Chapter 160
Sara woke up as the first rays of sun fell on her face through a crack in the curtains. She turned her head to face her sleeping lover. Kate was always at her most gorgeous early in the morning, still sleeping. She looked relaxed lying on her back with her soft pink lips slightly parted, breathing slowly. Her skin was slightly pale but so perfect. Sara stared at her for a few minutes before getting up slowly and carefully to go find some coffee. She pulled on some pyjamas and explored the cabin. There were three beautiful bedrooms and a large loft area that could easily be used as another bedroom. "Perfect for kids" thought Sara and smiled as she switched the coffee machine on. The smell of fresh coffee soon filled the air and Sara poured herself a cup and went outside to breathe in the early morning air with a blanket around her shoulders. She was almost mesmerised by the light on the water, lost in thought. She thought about being a parent, what that all meant.
"Penny for your thoughts" said Kate softly. Sara turned around and saw her leaning against the doorframe, loose pants hanging low on her hipbones, holding a cup of coffee. "Morning beautiful. I was going to bring you coffee in bed but you looked so peaceful" said Sara and gave Kate a kiss on the cheek. "I can't sleep without you next to me these days" smiled Kate. They sat down next to each other on the porch swing and watched the early morning sun dance on the water. "It's so quiet, so serene" said Sara softly. "Yeah... it's amazing" said Kate and smiled. "Let's stay another day" said Sara. "I'd loooove to but, we have an appointment with Addison this afternoon in case you forgot" said Kate. "I know, but can't we reschedule it?" asked Sara. "I guess, but aren't you keen to find out" said Kate. "I brought a home pregnancy test with" said Sara. "Oh... well... um... do you want to take it?" asked Kate. "I don't know, do you want me to?" asked Sara. "It would be a lot more special to find out here than in a consulting room" said Kate. "Okay well... let's do it... and we can go see Addison later this week" said Sara. "I'll have to phone her and hear what she has to say about it" said Kate looking nervous. "Baby, all she's going to tell us today is yay or nay, no?" said Sara. "Yes... we'll probably only be able to see the heartbeat in a week so anyway" said Kate. "Let's do it" smiled Sara excitedly. Kate suddenly looked as if she was about to throw up. "Yeah let's do it" she said.
Tegan woke up with the sound of babies crying, it wasn't loud but they were letting their moms know they were awake. The babies had another feeding session in the middle of the night that was quite uneventful but both Tegan and Lindsey was exhausted from the interrupted sleep. Tegan sat up and rubbed her eyes. "Hey peanuts... good morning munchkins" she said and picked up Ryan and put him in bed next to his mother. "Okay Casey, I'm coming" she mumbled and picked up Casey. "Hhhhmmm five more minutes" mumbled Lindsey. "I've got the diapers, so you can have that five minutes" said Tegan as she fumbled around the side table for the changing mat, diapers, wipes and bum cream. "Do you two feel better than last night?" said Tegan while changing nappies. "You sure are in a good mood this morning" she said watching Ryan put his hand in his mouth. "Hungry big boy?" she giggled and kissed his feet. "Yeah I'm hungry too. I'm going to make your mom a nice big breakfast while she gives you yours" said Tegan.
"One problem... I really don't have a wee" laughed Sara. "No rush, let's have breakfast first, get some more liquids into you and then we'll do it" smiled Kate and kissed Sara's hand. Sara put her hand on Kate's soft cheek. "You're so fucking gorgeous... so incredibly beautiful... you make my heart skip a beat... I'm so into you" said Sara seriously. "And I'm head over heals in love with the most amazing, beautiful woman in the world" said Kate and leaned over to kiss Sara. She put her leg over Sara's and a lengthy make out session ensued. When they finally came up for air Sara giggled looking into Kate's eyes. "I love a good make out session in the morning" she smiled.
"They do sleep a lot don't they" said Tegan while dishing up Lindsey's scrambled eggs. "Mmm... eat, sleep, poop, cry" laughed Lindsey. "Fuck I'm tired" laughed Tegan. "Yeah they sleep when we want them awake and they cry when we want them asleep... go figure... I guess we're going to have to get used to these middle of the night feeds right. The hospital has been spoiling us rotten with those feeding tubes" said Lindsey. "Well the book says that the time between night feedings should start getting longer and longer and pretty soon they'll be sleeping through the night... or at least for a six or seven hour stretch" said Tegan. "Yes, but the paediatrician also said that with them being smaller than normal it could take a bit longer than normal sized babies, but I love the optimism" said Lindsey. "Hmmm... the book also says that we should keep it as dark and quiet as possible doing the night time feedings and diaper changes so they know it's sleepy time and not play time" said Tegan. "You and that book" laughed Lindsey. "Wish that book warned us about the burping" said Tegan shaking her head. "It probably did and we just forgot it... we both have baby brain" said Lindsey.
Sara and Kate enjoyed a big breakfast before taking a walk around the lake. "I have to wee... you ready?" asked Sara. "I'm ready" smiled Kate. Sara took the pregnancy test out of her vanity case and took a deep breath. Kate walked into the bathroom with her. Sara sat down on the toilet and looked at the instructions. "Just wee on it... it's pretty simple" said Kate. Sara sat on the loo for a minute but nothing happened. Kate was staring at her intently. "Performance anxiety babe... give me a minute" said Sara. "Oh... sorry" smiled Kate and left the bathroom
One of the angel monitors on Tegan's kitchen counter suddenly started beeping wildly. "Shit" screamed Tegan and ran to the room panicked. She reached the crib and checked both babies. "Tee? Are they okay" said Lindsey behind her. "I don't know... um... yeah they... they're both breathing fine I think" said Tegan. The monitor kept beeping. "Damn this thing... something's not right" said Tegan and slapped the monitor. It stopped beeping. Lindsey had her hands on both babies chests, both were moving in and out at a normal rate. Tegan put her hands over her face and let out a deep shuddering breath. "That just scared the shit out of me... that's it... I'm getting them the expensive monitors today... the ones with the electrodes on the chest. I can't take another false alarm" said Tegan. "You're okay babies... you're okay" whispered Lindsey, her hands shaking over her babies. Tegan started wheezing and walked over to the bedside table. She shook her inhaler a few times and took two deep puffs. "Are you okay Tegan?" asked Lindsey. Tegan sat down on the bed with her head in her hands. "I'm fine... I'm fine" she said and tried to steady her breathing with her hands on her thighs.
Sara came out of the bathroom holding something wrapped in a tissue. "Well?" asked Kate jumping up. "Haven't checked... let's go somewhere beautiful... I want to remember this" smiled Sara. Kate took her hand and led her outside to a large tree next to the water with a bench under it. "Sara... whatever that thing says... I love you" said Kate. "I love you too" said Sara. Sara moved a shaky hand to open the tissue. "Just... relax for a minute. Breathe in the fresh air and appreciate how lucky we are to have each other... no matter what" said Kate. Sara smiled and put her head on Kate's shoulder. She felt her nerves calm as she felt Kate's breathing slow down under her cheek. "Okay... let's do it" smiled Kate.
"Tee just lie down for a minute and take some deep breaths" said Lindsey. "I'm fine... just have a bit of an adrenaline rush" said Tegan. "Baby please" said Lindsey, close to tears. Tegan didn't reply but lay down against the pillows. Her hands were still shaking. "That's it Boo... deep breaths" said Lindsey. "Keep checking them" said Tegan. "They're fine Tegan" said Lindsey looking at the babies sleeping peacefully. "That fucking breathing mat" said Tegan becoming emotional with her hand in her hair. "Calm down... breathe" said Lindsey. "I'm going to take a shower and go out to buy those other, fancy monitors" said Tegan. "Don't leave me here alone" said Lindsey. "Babe... I want the best... I want to be able to trust the monitors one hundred percent and right now I don't" said Tegan. Lindsey just bit her lip with her hands in her sides. "I'll call Erin to come over while I'm gone" said Tegan. "Okay... I guess" said Lindsey. "Ask Alex or somebody to go with you please" said Lindsey worried. "Why... I'm fine" said Tegan. "Because you just had trouble breathing" said Lindsey annoyed trying to keep her voice down. "I had to use my inhaler... that's hardy trouble breathing" seethed Tegan. "Tegan shut up and just take somebody with you" said Lindsey and put her hands back on her babies. "Okay... I'm sorry" said Tegan. "I'm sorry too... I just want you safe Tegan" said Lindsey.
Kate and Sara opened the tissue together and looked at the little window showing the results. Sara blinked hard to hold her tears down as the red plus on the test started swimming around. Kate jumped up and threw her fists in the air. "Yes, yes, yes, yeeees" she screamed. The scream echoed over the quiet lake. Sara didn't move and seemed a little in shock as the test fell into her lap. "Sara! Sweetie! We're having a baby" screamed Kate and pulled Sara up. She took her in her arms, picked her up and spun her around. "We're going to be mommies!" said Sara coming out of her shell shocked state as Kate put her down. Kate paced around with her hands in her hair with a shocked but ecstatic look on her face. Sara stood in one spot looking as if she was about to feint. Kate looked at her and her face changed from giddy to concerned. "Baby just sit down for a minute, you look a bit pale" said Kate. Sara swallowed hard and sat down. "How accurate are these things?" asked Sara. "A negative can sometimes turn into a positive but a positive is a definite positive" grinned Kate and kissed Sara repeatedly all over her face. "You okay honey?" she asked looking into Sara's eyes still holding her face. "Yeah... just trying to comprehend this... but I'm so, so happy" said Sara and kissed Kate again. Kate took Sara's wrist in her hand and felt her fast pulse under her fingers. "Let's get you inside, I want to check your BP. You're really looking a bit pale" said Kate. "Doctor... I'm just a bit overwhelmed, I'm fine" said Sara. "Please?" said Kate. Sara sighed. "Okay then" she mumbled. "I'm going to take such good care of you" smiled Kate and led Sara back into the cabin with her hand around her back.
Tegan's phone rang as she was getting dressed. She frowned and looked at the screen. "Sara, I don't have time for this" she mumbled but pressed the green button anyway. "Hi Sara" she said sounding moody. "Tegan" said Sara. "Hey Sar... what's up" said Tegan looking annoyed. "How are you guys doing? How did your first night back home go?" asked Sara. "It was... eventful to say the least but we got through it in one piece" said Tegan. "Good... I miss those two already" said Sara. "Uh huh" mumbled Tegan. "You can always come over and see them... we could use an uninterrupted few hours of sleep" said Tegan. "Sorry, we're at Kate's cabin, it's this awesome place next to the lake. It's amazing, we're having the best time" gushed Sara. "Oh yeah, it's a cool place right" said Tegan. "You've been here?" asked Sara. "Yeah... plenty of times" said Tegan. "Why haven't I been here yet?" said Sara. "Fuck Sar... because you've been holed up in Montreal perhaps... you were hardly ever in LA before you got lovey dovey with the good doctor" said Tegan. "Just kidding" laughed Sara. "You're in a good mood... let's guess... you two have been going at it like rabbits having vacation sex" said Tegan emotionless. "Jeez Tegan... no... I'm not discussing my sex life with you" laughed Sara, mock disgusted. "Uh huh... listen Sar, I have an urgent errand to run, I'll chat to you later" said Tegan.
"Tegan hang on" said Sara quickly. "What is it... want to tell me about the watercolour painting you guys did while sipping merlot watching the sunset?" said Tegan sarcastically. "Tee..." said Sara seriously, followed by a silence. "What Sara? Everything okay?" said Tegan. "You're going to be an aunt... I'm pregnant" said Sara. "What!? Wait... WHAT?" said Tegan loudly. Lindsey entered the bathroom looking perplexed. "We did the home test thingy this morning and it's positive... we're expecting a baby" said Sara shrieking with excitement. "Hang on a second... I didn't even know you're trying... how?" asked Tegan looking shocked. "I'll tell you all about it when we get back tomorrow, or maybe the day after tomorrow. Listen... don't tell anybody yet. It's early, but I wanted you to be the first to know" said Sara. "Linds?" said Tegan. "Okay only Lindsey, I know you tell her everything anyway" laughed Sara. "Wow... congratulations Sara! Send Kate our love and congrats too. I'm so incredibly happy for you guys!" smiled Tegan. "Thanks Tee... that means a lot" said Sara. "Love you Sara" said Tegan. "Love you always Tegan, bye" said Sara. Tegan's hand fell to her side and she looked at Lindsey with a shocked expression on her face. "What was that all about? Sounded almost like..." said Lindsey drying her hands before getting cut off by Tegan. "Casey and Ryan are getting a cousin... Sara's pregnant" said Tegan as her shocked expression turned into a massive smile.
