He heard the subtle hum of his ship, heard the mechanisms working overtime to get the craft through the voyage home, he could hear it all…
…but he didn't care.
Miles Prower was a genius, his I.Q. rivaling that of the the mad doctor constantly trying to subjugate his world, he could have this ship running at 100% in less than an hour if he so chose…
…but he didn't want to.
The better the ship ran, the faster it and it's passengers (him included) would be home. And that's exactly why he didn't fix it. He was intentionally allowing his ship the remain crippled, because it helped him put off facing the inevitable truth.
That he'd have to return home without HER.
And so he remained isolated. Remained in his room. Having intentionally tampered with the intercom and surveillance feeds so that the other passengers could neither see, nor speak to him. Of course they still had the direct approach: knocking on his door, but that's what the automated locks are for: to prevent unwanted intrusions.
And right now, he didn't want to see or hear anyone.
Only HER.
For a brief moment he could swear he felt a sudden shift from the seed in his hand. The Seed. The one he held against his chest, as he had from the moment Sonic gave it to him. It didn't seem real then, just as it doesn't now. Contrary to what his friends may think he was not in denial, no he was well aware of the tragedy that had taken place not two days ago. But it didn't feel real. It was but it didn't feel like it, it seemed like only moments ago he had seen HER. Felt her presence next to him, heard her sweet, soft angelic voice in his ears, smelled her subtly sweet aroma.
But it was as simple as that.
One moment she was there next to him, the next he was pressing the button and firing the cannon that took her life. He wondered if she had heard his last words to her. His heart hurt. Only at the end were their true feelings for on another laid bare. But then, there was still that question: had she heard him? For all he knew, she had been willing to confess to him because the deed had already been done, so it was her only remaining chance to say it before she…
He thought himself a coward. He had only had the courage to finally tell her at the very end, all that wasted time. Perhaps if he had told her sooner then she wouldn't had done what she did. He didn't begrudge her actions, he knew her sacrifice was a noble and pure one.
But he did begrudge himself.
As he laid there on his bed clutching the only remnant of her he head left, the memories of their time together had come rushing back.
When they fell into the cave, when they fell into the lake on Planet Marmolin, when she helped him regain his confidence after the metarex fleet cornered them, when they were hiding from Shadow, when he convinced her not to leave after discovering the chip in her brain.
All those perfect opportunities…wasted.
He had experienced similar flashbacks to this mere moments before pressing the button, and he had experienced them constantly since. He remembered how amazed and awestruck she had been when he had shown her and everyone else his spacecraft, remembered how she had said he was a genius when he had used the fireflies to light their way through the cave.
Genius…right.
He had built planes of all kinds, even ones capable of transforming into fully mobile and functional mecha, built wrist communicators, save a city from a nuke while beating back Eggman in his massive walker, built a spaceship with his own two hands and even managed to create replicas of the legendary chaos emeralds capable of allowing Sonic to use chaos control just like the real thing.
But he couldn't save the girl he loved.
He may be only eight years old, some might say too young to have actually felt true love, but he knew from the very depths of his soul that what he felt for HER was true love. And he had still been made to suffer. He knew he couldn't love anyone else like he lover HER, the fact that he was only eight made it all the more painful. Was he just to keep going then? To live this empty life without HER? He may have only known her for a short time but that was all it took, suddenly he couldn't live without her presence. Without HER, the world holds no meaning or joy.
It would be at least two more days before they would arrive home, to Mobius, their home.
As it should have been hers.
"wasn't it a promise? You said when this was over you would come live with us on our planet!"
She HAD promised, and yet she wasn't here, wasn't by his side, wasn't coming home with them.
"Cosmo…"
