Chapter 116
Tegan woke up again a few hours later. Lindsey's bed was pushed up against hers and she was clinging to her hand. She felt much better than earlier that morning and stared at her wife's sleeping face and smiled. She rubbed her eyes knowing that she needed to get out of bed soon to go to the toilet. She suddenly wished she still had that horrible catheter in so she didn't have to let go of Lindsey's hand. She contemplated going it alone but pressed the call button after thinking of her conversation with Lindsey earlier that day. The conversation where they decided to take care of each other and themselves and to accept as much help as possible.
Tegan returned to bed and it woke Lindsey up. "Hi sweetie" she whispered. "Hey my lovely" said Tegan as Abby adjusted her meds, reattached her monitors and tucked her back in bed. "How are you feeling" both of them said at the same time. "Better" both of them replied and laughed. Tegan was suddenly in pain again and put her hand over her bandaged ribs. "Easy does it Tegan" said Abby. "You two are so cute!" she said before picking up the phone. "Doc... yeah it's Abby, they're awake"
"The sleeping beauties are awake! You two had a lazy morning" winked Kate as she entered. "Yeah and I'm still kinda sleepy" said Tegan. "The anaesthesia takes about 24 hours to get out of your system completely so you're going to be groggy for a while" said Kate. "Temps slightly elevated" said Abby checking Tegan's temp in her ear. "Check every 10 minutes for the next hour please. Let's get the core temp monitor on her again if it keeps going up" said Kate. "How are the babies doing Kate" asked Tegan. Kate glanced over at the foetal monitor. "Looks as if they're just fine Tegan. Adison will come check soon" said Kate. Tegan yawned a massive yawn flinched. "Ouch" she exclaimed. "Baby... I think they have the hiccups... or at least one of them does" smiled Lindsey. "Kate this isn't something else is it?" said Tegan sounding worried. "Nah... those are hiccups for sure" smiled Kate. Tegan moved closer to Lindsey and put her hand on her belly, it jumped up every few seconds. "Oh my gosh how cute is that... Hey guys... you okay in there? It's too early to be drinking" joked Tegan. "Does this hurt them Kate?" asked Tegan. "No Tee... I'm sure it annoys them but it doesn't hurt them" said Kate. "Oh my god look at your arms boo" said Lindsey. "Wha... oh yeah... it's nothing sweetie" said Tegan still intrigued with the babies. "Look at you... you're so bruised" said Lindsey. Tegan shrugged. "Yeah yeah... I know I look like a drug addict but please... let's not let this spoil the moment. At least my tats are disguising it a bit" said Tegan annoyed.
Sara, Erin and Alex entered the room. They all looked much fresher after a shower and a change of clothes back home. "Hey guys! You two look as if you're feeling a bit better?" said Sara. "We sure are" said Lindsey. "Sar, Sar come feel this. They have the hiccups. One of them I think" said Tegan and put Sara's hand on Lindsey's belly. "Oh my god... that's amazing. I think one just kicked the other or something... probably annoyed. That's my niece and my nephew in there" said Sara and swallowed hard to keep her emotions inside. "Hey you two. It's aunt Sara, you can just call me Sara. I can't wait to meet you. I'm going to spoil you rotten, I don't even care what your moms say" smiled Sara. "Erin, Alex feel this" said Tegan. "Hey we haven't even had time to show you the 3D video" said Lindsey. Tegan proudly showed off her kids to her sister and friends on her iPad. "Isn't that amazing!" she smiled, completely forgetting about her pain.
"We made a pit stop on the way here. Got you your favourite Tegan, some bubble tea. Three different kinds. And we got you some frozen yogurt Lindsey" said Erin. "Thank you! I love bubble tea so much" said Tegan grabbing one. "No no, lunch first please. You must be starving it's way past lunch time" said Kate. "Nah.. you're feeding me enough through these" said Tegan pointing at her IVs. "But sure, I can eat" she smiled. "Okay guys you can stay while they have lunch but after that I'm enforcing strict visiting hours. These two, or rather four... need to get some rest" said Kate.
Kate and Sara were sitting in the cafeteria finally having lunch. The cafeteria was reasonably empty and they were in a jovial mood, both finally letting go of some of the built up stress and anxiety of the last two days. Kate had her hand on Sara's telling her an amusing story about an incident that happened in the ER a few months ago. Sara was laughing when she felt a tap on her shoulder. "Hi Sara" said a voice and Sara turned around. "Carmen... hi. Um... how are you feeling" she said. "Good. Going home today. Just waiting for a friend to come pick me up. How's Tegan?" she said. "That's great. Tegan's fine... she's doing so much better thanks. Oh... Carmen this is Kate" said Sara. Carmen gave Kate a death stare. Kate smiled and said hello. "Hi... so... it's true... you're dating Tegan's doctor?" said Carmen. Sara blushed and glanced at Kate who smiled calmly. "Um... yeah I am... well I knew Kate long before she was Tegan's doctor" said Sara. The girl seemed to be getting a bit emotional. "Well I can see how you would feel attracted for a short while to the person who helped save Tegan's life. I'm sure it will pass" said Carmen. "Carmen... no... that was really uncalled for" said Sara softly. "Hmmfff... It's just... I mean do you really have a connection... or is it just fucking femotion that..." said Carmen before being cut off by Sara. "Carmen that's enough! Please... this is my personal life and I really don't feel like discussing my girlfriend with you... in front of her mind you" said Sara. "I'm sorry I don't know what came over me. I hope she makes you happy Sara" said Carmen looking confused. "By the way... did you see we're famous" said Carmen pulling out her phone and showing Sara a photo on a gossip site of them hugging the previous day in the atrium. Sara went white. Carmen pushed the phone in Kate's face and smiled. "That was such a lovely moment" she said with a gleeful smile. "Uh huh... you're going to have to excuse us Carmen we were just in the middle of a private conversation" said Sara. "Yeah... guess I'll see you in court Sara. Call me if you need anybody to talk to... I mean I had you to talk to when I needed somebody" said Carmen. "Uh... thanks but I have somebody Carmen... I have Kate to talk to" said Sara just about squeezing all the blood out of Kate's hand. "Yeah... right" said Carmen with a weird look on her face. "See you Sara... You better take good care of her Dr McDreamy... don't you hurt her hotshot" said Carmen sarcastically before walking away. "Take care Carmen" said Sara with a shaky voice.
"What the fuck was that?" said Kate sounding confused. "I have no fucking clue" said Sara. "And that photo?" said Kate. "I... I was taking a walk while Tegan was in surgery and I happen to run into her in the atrium... I was upset and she... well she was nice and she hugged me... in like a nice supportive, friendly way. I swear it was nothing. I don't know what the fuck is going on in her head right now... Jesus Kate she scared me!" said Sara sounding upset. "It's okay Sara... I'm having a talk with her doctors" said Kate getting up. "Don't leave me here alone" said Sara quickly. "Of course I won't leave you sweetie" smiled Kate and took her hand.
"Well aren't we a pair of wrecks" said Tegan to Lindsey while sipping her bubble tea. "Yeah... well at least we get to be together when it's not visiting hours" shrugged Lindsey. "Are you feeling okay Linds?" asked Tegan seriously. "I'm still really tired but I feel so much better babe. I'm okay... I promise" said Lindsey. "Good... I really want to lean over and kiss you right now but my chest is killin me" said Tegan. "Oh shit hun, should we call Kate?" asked Lindsey in a panic. "Nooo... sweetie, I did ask her about it and she said it's just normal post operative pain. They did poke holes and me and scratch around in there and cut shit out so it's bound to hurt a bit. She said Abby will come give me some more pain meds at 3... They don't want me turning into a junkie you know" said Tegan laughing. "I'm fine sweetie" said Tegan pulling up Lindsey's hand to kiss it. "You're feeling kind of warm Tee" said Lindsey concerned. "This cold tea is cooling me down don't worry... Linds, this is the best hospital in the country. She's checking my temp every damn ten minutes. They'll know if I'm running a fever and they'll fix it. I'm fine" said Tegan shaking her head.
Kate and Sara sat in her office talking about the Carmen incident. "Sara... they couldn't share much because of doctor patient confidentiality but they assured me she's harmless" said Kate. "Okay... I'm just going to forget about the whole thing. It's not worth getting upset about" said Sara. They talked about random nonsense for the next half hour. "Kate..." said Sara. "Yes Sara" said Kate with her arm on the back of the couch and her hand touching Sara's shoulder. "Kate... um... I want to get something out of the way. Because here's the thing... I've wanted to do this so many times... fuck... sooooo many times but every time I think that I need to wait for a special moment... and then I don't do it and every time it makes me feel sad and I... I... every moment is special, every one and... and I... " Sara was blabbering like she always did when she was nervous. Kate smiled a mischievous smile at her. "I love you too Sara" she said. Sara just about jumped on her pinning her down and kissing her like there was no tomorrow. She finally surfaced for air. "Fuck you" she said playfully and softly hit her chest with a closed fist. "I wanted to say it first" she laughed and kissed her again. "I love you Kate... I adore you. I love you, I love you, I love you" said Sara. "You make me so incredibly happy Sara... I've never felt this way about anybody. I'm head over heals in love with you. I'm not just in love with you... I actually LOVE you" said Kate and smiled looking more gorgeous than ever.
