Chapter 23 Stolen Painting
As Stan and Pete stood guard as Giovanni walked up. "Pete look alive. This must be the guy. Look at him." Stan said. "Mister, uh, The Giovanni. The John-vanni.. Johnny-Johnny. Johnny welcome!" Stan said opening the door for him.
"Coran is happy to have you." He said. "Yeah, well, at least someone is happy." Giovanni said walking past them. "Now, where's Princess come si chiama?" She'll be here shortly."
Pete informs him. "The Giovanni, he don't like to wait." He said. "Now leave me here." He dismisses them. "Ah. Maybe The Giovanni he learn something.. by studding how not to paint." They shut the door behind them.

Eugene pulls on his new uniform. Happy and pleased with himself. Valor had stuck around afterworlds. Part of her wanted see if Eugene would truly cut it or not.
Soon Eugene confidently strode into the room. "Hey! Nice!" He said walking towards the Captain. "Reporting for duty Cap." Eugene salutes. "What do you got, huh?" He asked with a chuckle. "Bad guys to be nabbed? Mysteries to be solved? I'm ready for anything." Eugene said. Captain gave a smirk as an idea pops into his head.

"Dungeon duty. Great." Eugene said. As he and the Captain stood in the dungeon. Valor tagged along. "This your post. That main entrance is to remain locked at all times. You are to patrol this entire block every five minutes. Do you understand?"
"Well looks like you one prisoner. So it should be easy." Valor notes. "What! Really Cap, only one prisoner?" Eugene said. "Do you understand?" The Captain repeats.
"Yeah, but I just thought, you know, given my skill set, it would make more sense for me to be running and jumping." "You're not being paid to think, Rider. Every five minutes." Captain turns to leave. "Well, good luck Eugene. You'll need it." "Wait your not staying?" "No, I'm wanna to see what's up withRapunzel before heading back to Old Corona." With that she waved goodbye to Eugene and leaves.

"So, he's a famous painter?" Valor asks. "Yeah, Royal has had their portrait done by him, expressing what makes each queen or king unique." Rapunzel explains. "I see, what explains the mess. Though, it looks like you made up your mind." "Yes. And you don't have to come with me." Valor shrugs. "I kind of want to see what he can do for myself."

Giovanni stood at a easel, as Rapunzel and Valor walks into the room. "Hey, it's about time!" He said. "Sorry, The Giovanni, I was, um.." "The Giovanni, he doesn't care! Now, how you wanna look?" He asks Rapunzel. Valor steps to the side.
"Oh, um. I thought that I would keep it simple." Rapunzel states. "Huh? She gonna pose with nothing?" Then he said something in Italian and hits his forehead. Before shouting. "Don't blame The Giovanni when the painting, she's no good." He said. 'What with him?'
"Oh. Okay." Rapunzel said. "I definitely won't." She promised. But before The Giovanni could start. The door slams open. "The Giovanni. Can I call you The? You're the best." Eugene said entering the room. "Hey, Blondie, I see you went with the simple choice of beautiful." Eugene said.
"Aw! Thank you." Rapunzel said. "At least someone thinks so. Wait. What are you doing here?" Rapunzel quickly ask him. "Valor and Cass said you had dungeon duty." She asked him. "Oh, I do. The Cap told me to walk the block once every five minutes, but it, just seemed like a waste standing there. So, I walked it twice in a row, and now I can take a 10-minute break. Math." He taps his head.
"Yeah, uh, I don't think that's right." Rapunzel said. "Oh, no, no, trust me, Blondie. I worked it out in the old brainium." "No, you need to redo that math calculation. Because that's not how you do it." "Huh? I'm sure I'm right. I did go to school." "Yeah, three days!"
The Giovanni grumbles in annoyance. "You go now!" He shouts to Eugene before saying something in Italian. "What did you say?" Eugene asked. 'Wait? Eugene understands him?'
He continues for a bit. "I can no concentrate." He walks off. "Rider, where are you?" Valor hears the Captain shout outs. Rug even heard him. "You better go, looks like Captain needs ya." Valor said with a grin. "Right then duty calls." Eugene said and quickly leaves.

"He escaped!" Eugene said. As they stood in front of the open cell. "How?" The Captain clearly wasn't happy with him. "Apparently, someone didn't follow regulations and left the main door unlocked, so they could go and visit their girlfriend." Captain said. "Gah! Math!" "And because of your delinquency, the prisoner was able to seize the opportunity to pick his cell lock and escape!" The Captain slams the door closed.
"Uh, I know this look bad." Eugene started. "You bet it does. Turn in your helmet and shield, hotshot. Your off the Guard."

"Aw, I should have just done what I was asked. So stupid!" Eugene said as he and Shorty made his way through the hall. Shorty sniffs a yam the holds it towards Eugene. "Why don't you drown your sorrows in a yam?" "Uh, thanks, buddy, but I filled up on yams earlier." He tells him.
So Shorty took his yam back. "Who wants to be a guard anyway? Right? All those responsibilities and rules. Plus the Captain is a total.." *thud* "Whoa." He said as someone ran into him. So sorry, the Giovanni. Let me help." Eugene offers reaching out to take the object he had dropped.
But the Giovanni quickly snatched it back. And says something in Italian once agin. "Watch where you're going!" Then he hurried off. "Something smells fishy." Eugene said. "That would be me." Shorty pulls a fish from his clothes. Eugene smiles at him.

"You know, Rap, you could have done better." Valor said as the girls looked at the painting the Giovanni painted. 'This doesn't look like a famous painter's work. It looks like painting a child would do.' "Hey, Blondie, Wolfe. Portrait done already. That's great." Eugene walks over acting cheerful. 'Captain must have fired him why else would he act like this.' "That was quick. How do it turn out.. holy horribleness!" Eugene said seeing the painting for the first time.
"I don't know. I don't get it. It's just.. mmm. Really bad. Right?" Rapunzel said. "Well, not really. Young children paint like that. But someone who's world known for his painting. Yep it's terrible." Valor said. "I could do bet..." Eugene looks up to the painting in front to the one hanging. Eugene gasped. "Eugene? What's.." "I got to go see the Captain!" He said running off. "Hey, wait up! Bye Rapunzel see ya around." Valor said and ran after him.
"I'll explain once we get there." He promise. Valor nods in agreement. "Okay."

Eugene slams his ah s down in front of the Captain. Cassandra stood behind him. "Look, Cap, I know I'm not in your good side, but the portrait of Robin XI has been stolen." He declared.
"No, it hasn't. You want to know why it hasn't? Because my men can adhere to procedures. Procedure dictates that the gallery be patrolled every five minutes." Captain said.
"Stan? Pete?" He asks looking at them. Valor glances at Shorty. 'How is he even part of the Guard still?' "Um, sorry Eugene. We just checked two seconds before you arrived. Everything was fine." Pete said.
"But it's a counterfeit!"
"Enough!" The Captain slams his fist down. Get lost before I lock you up." Eugene and party turns to leave. Valor glances back to see Cassandra meeting her gaze. 'She believed him?'
"Come on, Wolfe, Shorty. We're just gonna have to stop him on our own." "Not totally on your own." They turned to see Cassandra behind them. "Cassandra? You believe me?" Eugene asked her astonished by this. "You maybe an arrogant, self-centered, inconsiderate.."

"Tremendous."
"Waste of space."

"Okay, okay, can we just cut to the "but" in this sentence?" Eugene asked. "But, I'm guessing you didn't become a legend by not trusting your gut. So if you say something is not right." Cassandra reluctantly states. "I might believe it."
"Cass, I.."
"..Plus if you are wrong and fall on your face, I'll be one of the first to see it."
"I can work with that. Okay. Come on. I think I know where he's heading." Eugene said taking the lead.
"Uh.. wait what are we doing again?" Shorty said. Valor laughs. "Let me fill ya in."

Back with the Captain. He quick found out Eugene was telling the truth. When his soldiers brought in the real the Giovanni. And the painting was counterfeited. Know I Eugene was right rubbed him the wrong way.

They raced towards the docks. Valor could see the imposter ahead of them. "He's going to try to catch the last ferry out of Corona."
The imposter quickly climbs into the last boat. They speed up. As they drew closer to the end. Valor found herself trying to stop. Max soars over landing on the boat. Next thing Valor knew she was accidentally knocked into the water. The wolf swam up hooking her claws to the dock. Fildia knickers. Looking she spots m Cassandra holding Shorty.
The girls shifts back to human. Coughing she pulls herself up along with Cassandra and Shorty. "I.. hate the water." Valor said moving further away from the edge. It was up to Max and Eugene to catch him.

Eugene and Max broke apart. Each one searching for the thief. As Eugene turns the corner the thief elbows him. This caused Eugene to drop the crossbow. Quickly the thief picks it up. And points it at Eugene. "Arrivederic, baby. I means goodbye." Then pulls the trigger. "Huh?" Nothing followed.
"Crossbow procedure number one m. Always keep the safety on." Then Max appeared kicking him. Sending him and the stolen portrait flying. "On it!" Eugene said running after the portrait. Grabbing a rope he swung catching the before it hit the water. "Yeah! Baby!" He said landing back on the ship.
Valor yelps watching them from afar. "Looks like they are turning around." Cassandra said.
Valor looks to see the Captain, Stan and Pete walking up as the ship pulls back into port.
Max hands the thief back to the Castle Guards, as Eugene went to talk with the Captain. "See, I knew something was up when he cursed me out. His Italian was terrible." He laughs. "Subject-verb agreement was way off." He said. "What I speak Italian. They had stud it steal in Italy too you know." "Hm must be handy. I know how to read Latin but nothing more." Valor said. "I could teach ya." Eugene offered. Valor shook her head. "Thanks but I'm good."
"Anyways the rest was easy to figure out. You see, you gotta think like crook in order to catch one. You just can't teach that m, Cap." Eugene said giving the Captain a pat on the shoulder.
"Perhaps I acted precisely when I dismissed you, Rider." Captain admits. "Ah, let me guess. You want me to join the Guard again. Well I'm flattered, but.." "..Oh, no." He laughs. "Heavens, no! Your a terrible guard, Rider. But I do have something else in mind."
Valor smiles as she looks between them. It was good seeing them finally come to a neutral respect for each other. 'Who knows one day maybe Eugene might end up becoming a great leader yet.'
"Hey, Wolfe we're heading back now, would you like Max and me to escort you to Old Corona?" Eugene asked. Valor walks over to him. "Thanks, but I can manage. I have to make a stop by Xavier's first to pick something up. Which means I gotta go. See you guys around." She waves and runs off.
