CHAPTER 1

She got it.

Peggy's breathing was laboured, and at least 3 of her ribs were broken, along with a few bones in her arm, but she could barely feel that over the excruciating pain at the sides of her abdomen, caused by the pieces of rebar sticking out of her. She had fallen down the stairwell whilst fleeing the Zero Matter wielded by Whitney Frost, and due to her everlasting bad luck had gotten impaled by rebar in three separate places. Peggy didn't think that they had damaged anything vital, but she knew that if she didn't get help immediately, she would bleed out. So she screamed. She screamed for Daniel, for Rose, and for Mr. Jarvis. Then she waited, surrounded by suffocating silence. The sounds of the heartbeat and her breath weighed heavy on her ears. Then she heard them. Footsteps getting louder by the moment. The familiar clink of Chief Sousa's crutch. As they rounded the corner, her vision became blurry, and she blacked out.

When she woke up, she was in her bed at Stark Mansion, attached to an IV. Bandages wrapped around her middle, and last night's blood stained clothes lay discarded in the corner. Sunlight streamed in through the open window and in the distance she could see Mr. Jarvis involved in a futile attempt to capture Bernard the flamingo. In an armchair next to her nightstand was Daniel Sousa, who had evidently not noticed that she was awake. She tried to sit up, and a bolt of pain shot up her ribs, and it was all she could to keep herself from passing out. Daniel looked up when she moved, and in an instant he was on his feet, and she was leaning on him. "WHOA!", he exclaimed, "Careful there. Don't move." He helped her sit up, propped against pillows. "Wh-What happened?" she asked her voice trembling. Daniel took a deep breath and said, "What do you remember?" After a moment's hesitation, Peggy said, "I remember Roxxon and Whitney Frost and Zero Matter and falling." At that her voice cracked. She closed her eyes and laid her head back against her pillows, shuddering. Daniel sighed, sat down and said, "You were impaled. We brought you here and Mrs. Jarvis patched you up. Apparently, she was a nurse before the war. She says that you need to rest until you heal fully." "What about the uranium" asked Peggy, dreading the answer. "She got it." Silence. "Then we get it back." At this, Daniel leaned forward looking incredulous. "We can't do anything until you're back to full strength. So, right now your goal is to rest and relax and heal. No arguments."

TWO DAYS LATER

"Ms. Carter, Mr. Thompson is here to see you."
