Chapter 4

"I believe that I can provide that. She is, after all, my daughter."

I looked up to face the direction from which my father's voice was coming. When I found him, I didn't know what I wanted to do first...roll my eyes or gag at the sight of him.

Lucifer was dressed in a golden coat, perched ever so gracefully at the summit of the stairs behind the Infernal Throne. He was grinning like a cheshire cat, and all I wanted to do was slap the triumphant look off his chiseled face. Talk about daddy issues; he was my biggest one at the moment.

"Lucifer Morningstar, father of Sabrina Diana Morningstar. You can place me as a witness, Asmodeus." Lucifer descended down the stairs, instructing the Plague King to inscribe his name unto the alignment scroll.

Lilith watched me like a hawk as my father approached us. I knew she was searching for my reaction, trying to gauge the level of my anger. But I knew that I had to keep my cool if I wanted to get my way. Lucifer had a way of getting under my skin, but I could not let him have this victory. So I decided to play the nice and dutiful daughter, for the instance.

"Father...I did not expect to see you here." I commented once Lucifer had reached us. Caliban and the Plague King's were watching the interaction between my father and I with steady gazes.

"I couldn't let my daughter give herself away in marriage, could I? That just breaks all kinds of traditions." Lucifer quipped, showing a row of his pearly white teeth. "Now who is the young man for whom my daughter intends to enter a vow of unholy matrimony with?"

"That would be I, my lord. I am Caliban, Prince of Hell." Caliban gave a formal introduction of himself, and Lucifer's gaze traveled down him, inspecting every inch of his appearance.

"A Prince of Hell? I do not remember siring a son, so please, my dear boy, tell me how you could ever think that you are a Prince of Hell?" Lucifer questioned Caliban. The Plague Kings were the first to come to Caliban's defense, before he could even speak for himself.

"Caliban was formed from the pit of Hell itself, my lord. His is as pure of an heir to the throne as Her Majesty, Sabrina." Purson, one of the Kings, tried to explain Caliban's legitimacy to claim the throne, but my father was far less than willing to hear it.

"The only man who shall call himself King is I. And my daughter shall reign beside me. She is free to marry you, if that is what she wishes, but you will have no claim to my throne." Lucifer's voice was strong as he held the gaze of both Caliban and the Plague Kings. You could feel the power radiating off of him.

Caliban looked to me, trying to get me to speak up. We had already come to terms, we just needed to finish this agreement. Everything that meant anything to me was on the line. And so I spoke, and made sure that my father knew his place, once and for all.

"Father, Caliban and I have already decided to rule Hell together, as one. We have signed this agreement. This marriage is going to happen, we are going to split the power, and you are not going to get in our way. And seeing how I have already dethroned you once before, you don't want to mess with me, now do you?" It took all my courage and might to force the words from my lips.

Lucifer's face turned from one of triumph to one of fury. I knew that I had struck a chord, and that he was aware that I was not backing down. But Asmodeus spoke, changing the attention to himself.

"It is true, my lord. Once her majesty and Prince Caliban signed the agreement, a vow was made. A political tie has been made, and Sabrina, as your heir, will take the throne with Prince Caliban as her king. Your claim to the throne has become invalid." With those words, I almost let out a sigh of relief. There was nothing that Lucifer could do to derail our plans.

"Just think, now you can spend all your time with Lilith." I chirped, and Lilith gave me a dirty glare. Ambrose had to stifle a chuckle, and Lucifer looked like he wanted to smack me clear across the room.

"Just sign the paper, my lord. It is not worth the fight." Lilith advised my father to just give in. He looked at her, probably astonished by her lack of power hungry greed. We were all staring Lucifer down, waiting for him to accept the quill that Asmodeus had extended to him.

Finally accepting his defeat, my father exhaled a more than dramatic huff, and placed the nib of the pen to the parchment. With a few flicks of his wrist, he signed his name under mine. Caliban locked eyes with my eyes, a look of victory clouding his own. His face held a large smile.

"I decree, here on this day, that Caliban, Prince of Hell, and Her Royal Highness, Sabrina Diana Morningstar, are to be wed in unholy matrimony as soon as the Unholy Regalia is completed. They shall be crowned as soon as the union occurs." Asmodeus placed a palm of fire to the alignment, scorching a seal into the paper, notarizing the agreement.

It was done.

The next day after school, I had gathered my friends for a meeting to discuss the decisions that I had made the past few days. I didn't want to wait, and risk them hearing about it somehow. This was my news, and I needed to explain it to them in person.

We were all sitting in the Kinkle's garage, splayed out across the worn in couch and ratty armchair. Ros and Harvey were snuggled up like every cliche couple from a teen romance, and Theo and Robin were casually slouched against one another on the opposite end of the couch. I sat alone in the armchair, observing them all. I knew right then that I was going to miss seeing them all the time, dearly.

"So, Brina, what did you want to talk to us about?" Ros questioned me. I feared the backlash that I would receive for what I was about to tell my friends. They were all looking at me like I wasn't about to tell them I had just signed my life away.

Taking a deep breath, I got up from the armchair I had been sitting in. I smoothed my hand down over the pleats of my black skirt, to wipe the sweat from my palms or to smooth out it's wrinkles, I did not know. Once I was standing before everyone, I spoke.

"As you all know, Caliban and I have been competing against one another in the Unholy Regalia. We've both made a claim to the throne, and there is only one artifact that remains." I knew that I was reciting old information, but I felt like I had to lay the groundwork to get my entire point across.

"Yeah, and you're gonna kick his ass." Harvey jeered, giving Ros a high five while they all laughed. I knew he had a strong distaste for Caliban ever since the Pygmalion spell. Harvey was not going to be happy; even more likely, he was going to be angry.

"Well, that's the thing….there's been a change in plans." I explained, and suddenly the laughter that enveloped my friends ceased. Looks of joyfulness turned to concern, and Theo was the first to ask the question that I had dreaded answering all along.

"Sabrina, what's going on? What do you mean something's changed?" He asked, his voice laced with confusion.

Everyone else looked at me questiongly, and I decided to bite the bullet, once and for all. So I blurted out the answer without a second thought. Maybe not one of my brightest moments.

"Caliban and I are getting married."

Silence filled the room. Scanning my friend's faces, they ranged from shock, to sadness, to pure anger. None of them spoke; I didn't blame them. I wouldn't have anything to say either, if I was in their position. But quiet only lasts for so long, and Harvey was the first to break it.

"You're kidding, right? Brina, you can't be serious….tell us you're kidding." Harvey's tone was clipped, obviously not amused. I hated to break his heart by telling him that it wasn't a joke. It was real.

"I'm not kidding. Caliban came up with a plan that benefits both this realm, and Hell. It is what is best for everyone. All that I have to do is marry him." I tried explaining it with a bit of optimism in my voice, but that didn't seem to work...at all.

"So you're just gonna marry him, just like that? Where are you going to live? Surely your aunts aren't letting you do this." Ros asked me, and I shook my head.

"I have to do what is right for everyone, and if that means marrying Caliban, then so be it. I don't know the specifics of it yet, and yes, my aunties are less than thrilled, but I have to do this."

"What about the Pagans? You can't just run off and get married while there are people out there trying to sacrifice the virgins of Greendale." Theo inquired, his hands crossed across his chest. Robin was looking expectantly at me as well, considering this mess heavily involved him as well now.

"As part of my alignment with Caliban, we each gave terms for which each other have to follow. I made sure that one of my terms was that the citizens of Hell help us rid Greendale of the Pagans. They agreed." I tried to comfort Theo's fears. My answer seemed to satisfy everyone on the Pagan issue. Though, questions were still being thrown at me.

"What else did you put in your terms?" Ros quietly asked, and I sighed.

"I asked that the Earth be kept as it was, voiding Caliban and the Plague King's attempts to turn it into the tenth circle of Hell. I asked for the Pagans to be eradicated, and that my life as I know it remain as normal as possible. I'm not going to abandon you guys. I would never do that." Confessing my plans to keep life as normal as possible seemed to settle Ros and Theo, but Harvey still looked quite peeved.

"What were Caliban's terms?" Harvey asked me, throwing me off guard. And dear Satan, I did not want to answer this question. So I did what I do best in these situations, and avoided it to the best of my ability.

"Things. But they don't matter." I simply shrugged it off.

The room seemed less tension filled. Like the dust had settled. Though, Harvey spoke one last time, before storming off. He muttered something about dinner. Ros quickly ran after him, and Theo and Robin took that as their cue to leave.

And his words were something that hit me straight on. And I hoped he was wrong. As I sat there, alone in the Kinkle's dusty shed, his words raced through my mind. Five simple words. One daunting phrase."

"You're going to regret this."
