Chapter 83
Tegan was tired after a long day of poking and prodding by doctors. Numerous blood tests, ekg's and scans later she was lying on a bed with her knees up waiting for Kate to return with the results. Lindsey held her hand and they talked about Lindsey's ultrasound earlier that day. The babies were doing great and growing fast. Tegan couldn't contain her excitement and showed every staff member in the hospital who looked remotely interested the latest ultrasound images. Lindsey was urged yet again to take it easy and eat well. She wasn't picking up enough weight and it was concerning. She sat in a large, comfortable chair next to Tegan's bed. Lindsey noticed that Tegan looked noticeably tired so she tried her best to slow the conversation down so Tegan could take a nap, even just for a few minutes. Tegan's eyelids slowly fell closed for a few seconds and then opened again numerous times. "Hey... Just relax sweetie... close your eyes" said Lindsey softly. Tegan's eyes closed. Lindsey stared at her "You are so beautiful" she whispered. Tegan's one eye opened mischievously "Kiss me gorgeous" she said. "I thought you were sleeping... sleep!" said Lindsey and kissed her quickly on the lips.
Twenty minutes later Kate entered with Tegan's test results. Tegan was asleep. "We tired her out today" smiled Kate. Tegan opened her eyes a few seconds later. "Hey..." she whispered sleepily. "Hey... do you want to sleep a bit more or do you want your test results" asked Kate. Tegan rubbed her eyes and sat up. "I want to go home... give it to me" she said. Kate took a seat next to Lindsey. "You've been a model patient these last few weeks Tegan. You've worked so hard and I'm really proud of you" smiled Kate and rubbed Tegan's hand. "Why do I sense a but coming?" said Tegan looking slightly dejected. "No buts..." said Kate. "You're doing well Tegan. Your lungs are recovering better than expected. You've been impressing the physio with your commitment to your lung exercises. She tells me that the rest of your muscles are also getting so much stronger. You've got a lot more stamina and strength. Keep up the good work!" said Kate. Tegan smiled and squeezed Lindsey's hand feeling quite proud of herself. She felt her cellphone vibrate next to her but she ignored it and gave Kate her full attention. "Your blood work came back okay... not fantastic yet but very much in acceptable range. I'm just going to adjust your meds slightly. Your X-rays and CT came back clean. EKG looks okay, again, a little bit or work left with your BP but you're just fine" said Kate. "Maybe Linds can give me some of her high BP to sort out my low BP" Tegan smiled. "Wish it worked that way. You're going to be out of breath and tired every now and again. But it's all normal Tee. I'm going to give you some intravenous fluids and a course of immune boosting meds twice a week. I don't want you to think you're getting worse – it's the opposite okay. We're working on building your immune system up right now. It was pretty much broken down to the ground completely. But we're rebuilding. And I'm hoping it's going to be stronger than ever after this" smiled Kate. "Thanks doc" said Tegan as relief washed over her. "I'm so proud of you baby" said Lindsey and kissed Tegan's cheek. The phone on the bed started vibrating again. Tegan turned it over and looked at the screen. Sara. She ignored it and let Kate remove the EKG leads on her chest. The phone buzzed again. "Jesus Sara... don't you understand I'm busy!" said Tegan. She pressed the green button. "Sara, I can't really talk right now" she said. "Wait wait... Sara calm down... Sar ... where are you? ...What are you doing there?... Just stay put for me Sar... I'm coming, stay right where you are... I'm coming to get you... Sara... Sara?" the phone went dead. Kate's face fell "What's wrong" she whispered. Tegan didn't answer and simply started buttoning up her shirt. "Tegan? What's wrong" said Lindsey and pulled Tegan's face up where she sat on a chair tying her converse laces. "Sara... I don't know something's not right... She needs me to go pick her up in Venice beach" said Tegan. "Phone Charles Linds" she said. "Tegan... you go home... I'll go get her" said Kate. "No way... I'm going" said Tegan and picked up her jacket.
Kate and Lindsey could not convince Tegan to go home. They phoned Charles to go directly to Venice beach and were all in Kate's Jeep. They managed to sneak out undetected by the paps and Tegan let out a sigh of relief. "Is she okay? What did she say Tegan? Did she sound hurt?" asked Kate looking anxious. "She said she's okay... but she sounded very upset... I think she's been drinking" said Tegan. "Come on, come on!" screamed Kate at the traffic and slammed her hand on the steering wheel. Tegan tried Sara's cellphone again but it went dead immediately. She tried Emy's phone "Em... yeah hi it's Tegan do you know where Sara is... you what?... no... uhm... no it's fine Em we're on our way to go pick her up... stay where you are... we've got her" said Tegan and hung up. She swallowed hard. "They broke up..." she said softly. Kate's eyes went wide. Tegan's phone rang again, it was an unknown number. "Hello... yes I'm Sara's sister... o... oh okay... we're on our way we'll be there in a few minutes... please just... sir please just take care of her till we get there" said Tegan sounding upset. "Okay I got the name of the bar she's in... dude said we needed to hurry because she's making all kind of shit with a pretty rough clientele" said Tegan.
"Dammit... no parking! Lindsey, get into the driver's seat please. You and Tegan stay in the car. I'll go get Sara" said Kate. Tegan didn't reply and waited for Kate to get out. When she was 20 feet away she jumped out. "Tegan... Tegan get back here!" screamed Lindsey but Tegan didn't look back. Kate started jogging towards the bar. The bar door opened and Sara together with a large biker were ejected forcefully. Sara stumbled over her feet. "Fuck you you homophobic asshole." slurred Sara. "You little dyke bitch" screamed the man. "Piece of shit" screamed Sara and walked closer to the mean looking man "You want a piece of me" said Sara inviting the man to fight. It looked ridiculous, the man was twice her size.
Kate grabbed Sara from behind and tried to pull her away. "Shitty excuse for a human you are" said Sara and spat at the man not even bothering to see who was pulling her away. The man flew forward and tried to punch Sara who was already being pulled away by Kate. His fist didn't connect quite as well as intended but Sara's head snapped to the side and blood spattered out of her mouth. His other fist connected with her stomach and she crouched over in pain.
