"Korra?" Pema called from the house. "Your mother is on the phone."
After thanking Pema, Korra closed the door. It's been a long while since she last talked with her mother on the phone ever since leaving the South Pole. Already, she had so much to tell her mother about what was going on in the city.
"Hey, sweetie…!" Senna's voice was on the phone. "How are you? Are you and Naga getting enough eat?"
Thanks to living on Air Temple Island and Pema's cooking, food wasn't too far.
Her father was doing alright, no thanks to sliding on the ice and just about twisting a muscle, but he'll pull through. The Water benders of the South Pole were tough. Nothing too much was going on back home.
"So, Tenzin told me you were seeing someone," Pema began.
Korra's eyes widened. Somehow, she knew her mother was going to talk to her about this. She and Tenzin have been avoiding each other since their last heated argument, which happened to be about dating.
"A certain Councilman Tarrlok?"
Korra breathed. It was inevitable that her mother was going to find out sooner or later. She and Tarrlok were big figure heads in the city and the world. She wondered how fast the gossip magazines got to the South Pole.
"Yes, mom. Tarrlok and I have been seeing each other for almost a month now."
"He's a little old for you, isn't he? I know he's Water Tribe and all, and I suppose that's a great thing. Though isn't a time like this in the world what with the Equalist going around the city a good time to be seeing someone? You've haven't much dating experience, sweetie."
Korra breathed. "I had this discussion with Tenzin before, and I'm not gonna argue about dating with you."
"Don't you think dating adds to all the stress that's going on in the city?"
She slammed her fist on the table. "He believes in me, mom…! Do you know what it's like ever since I came to Republic City? The people don't think I can do it. Lin took one look at me and already hates my guts. Even Tenzin gives me a hard time."
Mako, Bolin, and Asami don't even understand what it's like to be under the goldfish bowl of being the Avatar.
"He believes in me. He understands me more than anyone. Why can't you see that?"
She hung up the phone. Once she composed herself, she began to call Tarrlok.
"Hey, it's me. My mom. She knows about us."
"How did she take it?" he asked.
"She's not jumping for joy about it."
"She'll come to terms with it, eventually."
It didn't matter. All she needed was to hear his voice.
"I love you."
