Chapter 3
Staring at the full length mirror in my bedroom, I observed my reflection in the mirror. I had been struggling to find an outfit that I could deem suitable for a monarch, nevertheless the Queen of Hell. Everything I owned was either too school girl gothic, or sickly innocent. I wanted something that screamed 'Just try me.'
"I have to say, the burgundy jumper really screams ruler of Hell." My attention was quickly drawn away from my reflection, and to Ambrose, who was standing in my doorway with a smirk on his face. Normally I loved his playful yet sarcastic commentary, but today I was not in the mood for it.
"Unless you plan on being helpful, go away." I retorted, and Ambrose mocked being hit by my angry words. But I knew that he meant no harm, so I allowed him to sit on my clothes littered bed anyway. We both existed in the comforting silence of my room until Ambrose spoke.
"Cousin, are you really going to do this?" Ambrose questioned me, rising from my bed. I sighed, my arms dropping from my efforts of arranging the collar on my sweater. Turning, I answered him as honestly as I could.
"For the longest time, I was torn between doing what was expected of me, and what was right. I've always been the one who wanted to protect the ones I love, but also honor the traditions of the ways I was raised. By marrying Caliban, I can do both. Protect you and aunties, and the coven and my friends. But I can also honor the dark side of me. Ambrose, I have to do this." I was affirmative in my words, and Ambrose seemed to realize that just like last night, there was no changing my mind.
"Maybe I could come with you…so that you have some family there. Just having Lilith in your corner doesn't seem to be the most intelligent thing to do, especially when you're discussing the idea of your marriage." Ambrose offered, and I felt a bit of happiness and relaxation spread through me. He was right; having only Lilith, who was known for her less than supportive behavior, probably wasn't the wisest of choices. Having Ambrose there to argue points on my behalf would be a good idea.
"Alright, you can come. But only if you help me pick out an outfit."
I stood at the doors of the throne room, clutching the scroll with my demands tightly in my sweaty hands. Ambrose stood next to me, looking a bit panicked himself. Normally, I was quite confident when it came to facing the citizens of hell. But now, it felt like a thousand butterflies were fluttering throughout my chest.
"Are you ready?" Ambrose questioned me. His hand was placed on the skull shaped door knob, ready to open it on my word. Taking a deep breath, I nodded, and watched as my cousin pushed open the iron door. A burst of warm air hit my skin, and I motioned for Ambrose to follow me.
Walking into the throne room, I automatically laid eyes on a group gathered near the throne. As we approached, I began to hear the voice of Lilith above everyone else. Though, when everyone noticed both I and Ambrose, the group separated to reveal not only Lilith, but the Plague Kings and Caliban himself. Lilith held a glare of disapprovement in her eyes, but I felt like I also noticed a glimmer of hatred. Oh what a joy this meeting was going to be.
"Your highness, Sabrina. Please tell these insolent kings and their earthmade excuse of a prince that you have not agreed to an alliance." Lilith was the first to speak, rushing down from the throne's pedestal to meet me. I could see Caliban, once again shirtless with nothing on but a leather vest, giving me a guilty smile behind my advisor's back. It was now or never, and time to tell the truth.
"It's true." I stated it simply, knowing that even if I tried to give an explanation, Lilith was going to go off the rails anyway.
"You cannot be serious about this? Without consulting me, you gave away the throne?" Lilith's fury was seething out of her. I could see all the anger flooding her expression, and was not ready to see the manifestation explode. Thankfully, an unexpected chevalier came to my defense.
"We came to this conclusion together, and we've each brought conditions for the alignment. That's what we have come here to discuss. All of us will benefit from this, I do promise you." Caliban spoke out, changing the attention to himself. Lilith turned to look at him, trying to sense any sort of deception. Though, Caliban seemed as sincere as I had ever seen him.
"Yes, we each have written down our terms, and today we will decide on a contract on alignment." I agreed, trying to calm the energy of the room. I did not need Lilith erupting into a fit of flourished anger.
"Let us see these terms, then!" Lilith huffed, and the Plague Kings all grunted in agreement. Lilith motioned for one of the servants to bring forth a table, paper, and a quill and ink. Enough chairs for all to be seated around said table were also brought.
Once everyone was seated, with Caliban and I each at the ends of the table, it was time to begin what I had come here for. Contracting the alignment, and making the decisions that would alter my future forever. Not daunting at all.
"Her majesty, Sabrina, and I, have gathered you all here today to discuss a proposition that we have created. This alignment would not only benefit each of us as individuals, but also the realms that each of us represent. We ask you to be our witnesses as we inscribe a contract deciding the terms of our union." Caliban was the first to speak, outlining the cause of our gathering. I watched Lilith as her lip quivered in distaste when Caliban spoke of our union.
When he was finished, he looked to me to speak. I cleared my throat, and tried to sound somewhat mature and educated as I tried to describe the agreement that Caliban and I have come to.
"We have decided to end our battle against one another for the throne. Caliban and I will complete the Unholy Regalia together, and we will both make a claim to the throne. We will rule as King and Queen of Hell, and respectively split the duties required of us evenly." I explained the first step in the change of plan that Caliban and I had created. Though, it wasn't well recepted.
"That is not how the Unholy Regalia is completed! There can only be one victor." Beelzebub, one of the Plague Kings, exclaimed. The other Plague Kings jeered in agreement, and Lilith rolled her eyes.
"There is no rule that forbids us from completing the Unholy Regalia as a team, my kings. But we will, and use the claim of the throne together. Sabrina and I, when we are wed, will be a powerful force that no one will dare challenge." Caliban reassured his advisors, who seemed to settle down at his explanation.
"So you two will work together and find the last artifact. Then you will have a grand royal wedding. But what will happen after the honeymoon? Who will have what duties? This is a rash decision and I cannot say that I condone it, and I highly doubt that your father, Lucifer, would either." Lilith finally spoke her piece, and I had to keep myself from rolling my eyes at the mention of my father. Of course she would bring him into it. She was infatuated with him.
"What my father would think of my decision is no longer relevant. But to answer your other questions, we will decide the division of duties once Caliban and myself have completed our alliance. And also, there will be no honeymoon. This is purely a political marriage." I replied, and watched as Lilith's face turned away., obviously frustrated with my rash decisions and attitude towards. Though, when I mentioned the honeymoon part, I also noticed Caliban's lips turn up into a sly grin. He was such a guy.
"Now that we have explained to all of our advisors the extent of our plans, I believe that now is the time that her highness and I draft our contract, with our conditions of marriage. Here are mine." Caliban laid down a scroll identical to mine onto the table, where Asmodeus took it and placed it next to where he was drafting the contract.
"Here are mine." I also placed the scroll that Caliban had sent to me last night on the varnished surface of the table. Asmodeus once again pulled it to his side, placing it on the opposing side of Caliban's.
"Shall we declare our conditions of the contract? It seems like the formal thing to do." Caliban suggested, and I nodded, encouraging him to go first with the wave of my hand.
"One. The Infernal Crown shall be shared equally between I and my wife. This will be an equal partnership, with no struggle of power between us." Caliban requested his first condition, which was a very kind and unexpected statement from him. He looked at me for confirmation, and I nodded, signaling Asmodeus to write it done. Then it was my turn.
"My first condition is that Earth will remain unharmed and uninhabited by demons, and that there will only be nine circles of Hell." I wanted to get the most important of my demands out first. I heard a few muffles of disapproval from the Plague Kings, but Caliban hushed them when he gave his approval of the condition.
"Two. When we are married, my wife will spend her nights here in Hell with me, and exceptions will only be made with extenuating circumstances." Caliban gave me a grin, and I had to keep my tongue in my cheek to keep from speaking fouly. It was to be expected that Caliban would want my primary residence to be here in Hell with him. So I nodded, moving on to my own second demand.
"Two. The citizens of Hell will help rid my home of Greendale, my family, my coven, and my friends of the Pagans that are terrorizing us." I made sure to include the safety of those who mattered most to me. Caliban gave his support, and on to the contract it went.
"Three. Our marriage will not be strictly political. It will be a carnal relationship, as expected of the King and Queen of Hell. Sabrina will be willing to give our bond a chance." Caliban decided to throw a curveball, completely knocking me off guard. My reaction was almost instantaneous.
"No way. No!" I snapped, and the Plague Kings looked at me with annoyance. Lilith held a look of amusement at my sudden outburst. Ambrose placed a hand over his mouth, as if he was trying to physically keep it shut.
"These are my conditions of our alignment, your majesty. If you refuse them….well, I guess you can say goodbye to your precious Earth." Caliban was not playing games. A wicked smile covered his sculpted face, and he knew he had me backed into a corner.
It was going to take all my willpower, but I had to to agree to the term. There was no other way to save my realm, my family, or my friends. It was as simple as that. So I gave in. Taking a deep breath, I composed myself.
"Fine. But my third and final condition is that I can still attend school in my realm, I can still have relationships with my friends, and we will wait until I am ready before we begin any type of carnal relationship." I countered Caliban with my final condition, and he nodded. Though, Lilith decided to ruin my solution with a daunting reminder.
"If this royal marriage does occur, my dear Sabrina, it will have to be consummated. It is tradition, and it is the Infernal Law." Lilith spoke, a nasty smile coating her red lacquered lips. My stomach dropped. But Caliban came to my rescue.
"I'm sure we can find a way to satisfy the court. For now, shall we sign the contract?" Caliban drew the attention away from Lilith's input, and motioned at Asmodeus' completed scroll. I nodded, getting up from my seat and approaching the Plague King.
He handed me the quill, and motioned to the line where I was to sign away my future. Placing the nib of the quill to the textured paper, I signed.
Sabrina Diana Morningstar
I handed the quill to Caliban next, who did a quick scratch of ink as his signature. He handed it back to Asmodeus, who called forth everyone around the table as witnesses. All of the Plague Kings signed their names beneath Caliban's signature. I was thankful that Ambrose was there for me, since he was able to sign the contract under my name. Lilith begrudgingly followed suit. It was after she had finished her flourish of a signature that Asmodeus held a puzzled look on his face, before he spoke out.
"It seems Her Highness only has two witnesses. She will need a third signature to complete the agreement." The Plague King spoke, and I began to panic. No one else was with me. But that was when an unexpected, and a very unwelcome voice echoed throughout the throne room.
"I believe I can provide that. She is after all, my daughter."
