She's okay... we managed to stop the bleeding, fix what we could. There were no further complications. She should be fine in a few weeks" said Kate. "Thanks pal, I'll take over her case from here, you go get some rest..." smiled Owen. "Sure, let me just go update her family first. You should come with if you'll be taking over her primary care" said Kate.
Hours later Kate woke up in the on-call room of the hospital. She only had a couple of hours of restless sleep. After a few minutes of staring at the ceiling she got up and took a shower and brushed her teeth. She walked to Tegan's room. She looked on her watch and thought that Tegan was probably awake by now. She stopped at the nurses' station. "Morning ladies... Please give me an update on Tegan?" she asked. "She's just fine... had a kinda rough night though. Woke up a few times with what seemed to be nightmares. Nothing major but her pulse ox and pressure was struggling a little bit so we put her on a mask at 5 liters per minute and we upped her dopamine slightly. She's stable and she's sleeping like a log right now. Should we wake her for breakfast?" asked the nurse. "Let me have a look. I'll let you know about breakfast" said Kate. She entered Tegan's room and looked at her friend sleeping on her back. Tegan looked peaceful. She looked at the heart and BP monitor for a few minutes and then listened to Tegan's chest with her stethoscope, careful not to wake her. She stared at her for a few minutes and then shook her head to snap out of her tired stupor. She walked outside "Don't wake her for breakfast. She needs the rest" she said. "I'll get her something when she wakes up". Arizona looked up from where she was sitting behind the counter. "Morning... I'll buy you a coffee? Looks like you need it" she said. "Thanks" said Kate as Arizona got up. "Nurse... page me if anything changes with Tegan" she said. "Sure thing doc" said the nurse.
"She's very important to you isn't she?" said Arizona as they walked to the cafeteria downstairs. Kate smiled, "Yes... she is. She's very special. And this thing has brought us even closer" she said. "Pity she has a fiance" winked Arizona. "Ooooh my God... NO... no no no..." said Kate looking horrified. "She would drive me up the wall... Don't get me wrong, I love her to bits but romance was never an option there... not even when we were both single. But... she's still one of my very favourite people in the world! I just don't want to kiss her" laughed Kate. "Well that makes you the one lesbian in the world that doesn't" said Arizona. "You think so?" said Kate lifting one eyebrow. "Sure... she's hot, and she's articulate, fun, sensitive" she laughed. "Somebody's got a crush" said Kate with a giggle. Arizona shrugged. "I know she's taken... but a girl can dream right. I'll just admire her from afar" she said and winked. "What about Callie?" asked Kate perplexed. "What about her?... we're good. Look I'm not going to sleep with Tegan I just like to have a crush on her" said Arizona "Like every other lesbian in the world" laughed Kate and Arizona gave her a shove. "I can read the menu without ordering"
